Summer Camp Lunch

Summer camp has always had a special place in my heart.  I grew up going to summer camp, worked at a summer camp in college and I look forward to the days when my kids can go to summer camp.

Chick-fil-a for The Corral

A few months ago I had the joy of getting to know the wonderful girls and leaders of The Corral Riding Academy in Cary, NC.  I’ve been able to participate in several events with them and I look forward to working with them and the girls for years to come.  The Corral has their summer camp going on for the last two weeks of July and they are looking for local businesses & organizations to help provide lunch to the girls.  I jumped at this opportunity and teamed up with Rob Dyer and Diane Curfman of Chick-fil-a Waverly Place for a co-sponsored lunch.  I went by Chick-fil-a Waverly Place on Monday and they loaded my car up with boxed lunches for 20 girls/volunteers!  The boxed lunches included a hot Chick-fil-a sandwich, bag of chips, a delicious cookie and a fresh cup of fruit.  I also took two jugs of their famous sweet tea!

The Corral girls summer camp

The girls were still working on their morning sessions when I arrived (learning the parts of the horse, working on care & maintenance of horses, etc.) so I took some time to walk around the farm and watch the girls in action.  What a wonderful summer camp opportunity for these girls and they were all having so much fun.   We had lunch together inside, WHEW, it was a hot day!  The girls then spent the rest of the afternoon doing chores on the farm and having small group sessions.  They were all very appreciative of lunch and I can’t thank Rob, Diane and the whole team of Chick-fil-a Waverly Place enough for their support of The Corral.  If your business or organization would like to work with The Corral or provide lunch to the girls one day this summer, reach out to them soon as the days are filling up fast!

Happy 50th Birthday Cary Chamber

I love celebrations (I mean really…who doesn’t love a good celebration!?!?!)  Last week was a BIG ONE!  The Cary Chamber celebrated their 50th Anniversary and we were so happy to be a part of the big event!
Susan, Heather & Becca
The celebration was held in downtown Cary at the beautiful new Cary Arts Center.  The Cary Chamber was established in 1962 and had less then a dozen members with Thomas S. Secrest, Sr. as the first president.  You can read more about the history of Cary and the Cary Chamber by clicking HERE.  Let’s get back to the celebration party.  The event started around 5:30pm with a nice social and TONS of food and a good selection of both soft & adult beverages.  Blake and I attended the event together and saw many friends, clients and familiar faces.  We even made some new friends (always fun!)   We had the pleasure of meeting Lakshmi Challa, Attorney at Law & owner of Challa Immigration Law Office, LLC.  Lakshmi focuses on being a global attorney and works with clients on all of their immigration needs.  She was really fun to meet and I look forward to seeing her again soon at other Cary Chamber events! Around 7:15pm they ushered everyone into the theater for a show that was done in a “Jay Leno/Late Night with David Letterman” style.
Cary Chamber 50th Anniversary

Steve Zaytoun and Cary Chamber President, Howard Johnson, were the two major players of the theatrical production (produced by Creative Visions and Back Home Productions).  The production lasted about an hour and included several celebrity guests from the Cary area.  Some of the guests where people that have been in Cary for YEARS and included both military honorees (Colonel Shook) and even several members of the Ashworth family (one of the most well-known families in Cary).  There was even a live band, The Moonlighters Orchestra, which played during the show (they added all of the funny sound effects too).   Some other special guest included local business leaders (Angela Hampton from ABC-11 and Dr. John Sall, co-founder of SAS).

Founders Sponsors

My favorite part of the whole event was the video that they showed of Cary.  It highlighted all of the great places, parks, neighborhoods, and shopping/entertainment centers that make Cary great.  It also listed all of the accolades that Cary has received over the years; it really made you proud to live here!  There were many sponsors for this event (Gold, Silver, Bronze, Production Services, Video Production, Evening and Founders).  Blake and I were proud to be Founders Sponsors.

