Women of Western Wake & Lifetime Achievement Award

Today I had the pleasure of attending an event that I go to EVERY SINGLE YEARThe Women of Western Wake, presented by Cary Magazine.

This event is held at the end of October at the gorgeous Umstead Hotel & Spa in Cary.   This year marked the 10th year for the awards luncheon and I was honored to sit at a table with my friends in the Cary Women’s Giving Network.   We decided to all go in together and sponsor a table so we could have the opportunity to tell other ladies about our group!  Over the years, many of the ladies in our Cary Women’s Giving Network have been featured as the award winners for The Women of Western Wake and this year was no different.  But it was a VERY SPECIAL year as our very own, Sheila Ogle, was selected as the FIRST EVER Lifetime Achievement Award Winner in honor of the 10 Year Anniversary!

Cary Women’s Giving Network

Needless to say, Sheila was totally shocked!   This recognition is very much deserved for Sheila and it was a gorgeous huge swirly and heavy award!   We all laughed as the award colors looked perfect with her dress and shoes (see picture below!)

Award and her shoes!

The 2017 Women of Western Wake are as follows: Nicole Dozier, Leigh Duque, Gayle Greene, Fara Palumbo and Miss Vatinet.  Congrats to them all!  Enjoy the photos from today’s luncheon.

Marketing to the Millennials with Jeff Fromm

Mary, Susan, Sheila and Becca

Mary, Susan, Sheila and Becca

Anyone else start their morning off super early?  It’s been a long day but a great day and still more to come!  I had the pleasure of attending the Women on the Move meeting this morning at the Downtown Clubs of Raleigh (used to be the Cardinal and Capital City Clubs but are now combined into one).  My dear friend Susan Pruskin invited Mary Madenspacher and me to join her at the early morning meeting.  The guest speaker at Women on the Move was Sheila Ogle (one of our favorite and most admired women in Cary, and all of Wake County).  Sheila shared her personal career story and engaged the ladies in the room into a conversation about “What Success Means to You“.  Sheila broke “Success” down into the areas of: Trusting Yourself, Breaking Some Rules, Working Hard, Giving Back, Surrounding Yourself with Successful People, and Not Being Afraid to Fail.  Thank you Susan for inviting me to breakfast and the Women on the Move really are ‘women on the move‘!

This afternoon I attended the May meeting of the Triangle AMA (American Marketing Association).  The guest speaker was Jeff Fromm, EVP at Barkley advertising agency and co-author of a best-selling new book, “Marketing to Millennials: Reach the Largest and Most Influential Generation of Consumers Ever“.  I thought Jeff did a terrific presentation and I learned so much from him about this very diverse and adventurous consumer group!  He addressed the areas of consumer loyalty, preventing boredom, and engaging the consumer.  He stressed the importance of Brand Authority and creating a Uniqueness to validate your price authority.  He talked about reaching Millennials by having a company that is “about more than just your bottom line” and showed a ton of really cool product marketing videos and how they are using real time date with content management.

I’ve got some great ideas now for Smith & Smith, CPA…especially for videos and other ‘disruptive‘ techniques!  Thanks Jeff for coming to speak to Triangle AMA and also for taking time to get a quick selfie with me on your way out the door (I ran across the room after the meeting to track him down for a picture!)  I’ll be back at Triangle AMA in June and I’m taking our Summer Intern, Trevor, along with me to hear about the story and marketing creativity behind the Travelocity gnome!

Be careful out there tonight in the crazy rain and storms! I’m off to Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club…feel free to join me!  Thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in the Blue Nanette Lepore dress!  It is so unique and I’ve had tons of compliments on it all day long!  Lois and her staff know how to dress women of all different shapes and sizes for all types of events!  Shop their downtown Cary and downtown Apex stores and tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get 10% off your total purchase!

2013 Cary Community Foundation Grant Awards Breakfast

2013 Cary Community Foundation Grant Awards Breakfast

Last Friday I attended the Cary Community Foundation 2013 Grants Awards Breakfast at the lovely Matthews House in downtown Cary.  The Matthews House is a client of Smith & Smith, CPA, and a very beautiful place for events of all kinds!   I joined the Cary Community Foundation Board earlier this year and it has been a fun opportunity and I’ve met some wonderful community leaders.  I helped serve on the Grants Committee this year and we had over 25 grant applications to read through and compare.  It was so hard…I wanted to give them ALL grant money!  I had tears in my eyes as I read through the grant applications.  We had $7,000 to give out to all of these worthy organizations.

