Wind Down Wednesday and MORE at Waverly Place

Waverly Place with friends

Waverly Place with friends

So I have a new obsession…it’s called Waverly Place in Cary.  Seriously, I can’t get enough of this cool venue!  It is one of my most favorite places to hang out with friends, family and my kids.  Waverly Place was upgraded & remodeled about 2 ½ years ago and has really become a whole place of its own.  It has a unique blend of shops, offices, restaurants and service providers.  Waverly Place is located at the corner of Tryon Road and Kildaire Farm Road in Cary, North Carolina.

It has quickly become a destination experience for residents of Cary and the surrounding area.  Waverly Place has one of the most beautiful promenade areas and includes a really great playground for the kids plus a splash pad!  Waverly Place is now holding all kinds of events, socials, live music and entertainment during the week.  Last Friday we went with family and friends (and most of our Smith & Smith, CPA office) to hear The Windsor Oaks Band (good friends of ours) open for The Craig Woolard Band.  There was tons of food, activities and great music!

Bob, Blake and Trevor

The concert on Friday night was also a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Rally for the Cure and kicked off the weekend events for the “Rock the Loch” held at Lochmere Golf Club. The weather was awesome and the lawn was full of families and friends with blankets and lawn chairs.  Shane Smith, one of the lead singers with The Windsor Oaks Band, has been a friend of the Smith family for many years and even played the guitar in our wedding 8 years ago.  The Windsor Oaks Band is a local band and is currently booking more gigs for this year & next.  They are great if you are looking for a local band to play for your event!

Becca, Shane and Katherine

Every Wednesday from May –August is an event at Waverly Place called Wind Down Wednesdays.  Each week features a different band and lots of great food!  We were there this past Wednesday to hear The Band of Oz!  Sooooooooo good!  One of the newest restaurants at Waverly Place that just opened in late April is Barberitos, a southwestern grille & cantina.  The Operating Partner, Brad Bullock, is very nice and is excited to have such a prime restaurant space at Waverly Place (they are right off of the promenade).  Barberitos is also a new member of the Cary Chamber!  Wind Down Wednesdays will feature 14 weeks of free Wednesday night fun, a place you want to be this summer on Wednesday nights!

Mark and Menchie

Here is a cute picture of Mark, our little guy, with the “Yogurt Friend” from Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, another one of my kid’s favorite places to go for a good snack at Waverly Place.  We have had the pleasure of seeing lots of our tax clients and even some of our small business clients up at Waverly Place.  It’s kinda fun to see clients outside the of office!   Every Saturday is also the Waverly Farmers Market, a community market that features fresh, local produce, baked goods, meats, honey, preserves, juice, baskets, jewelry, artwork, crafts, music and MORE!  We haven’t made it out there for the farmers market just yet, but we have plans of getting there soon!  So what do you say!?!  See you at Waverly Place soon for Wind Down Wednesdays and more!  And thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for the white summer dress that I wore to the Rock the Loch concert…it is a BCBG Max dress!  Super cool and comfy for an out door concert!  Shop at her store and recieve 10% off your total purchase for mentioning Beccasblog.com!

Cary Chamber says “Women ONLY” for the Ladies Golf Tourney

Ladies Golf Tourney

Ladies Golf Tourney

Last week I had the pleasure of playing in the Cary Chamber of Commerce Ladies Golf Tourney.  That’s right…WOMEN ONLY for this golfing event!   The Cary Chamber holds this ladies golf tourney once a year, typically at Lochmere Golf Club in Cary.  I played a few years ago with some friends and had a wonderful time!  So this year when Delancy (Vice-President at the Cary Chamber) announced that the Putting Green Contest would benefit the WBON of Cary Scholarship Fund, I knew I had to get some teams together to play!

Team 2 for WBON of Cary

Team 2 for WBON of Cary

WBON of Cary was pleased to have TWO wonderful teams of AWESOME women out there playing in the Ladies Golf Tourney.  Seriously, we were about as awesome as they come!  We were there to have fun, laugh, network, and yes, even play a little bit of golf!  The weather was “okay“…it had rained over the weekend, so the course was nice and soupy/soggy/wet for us, but we really didn’t mind.   I had the pleasure of playing on a team with Susan Pruskin, Dr. Heather Sefried and Autumn LaBarca.  Our other WBON of Cary team consisted of Lisa Cotter, Wendy Howington, Judy Fourie and Dorothy (from Nirvelli Day Spa).

