Watkins Flowers for ShopLocalRaleigh

ShopLocalRaleigh

ShopLocalRaleigh

This morning was the October Final Friday ShopLocalRaleigh morning social. The event was held at Watkins Flowers of Distinction in Raleigh on Capital Blvd.  The store is already beautifully decorated for the holiday seasons and boasts tons of cool holiday decor, plus flowers of all kinds and styles!  The owners, Ed Carpp and his wife, Sallie Taggart, were gracious hosts and had fresh coffee and donuts for us.  The Friday Morning Social is a FAVORITE among many in ShopLocalRaleigh and gives a SLR member an opportunity to host the event at their place of business.

Winner!

Winner!

During the social, we all get a chance to go around and introduce ourselves and meet all of the other members and guests.  There was a HUGE crowd this morning and many members had exciting announcements about holiday promotions and events.  Watkins Flowers did a door prize drawing for a gift basket that was full of items from LOCAL stores and vendors, many of which are members of ShopLocalRaleighScott Sams of Dynamic Print Solutions was the lucky winner!  One of my favorite items in the basket is the popcorn from Carolina Popcorn ShoppeJennifer Martin, Executive Director for ShopLocalRaleigh, handed out the Sir Walter Raleigh cut-outs as it is ONCE AGAIN time for the “Where’s Walter” Holiday ContestSmith & Smith, CPA participated in this event last year and it was so much fun!

Where's Walter Contest

Where’s Walter Contest

The Where’s Walter contest involves local businesses putting the cut-out of Sir Walter in their place of business (or on their website) and inviting other SLR members & the public to snap pictures of Sir Walter and then post them to Twitter and Instagram.  Each post gets you an entry for all of the great prizes!  Last year the GRAND PRIZE was a SCOOTER and one of our Smith & Smith, CPA clients, Kate Steadman, Co-Owner of FRILL, was the lucky winner!  The contest will start in a few weeks, so make sure you stop by Smith & Smith, CPA to see our Sir Walter and enter the contest!  Thanks again to Watkins Flowers for hosting the October ShopLocalRaleigh Final Friday Morning Social and to everyone who came!  Thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me today in the purple tunic!  My Girlfriend’s Closet is located in downtown Cary and downtown Apex….keep it local, Shop Local!  Happy weekend!

Auto Expense and Women’s Networking Groups

Holly & Becca with WBON of Cary

Holly & Becca with WBON of Cary

Yesterday I attended the WBON of Cary Fall Mega Women’s Networking event, held at Bien Venue in Apex, NC.  For several years now WBON (Women Business Owners Network) has been doing a contest during the Mega Networking events for the most original, funniest, and best overall 30-second commercials.  This is an engaging way to get everyone to be creative and to think ‘out of the box’ with their personal business introductions.  There were some really great ones this time and several of the ladies had even brought props, some rapped songs, and some just made us laugh so hard!  I try to mix up my message each time (after all, how exciting are taxes & accounting?) so this time I bought a pink steering wheel cover and ‘drove’ around the room while talking about the oh-so-popular-tax-client-question of “auto use & miles & car expenses” on taxes.  Believe it or not that earned me the MOST ORIGINAL award in the 30-Second Contest!  Check out this picture of my friend Holly Beerman, we met at the Spring Mega Women’s Networking and have become fast friends!

mgc ohlala 2   Holly and her husband, Luke, own Beerman Construction and Holly also keeps a blog!  Thanks to Lois Cozart, owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet and Oh La La, also a member of WBON of Cary, for dressing me in the White House Black Market dress, it was so comfortable and got tons of compliments!  Be sure to visit Lois and her amazing staff at their THREE, yes i said THREE, stores in Apex & Cary!  Tell them you read about them in Beccasblog.com and get 10% of your purchase!

A Lesson in Self-Esteem and Rising Above!

Gina, Sandra and Becca

Gina, Sandra and Becca

Today was the first meeting for the WBON of Cary 2014-2015 Year (Women Business Owner Network).  I’ve been a member of this ladies networking group for many years and the first meeting of the calendar year always set the tone for the rest of the year to come.  After hearing the speaker, Sandra Dubose, I can HONESTLY say that WBON of Cary is going to have a GREAT year!  Sandra Dubose was the 2011 Mrs. Black North Carolina (she actually made history for being the 1st BALD beauty queen of NC) and she’s got a way of speaking and engaging the audience that just makes you want to hold on and listen for hours!  She spoke about “Women & Self-Esteem” and how we have to take lessons from life and keeping rising above.