Susan, Elise and Becca

The grant awards were divided into different categories, which made it much easier to judge.  The Cary Community Foundation President, Carla Liberatore, hosted the Grants Awards Breakfast and opened the morning with a welcome.  Sheila Ogle of the Matthews House offered the invocation and then breakfast was served buffet style (and it was sooo yummy and healthy!)  Vice President, Laird Hepburn, gave out all of the grant checks and asked each recipient to speak briefly about their organization and how the money would be used to benefit the good of those in the Cary Community.  Once again, some of the stories that the grant recipients shared really brought tears to your eyes.  It is so rewarding to know that the money is being put to good use for those who really need an extra hand in life.  One of my favorite non-profits, The Corral, was the recipient of grant money that will be used towards after school educational supplies for the girls at The Corral.

Another one of my favorite grant awards was given to Hospice of Wake County for a signature piece of art that will be put in the bereavement garden and will be focused on children and their healing needs.  The morning event was very special and I think everyone left the breakfast feeling blessed and uplifted.   Congrats to all of the grant award recipients!   I enjoyed seeing lots of friends and also would like to thank, Liz Cantino from VantageSouth Bank for joining me as my guest.

WBON Mega Networking Time!

Winners!

Winners!

Earlier this week on Wednesday, WBON of Cary held their Annual Fall Mega Networking Event.  This year the event was held at the beautiful Matthews House in downtown Cary.   The Matthews House is a client of Smith & Smith, CPA, so I always enjoy going there for events!  Sheila Ogle, owner of The Matthews House, was very gracious to have WBON there for our Mega Networking and she even joined us for lunch.  The room was full of ladies and we enjoyed lunch and open networking before the meeting.

WBON Friends

WBON Friends

President Christine started the meeting, welcomed all of the new guests, and invited all of the new members up front to introduce them to the group.  Lots of new members this month, YEA!  There was a really funny announcement made about the Murder & Mayhem event that is going to be held on November 20th called “Killing for the Crown”.  This will be the WBON Scholarship Fundraiser this year (instead of an auction as done in the years past).  It sounds like it is going to be lots of fun and I can’t wait to go!

Full room at The Matthews House

Full room at The Matthews House

The whole focus for the Mega Networking event it to get to meet and talk to as many ladies possible in the room.  WBON has done this many different ways over the years.  This year, we decided to give everyone a chance to stand and speak for 30 seconds.  That’s right…just 30!  And it goes fast, so you need to be prepared and ready to go!  We added a twist to make it more fun and had three WBON members serve as judges for the “Most Creative, Most Unique and Most Memorable”.  Fun stuff right!?!  I prepared mine the day before and even took a short trip over to Party City to pick up a few supplies for my 30-seconds about Smith & Smith, CPA.

Lock it up!

Lock it up!

I could tell a few other of my friends had also prepared in advance as they also had some cool props!  I loved hearing all of the ladies speak and tell their stories.  Some were really funny, a few ladies were nervous, but that is expected if you are not used to speaking to a crowd.  But it is all for fun and for the sake of new business connections and support!  In the end, Cindy Prince won for Most Unique; Dr. Heather Sefried won for Most Creative; and yours truly, Becca Smith, won for Most Memorable!  YEA!  I took a big gold crown and called myself the “Queen of Numbers”…I had a large wand with a $ on the end and set of handcuffs warning ladies to keep up with their numbers so they can stay out of jail.  Funny, unique, a little crazy and yes…Memorable!  I got one of the new WBON logo coffee mugs as a prize.  Kudos to all of the other winners and to the WBON Board for their hard work with this event.  Well Done!
And thanks to Lois Cozart, owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet, for dressing me in this lovely and really unique dress by Boston Proper!

Pinnacle Awards with Brenda & Shelli

Yesterday I had the distinct pleasure of attending the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce Pinnacle Business Awards.  I was a guest of The Matthew’s House of Cary, thank you Brenda and Sheila for the invitation!  The Matthew’s House is also a client of Smith & Smith, CPAThe Matthew’s House was being honored with an award in the “Individual Entrepreneurial Company Awards” section as the winner in the 10-25 Employee category.  Super congrats to them!!!  Sheila Ogle, owner of The Matthew’s House, went on stage to accept the award and we all cheered so loud for her!

Congrats to the winners!

Congrats to the winners!