Thanks for the purple clubs Margaret!

Thanks for the purple clubs Margaret!

We had to borrow clubs from friends, thank you Margaret Neill for letting me borrow your lovely purple clubs!!!!  Autumn had arranged for our two teams to have matching pink “LADY TIGERS” shirts from White Tiger Taekwondo, along with matching aluminum water bottles.  Thanks Master Rondy!  Even though we might not have played the best golf, we sure did look great playing in the ladies golf tourney!  Thanks to Peggy Hoffman and Frida Darmawan (both from WBON) for helping with the Putting Green Contest.  Thanks also to the Cary Chamber for including us in this ladies golf tourney!

The Carying Place Fashion for the SOUL and the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary!

WBON Annual Charity Fashion Show

WBON Annual Charity Fashion Show

Yesterday was a crazy busy day!  It was the WBON of Cary Annual Charity Fashion Show & Fundraiser.  Proceeds from the event benefited The Carying Place and we were able to raise around $1,100 for the organization!!!  The fashion show was so much fun and we drew a crowd of over 100 people!  This year we hosted the event at Tony’s Oyster Bar in Cary and worked with fashions from Kohl’s of Cary and My Girlfriend’s Closet of downtown Cary & downtown Apex.

Fashion for your SOUL

Fashion for your SOUL

Other sponsors for the event included WBON members, who sponsored different fashions in the show, as well as Foot Solutions of Raleigh , who sponsored the auction shoe tables.  The fashion models were women from our very own WBON group and even some of their employees and children.  It was really fun to see some of the children in the fashion show, especially when they walked out with their moms onto the runway!  Everyone was greeted at the door where they had an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for the 30+ pairs of CRAZY-FUN-SHOES and handbags that were displayed around the room.  Guests were also invited to ‘walk the red carpet’ and have their picture taken in front of the cool WBON banner (thanks to Steffanie Lafors of A Photographic Memory by Steffanie for taking all of the pictures for the event!)

Friends for fashion!

Friends for fashion!

Every attendee was given a greeting card with a shoe on the front and that was used to direct them to their table.  We later used the cards to write notes of encouragement & support to women at The Carying Place.  One of my favorite things about the whole fashion show was to see how many women from other networking groups were there to support The Carying Place and us!

The Carying Place girls

The fashion show was broken into two different parts and we had a little intermission in the middle where we heard from Kohl’s, The Carying Place, and My Girlfriend’s Closet. Our Kohl’s rep was Marina Rad, and she talked about the charity work that Kohl’s does in the community through their employees.  The Carying Place ladies shared their story and gave some really inspiring stories about women and children who have benefited from the works & support that is offered by The Carying PlaceLois Cozart, owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet, also shared about her store and some of their events this summer.

Letters of encouragement

Some WBON volunteers took the opportunity to sell more raffle tickets during the intermission and it was “FINAL CALL” for all shoe tickets.  We did a few ‘shoe raffle’ before the second part of the fashion show started back up and then gave away the rest of the shoes at the end of the meeting.  Thankfully I was the lucky winner of two fabulous pairs!  I can’t thank all of the ladies enough who helped put this event together.  I am so proud of this wonderful group of women!  And thanks to Lois & My Girlfriend’s Closet for my awesome dress by Muse!

J.P., Becca & Ronnie at TAC for Cary Chamber Business After Hours

After the fashion show, I came back to the office for the rest of the afternoon.  The Cary Chamber of Commerce was holding their March Business After Hours at the Triangle Aquatic Center, over behind Cary Towne Center Mall.  I am helping lead the Cary Chamber Membership Drive this year, so it was really encouraging to see several new members attending the Business After Hours.  Doherty’s Irish Pub provided the delicious food, just in time for the St. Patrick’s Day spirit!  I was the LUCKY winner of the grand prize drawing…an Annual Family Membership Pass to the Triangle Aquatic CenterSUPER COOL!  Here is a picture of me with Ronnie Roach, Director of Business Development and J.P. Lefever, Event Manager.  The TAC is an amazing place and I remember when Mike Curran was getting the TAC started many years ago! It’s so rewarding to see his dream in action and to see how many kids & families enjoy coming there to swim, complete and be active!

