Leadership Cary in Education with the Cary Chamber of Commerce

Friends at Leadership Cary with Lisa Wilson

Earlier this week I attended the Cary Chamber Leadership Cary Class of 2015-2016 seminar on Education.  I am happy to serve at the Co-Chair for this year’s class.  We started the day off at the Cary Chamber of Commerce in downtown Cary where we heard from Wake County Public Schools Superintended, Dr. Jim Merrill.  Dr. Merrill gave an overview of the current WCPSS stats, number of schools, students, amount spent per student, teacher salaries and graduation rates.

WCPSS Board Member, Bill Fletcher

He also discussed the goal for 2020 to have a 95% Gradation Rate…which also includes students having the skills to be able to walk at graduation but also move on to the next level…being prepared for the real world!  After Dr. Merrill we heard from Bill Fletcher, Board Member for Wake County Public School System.  Bill spoke on building new schools, student population growth, student achievement and the upcoming election in November.  Bill has been a friend for many years, he is active in Rotary and really tires to connect the community with the school board.

I enjoyed hearing both of them speak.   After Bill, we heard from Lisa Wilson, Director for Corporate Relations Wake Technical Community College.  Lisa is a fellow East Carolina University alumni (GO PIRATES) and she spoke on the new things at Wake Tech, their growth and NINE campus locations all in Wake County.   After the morning session, I came back to work (it’s Tax Season after all!) and the group went over to tour Hunt Library at NC State and learned more about Vernon Malone College and Career Academy.   Thanks to Christie Moser for her guidance and support to the Cary Leadership class!  Christie works at the Cary Chamber and makes all of the Leadership Cary plans and arrangements.

Sweet Things at Smith & Smith, CPA

Becca & Alexa

Becca & Alexa

I had a sweet visitor at work yesterday too!  My good friend, Tia Coppus, brought their dog, Alexa, by to see me.  We have helped to doggie-sit Alexa over the past few months and I always get exited to see her!  We have not gotten another dog yet, our 10 1/2 year old dog, Griffin, passed away in December.  The boys are hoping to get another dog soon, we keep telling them we have to get through tax season first!  Thanks to My Girlfriends Closet for the super cute pink and black polka-dot dress!  I paired it with a black cardigan and stayed comfy all day!  And I think Alexa liked stopping by to see me too 🙂  Thanks Tia!!!  She made my day!

Donuts!

Donuts!

Another sweet treat!?!  We had a guy stop by the office who was selling Krispy Kreme donuts for a fundraiser and yes, we didn’t say NO!  The guys bought several boxes an had them for breakfast, lunch and a later afternoon snack!   For some reason…those donuts in the Fundraiser boxes always seem to have LOTS of extra frosting on them!  We are in count-down-mode at work…Friday March 18th is ONE MONTH until TAX DAY…April 18th 2016!  Don’t Blake, Bob and Cam look cute!?!?!

So the weather has been unusually warm around here these past few weeks!  I mean today alone it was a warm & toasty 85 degrees!  Global Warming for SURE!  These sunny and warm days really do make it hard to be in the office All DAY!  But it makes me want to break out the spring & summer clothes and get ready for warm weather fashions!  Check out this really cool multi-layered gold necklace from My Girlfriend’s Closet!  They have TONS of new great summer jewelry in both of their stores…downtown Cary and downtown Apex!  A great piece of statement jewelry is an easy way to dress up your wardrobe!  Shop at MGC, tell them Becca sent you and get 10% off your purchase!

Why I LOVE our Clients at Smith & Smith, CPA

Oranges for CPA office

Oranges for CPA office

Everyone always ask “Oh don’t you just hate tax season since you are so busy!?!”  and the truth is NO, we don’t hate it at all.  Now don’t get me wrong, we ARE BUSY and it is kinda crazy in here, but the pure fact that we have REALLY awesome clients makes it so much easier to get through this time of year!  Just check out this fresh bag of oranges that one of our clients brought in the other day!  Nothing is as good as a fresh orange!  We have also had several of our referral clients bring in breakfast and coffee, what a great way to start the day!   Not to mention, Blake has received some really nice emails from clients, thanking him for our hard work, professional manner and friendly service.   Check out this one email he got this week!

“Hi Blake, once again, thank you very much for doing my taxes this year.  Your firm is just amazing and you do a fantastic professional job.  I enjoy working with you.”

