Boosterthon FunRun Support

For the past two years, Smith & Smith, CPA has been a proud supporter of the Boosterthon FunRun at two Wake County Schools, West Lake Elementary and Oak Grove Elementary.

West Lake FunRun 2017

The Boosterthon is a fun way for the kids to raise money for their schools.  The kids are encouraged to ask family & friends to support them with a donation/per lap.   On the FunRun Day at their school, they join their other classmates in an active morning of running laps outside (weather permitting) to earn their donations.  It is a super fun activity and a great interactive way for the kids to support their school.  Cam & Brooke’s kids had their Boosterthon FunRun a few weeks ago and we were proud to see Smith & Smith, CPA on the back of the shirts.   They each ran 30+ laps at West Lake Elementary!

Oak Grove FunRun 2017

Track 1 at Oak Grove Elementary had their FunRun today and it was really cool to see Smith & Smith, CPA on the back of their shirts too!  They also let us hang up our company banner.   Track 2,3 & 4 at Oak Grove will have their FunRun on Sept 18th.  Best of luck to all the kiddos and the schools to reach their fundraising goals!

Cary Chamber Business After Hours with KB Homes

I used to have the pleasure of attending the Cary Chamber Business After Hours on a monthly basis.   Then my schedule became a little more complicated and I wasn’t able to attend them very often.  Last week I finally made it out to one!  It was held at the new KB Home site in Cary, near Crossroads Shopping Center.  I had my good friend & orthodontist, Alena Spielberg, meet me at the event.  We had a good time together touring the house and networking with the other guests.

Season Tickets at Koka Booth

Blake and I made the decision earlier this year to purchase season tickets at Koka Booth Amphitheater.  It has been such a fun experience with over 88 shows, concerts, movies and festivals to attend!  It works really well for us too since we live only about 5 minutes away!  The season felt like it was staring to wind-down as our last event was on Aug 12th…almost a month ago!  But it is really just staring to gear up again and there is a full season ahead for the Fall.

Rock of Ages Koka Booth with Christine & Tia

Last night we went to see the theater production of “Rock of Ages”, performed by the Theater Raleigh.  The weather was perfect and we had a great time with friends & family!  We have 5 more events there alone for the month of September!  It is going to be BUSY!

Summer to Fall?

Are you like me and ready to transition your Summer closet over to your Fall wardrobe?  If so, be sure to keep my favorite store in your mind…My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex!

I was there this week stocking up on some great seasonal-transition items for these upcoming Fall cooler days & nights.   Be sure to check out their great selection of trendy jeans, tops and must-have jackets!  Tell them you read about them in Beccasblog.com and get a special discount at check out!  Both tops I have on in the photos above are available for purchase at MGC!  Keep it real and ShopLocal!

Have a great weekend!

Power Breakfast Networking and 5-Years Marketing Partnership Celebration

Triangle Business Journal

TBJ Power Breakfast #tribizpower

I started out very early this morning (as in I left my house before 7am) to attend the Triangle Business Journal Power Breakfast.   The breakfast networking event was held downtown Raleigh at the City Club and featured a 4-person panel on Community Banks and their role in our ever changing community.  Panel speakers were: Larry Barbour of North State Bank, Scott Custer of Live Oak Bancshares, Ray Grace who is the NC Commissioner of Bankers and Bob Hatley of Paragon Bank.

Gift from Delta Dental & Program of Guest Speakers

The panel was lead by Jason Christie, Market President & Publisher of the Triangle Business Journal.  The program focused on how community banks are amid an unprecedented consolidation trend in the US and one that has not been witnessed in more then two decades.  The panelist talked about the newly formed banks and how that is impacting loan activity, branch size & locations, and the key factors behind the consolidations.  All of our business clients at Smith & Smith, CPA have banking needs and I knew many of the bankers in the room as a result of networking friendships formed from the Cary Chamber of Commerce.  I found the program to be very informative and beneficial to understand more about the banking industry in North Carolina.

Maggie, Becca and Stephany

The program was sponsored this morning by Delta Dental of North CarolinaElaine Loyack, Director of Community and Public Relations for Delta Dental gave the opening remarks and shared a video about their Smiles for Kids program.  Elaine is a friend and client of ours at Smith & Smith, CPA.  Delta Dental provided a nice gift bag for all attendees that included a new toothbrush and multi-outlet car charger.

