The Gifting Tree for Town of Cary

The Gifting Tree 2016

The Gifting Tree 2016

Happy December!  It is time for the Annual Town of Cary Gifting Tree Project!  Once again, Smith & Smith, CPA is participating in this event and we went downtown Cary last week to decorate our Christmas tree.  I LOVE our location this year, we are right at the corner of Academy and Chatham Street in the heart of downtown Cary!  We are at the traffic light right across from Ashworth Drugs.  Our tree is a little different this year and is decorated with patriotic spirit as a reversed American Flag.  Many thanks to my good friend, Lindsey Dishman, for helping me come up with the idea!  I spray painted the top of the tree white and the bottom of the tree blue (we won’t talk about what my hands looked like once that was done!!).  Then I used red ribbon and bows for the top of the tree (for the stripes on the flag) and huge white snowflake ornaments (bought in Savannah, GA) for the white stars on the flag on the bottom of the tree.  I also have new solar lights on the tree to light it up at dark.  Please take a few minutes to use this LINK to vote for our tree. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/cqhnpy9  It is one vote per email, so you only have to vote once!  The winning tree with the MOST votes will get $500 for the charity of their choice!  We will be supporting Life Experiences again this year as our charity of choice!  So please VOTE!

Life Experiences Annual Christmas Party

Speaking of Life Experiences, last night was their Annual Christmas Party.  It is always so much fun and an event that my family looks forward to each year.  It is a covered dish dinner party and all of the sweet employees trade names with each other and swap gifts.   One of them gets to dress up as Santa Claus too and passes out all of the gifts.  This year Santa was played by Matt.  He was so happy and you can see the big smile on his face!  Trent and Mark helped to pass out the gifts too.  It is so important to me so see our children involved with helping and loving others.  During the party, Mary Madenspacher, Executive Director, passed the microphone around the room and everyone got a chance to introduce themselves and their families.  It is so sweet to hear them tell how much Life Experiences means to them and sometimes they say really funny things too!   I am so honored to serve at the Board President for Life Experiences this year.  Here is a great photo of our Board Members at the party last night.  Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex for helping me shop for this beautiful sparkly silver sweater!  They have tons of great holiday wear so check them out for your upcoming Christmas & Holiday parties!!!!!!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get a discount with your purchase!

The Gifting Tree Project in Cary!

The Gifting Tree Project

The Gifting Tree Project

Oh such exciting times!  Smith & Smith, CPA is excited to be a participant in the The Gifting Tree Project this year, hosted by The Town of Cary.  This project has been going on for just a few years and it’s a way to ‘dress up’ downtown Cary with Christmas trees for the holiday season.   The Gifting Tree Project invites families, organizations, companies, schools and nonprofits to decorate a Christmas tree in downtown Cary for the month of December.  This year, there is  “TWIST”!!!!!  The winning tree with the most votes (yes, it is online voting) will have a $500 donation made to the nonprofit of their choice.  Thanks to Belle at the Jones House for being the sponsor of the charitable gift for The Gifting Tree Project.   Yesterday afternoon was the ‘decoration time’ so twenty-seven different groups all got creative and artistic and decorated their 6-7′ trees in their own unique ways.  All of the trees require ‘solar’ lights, so some groups had solar spotlights and some trees had solar tree lights (ours has the solar tree lights).

I also spent time over the past few weeks make cutemoney’ themed decorations….I had to get creative with my ornaments as there aren’t a lot of ‘money’ ones out there to choose from.  Thankfully the Dollar Tree has ‘large fake money bills’ so I used those inside of clear glass balls.  I also decorated some ceramic ornaments with our name.  Many thanks to Mary Madenspacher of Life Experiences and Alicia Angel for coming to help me decorate our tree.  It was fun to walk around and see the other trees and get some good ideas for next year.  I’d also like to give a SHOUT-OUT to the Rotary Clubs of Cary…all 5 clubs came together and created a “ROTARY TREE”.   It looks great and I even made a few ornaments for it myself.  Cary Visual Art also has a very fun tree downtown and so does my friend Holly Beerman of Beerman Construction!