It was such a fun luncheon and I enjoyed being part of The Matthew’s House table.  My good friend, Shelli Dallacqua, President of Shelten Media, was also at the table and she was busy keeping social media up-to-date on the progress of the luncheon awards.  The luncheon was held at the Raleigh Convention Center in downtown Raleigh and was hosted by Penn Holderness of NBC-17/WNCN.  There were several other award winners from the Cary area and a big CONGRATS to my dear friend and fellow WBON of Cary Board member, Karen Albright, for her company, BodyLase Skin Spa for winning an award in the “Steady Growth and Profitability Award” category!  Congrats to all the winners.  Thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for styling me in the silver ruffled metalic Trina Turk blouse.  Mention Beccasblog.com the next time you shop at My Girlfriend’s Closet (downtown Cary & downtown Apex) and get 10% off your total purchase!

Last week was also the ShopLocalRaleigh May Morning Social and it was held at the corporate office of Pretty In Pink Foundation.  I was impressed with the good crowd of people, especially considering it was the Friday of Memorial Day weekend.  I enjoyed meeting Dr. Anna Abernethy, she is part of the dental team at Renaissance Dental Care, located in the North Hills Shopping Center in Raleigh.  I also enjoyed talking with John Stanton, President/CEO of The UPS Store.  He currently owns two UPS Stores in the area and is expanding with a third store to the Cary area very soon.  Congrats to both Dr. Anna and John for the success and growth of their new & expanding companies!

The Story of Mickey and Matthew…

Chad & Katie First Dance

Chad & Katie First Dance

I guess you are asking yourself…”Who is this Mickey and Matthew” that she is blogging about?  Well, I will tell you!  Mickey and Matthew represent a large part of our Mother’s Day weekend (last weekend).  Blake and I traveled to Orlando, Florida, the home of Mickey Mouse (hence the Mickey part) for a family wedding.  My lovely cousin, Katie, married her handsome fiancée, Chad, at the Disney Wedding Pavilion and had their reception at the Grand Floridian Convention Center.  The wedding was beautiful and we had a wonderful (kid-free) long-weekend visit.  Katie’s older sister, Kyle, also got married at the Disney Wedding Pavilion about 6 years ago and we were able to attend that beautiful wedding as well.  So certainly one of the many benefits of working in a family business is being able to adjust your schedule so you can have a day of work-vacation to travel and celebrate those special occasions in life.

Blake for the Great Gatsby pose

Blake for the Great Gatsby pose

Blake thought he was pretty snazzy posing with lovely car that was parked outside of the Grand Floridian Hotel…I think Blake was trying to channel his inner “Great Gatsby” because he knows the movie recently came out and that I am DYING to see it sooner than later!  I think he looks really sharp and really nice!  We really enjoyed our mini-vacation; we stayed at the All Stars Movies Resort and attended the La Nouba Circque Du Soleil show at Downtown Disney.  That night we had dinner at Wolf Gang Puck and spent four hours at Disney Quest (like a giant Dave & Busters indoor arcade).

Becca for Gatsby too

We flew Southwest and had a wonderful experience with them (as always). Thanks so much to my Uncle Kevin and Aunt Debbie for helping us with our travel arrangements for the wedding!  Thank you also to Lois Cozart from My Girlfriend’s Closet who helped me select a lovely floral one-shoulder Ralph Lauren dress for the Circque Du Soleil show and a fantastic bright orange/pink belted sundress for the wedding!  Her store is the best place to shop for summer wedding and other great events!  Her prices are hard to beat and their brands are endless!  Thanks Lois!

Bob & Sharon with the boys at The Matthew's House

Bob & Sharon with the boys at The Matthew’s House

And now let me tell you about Matthew…while we were gone to Orlando, my parents graciously came and kept the boys for us.  Since Sunday was Mother’s Day, my father-in-law, Bob, invited my parents and the boys to join him and Sharon at The Matthew’s House (client for Smith & Smith, CPA) for their Mother’s Day Brunch.  My parents were thrilled with the invite (they love Bob & Sharon just like I do) so they practiced all weekend with the boys about sitting nicely and using their manners, because The Matthew’s House is a very nice place!

Sharon & Marsha with the boys for Mother's Day

Sharon & Marsha with the boys for Mother’s Day

The scrumptious menu included asparagus, pork lion, scalloped potatoes, Swiss chicken cutlets and several other delicious items.  Our parents really enjoyed the brunch together and Sheila Ogle was even kind enough to give them a tour of the house.  The Matthew’s House is a wonderful place to have wedding as well as corporate events, charity auctions, networking meetings and more!  Their tagline is “When You Have the Need to Feed…remember The Matthew’s House” as they also offer off-site catering (we had a delicious catered meal from them during ‘tax season 2013’ and it was sooooooo good!)