Elaine of Delta Dental

I attended the breakfast with my friend Stephany Connelly of AppleOne Employment Services.  I also had the pleasure of meeting Maggie Stroud, Alumni Relations and Program Coordinator for Leadership North Carolina, a program in which I have been interested in for many years!  Thank you to Brian Reid of Paragon Bank for taking a picture this morning of me with Stephany and Maggie.

5-Year Marketing Celebration

5 Year Anniversary for MGC and Beccasblog

So August 10th is the 5-year anniversary mark in which I have had a special partnership with Lois Cozart and her retail resale boutique in downtown Apex, My Girlfriend’s Closet.  Yes, friends, that is right…5 years ago Lois sent me that WONDERFULLY unexpected email asking me to partner with her on the most BRILLIANT marketing/promotion plan in the world!!!!  Ever since that day, I have been graced with the opportunity to be dressed by the stylist at My Girlfriend’s Closet for all of my networking & social events.  It has been such a crazy and fun 5 years!  I have worn all kinds of different styles, designers, colors, crazy shoes, beautiful jewelry, unique handbags and more!  It has been so much fun and we have both seen our businesses grow and thrive as a result of this partnership.  Thank you Lois for such a unique opportunity and I look forward to 5 more years!

Lunch at The Provincial

We celebrated together on Monday with lunch at The Provincial in downtown Apex.  This delicious restaurant happens to be a client of Smith & Smith, CPA and the food is crazy delicious!  Next time you are in downtown Apex, stop in to see Lois at MGC (and shop a little too) and then head down to The Provincial for a great meal.  Tell them Becca sent you!  And of course the pink lace dress I am wearing today is from My Girlfriend’s Closet!

Vacation is OVER!  Back to Work!

Ahhhhhhhh…that time of year when vacation is over (so long beach week!) and we are back to work!  We had a great time last week at Myrtle Beach with the Smith family…good weather, no shark bites, only a tad bit of sunburn and lots of relaxation!  But now back to the grind….September and October are not too far away…which means deadlines for extended personal and corporate tax returns.  But another blog soon to come on that.  Let’s focus on some new & exciting things for clients of Smith & Smith, CPA!

Avery County Rotary Club in Banner Elk, NC

July came and went really fast!  It’s typically a quite time around the office, a month we use to get caught up on some work and get some planning done for the rest of the year.  I had an opportunity in mid-July to travel to Banner Elk, NC to drop-off and pick-up our oldest son, Trent, from summer camp at Holston Presbytery Camp.  On my trip back up to the NC mountains (my fave by the way), I was invited to speak to the Avery Country Rotary Club by club member, Larry Hazen.   Larry and I met years ago when we attended Rotary PETS before our year as Club President.  This was such a fun opportunity and I loved meeting all of their club members and sharing my personal Rotary Story with them.  I took along a Rotary Flag from my own Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club and traded flags with their Club President.  So cool!  I love their flag…mountains and a fir tree!  I will present the flag this week to my Club President, Andy Wright.

Thanks to Lois Cozart and her team of fashionistas at My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex for keeping my closet full of the latest trends & beautiful designs.  I shop with them monthly and the pink cold-shoulder top I wrore to the Avery County Rotary meeting is from their store!  Shop there and tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get a special discount at check-out!

Today wraps up the end of my year serving Life Experiences as the President for the Board of Directors.  It has been such a fantastic experience and one that I took very seriously.  I have been involved with Life Experiences for many years now and will continue to serve another 3-year term on the Board.   I am so grateful for this special group of people and for all of the friendships I have made along the way.  Thank you to the Board members who served with me this past year and we have another big year ahead of us!   Part of my heart will always be and belong at Life Experiences!

TBJ 40 Under 40 Awards 2017

Today Blake and I had the privilege of attending the TJB 40 Under 40 Awards for the Class of 2017  #40U40Awards

#40U40Awards

Our close friend, Travis Wright Colopy, was one of the honorees this year and his nonprofit company, Fit & Able Productions hosted a table and invited Blake & I to join them to celebrate!   The awards luncheon was held at the Marriott City Center in downtown Raleigh.

Travis & Anna

It was so much fun to be there to celebrate with Travis & his family, including his girlfriend, Anna Garner, plus his mom & dad, grandparents from Ohio and brother, Glen, who came from Germany!  Each recipient was called to the stage to receive their award and had approximately 1-minute for a thank you speech.

Congrats to the winners!