Sponsors list

And I have to mention that the dress I was wearing is from The Purple Polka Dot in downtown Cary and my earnings were from Vestique (two of my fave local places to shop!)  CaryCitizen did a fabulous job of capturing some really good photos from the event, click HERE for their online article.   Congrats again to the Cary Chabmer and to the STAFF members there who work so hard to keep the Cary Chamber great!

WomenNC.org in TedX Style

WomenNC.org ladies

Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club was so pleased to have two of the 2011-2012 WomenNC.org scholars attend & speak at our meeting in May.  Becca Bishopic and Anuja Acharya gave a very engaging and educational presentation in the TedX style (through a program at NCSU).  Their presentation included their experience with WomenNC.org and they shared with our club their recent trip to the United Nations in New York City!  It was so cool to hear about all of the neat women they had met from all over the world.  Becca and Anuja are both so well spoken and truly are phenomenal young women.  Violet Rhinehart, a retired Wake County Social Studies teacher and an Advisor for WomenNC.org also joined us that night.  After the girls finished their presentation, Violet did a wonderful job with a follow-up talk about WomenNC.org; their mission, passion and lives they are changing!  Thank you so much ladies for coming to share with our club!

RotaryGlobalRun4Water

Also go ahead and SAVE THE DATE for Sunday, September 30th 2012.  This is the date for our RotaryGlobalRun4Water race. This is an event that we are VERY excited about and are making BIG PLANS right now!  It will be a 5k race/run/walk and also a cool water-carrying event afterwards (to symbolize what other people around the world have to do for water).  It will start at 4pm at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.  Hope you can join us!  We are looking for sponsors, runners, volunteers and more!

I was finally able to attend the Cary Chamber Business of Women Luncheon this month.  I had missed the past two months because of other commitments.  I was so pleased to see that my friend, Eileen Stevie, President of Stevie Organizing Services, Inc. was going to be the speaker!  Her topic was interesting too…’Don’t be a Squirrel…Nature’s Guide to Getting Organized’.

Eileen of S.O.S.

Eileen’s presentation was very entertaining (she had lots of nature pictures included in her slides) and she told us that we’d have to wait till the END of the presentation to find out the meeting behind her program title.   Here are some really helpful tips that Eileen gave out:  “Excuses…we have to cut through them and just organize!”, “Everything that you bring into your life needs energy, money, care and SPACE!”, “Give stuff a HOME!  A drawer for the scissors, a shelf for the books, a basket for the mail, etc.”.  She said that there are four main types of clutter 1) Paper 2) Stuff 3) Time and 4) Mental and that you need to set goals and work towards reaching those goals (example; clean out the closet by Friday).  She gave some cool examples of ways that people get organized; one lady uses ziplock bags clipped to skirt hangers to organize paper & mail. She suggested getting a ‘clutter buddy’, someone who can help hold you accountable but can also keep you encouraged and will be supportive.  Eileen said that clutter comes with a ‘clutter back guarantee’, that it will come back if you don’t keep it under control!  There was a helpful handout on the tables that give tips on getting rid of junk mail (I need to check some of those out!).  And you are wondering about the squirrel topic now right??  Well…Eileen said not NOT be a like a squirrel, at how they run across the street but then zig-zag back and forth because they can’t make up their mind on which way to go and then SPLAT!…they become road kill.  Don’t be a squirrel…make a decision and stick to it!  Thanks Eileen, your presentation was excellent!

Crawfish Fesitval

Over the weekend we had the best time attending the 12th Annual Raleigh Crawfish Festival (informally referred to as “Crawfest”) with friends, Brian & Collean Killius.  The Killius family has been going for many years, but Blake and I had really no idea what to expect.  WOW…it was really, really, really fun!  The event was held in Raleigh on some personal property that had a huge open yard and massive trees all over (it was so pretty).  The weather was perfect, the crowd of people (500+ maybe) was all so friendly, and there was 500lbs of fresh live crawfish (straight from Louisiana) and tons of beverages for all.

