Women of Western Wake & Lifetime Achievement Award

Today I had the pleasure of attending an event that I go to EVERY SINGLE YEARThe Women of Western Wake, presented by Cary Magazine.

This event is held at the end of October at the gorgeous Umstead Hotel & Spa in Cary.   This year marked the 10th year for the awards luncheon and I was honored to sit at a table with my friends in the Cary Women’s Giving Network.   We decided to all go in together and sponsor a table so we could have the opportunity to tell other ladies about our group!  Over the years, many of the ladies in our Cary Women’s Giving Network have been featured as the award winners for The Women of Western Wake and this year was no different.  But it was a VERY SPECIAL year as our very own, Sheila Ogle, was selected as the FIRST EVER Lifetime Achievement Award Winner in honor of the 10 Year Anniversary!

Cary Women’s Giving Network

Needless to say, Sheila was totally shocked!   This recognition is very much deserved for Sheila and it was a gorgeous huge swirly and heavy award!   We all laughed as the award colors looked perfect with her dress and shoes (see picture below!)

The 2017 Women of Western Wake are as follows: Nicole Dozier, Leigh Duque, Gayle Greene, Fara Palumbo and Miss Vatinet.  Congrats to them all!  Enjoy the photos from today’s luncheon.

Cary Magazine Women of Western Wake 2016

Today was fantastic!  I attended the Women of Western Wake 2016 special recognition luncheon, hosted by Cary Magazine.  They have been giving these awards out since 2005 and I have had the pleasure to attend the luncheon at The Umstead Hotel since 2006!  It’s always fun to see who has been selected and to read about them.  This year I was THRILLED to see my dear friends Alisa Wright Colopy and Nur Onvural, selected at 2 of the 5 recipients.  Congrats ladies!!!  You can read more about them HERE.

Honored and Respected by these Amazing Women!

Liz of VantageSouth Bank with Becca

Liz of VantageSouth Bank with Becca

Last Friday I had the pleasure of attending The Women of Western Wake Luncheon, hosted by The Umstead Hotel & Spa in Cary, NC.  I was invited to attend by my good friend, Liz Cantino of VantageSouth Bank, who happened to be the Presenting Sponsor for this fantastic event!  I’ve attended this celebration luncheon in the past and it certainly ranks up there pretty high as being a FAVORITE event!  Thanks so much Liz for having me as a guest at your table!  Cary Magazine has been doing this luncheon since 2005 and it honors female movers and shakers in the Cary and Western Wake community.  The event includes networking and lunch, followed by opening remarks and the introduction of the selected female leaders.  Tisha Powell, anchor for ABC Channel 11 News, hosts the candid panel discussion with the honored selected women.

The 2013 Cary Magazine Women of Westeran Wake included the following ladies: Joy Ennis, Lynn Minges, DJ Mitsch, Michelle Pfeiffer and Susan Zarate.  I have some sort of connection-link to each of these women!  Joy is married to Shelton Ennis, who is in my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club; Lynn Minges is the CEO of the NC Restaurant & Lodging Association and I knew her name as a college student at East Carolina University while studying in the Hospitality Management Program; DJ Mitsch is married to Barry Mitsch with whom I have the pleasure of serving with on the Cary Chamber Board of Directors (I also know DJ from the Honor A Teacher Program they do once a year); Michelle Pfeiffer, Founder of Anna’s Angels spoke to our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club a few months ago as a guest of Mary Madenspacher (from Life Experiences) and Susan Zarate works at Cary High School in the ESL program, same school where my mother-in-law, Sharon Smith, used to teach Freshman English for 10+ years.

Congrats to Joy Ennis!

Congrats to Joy Ennis!

So I’ve had the honored pleasure of crossing paths with these amazing women!  I enjoyed the panel discussion where the ladies were seated on stage and asked different things about their lives, from their personal success stories to their industry specific challenges. I loved what Joy Ennis has to say when asked the questions “As a working woman…do you think it is possible to have IT ALL”.  Joy answered the question by saying “You have to first define what having IT ALL means to you personally, as IT ALL is not going to be the same to everyone”.

