Rotary Pig Pickin’ & Joining the AENC

Last Saturday, June 3rd 2017, was my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club’s 31st Annual Pig Pickin’ in the Park!  It was a HUGE success, with perfect weather, over 800 people fed delicious BBQ, a record number of sponsorships and the MOST we have ever made on our major fundraising event!  Our final numbers are still pending, but it looks like we are pushing close to $50,000!!!!  This fundraiser supports our college student scholarships as well as our local & global humanitarian projects.  Many thanks to ALL of our great sponsors, especially the ones who sponsored on my behalf: Sharon Lewis Homes, Gilliam & Associates Realty, Second Empire Restaurant, Chick-fil-A Waverly Place, Nirvelli Day Spa, Fit & Able, David Hellinger LPL Financial, Dennis Sargent Law, Randy Walker of Walker Design Build, Elizabeth Asbill of Edward Jones, Jerry Kozel of JTK Mediation, 5Star Awards, Riccobene Family Dentistry, Swift Creek Animal Hospital, Owen Robinson of Keller Williams Realty, Smith Family Dental Solutions, Rally Point Bar & Grill and the Matthews House in Cary.

AENC Membership!

AENC Affiliate Roundtable

Last week I officially joined the AENC, Association Executives of North Carolina.  I have been to several of their events in the past with Rotary and with my good friend, Christine Johnson, who is a member of AENC through her job with FirstPoint Resources.  It is a group I have been interested in for a while and I’m so excited to finally be a member!  I used the remaining funds from my WBON of Cary Scholarship to join!  This morning I attended the Affiliate Roundtable discussion with the topic: “How Do I Get in the Door?”  It was very informative, I took 4 pages of notes from the speakers: Aubie Knight, Linda Stinson and Jim Booth.  I can’t wait for the next event!

Blake & I are off to Atlanta for the 2017 Rotary International Convention!!  It’s our first time going, so we don’t really know what all to expect, but we know it is going to be FUN and AMAZING!  I will be sharing on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube

Tax Class for 2016 and Let’s Party for Christmas!

Tax Class Seminar

Tax Class Seminar

You would probably not think that Tax Classes and Christmas Parties go hand-in-hand, but around here they kind of do.   You see, each year, the CPA’s and accountants in our office have to go through tax classes and earn CPE Credits to keep their license to practice tax.  The guys at Smith & Smith, CPA take a 2-day course in Greensboro that is put on by the Don Farmer Tax Seminar.  Now I know that sounds REALLY exciting and you are jealous that you can’t go!  So all joking aside, it is a really good course, they learn all about the new tax laws and changes and come back with their heads spinning on the new info!  Alicia is also taking her tax classes this week, but she stays close to home and completes her courses in Raleigh.  The guys are out of town in Greensboro for their big seminar.

Life Experiences Christmas Party

Life Experiences with Rotary Friends

Life Experiences with Rotary Friends

Earlier this week we had the Life Experiences Christmas Party.  It really is the BEST party of the year!  I’m proud to serve on the Board at Life Experiences and their Christmas party is a time when all of the clients, staff, Board, and families can come together to share a pot luck meal, meet each other, sing songs, and best of all, open gifts!  They each trade names and bring a special present for each other.  The clients also get a brand new Life Experiences t-shirt, something that they LOVE and truly Cherish.

Full House for the Party

Full House for the Party

Each year, one of the clients gets to dress up as Santa Clause and give out all of the gifts.  Mary Madenspacher, Executive Director for Life Experiences, also takes the microphone around to each one and let’s them say their name, introduce their families and say really whatever they want.  It’s a hoot as you never really know what is going to be said!  We had a great time at the party and I’m so proud to have many of my fellow Rotarians from the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club there with me!  Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet for the beautiful black and white polka-dot dress.

Union Bank Christmas Party

Union Bank also had their Christmas Party this week.  My good friends, Jessica Register and Julie Clark, work for Union Bank and were kind to invite me to their office party.  Union Bank hosted their 2015 Wake County Christmas Open House at their Cary location, 111 Commonwealth Court, and had a huge crowd of clients, friends, Chamber members, Rotarians, and community leaders in attendance.  Jessica and I have been friends for several years now and have been on the Cary Chamber Membership Drive Rewards Trip together for the past 2 years!

Shop Local!

Shop Local!

Jessica and I both LOVE to shop and we LOVE consignment stores because you can find the best deals without having to pay a ton of $$$$.   Don’t we both look holiday-cute!?!  I’m wearing a black and white stripped sweater (it has some shine to it) from My Girlfriend’s Closet (stores in downtown Cary and downtown Apex).  I could have worn it with a black skirt, but I think the red makes it much more festive and styled for the holidays!  Jessica is wearing a black and white sweater too, her’s has some sequence sewn it, is hard to see in the picture, but in person it was very pretty and had a lot of texture and sparkle.  Jessica got her sweater from Classic Clothiers Consignment Boutique in Cary.  Her shoes (cute wedges) were from My Girlfriend’s Closet.  Why shop at the high dollar stores when you can shop local and get great deals!

