Suffer No More!!!!  Acne Treatment for Adult Women

I had the pleasure earlier this week in stopping by to see one of our clients, Carmen Popa, the proud owner of Luminosity Acne SkincareSmith & Smith, CPA knows the Popa family really well, as nearly everyone in their family is small business owner!  Silvia (mom) is the owner of Silvia Hair Designs, Stelian (dad) is the owner of Raleigh Wrought Iron & Designs (he was recently featured in Cary Living Magazine in the ‘Modern Man’ article) and Dragos (brother) helps with the business websites and works in the HVAC industry.

Luminosity, acne treatment for adult women

Carmen has done a fabulous job in growing her small business and I was excited to get to visit with her at her studio office.  My first thought of acne is initially teens and young adults and I was thinking that this was going to be Carmen’s main target market.  However, I was surprised to find out that she actually has a small nice market in providing acne treatment for adult women.  She has several before and after photos on her website of how her acne treatment for adult women really does work and provides amazing results!  She even has some clients who drive over 3-hours (one way) for her services.  As a licensed esthetician, Carmen is very educated in her field, but best of all, she is a caring person.

Carmen knows that often times her clients are in last-ditch-efforts…they’ve tried it all and are close to giving up.  They come to her and quickly find that the years they have spent at a dermatologist office and the money on products for treatment are no longer necessary.  Carmen’s acne treatment for women (and men, kids, teens, etc.) can be completed over a period of 3-month period and the results are amazing.  Carmen says the best part about her job is that she turns her client’s hopelessness into relief and overwhelming joy.  If you know someone that suffers from acne or is looking for acne treatment for adult women, please point them in Carmen’s direction.  Everyone has a right to clear skin!

Triangle Pilates

I had to share this picture with you too.  After the WBON-Cary meeting this week, I stopped by to see another good fried, Patty Geiger, owner of Triangle Pilates.  I had a HUGE bouquet of balloons left over that we had used for the meeting and I wanted to give them to a local female business owner who could use them on their outdoor-triangle-top-sign.  Triangle Pilates was PERFECT for this!  Hope they brought some joy before the rain got to them!

ECU Women’s Roundtable

ECU Women's Roundtable

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending the 2ndAnnual East Carolina University Women’s Roundtable Conference in Greenville, NC.  I went with my best friend and mom, Marsha Fleenor.  We planned to attend this conference months ago and were really excited about the whole weekend, not only being able to spend it together, but also being able to meet some other fantastic women who care about ECU as much as we do!  The WRC (ECU Women’s Roundtable Conference) was better than we ever thought it would be and there is so much to tell, just not sure I can do it only one blog post, but I’ll try!

Marsha with Dr. David White

The WRC was founded in 2003 and stands on the motto of“Encouraging Leadership and Philanthropy” and acknowledges the contribution of women to ECU’s legacy and encourages new levels of commitment by women to the university’s future.  I’d love to tell you more about it, but I’ll let you read more on the home link HERE.  A majority of the weekend was planned and organized by Marcy Romary, Senior Gifts Officer and Director of Women’s Philanthropy for ECU.  We kicked off the conference on Friday afternoon April 20th and adjourned late in the afternoon on Saturday, April 21st.  It was a fun-filled and tightly packed activity weekend, but each part was wonderful and well planned.

STEMM

The first activity on Friday involved hearing about STEMM careers by Dr. Evelyn Brown of the College of Technology and Computer ScienceDr. David White, Dean of the College of Technology and Computer Science made the opening introductions.   I’ve heard several presentations on STEMM before, but this one really dug in deep and talked about ECU’s role in STEMM programs.  STEMM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine and is focused on Elementary to Middle School aged girls.  After the STEMM program we heard from a student panel from the Honors College