Every December the Cary Chamber of Commerce treats their Ambassadors to a Holiday Breakfast.  This is a fun morning to really honor the dedication of the Ambassadors to the Cary Chamber.  It’s also a good time to see friends, catch-up and talk about events for the coming new year.  The Cary Chamber has lots of great events planned for 2013, so it’s a wonderful time to help bring in new members too!  The membership drive will officially kick-off in February 2013, stay tuned for more!

Our office has been buzzing for the past two weeks with clients in and out bringing sweet treats and delicious desserts!  Thanks to all who have stopped by and brought kind gifts.  See the pictures below!

What in the World Does that Blog Title Mean???
Jug items

Funny story to share with you… Last week we were wrapping up our final notes on the GlobalRun4Water and Scott Rossi shared with us some of the items that were found in our water jug collections.  We had collection jugs at different places around town and were successful at collecting nearly $1,000 in dollars/coin donations!  Here is a picture of the random items that came from the collection jugs…a screw, sawed off penny and five foreign currency coins.

WBON of Cary has their Annual Holiday Gala & Scholarship Auction coming up quickly in a few weeks on Tuesday, November 13thfrom 5:30pm-7:30pm at Homewood Suites in Cary

Grace Li Wang art work

The WBON scholarship is nearly 11 years old and has been awarded to 19 women totaling $36,000 in funds that has been used towards furthering education, training and skills in their particular line of business.  I’ve made a nice new friend this year named Grace Li Wang.  She was the Town of Cary Lazy Daze Featured Artist for 2011 and I met her this year at the 2012 Lazy Daze event.  She has generously donated a lovely packet of her unique designs on note cards as an auction item.  I went by her house to pick up the gift and had a wonderful time talking with her.  She has a fantastic talent and calls her work “Art with a touch of Grace”.  Her work has been featured all over town, most remarkable to me at Stonehaven Jewelry Gallery in downtown Cary. Her work is sold at Southern Charm in Cary Towne Mall and also at Bull City Art and Frame Co.  Thank you Grace Li Wang for your donation to the WBON auction and for your new friendship!  She’ll be at the Lochmere Arts & Crafts show too on Saturday, November 10th.  Stop by to see (and purchase) her work!

Mother-Son Date Knight

Now to the “Mother Knight” part of my blog title…Earlier this week I took our boys to the Chick-fil-a Waverly Place for the Mother-Son Date KNIGHT!  We pulled up in the packed parking lot to witness a real life knight performance!  Three guys were dressed in full knight gear and were having a ‘battle of the wits’ right in front of us!  The boys loved it and the clash and clang of metal swords and shields was really exciting.

Knight Fight!

Once inside we found the whole right side of the restaurant decorated like a castle, complete with a bridge over an ‘alligator filled creek’ and a “Knighted Cow”.  We had a nice time eating with the table-side-service and the boys each brought me a bright red rose!  They did some cool kid crafts and we had a wonderful time talking about knights, bravery and what it means to be a hero.  Thank you Chick-fil-a Waverly Place for hosting such a fun event!  I even found & booked a magician from the event for Trent & Mark’s upcoming birthday party in November!

Math & Science For Kids & Families

Math & Science Night

A few months ago I received an email from Allison Wrenn, Director of Finance & Education at the Cary Chamber of Commerce about a Math & Science Night at a local elementary school.  Farmington Woods Elementary was looking for local business owners who had businesses that were related to math & science to participate in their evening expo.  Alison heads up the Cary Chamber Education Committee and Principle Pierce of Farmington Woods IB/PYP Magnet Elementary School had asked Allison to share the email invitation with the committee.   I’ve been a member of the Cary Chamber Education Committee for many years, so I was very excited about this opportunity!  Clearly our business, Smith & Smith, CPA fits nicely into the ‘math’ part of the Math & Science night, so I went to work on getting my expo booth plans laid out and thinking of activities I could do to engage the children in some fun math and money learning.

Smith & Smith, CPA Halloween Bags

I used my normal vendor booth stuff, but also included a few more ‘new’ marketing props.  Mr. & Mrs. CPA Pig made their appearance and I also used my new GIANT American Flag umbrella as a good center piece and had pieces of fake money hanging down.  It looked really neat, though I must admit that the umbrella base was CRAZY heavy carrying in from the car.  There were three other vendors there with me for the event (there was supposed to be 8 of us total, but Principal Pierce said that four of them had backed out earlier this week!)