Bass Pro Santa Shout-Out

And finally, I have to do a Christmas Shout-Out to my work friends…we meet once a month for lunch.  Earlier this week we had our December Christmas Holiday Lunch at Rally Point in Cary.   We have done different Christmas gifts and exchange parties over the years…this year we decided to do a Christmas Wrapping Paper Exchange!   Everyone brought 2 rolls of wrapping paper (or 3 gift bags) and we put them down inside of a black trash bag.  We then drew numbers and took turns grabbing gift wrap out of the bag, OR, you could steal the gift wrap from someone else.  Apparently the Snowman gift wrap is VERY popular among my friends!

All I want for Christmas

After lunch, we went over to Bass Pro Shop in Cary and had our group picture made with Santa Clause.  I mean, how much fun is that !?!?!   I love Bass Pro Shop, even though I don’t hunt and I only fish with my parents.   They have all kinds of cool things in their store!  Plus I got to ride a 4-wheeler out front (well, not really, but I did pretend).  And one final THANKS to My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in this gorgeous Lilly Pulitzer Blayney Ruffle Dress.  The weather has been SO WARM this week,  I knew this colorful dress would be perfect!   Shop at My Girlfriend’s Closet and mention Beccasblog.com to get 10% off your Total Purchase!

ALSO, please remember to VOTE for our Smith & Smith, CPA tree as part of the Town of Cary Gifting Tree Project!!!  Voting goes until Saturday December 19th!  Winners gets $500 to the Charity of their Choice and ours would go to Life Experiences!

C.A.R.T. Fund Week and Shopping for Art Ball Dresses!

C.A.R.T. Fund

CART Week event

CART Week event

Earlier this week my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club was happy to co-host with the Cary Central Rotary Club, a special event in honor of C.A.R.T. Week for the C.A.R.T. Fund.  Just what is the C.A.R.T. Fund you ask?  Well, it stands for Coins for Alzheimer Research Trust.  This was a program started by a Rotarian in SC back in 1995.   He had a family member who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer disease and he wanted to raise funds for innovative research.  cartfund_bucket_logo_lg2So they started putting out BLUE buckets on the tables at their weekly Rotary meeting and asking members to put in their coins and loose change.  The idea of the CART buckets began to spread to other Rotary Clubs and is now being done in over 700 clubs in over 8 different states!  All, meaning 100% of the money donated goes to research and development to find a cure for Alzheimer disease.   So our two clubs teamed up to bring in a guest speaker to talk about the status of the cure for Alzheimer and what you can do to protect yourself.   We also had a speaker who updated us on the CART Fund status and grants that are being given out to research institutions.  Together our two clubs were able to raise $1,400 for the C.A.R.T. Fund!  Thank you to everyone who came and participated!

In the photo above, I’m wearing a very warm and comfortable sweater dress by Ralph Lauren.  I got the dress from My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex.  It’s hard to believe that is has been 3 years already that I have been dressing and marketing for MGC!  I started working with Lois and her team of fantastic girls in August of 2012.  Here we are now in 2015 and I love promoting their store, all their fantastic dresses, sweaters, shoes, accessories and so much more!

Thank you for reading my blog and shopping at their stores in Cary and Apex!   I’ve always been a big fan of helping others in business and taking time to promote each other.  So the Cary Visual Art 19th Annual Art Ball is right around the corner…just 2 weeks from today!   I purchased a dress over the weekend and took it to Lia to get it hemmed.  Lia is a seamstress and her company is called Fleur de Lia Alterations.  She is located in the My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex.  She is great to work with and does fantastic work on any kind of alterations, she’s a master seamstress after all!  If you are looking for a gown to wear to the Art Ball, you should check out the MGC stores in Apex and Cary!  They have a great selection, just see the pictures below!!!!!  I will post a blog next week about great accessories you can get there for your Art Ball (or any upcoming Holiday Dress too!)

Memory Cafe of Cary through Rotary

Memory Cafe of Cary with Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club Friends

Memory Cafe of Cary with Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club Friends

This week the Memory Cafe of Cary celebrated its 1-Year Anniversary.   This is the joint project among the 5 Rotary Clubs in Cary, NC as a way to honor 50 Years of Rotary in Cary (the 50th Celebration was in August 2014).   The Memory Cafe of Cary is held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month  at Bond Park Senior Center and offers a free evening of dinner, entertainment and social interaction with those in our community who have a loved one struggling with Alzheimers disease.  Our attendance has steadily grown over the year and we have really gotten to know and love many of the regular attendees.  The Memory Cafe of Cary is staffed each month by volunteers from the 5 Rotary Clubs, we come together to set-up, serve the meal, interact with the guests and clean-up. It has become a favorite event of mine each month!  We have seen many friendships form between the guests and they even have started to request being able to sit together each month and ask if their friends have arrived yet at check-in.   Check out the video below to watch the live entertainment from our 1-Year Anniversary celebration this week!  They love the music and we are always looking for volunteers to provide the entertainment!