MGC Oh La La

MGC Oh La La

She encouraged us to “Identify with what you want your life to look like” and also to “Own our power” because self-esteem impacts every part of our life.  I really enjoyed hearing her speak about her life stories and the way she has overcome so much.  I even bought her book, “My Crown and Glory, It’s Not About the Hair” and I’m excited to get started with it this week!  WBON of Cary is a local ladies networking group for women business owners and professional working womenSmith & Smith, CPA has been a part of this group for nearly 9 years and we’ve developed many friends, clients, and referral partners.

wbon of cary I am looking forward to the programs, speakers, and events that WBON of Cary has planned for the year!  I enjoyed sitting with Gina Gilliam of Gilliam & Associates Realty, LLC.  Gina is super fun and we were BOTH wearing dresses from My Girlfriend’s Closet (thanks to owner, Lois Cozart).  They have their Cary Chamber Ribbon Cutting for their 3rd STORE, MGC Ooh La La tomorrow evening at 5:00PM, come join us if you can!

ShopLocalRaleigh Boutique Blowout Lucky Card Winner

Lucky Card Winner! Contact me if you have this Card in your bag!

Lucky Card Winner!

Last Friday, August 8th, was the ShopLocalRaleigh Boutique Blowout!  The awesome event was held at Cobblestone Hall City Market in downtown Raleigh and featured over 20 locally owned and operated boutiques, crafters, spas and specialty shops all under one roof!  It was a really neat way to highlight local stores, plus they had incredible deals on their end-of-summer merchandise and excess inventory!  Many of the shops & vendors had their items marked as low as $5 and discounts as deep as 75% off!  This was a good opportunity for them to move merchandise and get their stores ready for Fall and Winter items.  The Boutique Blowout Sale started at 5:00PM but VIP members were allowed to get in at 4:30PM for 30 minutes of early shopping time.  VIP attendees also received a reusable shopping tote full of coupons and promotional items from local business owners and sponsors.

VIP members also go an armband to enjoy a cocktail for the ultimate Sip and Shop experience provided by www.iheartretail.com!  I thought this was a great chance for Smith & Smith, CPA to support the “Shop Local” movement and as a member of ShopLocalRaleigh we were excited to be a Sponsor for the event.  Other sponsors included: Galatea Boutique, Yelp, LiveWorkPlay.com, Midtown Magazine, IHeartRetail.com, Southern Bride & Groom, G105 B939 Country 95x, The Junction Salon Bar, Adara Spa, and Troy Mezze Lounge.

Jennifer and Chris of SLR

As a sponsor for the ShopLocalRaleigh Boutique Blowout, I had the opportunity to provide a goody for the tote bags (250 items were needed!)  so I decided to do a treat-bag with candy, gold coins and a LUCKY card from a deck of cards.  I put a label on the front of the goody bag encouraging attendees to check the blog today to see if their card was the LUCKY card.…thus winning a Smith & Smith, CPA tailgate chair and cooler.

I drew a card this morning from a full deck of 52 cards and the WINNING LUCKY CARD is the 10 of Hearts!!!  So if your Boutique Blowout Bag had a 10 of Hearts in the goody bag from Smith & Smith, CPA, PLEASE contact me by email (info@smithandsmithcpa.com) or phone (919) 380-0600 and I’ll collect your card and give you your prizes!  Alicia went with me to work our Smith & Smith, CPA booth, we were right near the front entrance and we enjoyed greeting all of the shoppers as they arrived and invited them to take a spin on our winning wheel.

We were offering prizes to those who landed on the Ace, King, Queen and Jack of Spades.  We had a lot of participation and gave away several prizes!  I also had ‘$5 Girlfriend Bucks’ coupons from My Girlfriend’s Closet Consignment Boutique that I gave out to those who stopped to spin wheel.  Thanks to Lois Cozart, owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary and downtown Apex for providing me with the ‘Girlfriend Bucks’!   Thanks to everyone who stopped by.  I did a bit of shopping myself (Alicia and I took turns with our booth) and I was able to find some great deals on some presents for the rest of the year!  Plus I enjoyed talking to all of the store owners and getting their feedback from the event (it was all positive).  Our Boutique Blowout sponsorship also included 4 VIP tickets I had invited some of our Smith & Smith, CPA referral partners & clients to attend.  They all had a great time and loaded up on lots of amazing deals!  The attendance was very steady during the opening hours and lasted till doors closes at 9:00PM.