Honors College Panel

Wow…the three students we heard from were SOOOO impressive!  We were jealous of the Honors trips that they get to participate in, WOW they sounds like fun and great learning experiences!!!  Their advisors, Dr. Connor and Dr. Baxter (Associate Dean of the Honors College) also participated in the presentation.  The Honors College Students that we heard from were: Hetal Patel from Cary, NC; Kevin Kearney from Wilmington, NC and Karina Dierfol from Bervard, NC.    After the Honors College panel, we did a walking tour of campus led by none other than the ECU Ambassadors

Campus tour with ECU Ambassadors

I was a proud ECU Ambassador for all four years of my undergraduate degree at ECU and totally loved the experience!   Our tour guides did a fabulous job of showing us all around campus and pointed out some new things.  Some of the ladies in our group hadn’t been back to campus in years and they were excited to see all of the new buildings, changes and upgrades.  It was fun to hear the stories of “When I was at ECU we (fill-in-the-blank)”.   At the end of the walking tour, we had a nice snack and shopping adventure at the ECU Student Store on campus.

Dinner at the Croatan

I got a nice new PINK ECU hat (thanks MOM!!) and  cool new t-shirts for my little boys.  We then heard presentations from the College of Education about how they work to 1) Prepare Educators, 2) Attract Educators, 3) Assess Educators, and 4) Teach Educators.  This was a fascinating part to me because I was never in the teaching department and they showed how technology now lets them work remotely with teachers all over the world because of online learning and web-based courses.  We then had a nice break before dinner.   For dinner, this was a treat!  We met with the other ladies at the Croatan on campus.

Titanic Dinner Menu

The Croatan was one of my favorite hangouts during my years at ECU and it has been totally torn-down and rebuilt!  I was shocked at the change!  It now has a Chili’s restaurant upstairs (ECU students have it made….let me tell you).   Our dinner at the Coratan was a tribute to the Titanic anniversary.  The chef prepared a menu that was entitled “The Last Dinner of the Titanic”  It was a true experience!  During dessert, we heard from three women of the East Carolina University School of Music Voice Faculty.  Their voices were lovely and very unique!  So that concludes Friday.  Whew!  Now to Saturday!

ECU Boat

We woke up BRIGHT and EARLY and joined the group for breakfast at the Chancellor’s House at 7:45am.  It’s always a treat to be invited to meet with the Chancellor, let alone to their house for a meal.  They had a beautiful breakfast buffet set-up for us in their dining room and tables beautifully set all over the lower level.  After breakfast, we were divided up into two groups of our choice for afternoon tours.  The first tour was going to be touring the Athletics Facilities and the second tour was going to the Underwater Archaeology Lab.  This was a really hard decision for my mom and I to make…we wanted to do both!  But decided on the Archaeology Lab and WOW…it was soooooooooooooo cool!

Archaeology Lab Tour

We were taken to see the treasure from Blackbeard’s shipwreck!!!!  I had NO IDEA that we were going to get to see all that we did.  I’ll break it down to you like this: not just anybody can go to this site and see the stuff that they’ve pulled off the bottom of the ocean, right off the coast of North Carolina!  They are excavating it from the ocean floor and then taking it here in Greenville where it is being documented, cleaned and preserved.  Each piece can take YEARS to get ready before it can ever go to a museum!  That was really one of the coolest experiences and I’m so glad I got to share it with my mom! I made lots of good pictures and could honestly spend a week there watching them work and seeing what all they are doing.  It’s like this:  they find a big rock/chuck of ‘dirt’ off the wreck site, bring it back to the lab, run it through the x-ray and can tell what’s inside of that ‘rock’!

With my buddy, Blackbeard the Pirate!

One example had a cannon ball, goblet and fork!  But to me it looked just like a rock!  They also had the cannons and anchor in the lab.  Really cool stuff!  After that, we met back up with the other group (they had a nice tour of the Athletic Facility) and heard from Dr. David Loy in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies on a presentation called “Scentsible” Solutions for Health.  It was about aromatherapy and the way it is being used to help patients.  We also heard from Dr. Lucas Carr, Associate Professor with Department of Kinseiology on some really cool athletic equipment for office space (whoever knew you could do an exercise bike while at your desk!).