And a special thanks to Serendipity Cafe, one of our restaurant clients located in downtown Cary, for bringing us lunch today! YUMMY-YUM!!!!  By far one of my MOST FAVORITE places in downtown Cary to eat!   We all got to order one of our fresh made sandwiches.  What a great lunch for a Friday afternoon to kick off the weekend!  We ordered: The Hot Turkey Melt, Crown Club, Reuben and Tried & True!  Who is ready for lunch today!?!  WE ARE!!

So how about ONE MORE food post to cap off this blog for the day!!?!  My little guy, Mark, had to create a business for his kindergarten class last week and bring items to sell.  It was their “Economy Day”.   So he decided to sell brownies and lemonade.  We borrowed a lemonade stand from our neighbor from him to use at school, and well, long story short, the brownies I ‘attempted’ to make at home went right in the trash!  (don’t ask!!!)  So who else do you call when you need the BEST Brownies in town!?!  Life Experiences!!!!!  They have the BEST bakery in town, staffed by adults with disabilities and their brownies are made with LOVE and so good! So those are the brownies that Mark proudly sold at his lemonade and brownie stand last week.  🙂   Get an order today!

A Time to Celebrate a Job Well Done!

Smith & Smith, CPA at Angus Barn

Smith & Smith, CPA at Angus Barn

Well…that special day of April 15th has now come and gone!  2013 Tax Returns and Extensions have been filed and the hours are completed…but is all the work done and the party over!?! NO WAY! We have still have lots to get completed, but that will all get done soon enough.  Thanks so much to all of our clients for their support and help during the final few days before April 15th.  We were certainly not forgotten as we had lots of sweet treats, gift cards, coffee and Energy Drinks brought in to get us through!  Thanks to everyone!

Dessert anyone?

Dessert anyone?

A few years ago we started celebrating the end of Tax Season with a big office & family Tax Celebration Dinner.  It’s a dinner that we all look forward to and have marked on our calendars as soon as tax season starts!  This year we carried on the tradition by going to The Angus Barn in Raleigh.  We love going there, the whole atmosphere is just wonderful and the food, service and experience is certainly worthy of a celebration!  We’ve been celebrating at the Angus Barn for the past few years and the experience just keeps getting better and better.  Our server last night, Chris, happened to be a long time friend of ours and had worked at Red Lobster in Greenville years ago when Blake and I were working there too.  We always arrive early to enjoy the fresh appetizers and to visit the Wild Turkey Lounge.  Van Eure came by the table to say hello, Van is the current owner of the Angus Barn (her father started it years ago) and was a friend/mentor to me during my years at ECU.

It’s always great to see her and she really knows how to make guests feel welcomed!  After dinner and dessert we stopped by the Angus Barn store to purchase a few favorite gifts and also picked up a gift card for our office postman who will be retiring in a few weeks (Angus Barn is his favorite place too!).   It was a very nice evening and we enjoyed our Tax Celebration dinner and it was nice to have Brooke Smith (Cam’s wife) and John Spey (Alicia’s husband) with us to celebrate too.

Special Events & Prom Gowns at MGC in downtown Apex

Thanks to Lois Cozart, Owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex and downtown Cary for picking the lovely orange and blue strapless dress for me to wear to the Angus Barn.  I’m so honored to wear clothing from My Girlfriend’s Closet and love all that they have to offer both to consigners and shoppers!  Lois and her staff have set-up a very special room in their downtown Apex store that is strictly for prom & formal wear events.  Perfect timing for all of the local high school proms!  They have a large selection of gowns in all sizes and styles…and their prices are great too!  Why pay top dollar for a gown that you will probably only wear onetime anyway when you can get a beautiful gown for a better price at My Girlfriend’s Closet!!?!?!  Tell them you read about My Girlfriend’s Closet in Beccasblog.com and get 10% off your total purchase!

Time to Celebrate…Angus Barn Style!

Celebrating at the Angus Barn

Celebrating at the Angus Barn

Every year at the end of Tax Season, our office, Smith & Smith, CPA, takes a night together to celebrate.  We’ve worked long hours and long days since the end of late January, so a night out to celebrate is one that we all really looking forward to.  It’s a chance to take some time away from the office together and have a very relaxing and enjoyable evening.  For the past few years we have been celebrating together at the Angus Barn in Raleigh, NC.  This year, six of us celebrated at Angus Barn (pictured at left).  Cam and his family celebrated at Longhorn Steakhouse in Apex, NC.