Our kids had a wonderful time playing with the other kids, Trent just jumped right in with other kids playing soccer and Mark went crazy running all around and played with Carley on some of the riding toys.  There were several live bands playing (The Meteor Men w/ Driver & Collision Course) and the weather was perfect!

Crawfish time!

They had a big giant cooler full of the crawfish and Trent along with several of the other kids were running back and forth taking the crawfish out with cups of water (Trent kept calling his a lobster, guess to a kid they do kinda look like lobsters!)  When the sun went down they lit a huge bonfire.  Such a fun event, we look forward to many more!

The awesome ladies of the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch gathered together last week for the May 2012 luncheon.  It was a gorgeous day outside, though the chance of more rain and storms was looming.

Jane and Becca with LIPSTICK

We gladly welcomed the very energetic speaker to the stage, Jane Hight McMurry, author of “Navigating the Lipstick Jungle!” (and several other books, but this was the main topic of her talk).  Jane started out her talk with her giving her background of being from a small town, Henderson, North Carolina and how her mother sent her off to Oxford to study (her mother had never even been there herself, but had high hopes for Jane).  She had a really cool and fun interactive slideshow presentation and one of her favorite slides was one that said: “As women, we need to get what we want and deserve.  In order to do this, we need to: 1) Think like a man 2) Act like a lady 3) Look like a girl and 4) Work like a horse”.  She talked about her daughters and the lessons she has tried to teach them in life.  A few other quotes she said that were worth remembering to me: “A man is NOT a financial plan” and “Do not only do what is expected but, do MORE!”.

Deborah and Kim

Jane talked about there being more than one-way to do things and that “People are like crayons; different colors but we all have to live in the same box”. I really enjoyed hearing Jane speak and she loved my Beccasblog.com lipstick pens!  She wanted to have several over on her table where she was selling books because the lipstick pen went so well with her lipstick jungle book!

Katelyn McKay

I had a nice table of ladies and my guests this month including: Beth Donner of Diversified Planning, Nur Onvural of SilverCrest Homes and Tayloire Queen of Initials, Inc.  I had the pleasure of meeting Katelyn McKay, the 13-year old granddaughter of Ms. Linda (one of the two famous “Lindas” of TLPL).  Katelyn has her own photography business called Katelyn McKay Photography!!!  How cool!!!!  She’s super sweet and very good at what she does.  I loved getting to meet her and hear her story of how she got started.  Her tagline on her business card reads “A smile happens in a flash…its memory last’s a lifetime!” I also got to see a friend that I hadn’t seen in over a year, Rachel Lyons!  Rachel and I met YEARS ago and she now works with the wonderful team at Forrester & Associates Insurance Agency

Carrie, Marina, Nur and Tobi

The best part of the meeting was seeing one of the new vendors, Gigi’s Cupcakes of Brier Creek!  Owner, Marina Lee, was there and she’s super sweet (hence the company she is with!)  Marina and her husband, Maury Cole, work with their team to make these fabulous and delicious cupcakes!  Marina gave me a whole box to bring back to the office to share…do you think they made it back!?!?  Guess we’ll never know!  Thanks Marina!

One of my favorite things about life is that you never know whom you are going to meet or where you are going to meet them!  Goes back to my motto in life…”Always be willing to make a friend”

Lotus Survial Foundation with Angela & Becca

Last week as I was leaving the Cary Chamber Excellence Awards ceremony with Autumn LaBarca, we passed by a lady wearing a lovely black and pink dress.  I commented to her on how nice she looked and she stopped to say thank you and then handed each one of us an adorable miniature hot-pink pocket mirror!  How kind!  Turns out that her name is Angela Caraway and she was there at the awards ceremony representing the Lotus Survival Foundation.  They were one of the nine non-profit organizations that were nominated for the Charitable Partners Award.  Angela was very nice and even though they didn’t win this year, she said they were still honored to have been a nominee.  Angela is a volunteer for the Lotus Survival Foundation and actually owns her own company too, The Caraway Management Group.  It was nice to meet Angela and I’m hoping to have a volunteer from the Lotus Survival Foundation come as a speaker one week at my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club!