ECU Women’s Roundtable Murphy Center Lunch

For lunch, we headed over to the Murphy Center where the College of Business did a presentation on a professional leadership course that is offered to students.  It takes them through all of the skills that they need to know in order to be successful in the professional world (mock interviews, business dinner, professional dress, etc.)  Again, we had such a wonderful time and met some really remarkable women. That concludes our weekend with the ECU Women’s Roundtable!  We are looking forward to next year!

High School Career Fair with Green Hope

High School Career Fair

Last week I had the nice opportunity to participate in a High School Career Fair for Green Hope High School.  The event was held on campus from 8:30am-noon.  There were about 1,600 students that came through to visit, ranging in freshman to seniors and 33 careers that were being represented. The students had to choose one business/service to interview and had to research/ask questions in depth to complete their required worksheet.  I liked this idea as it got the students engaged and encouraged them to interact with the career vendors.  For this High School Career Fair I took my usual tablet-top display items for Smith & Smith, CPA but also included a really unique promotional/marketing item.  I ordered miniature patriotic rubber ducks from Oriental Trading Company and wrote “Smith & Smith, CPA” across the front of the ducks with a sharpie marker (to make it permanent).

Rubber Ducks for Smith & Smith, CPA

I gave those out to the students who stopped by my booth to talk and they were a hit!  The students loved them because they were fun and cute and I loved them because they were unique and I was getting our CPA name in front of the kids on an item that they will more than likely keep for a while.  I’ll be ordering more of those rubber ducks to use at future events.  It just takes a little bit of time in the evenings at home to write “Smith & Smith, CPA” on the front.

GHHS Students

I really enjoyed the high school career fair and I always have fun talking with students and finding out about their future plans.  Especially the seniors, I love about hearing where they are going to school.  I talked to students who are going to attend the following schools: Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Wilmington, Appalachian, and East Carolina University (GO PIRATES!) I talked with the students about careers in accounting, marketing and how to start their own business.   I also told them about the requirements for becoming a CPA.  My table was right across from the NCACPA booth, so I was able to direct students across the way to speak with the NCACPA representative.

Oliva Scott of Promotional Partners

I saw my longtime friend, Oliva Scott of Promotional Partners at the high school career fair.  Olivia has strong ties to Green Hope and was featuring her company’s new logo (LOVE IT) and also a really cool new tabletop display that has a banner that runs across the top of the table!  Really cool!!!!  Contact her if you’d like to learn more about this product.

High School Career Fair

I took pictures of some of the students who stopped by; they sure do look happy don’t they!  It’s great to see students excited about accounting & marketing careers (haha)  I also had some of my cute lipstick Beccasblog.com pens that I ordered from my friend, Tobi Bowen of Your Brand Aide.  They are the COOLEST pens, they look like a real tube of lipstick but it’s actually a pen inside!  Tobi saw them through a vendor and thought of me right off the bat!  I’m very selective with them though and don’t give them out to everyone.

Wow…this has been a crazy week…hence the name of my blog!  Clients and Corona

Thanks David!!!!!

I’ll start with the Corona first…one of our tax clients, David Laxton, was awesome and brought us a case of Corona as a reward/gift for a crazy tax season!  He also included the limes!  Thanks David!  We’ll enjoy those (after office hours of course!)  So after tax season ends my calendar/schedule pretty much EXPLODES with meetings and events and this week has been good, but exhausting!  I’ve been in and out and in and out and out and in of the office so much that I have lost count!   But I’ve taken advantage of the time out and stopped by to say ‘HI’ and chat with several of our clients.  I was at a meeting with my new friend, Ann Close, owner of Close HR Connections (CHRC) and stopped by afterwards to visit with Joule Salon

Joule Salon

Owners Lou and Lisa Rivoli, have been clients of Smith & Smith, CPA for many years and we totally adore them!   I don’t get to see Lisa much, so I poked my head into her salon and snapped a picture of her in action with her adorable staff and clients.  Joule Salon has really cool & hip salon-style and her business cards read ‘hair, beauty, fashion and coaching’.   They are located at 4242 NW Cary Parkway (same shopping center as the Mellow Mushroom).  Go check them out!  They do amazing work for their clients!  Perhaps last week you might have noticed that we did a cool facebook marketing promotion with one of our clients, Vestique.