Cary Chamber to Jamaica!

Cary Chamber Membership Drive Trip Travel Team 2014

Cary Chamber Membership Drive Trip Travel Team 2014

Every year the Cary Chamber of Commerce holds their Annual Membership Drive, running from mid-February to early June.  During this time, they rely on volunteers of the Cary Chamber membership to help recruit for new members and sponsors for the upcoming chamber year.  It is always a fun and energizing time as small, medium and large businesses from all over the Cary community (and beyond) become members and start sending their employees to the Cary Chamber business networking and social events!  For the past 2 years I’ve had the pleasure of serving the Cary Chamber as the Vice Chair for Member Business Services and leading the Membership Drive.

Bikini Bus of the Cary Chamber

Bikini Bus of the Cary Chamber

This year we had a successful time of bringing in over 150 new members!  As a reward for those who worked hard and went above and beyond to get at least 10 new members, they were rewarded with an all-expense paid trip for 2 to the lovely island of Jamaica!  So on this past Saturday, 16 people from the Cary Chamber traveled to the Secrets St. James Montego Bay Jamaica resort.  This was the 8th year in a row for Blake and I to attend and we are always proud to go and represent Smith & Smith, CPA as a dedicated Cary Chamber member!  We were in Jamaica for 4 days and enjoyed just relaxing and having ethnic dinners at different restaurants around the resort.  The others who attended the trip included: (the 4 top winners) Tia Coppus of Bank of NC, Leann Schrick of Bank of NC, Jessica Register of Union Bank and Alison Guthrie of Aflac.  Chamber staff on the trip included: VP- Delancy Caroll, Membership Director- Patty McEwen and 2013-2014 Board of Directors Chairman Frank Shell of NewBridge Bank.

Many thanks to Elaine Smith of E-Destinations for organizing the trip and travel arrangements.  Jessica and I were proud to wear new swimsuits that we had purchased this summer from the Bikini Bus (a new Cary Chamber member!).   Also many thanks to Lois Cozart, Owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary and downtown Apex (also a Cary Chamber member) for sending me on the trip with several cute dresses to wear for the evening dinners & events while in Jamaica!  Participating in the Cary Chamber Membership Drive each year is an excellent way to network and grow your business by getting out there and meeting the business owners in the Cary Community.  Get involved!  It will make a difference in all you do!

Noodle Bar in Raleigh with ShopLocalRaleigh and Bloggers!

Torii Noodle Bar by Kanki

Torii Noodle Bar by Kanki

So last night I had a pretty cool experience, I was invited by Jennifer Martin, Executive Director for ShopLocalRaleigh to join in on the SLR Food & Travel Bloggers event at Torri Noodle Bar by Kanki.  Now, noodle bars are one of the hottest food trends in 2014, so I had to go and check this place out!  Jennifer knows that I’m an avid blogger and not only is Beccablog.com about our Smith & Smith, CPA clients and helpful tax/accounting advice, but I also LOVE to blog about events and happenings within our networking groups, such as ShopLocalRaleigh.

Delicious Appetizers by Torii Noodle Bar

Delicious Appetizers by Torii

I’ve also been adding some reviews to TripAdvisor and UrbanSpoon here lately too, so it all ties in together nicely.  This was my first time at a noodle bar, though my husband and I are fans of the roman noodles that you can make it home, so I had to go and compare the two!  Torii Noodle Bar is located at Crabtree Valley Mall on the top level, right down from Kanki.  It is owned by the Kanki family and has both indoor and outdoor seating.  It is not a large space, seats 40 people inside and has large glass windows that provide lots of natural light.

The noodle bar was closed for just our group and upon arrival they offered you a drink and some delicious appetizers (edamame, Gyoza, calamari, and tataki).  The room was set-up in a ‘cooking teaching style‘ and I couldn’t wait to get started!   Those who know me know that I would rather do the dishes and clean-up after a meal ANY DAY instead of being the chef, but I was looking forward to this experience.  Everyone at Torii was very nice and I had the pleasure of meeting Chef Alex Cordova, Executive Chef for Torii (he taught the noodle making class), Tom MukoyamaCorporate GM and Certified Sake Adviser, Reuben RodillasGM Torii Noodle Bar at Kanki, and Gee DararouksaDirector of Operations for Plaza Associates.

