When are my Taxes Due for 2012?

When are my taxes due?

So here we are at the END of March 2012…April is knocking.  Around our office that means ONE THING…the FINAL COUNT DOWN to tax filing day is quickly approaching!  That leads to another point…many people are asking…when are my taxes due???  As of today (March 30th), you have 18 more days to either file your return or file for an extension.  18 more days you ask…don’t you mean 16 more days?  Nope, I am serious, taxes are due APRIL 17th this year, instead of the usually April 15th.  Wondering why your taxes are due on this unusual day?  It’s due to a combination of the calendar, a holiday and tax law.

Taxes Due April 17 2012

For the 3rd time in 7 years the answer to “when are my taxes due” will NOT be on April 15th (which has become part of US culture that many of us simply call it “tax day”).  I even have a cousin born on April 15th and we’ve called her a ‘tax day baby’ for years!  I found a really great blog article from a real estate company in Maine and I’ve pulled most of my information from their article.  You can see their full article by clicking HERE.  So your taxes due on April 17th basically breaks down like this:  April 15th is a SUNDAY on the calendar this year and thus all federal offices are closed on Sundays.  So the tax due date rolls over to the next available business day, which is Monday, April 16th, however, April 16th happens to be a holiday in the District of Columbia called Emancipation Day (founded in the year 2005).  You can click on Emancipation Day to find out more about this holiday but it basically honors President Abraham Lincoln for the signing of the Compensation Emancipation Act.   So all of the offices in Washington, D.C. will be closed, including the IRS.  Therefore, we roll to the NEXT DAY…April 17th!  Not a weekend and not a holiday.  Whew!   That is the answer to the infamous question of the hour…when are my taxes due

Taxes Due

So now that you have only 18 more days before your taxes are due…you have two options!  Either get your 2011 taxes filed, or an extension put in!  Smith & Smith, CPA will continue to accept new personal tax clients over the next few days and we’ll complete as many as possible and will assist with filing extensions for those who need more time.  Just remember an extension is a grace period for more time to file, but NOT to pay (if you owe).  Please feel free to contact us for more information.  If you are happy with our service, please help us out with some reviews online!  Please click HERE to write a review (click the RED box that saysWrite a Review“)  Thanks so much!   Visit our website: http://www.smithandsmithcpa.com/ for more information.