Carmen & Teddy

I stopped by their store last week to purchase the gift card we gave away during the facebook promotion.  Vestique is located in downtown Raleigh and happen to be in the same business complex as another client, Carmen Ritz State Farm Agency.  I stopped by to say hello to Carmen and her very friendly staff!  Carmen is always so much fun (and really good at her insurance stuff too) Her adorable dog, Teddy, was there and greeted me with lots of hugs and kisses.

He is such a cute dog!

I also had lunch this week with Sharon Moe of North State Bank, went to the Eye Opener Breakfast for the Cary Chamber on Wednesday morning where I sat with my friends Chuck & Anne Cook of Koko Fitness and my newest Cary Chamber member friend, Shelli Dallacqua (Shelten Media).  On Wednesday night, Blake and I attend the Cary Chamber Elected Officials Reception (held at the Matthew’s House in downtown Cary).

Priscilla and Becca

I was invited by my beautiful friend, Priscilla Bullock of First Citizens Bank to be a guest at her sponsor table for the TCREW Awards on Thursday afternoon. Thank you Priscilla, had a great time with you at lunch and glad we missed the monsoon of rain that afternoon!  This morning was the Career Fair at Green Hope High School…a blog on that event coming next week.  Still have to get up my blog about the East Carolina University Women’s Round Table too…that one will take 2 days of blogging.

Eric at Verizon

Last but not least, I’ve finally launched myself into the ‘technically world’ with a smart-phone and a tablet, thanks to Verizon!  I spent two days and nearly 5-hours this week working with the great team at the Verizon store in Cary Towne CenterEric Rainey was my main Verizon guy, Veronica was also very helpful too.  Now I have to find time to figure out both pices of technology!  Eric was great help at getting me set-up…but I’ve got some exploring to do!  Want to know something cool?  All three of my technology guys are named Eric….(Eric Green-my blog/social media guy, Erik Johnson with our CPA website company and now Eric Rainey with Verizon)!!!!

Triangle Ladies Lunch

Last week at the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch we heard from the very dynamic speaker, Denise Bennett.  Denise is the Vice President of Business Sales and Strategy at Wells Fargo in Raleigh, NC and is also President at DS Bennett Business Strategies.  She is also the author of “A Chosen Seed: from Mustard Seed to Abundance”, her latest book that offers 101 years of wisdom for abundant living (celebrating her grandmother’s insightful teachings).   I thoroughly enjoyed hearing her speak, she started with a story a birthday gift from a husband, a brand new bicycle, and finished up with a dramatic ending that had her modeling a fantastic & extravagant hat!

Becca with Denise and her book

Some of her main points during the luncheon included a quote from her grandmother… ‘Each day you can either be pitiful or powerful but not both.  You decide’.  I LOVE THAT!  She also talked about living your life in a way that makes people trust you.  She gave another quote “One day you are a peacock, the next day you could be a feather duster”…meaning to live each day to it’s fullest and take nothing for granted!  Also not to ‘less-in the lessons of life’…think on that for a moment.  Denise had her book for sale and also gave one to the TLPL Breast Cancer ‘she-ro’ during the lunch, it was not only signed by her, but ALSO by her grandmother…such a treasured gift!  (she-ro is code for FEMALE HERO)

I had a nice group of guests at my table: Susan Pruskin (QuickBooks Pro Advisor), Remi Haskett (Waddell & Reed), Chris Parks & Linday Wood (of Hand & Stone Massage), Pam Higdon (of Express Employment Professionals) and Rhonda Godsey (of Duff’s Design and Landscaping).