So HEY!  It’s the WEEKEND!  Do something FUN!

Cary Innovation Center GRAND OPENING!!!!

Shelli, Beth and Sheila at the Cary Innovation Center

Welcome to the Cary Innovation Center!

This is the ‘brain child’ of Sheila Ogle, a wonderful lady and a major part of the success of downtown Cary!  The CIC is all about ONE MAIN THING…can you guess???  ENTREPRENEURSHIP!!!  It’s a place that was designed for helping entrepreneurs create, launch and operate their business by providing professional mentoring and business education programs.  The programs will provide the opportunity for clients to be successful in both economic growth and jobs.  The Cary Innovation Center had their OPEN HOUSE/GRAND OPENING last week and I was pleased to be invited to attend.

Welcome CIC!

There were several distinguished guests there, Beth Wood, NC State Auditor, and several members of the Cary Town Council and local government officials.  My good friend and fellow Triangle Ladies Power Lunch member, Shelli Dallacqua, owner of Shelten Media, is one of the current residents of the Cary Innovation Center. Know of a local entrepreneur with a BIG IDEA looking to get started? Send them to the CIC and let their growth begin!

Michelle Muir, Running for Mayor of Cary

Michelle Muir
Carrie, Michelle Muir and Sheila

I honestly believe that being a good community citizen includes being familiar with your local government elected officials.  This happens to be an election year for the Town of Cary and voting day is approaching quickly on Tuesday, October 11th 2011 (10-11-11 for those of you who like crazy-date-numbers).  Over the past few months, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know several of the candidates and finding out more about their platforms and areas of concern/focus for our community.  I’ve attended several panel discussions in which the candidates have voiced their opinions and ideas.  For the first time ever, I really feel like I’ve educated myself for this election decision.  Earlier this week, Blake and I attended a nice event for Michelle Muir, candidate for Mayor of the Town of Cary.  I met Michelle Muir earlier this year and we’ve had a fast-track-friendship develop, but she really feels more like a friend that I’ve known for years!  The event was held at the Guess-White-Ogle House (a historic landmark in Cary) and was co-hosted by Carrie Peele of Blue Diamond Limo and Sheila Ogle of The Matthew’s House in Cary and two other successful businesses

Becca & Blake

We really enjoyed the evening as we mixed with other local citizens and had the opportunity to meet some of the very nice representatives of the PBA (Police Benevolent Association), who have endorsed Michelle Muir as their candidate of choice.  I’d like to thank Carrie and Sheila again for coordinating such a nice event.  I also wanted to mention that Blake is wearing a shirt & tie that we purchased from The Men’s Kloset in Cary…a local consignment store for MEN’S clothing!  Stop by and see them!

Pat and Becca

I was very happy to see my friend, Patricia Gregory of the NCCC (National Cervical Cancer Coalition) at the Michelle Muir event too.  Pat and I met earlier this year and she is a wonderful woman!  Pat always has something exciting going on and I really love catching up with her.  Pat joined the Cary Chamber earlier this year and is using it as a way to reach out to other members and get them involved with her non-profit organization.  Pat and I are brainstorming some ideas for an event/fundraiser that she is planning for next year.  It already sounds great to me!

Eye Opener Breakfast

The Cary Chamber hosted their monthly Eye Opener Breakfast this week (always held the last Wednesday of the month) and this month it took place at the stylish Umstead Hotel.  The breakfast included a panel of several candidates that are up for election in our area.  Here they are below:

Mayor:  Harold Weinbrecht and Michelle Muir

Town Council At-Large:  Zeke Bridges and Lori Bush

District B:  Jeff Foxx and Don Frantz

District D:  Gale Adcock and Don Hyatt

The panel was hosted by Steve Zaytoun and each candidate answered a series of questions that ranged from topics of downtown Cary development to their top three priorities for the Town of Cary.  Each candidate stressed the importance of their platform and encouraged the audience to show up to vote on Election Day, October 11th.   Typically the voter-turnout-rate is 10% for Cary, which is so sad to me.

So where will YOU be on Tuesday October 11th?  Hopefully you know, or at least realize the importance of voting (even in local elections) and you’ll either vote EARLY or you’ll show up at your designated voting station on October 11th to cast your vote.   Take a few minutes before you cast your vote and conduct your own candidate research…vote for a candidate that you feel like will serve our town well. Click HERE for the 2011 Cary Voter Guide.   Michelle Muir is a candidate that is certainly making sure her message is getting out to the voters!