They shared their “Personal Hashtag# with the crowd and told why it was meaningful to them.   They also had selected a song that would be played when their name was called as they walked to the stage.   I enjoyed hearing all of the fun songs and learning more about each winner through the explanations of their personal hashtags.

Travis in the TBJ

Travis said his personal hashtag was #wedontsayno and his song was Kryptonite by the band 3-Doors Down.  The publication of the Triangle Business Journal that came out today has all 40 recipients listed and goes into greater detail about the reasons they were selected.

Smith & Smith, CPA client in the TBJ

It was nice to see one of our clients from Smith & Smith, CPA listed as a winner, Matthew Leerberg of Smith Moore Leatherwood.

Travis, Anna, Becca & Blake

Thanks to Lois Cozart and her awesome team at My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex for helping me shop for this stunning Cynthia Rowley pink & purple dress!  Lia Sa of Fleur de Lia Alterations had to adjust the hemline for me and she did a fantastic job!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com when you shop there for a special discount for my shoppers!

Rotary International Convention with 40,000 Friends

I honestly didn’t even know I had 40,000 friends, but after coming back from the 2017 Rotary International Convention in Atlanta (got home today), I really kinda feel like I do!  That’s crazy right?  Everyone at the convention was really friendly and even though I didn’t know all 40,000 of their names & where they live & the language they speak, we all shared a common smile and a passion for doing good in the world.  That’s the best part of Rotary after all!

Becca & Blake for Smith & Smith, CPA at Rotary International Convention 2017

It was really nice to have Blake along for the whole event and we had a total of 17 club members & families there from our own Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club.

Club members of Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club

The mornings were spent in opening sessions with engaging speakers on the topics of Eradicating Polio, Stopping Human Trafficking, and the role Rotary plays around the world in so many lives.  We heard from Bill Gates, Ashton Kutcher and John Cena, plus Jack Nicklaus,  the Mayor of Atlanta and many more!

Lots of Rotary people!

Some of my favorite parts included the Google EndPolioNow Virtual Reality three-minute film called ONE SMALL ACT #ENDPOLIO, that was offered to the largest crowd ever at one gathering spot!  Pretty cool!

One Small Act with Google

Virtual Reality with Google and Rotary

I also really liked the Hall of Friendship, a HUGE vendor/booth area that featured Rotary Clubs, Rotary Projects, Merchandisers and Vendors all with resources for Rotary!  Being that this was my FIRST Rotary International Convention, I had heard great things about the Hall of Friendship, but seeing it & experiencing it for myself was just really a great opportunity.  I also loved the presentation of the Country Flags during the Opening Ceremony on Sunday…over 125 countries and some that I am ashamed to say I had never even heard of, let alone know where they are located!

Country Flags

Tour at SweetWater Brewery

During the afternoon breaks and evenings, we had dinner with friends at some really delicious restaurants, as Atlanta does have quite the restaurant scene!  We also took time to tour SweetWater Brewery and went to a comedy show at the Laughing Skull.

The Famous Rotary Pin Man

Thanks to Lois Cozart and her team at My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex for helping me pack a comfy & flexible wardrobe for the trip!  Comfort really was the key for this trip as most of the event were casual and relaxed in nature.

So it’s back to work as usual, but I have lot of wonderful memories (and photos) to help me remember how much fun we had representing Smith & Smith, CPA at the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta 2017.  We have already made plans to attend the 2018 Rotary International Convention in TORONTO, Canada!  Can you find me hiding in the Toronto photo?

Can you find Becca hiding in the photo?!?!

Rotary Pig Pickin’ & Joining the AENC

Last Saturday, June 3rd 2017, was my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club’s 31st Annual Pig Pickin’ in the Park!  It was a HUGE success, with perfect weather, over 800 people fed delicious BBQ, a record number of sponsorships and the MOST we have ever made on our major fundraising event!  Our final numbers are still pending, but it looks like we are pushing close to $50,000!!!!  This fundraiser supports our college student scholarships as well as our local & global humanitarian projects.  Many thanks to ALL of our great sponsors, especially the ones who sponsored on my behalf: Sharon Lewis Homes, Gilliam & Associates Realty, Second Empire Restaurant, Chick-fil-A Waverly Place, Nirvelli Day Spa, Fit & Able, David Hellinger LPL Financial, Dennis Sargent Law, Randy Walker of Walker Design Build, Elizabeth Asbill of Edward Jones, Jerry Kozel of JTK Mediation, 5Star Awards, Riccobene Family Dentistry, Swift Creek Animal Hospital, Owen Robinson of Keller Williams Realty, Smith Family Dental Solutions, Rally Point Bar & Grill and the Matthews House in Cary.