Kidd Photography

Jennifer Kidd of Kidd Photography was offering headshots for the attendees during the luncheon.  Jennifer is very friendly and easy to work with, she’s been a client of Smith & Smith, CPA for many years and I participated in the headshot offer.  She took several photos and later uploaded & emailed the images to me.  She does great work and is very creative.  She was telling me about a recent prom photo shoot that she did for local high school students that involved a back yard circus set-up! Find Kidd Photography on facebook to see the circus prom pictures!

Book Signing for Denise Bennett

The Triangle Ladies Power Lunch is known for their ‘shopping-hour’ that takes place before and after the luncheon.  After the meeting, many ladies (and guys) stayed around to network and make business connections.  I had to capture a picture of Denise at her book table.  Women who wanted to speak with her and get her to autograph the book surrounded her table.  Nice job Denise!   The next TLPL will be held on May 16th, hope to see you there!

This was a huge honor for Bob to be named as one of the Western Wake Business Icons (and for Smith & Smith, CPA as a whole!!!)   We were excited to see the article come out in the magazine (also available online) and we loved how Bob was labeled ‘FAMILY MAN’ because he truly is a FAMILY MAN.  The other Western Wake Business Icons were Dean Ogan of Rocky Top Hospitality and Kelly Shatat of Moon and Lola.  Click HERE to read the article.  I love how the intro to the article starts  Family, fashion and food aren’t distractions from work for the 2012 Business Icons — they are work.  These Triangle business owners started solo, growing their ventures from idea through expansion by doing what they love.”

Hurricane Grill & Wings with a 2nd Annual Easter Egg Hunt

Hurricane Grill & Wings

FINALLY…Hurricane Grill & Wings has their doors open for business!  The old Applebee’s restaurant that has sat vacant for years on Kildaire Farm Road has been converted and totally transformed into a new cool place in town to eat!  For weeks we’ve been watching the construction and changes take place and the “NOW HIRING” signs have been in the windows beckoning for people to apply.  The new place is called Hurricane Grill & Wings and it is a really neat new concept for our area.  Blake went last week with Cam for their GRAND OPENING NIGHT (when wings were only $.50 and they had $1 draft beer) and they both instantly fell in love with the food & atmosphere.

Hurricane Grill & Wings on Urbanspoon

Hurricane Grill & Wings red frisbee

I was able to go with Blake and our boys on Sunday night and inside is sooo cool, not at all what I was expecting!  It kinda has a Joe’s Crab Shack feel with a washed-beach/beachy-dock-theme and awesome décor.  Hurricane Grill & Wings has comfortable seating and a really great food & colorful menu!  They have booths & tables and a big private room behind the bar that can hold groups & parties.  I was hoping it might be large enough for my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club to hold our weekly meetings, but the room is just a tad too small for 50+ people.  But great for smaller groups!   Hurricane Grill & Wings is also a BRAND NEW CARY CHAMBER member!  What a great way to get new clients & business partners by joining the Cary Chamber!

I also spoke with Hurricane Grill & Wings General Manager, Susan Miller, while there with my family.  They brought some food on a cool red frisbee that is yours to take home, our oldest son thought it was really cool and can’t wait to toss his Hurricane Grill & Wings red disk around the yard this summer.

Life Experiences Easter Egg Hunt 2012

The Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club helped with our 2nd Annual Easter Egg Hunt at Life Experiences this week.  We started this event last year by asking our club members to bring in plastic eggs and non-chocolate candies.  Then one night after our regular weekly meeting we all gather round and stuff the eggs with goodies (including money coins!!!).  The folks at Life Experiences are so much fun and so grateful for this event.  Our 2012 egg hunt was held on Thursday, April 4th and the sun was shining and it was a toasty 84 degrees!  We did the egg hunt in two waves (we had over 300 eggs, so plenty for all).  Each group had a lot of fun and they are so adorable to watch find the eggs.