Let's Make some Ramen!

Let’s Make some Ramen! This is what we started with

Once everyone had arrived we gathered around the table and Tom gave us a quick overview of Torii and introduced Chef Alex.  Chef Alex talked a little bit about the history of the ramen noodle and what the basic ingredients are (wheat flour, salt, water and kansui).   Now the fun began!  We were each given a plate of 4 small sauce bowls and we were invited to sip and try the difference sauces and then decide which one we wanted for our final noodle bowl.  All of their noodle bar sauces are made in-house and some even take up to 6-hours to make!

Mixing it all up!

Mixing it all up!

I went with the first flavor which was a shoyu broth, a soy-based broth and the most common style, a specialty of Tokyo.  Next we stared making our own noodles!  Starting with our bread flour, we mixed, rolled, and stretched and flattened the dough through the pasta noodle maker machine.  This was really fun as we laughed and talked and took turns sharing the noodle machines.  After about 20 minutes we ended up each having a plate of noodles for dinner and a bag of noodles to-go home with us.

Rolling out the noodles

Rolling out the noodles

The servers came around and took your fresh made noodles along with your name and choice of sauce.  After a few minutes your noodle bowl came out and you went down the ‘noodle bar topping‘ line and added different items as you wished (pork, soft egg, scallions, tofu, fish cake, and snow peas).  It was so fun to see all of the different combinations that everyone had made as it really does represent how Torri Noodle Bar caters to each individual particular taste and flavor, I just loved the idea of creating your own noodle bar bowl!

My noodle bowl included: noodles, shoyu broth, fresh egg, pork, scallions, and snow peas.YUMMY!!!!

Finished meal ready to eat!

Finished meal ready to eat!

During the whole cooking course we also were treated with tastings of many different sake flavors!  I can’t even remember how many we tasted but they were all different: sweet, hot, cold, strong, etc.  Really good!  My favorite one tasted like spiced apples!  After we all ate dinner together, they thanked us for attending and we were each presented with a “Certificate of Participation in the Making of Ramen Noodles” and a bright green recycled bag full of coupons, special offers to Torri and Kanki, recipes, notepads and more.

Let's eat!

Let’s eat!

Torii Noodle Bar is a great location for many events…there is plenty of parking and the space is perfect for hosting private events such as baby showers, bridal showers, birthday parties, office parties, family events, and more. The staff will work with you to help create the best set-up and menu for your event.  They also offer a variety of classes each month at Torii, such as Sake & Sushi 101 and Noodle Making.  The classes are $35/per person and they can be found on the website.   I really like how ShopLocalRaleigh reaches out to community bloggers and locally owned restaurants and works to connect them together.  This event was really well done and lasted about 2-hours.

I’d like to say thank you to Jennifer Martin of SLR and all of the staff at Torii and Kanki for such a fun night!  There was also a film crew there taking pictures and making videos to use for Torii, so I am sure they got some great footage!   So overall my first experience at a noodle bar was really awesome and I’m already thinking of an event I can have there soon with friends!  And a very special thanks to Lois Cozart, Owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet, a high-end ladies consignment boutique with two locations, located in downtown Cary and downtown Apex, for dressing me in this beautiful blue and white silk polka-dotted sleeveless top from The Limited.  I paired it with while linen pants and it made for a crisp and cool hot July summer day outfit!  They still have tons of great summer dresses and tops, plus fantastic accessories!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com and get 10% off your total purchase!

Bulls Game with Bank of NC

I don’t know about where you live, but the weather around here this past weekend was NOTHING short of AMAZING!

Durham Bulls Game

Durham Bulls Game

Friday was overcast and a little cool, but made for a PERFECT night to watch some baseball!  Our family had the pleasure of being invited to attend the Durham Bulls game on Friday night for Customer Appreciation Night with Bank of NC.  Smith & Smith, CPA has a very strong relationship with Bank of NC and we were honored to be invited to join them for a night of baseball and more!  Tia Coppus, Treasury Services, for Bank of NC invited us along and seriously it was one of the best nights out at the American Tobacco Campus in Durham.