Talking with kids about Math & Money

I had also ordered really cool Halloween bags with our logo on the back plus safety tips and a giant pumpkin face on the other side.  They are great bags, I’m very pleased with the way they turned out!  They are good and sturdy with handles.  The kids and parents really liked them!  I’ll also be giving them to some local preschools and kindergarten classes to use for their Halloween parties at the end of October.  One of the best marketing tools yet!

Waddell & Reed- Remy

The other vendors were; College Nannies and Tutors, Waddell & Reed and Feed the Bin.  We all worked really well together and I gave out fake dollar tickets to students as they came by and encouraged them to visit Remy Heskett(Waddell & Reed) at her booth behind me to register to win one of her giant piggy banks!   The PTA had a meeting before the Math & Science event started and after that we had tons of kids & parents stop by to say hello and check out our stuff.  I was soooooo thankful to have my sweet friend, Autumn LaBarca there.

College Nannies & Tutors

She was a big help to me!  I talked wit the kids about money and knowing how to count different bills, use money to buy items vs. just a credit card and how you can have a career that works with money (CPA, banker, financial advisor, etc.).  There were other classrooms throughout the building that had different Math & Science events & activities going on.  The main area for our booth & expo was held in the cafeteria. I really enjoyed talking with the kids and even saw some friends and clients!

You need to know MATH!

I love having Smith & Smith, CPA involved in our schools, especially programs & events like this.  It’s an easy way to help bring real-life-work-experience into the schools & classrooms.  I hope the kids & families had a great time! I’d like to thank the Cary Chamber and Allison Wrenn and Principal Pierce for such a great experience!

Cary Chamber Celebrates Another Strong Year!

Shelli & Kevin

Last night was a fantastic night of honor, awards and recognition for the Cary Chamber.  It was the 2012 Annual Banquet, held at the lovely Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, NC.  The evening kicked off at 6pm with a social (some people were so ready to get the evening going that they showed up at 5:30pm!!) and was followed by dinner at 7pm, then the keynote speaker (Bob IngramFormer Chairman & CEO of GlaxoWellcome), and the awards presentation.  This is such a fabulous evening and we had a great time seeing friends and business colleagues.  Shelli Dallacqua (Shelten Media) and her hubby, Kevin, were walking in the same time as us, they were also waiting for Beth Wood to arrive.  Shelli looked lovely in purple, which must have been the ‘color of the night’ as my other good friend, Susan Pruskin (Susan Pruskin Consulting) was wearing purple too (and her hubby Steve, but he wasn’t in purple, haha).

Susan & Steve

Events like this really depend on great sponsors, so as a member of the Cary Chamber Board of Directors, I’d like to extend my personal thanks to those companies who helped sponsor the evening: Presenting SponsorWakeMed Cary Hospital, Gold SponsorsRex UNC Health Care and Hendrick Cary Auto Mall and Town of Cary, Silver SponsorsProgress Energy and Siemens, Speaker Sponsors: AT&T and Back Home ProductionsTable Sponsors: Atlantic Tire & Service, BB&T, BlueCross/Blue Shield of NC, Capital Associates, Carolina Hurricanes, First Citizens Bank, Highwoods Properties, Paragon Commercial Bank, Preston Development, SAS, The Umstead Hotel & Spa, Wells Fargo Bank and Withers & Ravenel.

Ambassador of the Year...Autumn!

The highlight for me of the whole evening is always the awards ceremony!  The Cary Chamber presents three different awards during the evening: Ambassador of the Year, Business of the Year and Citizen of the Year.  The Ambassador of the Year is voted on by all of the Ambassadors (so it’s real honor to receive) and the winner this year was Autumn LaBarca!!!!!  Congrats Autumn!!!   Autumn is the Director of Public Relations for Capital Financial Advisory Group, LLC.

Howard Johnson, Cary Chamber Citizen of the Year 2012

The Business of the Year award was presented to Hendrick Cary Auto MallThe Citizen of the Year award was a very special and heart filled award this year…it was given to the Cary Chamber President himself, Howard Johnson!  Only the Executive Board (4 people) knew it was going to Howard and he was totally shocked!  Howard has been with the Cary Chamber since 1986 and has been a solid figurehead in our community for many years.  Howard’s son even sent a text message video of him congratulating his dad and they showed it on the screen.