Click on the video below to see the egg hunt.  Plastic bags were used as baskets.

Hunger Games with Dakota Hood and More!

This past weekend was very exciting!  We were invited to a private screening of the new blockbuster hit movie, Hunger Games

Hunger Games with Dakota Hood

One of our client’s daughters, Dakota Hood, was featured in the movie!  Dakota was cast in the role as Tribute Girl from District 10.  Dakota’s mom and dad (Rock and Lisa Hood) had been by the office a few weeks earlier and were so excited to share the news with us of Dakota being part of the Hunger Games!  We’ve known the Hood family for many years and both of their kids, Dalton (older brother) and Dakota are sooooooooooooooo talented!  Dalton has been all over and around New York in Broadway and theater plays.  Dakota has a killer singing voice and has been in a fair share of theatrical productions too.  So on Sunday, March 25th, 2012, all of us from Smith & Smith, CPA ventured to north Raleigh to see the Hunger Games with Dakota Hood!  The theater was packed and we were all given cool lanyards with Dakota’s picture as District 10 Tribute on the front as our movie pass.  Sharon and I had both previously read the first book (it’s a trilogy) and I had filled Blake in on the plot earlier in the week.  The movie was really good, certainly not for children, and I thought it was true to the book.  Dakota was so happy to have so many friends and family members there to support her and cheer her on!  Every time she came on the screen the theater would erupt with applause and cheers!  I got her to autograph a few things after the show.  Now I can say I have the autograph of Dakota Hood from the Hunger Games!!  This is just the beginning of many more great things to come for Dakota!  And a BIG THANK YOU to Rock and Lisa Hood for inviting us to attend!  We do love this family!

Shelli and Kevin Dallacqua

I also had the pleasure of attending a BEAUTIFUL wedding at the lovely Matthew’s House in downtown Cary.  My friend Shelli Mayfield married her fiancé, Kevin Dallacqua.  This was my first wedding at the Matthew’s House (though I’ve attended numerous events there over the years) and it was so beautiful and eloquently decorated.  I know Shelli had wanted to have the wedding outside, but the weekend was full of thunderstorms and rain, so they moved the ceremony to the indoor banquet room.  Shelli was a very beautiful bride and Kevin was a handsome groom!

Friends at the wedding

Many friends from the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch were present at the wedding.  I spoke with several ladies during the cocktail hour that was held on the breezeway in-between the historic house and the banquet room.  I love how they had a signature frame for guests to sign as they arrived as they make the best keepsakes!  A nice buffet dinner and dance followed the cocktail hour and wedding ceremony.  So congrats again to Shelli and Kevin!

So despite the rain and yucky thunderstorms from both Saturday and Sunday, it was a fun weekend getting to see the Hunger Games with Dakota Hood and to witness the marriage of two friends!

We are down to our final few weeks (about 21 days) to get your 2011 taxes filed, or an extension put in!  Smith & Smith, CPA will continue to accept new personal tax clients over the next few days and we’ll complete as many as possible and will assist with filing extensions for those who need more time.  Just remember an extension is a grace period for more time to file, but NOT to pay (if you owe).  Please feel free to contact us for more information.  If you are happy with our service, please help us out with some reviews online!  Please click HERE to write a review (click the RED box that saysWrite a Review“)  Thanks so much!   Visit our website: http://www.smithandsmithcpa.com/ for more information.

Beth Wood, North Carolina State Auditor for ladies luncheon in Raleigh, NC

Ladies Lunch at North Ridge Country Club

The March meeting of the Triangle Power Ladies Luncheon, hosted by Carrie Peele of Blue Diamond Limo, drew a nice crowd of excited and energetic ladies!  With the warmer temperatures outside, there was certainly a buzz about spring felt in the air (and all that yucky-yuck yellow pollen too!!)  There were several new vendors around the room this month, including Hand & Stone Massage of RaleighDena Morris of Dena’s Jewelry Box also had her own 8-foot table this month, FULL of her beautiful handmade necklace pendants and earrings.  Dena has attended the ladies luncheon for three months now and has made new friends and sees the VALUE of this monthly event!  As always I try to make good use of my sponsorship table space and invited two clients to share my table.