Cary Chamber Rewards Trip 2015

Cary Chamber Rewards Trip 2015

Last week was the Cary Chamber of Commerce Annual Membership Drive Rewards Trip.  This was my 9th year in a row earning a spot on the trip and we had a wonderful time in Cancun, Mexico!  We went to a resort called Secrets Playa Mujeres.  It was beautiful and an all-inclusive resort.  We had 18 traveling in our group and had wonderful weather and a very enjoyable mini-vacation in Mexico!   The trip is awarded each year to those who are the top producers in the Membership Drive.  Many thanks to Lois Cozart, Owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex and MGC Oh-La-La in downtown Cary, for helping me select some beautiful dresses to take along with me to Mexico!  We have a fancy dinner every night while on the trip and Lois had the perfect selection of dresses in her stores for me to choose from!

Last week I also had a chance to have lunch with my dear friend from ShopLocalRaleigh, Kim Davis.   Kim and I have been friends for several years and are always bouncing ideas off each other when it comes to marketing and networking.  We have a new idea in place for a marketing round-table and it is something that we could both really benefit from.  The idea is still a work in progress but stay tuned!  We had lunch at the Red Monkey Tavern at Crabtree Valley Mall.  Thanks again to Lois from My Girlfriend Closet for dressing me in the casual blush colored tank from Ann Taylor!

It’s almost Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carolinas’ PETS for Leadership Training

Leadership Training with Rotary Carolina PETS

leadership training with Rotary Carolina PETS

A few weeks ago I had a wonderful experience attending Rotary Carolinas’ PETS.  The event stands for President Elect Training, where Rotarians from North and South Carolina Rotary Clubs gather together for a leadership training seminar.  Those attending represent; President Elects, President Nominees, District Governors, Assistant District Governors, and other Rotary leaders.  I attended Carolinas’ PETS last year as my club, Cary-Kildaire, President-Nominee and really enjoyed the leadership training classes.  I went on Thursday this year for the two afternoon classes and stayed until Saturday.  The event schedule was very busy and packed with great classes, speakers and networking socials.

RI President Ron Burton 2013-2014

The leadership training was held in Greensboro, NC and the theme for the 2013-2014 Rotary Year is “Engage Rotary Change Lives”.   One of the highlights for me during the whole weekend was to get to meet Ron Burton, Rotary International President 2013-2014 from Norman, Oklahoma.  He spoke at the breakfast on Saturday morning and stayed afterwards to greet Rotarians.  Here is a picture of me with Ron Burton and my good friend Eleni Steadman (Assistant-District Governor for RD 7710, my club’s DG!)  I had a great time too seeing other Rotarian friends from our District and from across the state.

I will be Club President on July 1 and I’m looking forward to a great year with my club!  More pictures below from the Rotary leadership training weekend.

Mike Kunath and Mary Madenspacher

I received a really great email the other day from a local Boy Scout who is working on earning his Eagle Scout award.  It also turns out that his mother has been a professional referral partner with our CPA practice for many years and she suggested that he contact me to see if our Rotary Club, Cary-Kildaire Rotary, could help him with his project.

I have a long family history of scouting so this project really hit close to me.  My wonderful parents were Girl Scout leaders for the troop that my sister, Karen, and I belonged to for many years.   I have some of the best memories of being a Girl Scout and doing cool projects, going neat places and experiencing some really life-changing events as a scout.  I also have an Uncle Mark that was involved with Boy Scouts in Kingsport, TN for many years (our youngest son, Mark, is named after him).  So I was very eager to help this young man with his project.

Mike speaking to our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club

His name is Mike Kunath and he is from Troop 316 here in Apex, NC.  His project involves building a glider (like a rocking chair, except it glides instead of rocking) for the back porch of a local place called Life Experiences that is a non-profit organization located here in Cary, NC.  The fact that Mike is choosing to work with Life Experiences makes this project all the more special to me for several reasons.  Life Experiences just so happens to be an organization that our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club has been supporting for a long time.  Our Club also sponsored and helped build the back patio at Life Experiences and Mike plans to have his glider sit back there.  The newest member in our Club, Mary Madenspacher, is the Executive Director for Life Experiences, so you can see that this project was just perfectly timed!

So, Mike came a few weeks ago to meet our Club members and do a short introduction about his project and the plans he has made to make it happen.  We are proud to report that our Club will in fact help him make this project a reality through a financial gift.  We’ve also volunteered some man-hours and tools for the construction process. We are really proud of Mike and we look forward to helping him achieve the much desired and highly honored award of being an Eagle Scout.  Mike is hoping to have the glider completed by early August, I’ll be sure to update the status along the way.  I’ve also included a picture of my Uncle Mark and my Little Mark.  🙂

Uncle Mark and ‘little’ Mark

Always have a willing heart and an open hand to help those in need!