The Gifting Tree Project will be on display until Tuesday, December 30th.  Voting for the trees takes place online and the winner will receive The People’s Choice Winner Award & $500 to their Charity of Choice.  Voting starts THIS WEEK, Saturday, December 6th and goes through Saturday, December 20th.  You can vote only one time.  You can look at the website now but they won’t have all of the trees listed and photographed and ready for voting until Saturday.  There will also be a panel of judges who will score each tree based on Representation of Organization/Company, Representation of Holiday Spirit, Originality & Creativity, and Overall Presentation.

Some people might be wondering why our CPA firm would participate in this project…and as the Director of Marketing, I see many benefits in participation!  First of all, The Gifting Tree Project a “community project” and I’ve always been a big believer in not only doing ‘business’ in your community, but being INVOLVED with all parts of the community, especially artistic and creative ones like this.  Plus ever single tree has a sign beside of it…so think of all the people who will pass by and see our tree and our company name during the month of December!  That’s some good publicity!!!!  We appreciate you votes for Smith & Smith, CPA in The Gifting Tree ProjectThanks Town of Cary!

Family Night with Tax Frogs at Chick-fil-a Waverly Place

Last Tuesday, Smith & Smith, CPA was proud to host FAMILY NIGHT at Chick-fil-a Waverly Place.

Smith & Smith, CPA

Smith & Smith, CPA

We’ve been sponsoring the Family Night event for several years now and typically act as the host at least twice a year.  We were originally set to host the last week of January, but snowy weather had us running for home and we had to reschedule.  So on February 4th, (Bob’s birthday) we set-up our table and worked with kids who were there to have dinner and participate in Family Night.  I had put together a really cute green frog craft that I found at Michael’s Arts and Crafts.  The green frog was made out of a paper cup, along with a few other pieces. To make it ‘tax/CPA related’ I printed off circle stickers with our business name and a sticker for the front that said, “Jump into Tax Season”.  It turned out to be a really cute little craft, very easy to make and fun to assemble with the kids.

Our whole office came to Chick-fil-a that night to support and I was happy to have Alicia and her youngest daughter, Ava, there with me helping kids at the table.  All of the kids had fun playing together and we are very grateful to Chick-fil-a Waverly Place for inviting us to be part of their Family Night Series.  We gave away a Smith & Smith, CPA green tailgate chair (winner is Jackson Garrison) and also a Smith & Smith, CPA green cooler (winner is Cindy).  I will be contacting the winners this afternoon so they can come by and get their prizes!

Fire kids & hero

Fire kids & hero

The Cary Fire Department ended up coming by the restaurant due to an accident (everyone was safe) and one of the firemen came into Chick-fil-a and gave red plastic fire hats to all of the kids inside!  He was so nice and it was great to see how much of hero Firemen (and fire women) are to kids.  I want to personally give kudos to the Town of Cary Fire Department for being so kind and for always being interactive with kids in the community.  Thanks to everyone who came out to support Smith & Smith, CPA at Chick-fil-a Waverly Place for Family Night!  We’ll be there again later this year.

Tax season is in full swing!  We are accepting new clients and the phones & emails are very busy with inquires for service and appointments are coming in strong.  Thank you so much!  We love working with all of our clients and we appreciate your business!  Thank you for referring to Smith & Smith, CPA!

Travinia, Celebrations, Hockey, Cary Chamber and MORE!

Travinia with Wendy & ice sculpture

Travinia with Wendy

Last week was the One-Year Anniversary Party for Travinia Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar in Cary, NC.  Blake and I were invited to the party through Cary Chamber membership by Christine Stine, Assistant GM & Catering Sales for Travinia.  The party was held on the outside patio (it was a PERFECT night) and included wine & appetizers.  Information was available for learning about having a perfect party with catered and private dining from Travinia.  They offered handpicked wines for tasting and we enjoyed them while sitting around the fire pits networking with others.  A beautiful ice sculpture was on display!

I had a lovely time meeting Wendy Ruocco, Director of Catering Operations. Wendy was in town from Lexington, SC to help with the anniversary celebration party.  Ira Freedman, General Manager, was also at the party and greeted guests as they arrived.  Travinia has added so much to the Cary/Morrisville area and is a huge part of the Park West Village Shopping CenterTravinia makes it easy to host a party and offers off premise catering, carryout & delivery, family style dining, limited menus and private dining.  They currently have locations in South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, and Virginia.