My guests for the ladies luncheon this month were  Duff’s Design & Landscaping (Rhonda) and Install-Rite/Handy Man Service (Henry Miller) and Thacker Law Firm (Sarah Thacker).  I met several wonderful new friends at the ladies luncheon: Donna Parkinson of 9 Lyvz Catering, Barb Fields of Pretty In Pink Foundation, and Myra Ray of MyrayGraphix.  Myra is going to be the new goodie-bag sponsor for ladies luncheon.  The goodie-bags are always a favorite and all of the vendors/sponsors are invited to include a treat in the bags each month.  I was happy to see my sweet friend, Rita Sellers, Publisher, for Coffee News.  Coffee News is one of the best and most creative marketing tools in the area!  I’m sure you’ve seen one before; they are all over town in different restaurant & doctor office lobbies.  Rita was the lucky winner of the door prize from Smith & Smith, CPA (a decorative Easter Bunny set with a fresh loaf of xtreme cinnamon swirl bread right from the oven of Great Harvest Bread in Cary). Door Prizes are a HUGE part of the ladies luncheon!!!

Jennifer, Linda & Shelli at the ladies lunch

Jennifer Kidd of Kidd Photography was busy running around the room snapping photos of the event, but I was lucky enough to pin Jennifer down long enough to get a cute picture of HER with Linda Sellers, of Blue Diamond Limo and Shelli Mayfield, of Shelten Media.   We are all so excited as Shelli is getting married this weekend to her fiancé, Kevin Dallacqua, at the lovely Matthew’s House  in downtown Cary this coming weekend! Shelli’s company has really taken off and she’s become a HUGE part of the success for many women in our area.  Shelli recognized the importance of social media and helps her clients with all of their online marketing, blogging, tweets, Facebook, Google+, Youtube videos, etc.  She’s a real whiz at that stuff!  She’s also happy to announce her new business location at the Cary Innovation Center in downtown Cary!  The CIC is BRAND NEW and is a place for entrepreneurs to host their businesses headquarters and work with other master-minds on marketing, branding, advertising, business strategies, etc.

Sarah Thacker, Beth Wood, Carrie Peele, Sharon Roe, Julia West and Kathleen Volandt

The speaker for the ladies luncheon this month was none other than Beth Wood, North Carolina State Auditor.  Beth is a close friend of Carrie’s and she took the microphone to share with us her journey from a small town farm on the coast of North Carolina all the way to the state auditor’s office in Raleigh, NC.  Beth’s story was very encouraging and she shared with us the challenges she faced with her first election to office in 2008.  Her talk included a funny story about being a ‘work horse versus a show horse’.  Beth talked about her duties as State Auditor and even shared some examples of how her team has identified wasteful spending and the process of it being brought before the General Assembly. Beth will face re-election this coming Fall.

'She-Ro' of breast cancer with Carrie Peele

One of the most moving parts of the entire ladies luncheon was when the honored breast cancer ‘SHE-RO’ (that stands for a female hero) spoke on stage.  Each month the Triangle Power Ladies Luncheon hosts a table for a breast cancer survivor and she/he (we did have a guy one month) gets escorted in the pink limo along with their friends and family to the luncheon and sits at a special RSVP table with a pink table cloth.   Carrie invited the SHE-RO on stage to share her story and by the time she was done there wasn’t a dry eye in the room!  We’d like to thank the charity of choice for the ladies luncheon, Pretty In Pink Foundation, for all of the work, encouragement and support that their organization offers to breast cancer survivors in our community.  Hope to see YOU at the April ladies luncheon!