Rhonda and Theresa help their clients $AVE Money!

I also had the pleasure of seeing one of my sweet friends and a client of Smith & Smith, CPA, Theresa Lobdell, owner of Equity Savor Plus Realty.  Theresa was walking out with Rhonda Faucette, Home Mortgage Consultant with Wells Fargo Home Mortgage.  The two of them have teamed up together and are working with homeowners and sellers on offering them different workshops about home mortgages.  There are many options right now and Theresa and Rhonda both want the best for their clients.  They believe in having their clients educated on all of their home options and their workshops are FREE and really empower their clients with many tools.  You can reach out to either one of them to find out more (Theresa Lobdell HERE and Rhonda Faucette HERE).  Equity Savor Plus Realty was the 2011 Cary Chamber Excellence Awards winner for Innovation!

Honor a Teacher

Honor a Teacher Awards

A few years ago Smith & Smith, CPA was asked to participate as a sponsor in the Cary Chamber Honor a Teacher Awards Ceremony.  The sponsorship included a $1,000 commitment to a local school of the business choice.  Teachers from that school would be nominated by staff/parents and members of the Cary Chamber Education Committee would interview the top finalist.  A winner would be selected and would receive a nice crystal plaque and a check for $1,000, with NO STIPULATION on how to use the money.

Smith & Smith, CPA has several family members who have served as educators, so we felt like this would be a wonderful opportunity for our firm to give back and be involved in our local education system.  In 2011 we sponsored Alston Ridge Elementary School.  This year we had the pleasure of sponsoring Green Hope High School. I asked my mother-in-law (and former teacher for 17-years), Sharon Smith, and my sister-in-law, (former Physical Education and Softball Coach), Brooke Smith, to help me with the interviews. We met with our nominees in mid-April and had a wonderful time getting to know all of them!  Our nominees were: Cora Conde, Christopher Gaw, Erin Hussey, Melissa Poppe, Tracey Weigold and Al Ellis.  We asked each teacher the same questions and spent about 15 minutes with each one.  After much debate, it was a unanimous decision that Christopher Gaw was our winner. Gaw (as he likes to be called) had the entire package and really connected well with us during his interview.

Large crowd of nearly 400

We were impressed with his teaching philosophy and encouraged at how the events of Columbine led him into a teaching career.  Gaw says he has an “Indiana Jones” style of teaching and believes heavily in cooperative learning.  Some of his strengths in teaching include: relating well with kids, using stories from his corporate background (he is a lateral entry teacher), and teaching ethics to his students.  Gaw is a CTE Computer Programming teacher at Green Hope High School and works in the Career & Technical Education department.  He is a proud alumnus for both NCSU and Campbell University.  He also has a strong relationship with NetApp, a company for which Smith & Smith, CPA has a strong presence among many of their employees.  The Honor a Teacher Awards Ceremony as held on May 14th 2012 at Koka Booth Amphitheater.  Despite the rainy day, there was a crowd of nearly 400 people as 26 awards were presented.  I was pleased to have Bob join me for the Honor a Teacher Awards Presentation.  The winning teachers weren’t announced until that evening, so nearly all of the nominees were there from each school.  I was so pleased to see all of the teachers from Green Hope present.  I wish I’d had $1,000 check for each of them as they were all so wonderful.  Gaw was very surprised and very humble.  We wish him the best of luck and look forward to an ongoing relationship with him and Green Hope High School.  Thank you to the Cary Chamber for this wonderful Honor a Teacher opportunity.