AENC Membership!

AENC Affiliate Roundtable

Last week I officially joined the AENC, Association Executives of North Carolina.  I have been to several of their events in the past with Rotary and with my good friend, Christine Johnson, who is a member of AENC through her job with FirstPoint Resources.  It is a group I have been interested in for a while and I’m so excited to finally be a member!  I used the remaining funds from my WBON of Cary Scholarship to join!  This morning I attended the Affiliate Roundtable discussion with the topic: “How Do I Get in the Door?”  It was very informative, I took 4 pages of notes from the speakers: Aubie Knight, Linda Stinson and Jim Booth.  I can’t wait for the next event!

Jim Booth shares Best Practices

Blake & I are off to Atlanta for the 2017 Rotary International Convention!!  It’s our first time going, so we don’t really know what all to expect, but we know it is going to be FUN and AMAZING!  I will be sharing on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube

First Responders Lunch Morrisville Chamber

Lindsey, Nancy & Becca

I had the pleasure of attending the First Responders Thank You Lunch, hosted by the Morrisville Chamber of Commerce.  I was invited to attend by my friend, Nancy Seymour, who hosted a table with Atlantic Tire & Service.  Nancy and I have been friends for several years and our common bond is our love for dogs!   The luncheon was held at Noah’s Event Place in Morrisville and featured a very nice buffet lunch.  The purpose of the First Responders Thank You Lunch was to allow the business community to honor those hardworking individuals who put their lives on the line for others every single day.  First Responders in attendance were from the following groups: Morrisville Police Department, Morrisville Fire Department, North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the Wake County Sherrif’s Office.

Morrisville Police Department

The luncheon was also a fundraiser for the 200 Club of Wake County, an organization that provides immediate financial help for the families of police officers, sheriff deputies, fireman, EMS squad members and North Carolina State Highway Patrol serving in Wake County who lost their life in the line of duty.   Atlantic Tire & Service was the Award Sponsor for the luncheon, so Nancy was asked to introduce the Morrisville Police Chief, Patrice Andrews.  Chief Andrews gave out an award to a police officer on her staff who is one of their K9 officers.   I really enjoyed the luncheon and seeing so many men and women from the police, fire & EMS all in one room made you feel very thankful and appreciative for the work they do for our community.   Other guests at our table for the luncheon included Lindsey Chester, Judy Fourie and Lana Callaway.

Thank you to My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex for the light blue silk chiffon dress I wore to the luncheon.  Be sure to tell them you read Beccasblog.com when you shop there!  Always a special discount for my referral shoppers!

RDU Impact on the Region

Last night I had the pleasure of attending an event at the RDU General Aviation Building in Raleigh called: “RDU: It’s Impact on the Region”.  The program was sponsored by First Citizens Bank and I was a guest of Liz Cantino.  The guest speaker was Mike Landguth, President & CEO for RDU Airport Authority.

Liz and Becca

His program was very informative about how many passengers go through RDU each year, the financial impact it has on our region, new & current flights/destinations, and what the future holds for RDU.  I really enjoyed the program and appreciate Liz inviting me to attend!  We have many clients at Smith & Smith, CPA who bank with First Citizens and I am so excited for Liz to now be on their team!  She recently joined their bank about 30 days ago and is in the role as Vice President in Business Banking.  She is in the Cary office off of Kildaire Farm Road, so right down the street from my office!  Congrats Liz!

Change in Plans

Yesterday afternoon I had a change in plans for a luncheon I was planning to attend.  Since I was already over in the Raleigh area, I called my good friend, Christine Johnson, and met her for lunch as an early Birthday celebration (today is her actual birthday).  We had a wonderful lunch at the new Seasons 52 at Crabtree Mall.  Oddly enough, Seasons 52 is part of the Darden Family Restaurant group, which also owns Red Lobster, where I used to work and where I met my husband, Blake!  I LOVE how they celebrate your birthday there…with a HUGE Birthday cake ‘tree’, plus a card and photo!  I’ll be back there for sure to eat and celebrate!  Thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet Boutique in downtown Apex for helping me find this Diane Von Furstenberg dress!  It was a great dress for the hot summer heat yesterday.  Shop their store for great deals on awesome summer dresses and accessories.  Tell them you read Beccablog.com for a special discount at the register!

Happy Birthday Christine!