Charity Fundraiser with WBON of Cary for The CORRAL Riding Academy

I have some VERY exciting news to share with you!  Last week the ladies of WBON of Cary (Women Business Owners Network) held their Annual Fashion Show and Charity Fundraiser event at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary.

Friends at the Charity Fundraiser for The CORRAL

Our fashion sponsors were Kohl’s of Cary, Swagger Gifts of Cary and My Girlfriend’s Closet of downtown historic Apex.  Our charity of choice (nominated by one of our members and voted on by the WBON Board) was The CORRAL Riding Academy.  Here is the EXCITING NEWS…we raised $1,070 for The CORRAL at our charity fundraiser and that was done strictly through raffle tickets sales in just a short 2-hour time frame!  We sold raffle tickets for $10 and had a very nice assortment of prizes ranging from a Miche Bag & covers (thank you Dare Robertson) to a $100 gift card to the Angus Barn, a 3-hour limo ride by Blue Diamond Limo, a clutch by Sweet Diesel Designs, gifts from Sarah Miller (a long-time volunteer for The CORRAL), a shopping spree at Carolina Premium Outlets in Smithfield, Diva for the Day at Nirvelli Day Spa and SOOOOO MUCH MORE!  It was so wonderful to see all of the prizes that were brought in by WBON ladies and fellow supporters for our raffle drawing and charity fundraiser!

Ladies from The CORRAL

We changed the format of the charity fundraiser this year just a bit.  In the years past we’ve done a 50/50 raffle with the money raised, being that ½ of the money from raffle ticket sales would go to the charity and the other ½ would go to a lucky winner.  We did away with the 50/50 this year and decided that it was best to give ALL of the proceeds to the charity and I stand behind that decision 100%!  We were minutes away from starting the raffle drawing and had sold 91 tickets (our goal was to sell 100).  So we challenged the ladies to help us reach our goal and sold another 16 tickets in less then 2 minutes, putting us to a total of 107 tickets sold!  It was so incredible to be able to tell the ladies from The CORRAL that we would be presenting them with a check for $1,070 from our charity fundraiser fashion show event!Joy Currey, Founder/Executive Director, Jennifer Hyatt, Program Director and Becca Bishopric, Program Manager were all in attendance from The CORRAL and were very gracious for the support of the WBON ladies.  Joy spoke for about 10-minutes and shared a very heartwarming video during her presentation.

Charity Fundraiser with my mom, Marsha

I was very excited for this event because I had a special guest attend, my MOTHER!  Marsha Fleenor, my mom from Greenville, NC drove up for the day to attend the charity fundraiser and I was so pleased & honored to have her there!  She’s always been a huge supporter (and my biggest cheerleader) so it was great to have her there to witness the great things that the ladies of WBON are doing in our community.  The fashion show part of this charity fundraiser was a HUGE success as the models were our very own WBON ladies.  They had each visited their assigned location (either Kohl’s or Swagger) in the weeks prior and selected their outfits to model.  We coordinated with Lois Cozart (owner of MGC in Apex) for the accessories for the Swagger outfits.  It was important for WBON to include both Swagger (owner is Mandy Becker) and My Girlfriend’s Closet as both of these stores, owners & employees have been major supporters & members of WBON for many years. We apprecite their help for this fashion show!

Around 75 ladies attended

I took the clothes back to Swagger after the show and I was pleased to hear that THREE ladies had already been to Swagger to look for items that were modeled in the fashion show just hours before!  The only guy in the audience was Steve Hill, General Manager of Kohl’s in Cary.  Steve was joined at the luncheon by Marina Rad, Manager, of Kohl’s.   I can’t say enough good things about our experience in working with Kohl’s for the past two years for our charity fundraiser!  Kohl’s does a lot for our community and is constantly giving back through their many charities & scholarships.   Many thanks to all who attended the WBON Annual Fashion Show and Charity Fundraiser, especially to those of you who purchased a raffle ticket (or two or more!!!)