Cary Amtrak Station hosts National Train Day

Cary Amtrak Station

This past weekend was an exciting and new event in downtown Cary, National Train Day!  The Heart of Cary Association partnered with Amtrak and the Town of Cary to host this FIRST TIME event at the Downtown Cary Railroad Station. (held at the beautiful new Cary Amtrak Station)  We were hoping to get there a little early because The North Carolina Railroad Company was handing out Train Whistles for the first 200-children, however, we didn’t make it in time and from what I heard…the 200 whistles were given out in less than 5-minutes!  Amtrak was handing out cute paper train Conductor Hats to all of the kids, Trent wore his but Mark didn’t care for it.  Go figure!  The Cary Town Band was present and they preformed selections from their Planes, Trains & Automobiles repertoire as the Amtrak Carolinian train #80 arrived (we got there JUST IN TIME to see the train pull into the Cary Amtrak station).

Train Arriving

There was plenty of food vendors and tables around, selling everything from coffee to burgers.  Keith Bliss spoke on behalf of the Heart of Cary Association and several other dignitaries were introduced.  We saw lots of friends and our kids had a fun time walking around and seeing the festivities at the Cary Amtrak Station.  Next year they need to include a microphone and a few more things for the kids to do (bounce house, kid-play area, clown, etc.)  There was a Princes and Pirate kid face paint area, but we skipped that since Trent was having a baseball game later that day.  It was really cool to see the inside of the Cary Amtrak station, first time I had been inside since the remodeling had been completed.  They were giving away a trip for one lucky family-of-4 for a trip ANYWHERE that Amtrak travels on the East Coast…I haven’t gotten a winning call/email yet, so guessing that we didn’t win.  Bummer!

Keith Bliss & Heart of Cary Assoc.

Blake and I did a Amtrak trip years ago and had a nice time.  We also traveled by train for several trips during my years at ECU and for a relaxing time…the Amtrak is the way to go!  Inside of the Cary Amtrak Station there was a cool train display by The Carolina Piedmont Division of the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA).  The boys really enjoyed looking at the different train models.  The Cary Creative Center had a booth set-up where kids could make their own train-related items; they had a train made out of cracker boxes (as the railroad cars) and water bottle caps (as the wheels).

Cary Creative Center

After the festivities we took advantages of being out on such a nice day, so we walked around downtown Cary.  It is amazing the things you see when you are walking (compared to the things you DON’T get to see because you are driving).  We waved through the door to our client, Bridgette Bordonaro, owner of Beautimous Beads.  We started to go in and say hello, but figured Mark would be a hazard inside.  She has such beautiful stuff, love her store!   We spent sometime looking around inside of Ashworth Drugs and my father-in-law got my mother-in-law a lovely Mother’s Day card as well as a cute little furry creature that makes squeaky noises.  Cute.

Lunch at Havana Grill

We then walked about ¼ of a mile to a delicious restaurant, Havana Grill!  It is a Cuban restaurant and has been open for about 5 ½ years.  I’ve never been but had heard it was a good place to eat.  It was very appealing to us because of the great outdoor eating area and it had room for the kids to play.  The Havana Grill is known for their Authentic Cuban Cuisine and the owner, Robert (I think is his name) was very friendly, took our order (it is a pay & seat yourself) and brought our food out to us.  They have Family Karaoke Night every Friday (hmmm…wonder if they would let me butcher some Bon Jovi over karaoke???), Zumba classes and also “Dance Under the Stars” on Saturday nights with Salsa, Disco, and more (my parents would LOVE that).

Awesome outdoor patio at Havana Grill

Their outdoor patio is amazing; our boys had so much fun playing out there.  It was packed inside and out by the time we were leaving.  We’ll be back soon to eat!  Oh yeah, we had the Cuban hamburgers and they were very tasty and very different!  Never been? You gotta go!  And check out the Cary Amtrak Station while you are in downtown Cary too!    Havana Grill on Urbanspoon

Cary Innovation Center GRAND OPENING!!!!

Shelli, Beth and Sheila at the Cary Innovation Center

Welcome to the Cary Innovation Center!