Becca and Van

Becca and Van

I love going to Angus Barn.  The owner, Van Eure, has been a dear friend and role model for me since my early college years at East Carolina University.  Van stopped by our table during the evening and it was wonderful as always to see her!  She’s such a kind and giving person and really goes out of her way to make sure that every single guest has a wonderful experience and visit at the Angus Barn.  This was the first year for Alicia Angell and her husband, John, to join us for our tax celebration.  Alicia joined Smith & Smith, CPA back in late 2012 and jumped right into a very busy tax season.  We had a great time at dinner talking  and getting to know John better.  We enjoyed pre-dinner drinks from the Wild Turkey Lounge upstairs at the Angus Barn, and of course indulged on the famous cheese & crackers appetizers.

Lobster and Filet

Lobster and Filet

For dinner we were treated to delicious rib appetizers and all of our meals were prepared perfectly.  I had the filet and shrimp, while Alicia and Sharon had the prime rib with shrimp.  Bob, Blake and John all had steak plus Bob and Blake enjoyed HUGE lobster tails!  We’ve always said for years that going to the Angus Barn isn’t just about the food, though the food is amazing, but it’s also about the experience. The Angus Barn alone is just very majestic and grand in its own way.  We love the feeling of the ‘rustic elegance’ and the captivating interior design.  We love looking at all of the antique artifacts and military awards, such as the Purple Heart award that hangs in the front foyer lobby area.  I also love the gift shop that holds some of the coolest and most unique gifts!  I always get my mom a pound cake candle, as it makes a very nice early Mother’s Day gift!

Alicia and her creme brulee

Oh, and I MUST mention the desserts!  No matter how much I eat or drink, I always, always, always have to save room for dessert at the Angus Barn!!  I’ve been a ‘blackberry cobbler’ kind-of-girl my whole life…blackberry cobbler takes me back to my childhood days growing up in Eastern Tennessee and eating the best blackberry cobbler on earth!  I love the cobbler at the Angus Barn and couldn’t wait for dessert time!  Alicia and Sharon also ordered dessert, they enjoyed the crème brulee and it looked so delicious too.  Alicia tried to get me to have a bite of hers, but I just couldn’t cheat on my blackberry pie (it also comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top).

We also had several cups of hot coffee that were served in the famous Angus Barn red coffee mug.  Our server, Patrick and his assistant-server, Alta, were both amazing and very attentive to our dining needs.  Blake and I also had a chance to enjoy drinks from the service bar right near our seats, and the bartender was kind enough to service me a Flirt-Tini (ohhhh it was soooo good and really fun to watch her make it) and Blake a pilsner beer.  Thank you Van for treating us so well!  And thank you to My Girlfriend’s Closet for this beautiful animal print & gold buckle dress!  I had plenty of room in it all night for eating!!!  The coral bubble necklace was a great styling touch too, thank you Bethany for that idea!

So there is our celebration dinner.  We had a very successful tax season and are always grateful to our many tax clients and referral partners.   It is a pleasure doing business with people that you admire and trust.  We truly value every single client and do our absolute best to make sure that every client is taken care of in a timely manner.  Thank you for helping make Smith & Smith, CPA a successful small business in Cary, NC!  Happy Weekend!!!!

I love a good knock-knock joke.  Here is one for you Knock Knock…Who’s there?  Tax Season!  Tax Season who?  Tax Season is HERE…NOW!

Tax King Cartoon

That may not be funny to many people, but it’s true!  We’ve been getting phone calls left and right about making client appointments and getting taxes filed.  Seems like it starts earlier and earlier each year…but as we say around Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary…tis the season!  January is nearly over and the next three months will go quickly, before we blink it will be April 17th (you get two extra days this year) and taxes will be due!  That or you will have to file an extension (remember that an extension is just an extension to file…not an extension to pay).   The IRS website is a good resource too, especially for generic questions, like about E-File and other useful tools.  Make sure you use the website www.irs.gov I looked at www.irs.com and while it is not the ‘official’ IRS website, it does have some useful information.  Our CPA office is also available to help with any questions and we are taking on new clients.  Please let us know if you are ready to get started with your 2011 taxes!