Girl Night dinner at Travinia

Girl Night dinner at Travinia

WBON of Cary has hosted several of our monthly board meetings in their private dining room and my group of girlfriends had our ‘girl night’ dinner party there this past weekend.   We took in a ‘celebration‘ strawberry cheesecake with nine lit candles and took turns blowing out the candles as we passed it around and told what we were celebrating (everything from a birthday last week to earning a CPA license.)   The food is always amazing and the atmosphere makes you feel like you are in another place! I’m all about their patio & fire pits!!!! Thanks Ira, Wendy and Christine for having Travinia so involved with Cary, especially with the Cary Chamber too!

Summit for Cary

Summit for Cary

Speaking of the Cary Chamber, last week was the Eye Opener Breakfast with guest speaker, Jeff Ulma, Planning Director for the Town of Cary.  Jeff discussed the Imagine Cary plan that is in the beginning phases.  The Town of Cary is holding a “SUMMIT ON THE FUTURE” this week on Thursday, May 2nd.  The event is free, but RSVP is required.  This summit is an opportunity for the public to get involved with creating Cary’s new community plan and shaping the future of Cary.  They currently have around 900 people signed up to attend!  It’s gonna be HUGE and great for Cary.  I know several people that will be attending.

BONANZA Membership Drive

BONANZA Membership Drive

Following Jeff’s presentation, the Cary Chamber Membership Drive…BONANZA had a reporting session meeting.  The Membership Drive 2013 is going well and we are brining in new members!  Everyone on the BONANZA drive is working hard to help recruit membership and sponsorships.  It’s a great time to be involved in Cary…make sure you are a Cary Chamber member!  Here is a picture of some of the BONANZA membership drive leaders.  We all had a great time a few weeks ago gathering at Travinia for a reporting session, too.

Hockey Game Fun

And last but not least, Alicia went with her mom to the last Carolina Hurricanes Hockey game.  I won a pair of tickets at the Cary Chamber Business of Women and wasn’t able to attend the game that night, so I gave them to Alicia and she took her mom for the first time ever!  The seats were excellent (of course!  Thank you Cary Chamber!) and they had a fun time eating, drinking and watching the game!  Go Canes!  Better luck next season….  I must say THANK YOU to Lois and Bethany at My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary & Apex for the lovely navy blue & white striped dress from Ann Taylor that I wore to the Cary Chamber events and for the dark blue beaded emblessished top from Boston Proper.  They have a HUGE selection of summer dresses, tops & pants!  Go check them out and tell them Becca sent you shopping!  And stop by Travinia for a drink & bite to eat too!

Town of Cary Firefighters are Awesome!

Trent with Station 6 Firefighters

The Town of Cary is such a great place to live and work!  Here is a cute story of why I am so biased towards this town…  Over the long holiday weekend, I traveled to East Tennessee with my mom and boys to visit my grandmothers.  We got back to Cary around 3pm on Monday (MLK Holiday) and went over to the elementary school across from our house to play and ride bikes.  It was getting close to 5pm, so we started to head back home and saw one of the Cary fire trucks turning into the bus lot of the school, so we stopped and waved at all of the firemen (our boys are obsessed with fire trucks, but what little boy isn’t??).

Checking out the truck

The fire truck went down and looped around and then drove back by, so we stopped to wave again.  Except this time the truck stopped and the firemen rolled down the window to see if the boys wanted a fire hat!  Of course they did and so we went over to the truck to get a hat.  Then they got out of the truck and gave Mark & Trent a full tour of the truck, showed them all of the gadgets on the inside and even let them do a demo with the fire hose!  I talked with some of the firemen and they were showing one of the news guys around on their route (they were from the Ten-Ten Station 6).  It was such a cool experience for my boys; they had their own personal fire truck tour!  We’ve been able to see the fire trucks before at other events but this experience really tops them all!  The level of kindness and appreciation for children that the firefighters from Station 6 showed our family that day just really made me love Cary even more!  We really do have the best and most wonderful people living, working and SERVING in our community!  Thank you Station 6 Firefighters!