This is the ‘brain child’ of Sheila Ogle, a wonderful lady and a major part of the success of downtown Cary!  The CIC is all about ONE MAIN THING…can you guess???  ENTREPRENEURSHIP!!!  It’s a place that was designed for helping entrepreneurs create, launch and operate their business by providing professional mentoring and business education programs.  The programs will provide the opportunity for clients to be successful in both economic growth and jobs.  The Cary Innovation Center had their OPEN HOUSE/GRAND OPENING last week and I was pleased to be invited to attend.

Welcome CIC!

There were several distinguished guests there, Beth Wood, NC State Auditor, and several members of the Cary Town Council and local government officials.  My good friend and fellow Triangle Ladies Power Lunch member, Shelli Dallacqua, owner of Shelten Media, is one of the current residents of the Cary Innovation Center. Know of a local entrepreneur with a BIG IDEA looking to get started? Send them to the CIC and let their growth begin!

Cary Chamber Excellence Awards Luncheon

Cary Chamber Excellence Awards

It’s a challenge for me sometimes to get Bob and Blake out of the office together at the same time.  Even to attend a community event (and one that has FOOD) but occasionally, I am successful.  This week I was very proud to attend the 2012 Cary Chamber Excellence Awards with BOTH Bob and Blake!  Cam was taking a CPA exam, so we left Sharon at the office to hold-down-the-fort (she did a great job by the way, but was VERY happy to see us return in the afternoon).  As you remember, Smith & Smith, CPA was the winner of the Cary Chamber Excellence Awards in 2011 for Employer of the Year (we were Robert G. (Bob) Smith, CPA at the time, but it was still us!)

Smith & Smith, CPA table guests

This year we were pleased to participate in the Cary Chamber Excellence Awards as a Table Sponsor and invited a very nice group of family, referral partners and friends to join us at our table.  Our guests included: Jenn Rossi of MediScribe, Tracey Fillingame (WakeMed), John Caron, David Hellinger and Chad Griffith (all from LPL Financial), Autumn LaBarca of HealthSource and Chad Harris of Farm Bureau InsuranceMayor Harold Weinbrecht was present at the awards and made some opening comments about Cary’s continued recognition in the United States as a great place to live, work and play.  Howard Johnson (President of the Cary Chamber) and Tom Huff (Chair for the Cary Chamber) welcomed the crowd and recognized the sponsors.  I was honored to be included in the afternoon program and as a member of the Board of Directors, was given the opportunity to present the Judges Critique.

Chad, Bob and John

All of the 2012 Nominees were announced and were asked to stand as their business picture/logo was shown on the large screens at the front.  In total, SEVEN different awards were presented.  The categories of winners were as follows (the winning company is listed after the award name):  Innovation Award (Parkway SleepHealth Centers), Community Service (Great Harvest Bread of Cary), Green Plus (The Umstead Hotel & Spa), Employer of the Year (Carolina Restoration Services)  Entrepreneurial Award in Education (Davis Drive Middle School), Charitable Partners Award (Thrift N’ Gift) and the 2012 Small Business of the Year (MMi Publications).

Parkway SleepHealth "GREAT POSE"!!!!!!!

In the years past, I’ve had the honor of helping judge the Entrepreneurial Award in Education (sponsored for 13-years in a row now by Huntington Learning Center , owner, Mike Gallagher).  The winner of the award this year, Davis Drive Middle School, was recognized for their effort to stop bullying with their STAND UP program.  Nice job Davis Drive Middle!  I personally know many of the winners and have had the opportunity to use their services/products, so it was really exciting to hear them be recognized with an award.  I know our award from last year opened many doors for us and it will do the same for each of these winners.  Congrats to them all!  And also congrats to the other nominees for the work & efforts they are making in our community on a daily basis.

2012 Small Business of the Year winner!!!!!

Do you know a Cary Chamber member who is working hard to make our community better and better and better?!?!  Be sure to nominate them next year for the 2013 Cary Chamber of Commerce  Excellence Awards!