Great insight Joy!  Congrats to all of these fantastic honorees!  Thanks again to Liz Cantino from VantageSouth Bank for allowing me to be her guest and also a thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for the lovely black dress and strappy platform shoes for the event!  I love stepping out in STYLE with My Girlfriend’s Closet!

Women of Western Wake & We Build People

I recently attended the Cary Magazine’s 4th annual Women of Western Wake Luncheon that was held at the lovely Umstead Hotel on the SAS Campus in Cary, NC.

Women of Western Wake Winners Panel

This was my second year attending and it has quickly become an event that I look forward to each year.  I attended the luncheon as a guest of my good friend and fellow YMCA We Build People Campaign colleague, Linda Shirley of BB&T.  The luncheon was very nice and honored five women who live & work in Western Wake and who have made major impacts in our community through their careers, companies, volunteer hours and personal lives.   The honorees this year included: Dr. Kerry Chandler, Director of Breast Imaging Services at Wake Radiology, Phyllis Eller-Moffett, founder of Quality Staffing Specialist, Debra Goldman, District 9 Representative for Wake County Public School System, Monica Smiley, Editor & Publisher of Enterprising Women magazine, and Bianca Strzalkowski, 2011 Military Spouse of the YearAngela Hampton of ABC 11 led an open & candid discussion panel with the honorees.  I enjoyed hearing each of the ladies talk about their passions in life and sharing their secrets of how they manage the life-work-balance in each of their busy lives.  My favorite honoree was Bianca Stzalkowski as I was able to really connect with her comments and I felt like she was a very genuine and relatable woman.  I enjoyed seeing another good friend at the luncheon, Christina Hayward, a local Arbonne representative

Christina & Becca

Christina is really growing her business/brand by attending lots of networking functions and making new friends/connections.  I’m starting to see Christina everywhere!  I was also happy to see past Women of Western Wake Honoree (2007), Diane Hillsgrove, Branch Executive Director of the Cary YMCA and fellow Cary Chamber Board of Directors Chair, Diane Rupprecht, attorney at Ellis & Winters LLP at the luncheon.  Cheers to Cary Magazine for another successful event honoring the outstanding women of Western Wake.

Now back to the We Build People Campaign (WBPC).   This is my 2nd year participating in the campaign and I’m really trying hard this year to bring in some good donations.  The WBPC is through the YMCA and ALL of the money raised benefits underprivileged children and families right here in our very own area.

Becca, Diane Rupprecht & Diane Hillsgrove

Over the past year I’ve been able to witness these families on a very personal level as I helped to deliver meals to them during Thanksgiving and I went to tour the summer camp, Camp High Hopes, during the summer while camp was in session.  I spent my childhood summers at camp myself, so I know first-hand the importance of summer camp friends, lessons, guidance and memories that last a lifetime!  So I’m working with Diane Hillsgrove to help raise funds through the WBPC to send these wonderful but needy kids in our community to camp and to help provide them with services throughout the year.  Financial gifts of all sizes are welcomed!  Blake and I have already contributed to sending a child to camp for one fun-filled week that includes learning life skills and character development.  The gift is only $169.  I’d love to have more gifts just like that!  Are you willing to donate/help?  Please contact me and let me know!  It’s easy and it is making a difference in our community.

There are many great things going on in Western Wake!  I hope you are taking advantage of some of these great opportunities.  I look forward to hearing from you about donating to the We Build People Campaign and I know I’ll be seeing many of you at upcoming Chamber & networking events.   Keep in mind that our CPA firm is growing and currently taking on new clients.  We’ve changed our firm name to Smith & Smith, CPA, P.C. as Blake recently received his CPA license!  We are expanding into the office next door and we are hiring more staff.  We also have a BRAND NEW website coming soon, so stay tuned!  Even with lots of great growth and changes taking place, we are never too busy to help a small business owner with their accounting/tax needs.  We welcome referrals!