Blake & Becca Cary Chamber Banquet 2012

Tom Huff (Chair 2011-2012) ended the night with a recap of the events from the previous year and then welcomed the new incoming Chair, Kathy Burns, to the stage.  I am very much looking forward to Kathy’s leadership this upcoming year!  It was such a wonderful night and we are so blessed to live, work and play in Cary!  No better place to be!  The Cary Chamber is ramping up for a very busy Fall calendar, don’t miss out on all of their educational and networking events!  And I’ve love to give a very special shout-out to My Girlfriend’s Closet in Apex for styling me in this totally fabulous dress!  It was a huge hit; I had tons and tons of compliments on it!  I owe it all to Lois and her staff for helping me select such a lovely piece!  You can find this dress at the My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex!

The last week of August was really awesome for me.  I had a CLEAR schedule that included ZERO out-of-the-office meetings! YEA!  I seriously think that’s the first time I’ve had a week like that.  It was great and I really got a lot of stuff done around the office.

Koko FitClub

I took advantage of the ‘free week’ and stopped by Koko FitClub one afternoon.  Our good friends, Anne and Chuck Cook are the proud owners of the Koko FitClub franchise here in the Cary area and I had promised Anne that I would stop by and check out the place.  It is really cool and by far a nice change of pace from the regular ‘gym-workout’ type places.  Blake was with me when we stopped by and we were given a quick tour by Chuck and even got to witness a couple working out.  Koko FitClub includes technology into your workout and you never get bored with the same-ole-routine.  They are offering a complimentary session that includes strength training with their Smartrainer (the technology part I told you about).  Stop by to see Anne & Chuck and check out Koko FitClub!

Thank you Union Bank!

Also had a nice visit last week with the ‘new kids’ in town…Union Bank & Trust Co.  Jessica N. Register (Treasury Services Specialist) and Larry Holt (Cary Market Executive/Senior Vice President) stopped by our office to introduce themselves to our office and to share the news of their office now in the Cary market.  They came baring gifts (always a good thing around here) and their gift was delightfully perfect…a fresh loaf of cinnamon swirl bread from Great Harvest Bread Company!!  Jessica and Larry are very excited about Union Bank (a community bank) and are looking forward to getting involved in the community.  We enjoyed the bread and any gift from GHB of Cary always makes a nice impression (and I’m not just biased since my friends, Paige & Tom own the bakery!!!)  Hoping to see Union Bank join the Cary Chamber soon too!

Gina at MGC

I went by My Girlfriend’s Closet in Apex last week to see Lois, Gina and the girls.  They were very busy with their annual Labor Day Sale in full swing.  I snapped this fun picture of Gina working the cash register; it was ‘smoking hot’ from all of their sales, so Gina was wearing some fashionable shades to keep out the glare!  Gina is always so helpful to clients & customers at MGC and did you know that she also runs a real estate company?  She’s the proud owner of Gilliam & Associates Realty, LLC (a full service residential real estate boutique brokerage firm in Apex, NC).

Eagle Scout Ceremony

Eagle Scout Mike & Becca

I had a very humbling experience over the weekend.  I was invited to attend the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Michael James Kunath.  I met Mike’s mom several years ago through some local business networking groups and was approached last year about helping Mike with his Eagle Scout project.  I arranged for Mike to speak at my Rotary Club (Cary-Kildaire), where he presented his project that would help him earn his Eagle Scout.  Ironically enough, the project was to build a wooden glider that would be used at Life Experiences (one of our Cary-Kildaire Rotary members is the Executive Director for LE) so it was a perfect fit for our club!  The Cary-Kildaire Club helped to fund Mike’s project and he was off and running!  Mike spent the next several months working on completing the project and the requirements for earning the Eagle Scout

Life Experiences Project

The ceremony on Saturday was very nice and it included a nice display of his project, his ranks/years through Boy Scouts, his achievements as a student at his school and his community work overall.  Clearly Mr. and Mrs. Kunath have sooooo much to be proud of in Mike!  There were several distinguished guests at the ceremony and each of them had something wonderful to say about Mike and presented him with several neat & unique gifts (American Flag, certificates, medallions, etc.)  My favorite part was when Mike spoke and thanked all of the many men and women along the way who helped him achieve his goal of earning the Eagle ScoutCongrats Mike!  Well deserved!  Mike is off to attend Notre Dame this week, wishing him the best of luck!