Bank of NC friends and clients

Bank of NC friends and clients

Bank of NC was hosting their event on the Party Deck and it was full of clients, friends, referral partners and families who all support the banks employees and staff.  Blake and I met Tia and her husband, Ethan, back in late summer of 2013 on the Cary Chamber Membership Drive Rewards Trip (Mexico!) and we’ve been good friends ever since.  The relationship has worked out well too business-wise as CPA firms and bankers can often refer clients back and forth.

Alisha and Tia of Bank of NC

Alisha and Tia of Bank of NC

In our ‘traditional Smith Family Style’ we took along EVERYONE and all of the kids (cousins) were excited to be together.  The Party Deck at Durham Bulls offers catered food (super yummy) with all kinds of good ‘ballpark food and drinks’, plus table seating and stadium seating for watching the game, and it is located right behind 3rd base.  We all enjoyed meeting others at the party and Tia was a very gracious hostess.  The kids loved watching the game and we took them over to the Wool E. Bull (mascot for the Durham Bulls) play area in the 7th Inning to let them run wild and play in the play center.  bulls 4The Durham Bulls gave a good fight in the game but ended up losing my 1 run!  The evening ended with one of the BEST firework displays ever!  Many thanks to Tia and the entire group at Bank of NC for hosting such a fun night and for including us!  Did you notice Blake being supportive wearing his Bank of NC shirt???? He’s a great supporter of Bank of NC!  And check out my gold Tory Burch top from My Girlfriend’s Closet…thanks Lois Cozart for always picking such great things for me to wear from your store!  Check them out in downtown Cary and downtown Apex…ladies consignment, plus tons of accessories!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com and get 10% off your purchase!

Shopping Local and Supporting Local!

ShopLocalRaleigh Final Friday Social

ShopLocalRaleigh Final Friday Social

Last Friday I attended the ShopLocalRaleigh Final Friday Social that was hosted in downtown Raleigh at a children’s boutique store called Nuvonivo.  I LOVE the Final Friday Socials and always enjoy meeting other members of ShopLocalRaleigh and getting to visit their stores.  A son and mother team owns the store and they were so nice and very gracious to be able to host for the month of April.

With Kim Davis in ShopLocalRaleigh

They are doing a clothing drive for the nonprofit group, Note in the Pocket and were collecting gently used children’s garments in exchange for NuvoBUCKS!!!  If you donated 1 jacket or 3 garments you were eligible to receive a $5 voucher (up to a $25 limit).  Well, with 2 boys at home, I ALWAYS have coats & jackets that are ready to be passed on to other kids, so I took two huge bags of clothing for the donation drive.  I also LOVE Note in the Pocket, I met them a few years ago at the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch and have been involved with them through my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club too.

Note in the Pocket clothing drive

Their Executive Director, Dallas, was at the Final Friday Social and shared their mission along with some of their upcoming events (Socks & Undie 5kRundie on Saturday May 10th).  The clothing drive is going to last until May 10th, make your donations at their store location (111 E. Hargett Street Raleigh NC).  I had a great time at the social and was happy to have my friend, Tia Coppus, of Bank of NC there for her first time with ShopLocalRaleigh.  After the social, I used my nuvoBUCKS to get a baby present for a family member, what a great store!  I am already looking forward to the ShopLocalRaleigh Final Friday Social at the end of May! ShopLocalRaleigh was also hosting a MAJOR event on Saturday…Brewgaloo (a local beer fest in downtown Raleigh that features local breweries and local food vendors/food trucks).  With the weather as nice as it was over the weekend…I am SURE Brewgaloo was a huge success!

After the social, Tia and I went over to the Southern Women’s Show at the NC State Fairgrounds.  I went to the show last year with Kim Davis and had a great time seeing friends and a few clients from Smith & Smith, CPA (The Cookie People had a VERY yummy display!)  The Southern Women’s Show comes once a year to this area and it’s a fun time with lots going on!  I made a few fun purchases and always enjoy seeing what’s ‘new’ on the market.  The event was FULL and lasted all weekend, so I am sure it was just as busy on Saturday and Sunday!

A Time to Celebrate a Job Well Done!

Smith & Smith, CPA at Angus Barn

Smith & Smith, CPA at Angus Barn

Well…that special day of April 15th has now come and gone!  2013 Tax Returns and Extensions have been filed and the hours are completed…but is all the work done and the party over!?! NO WAY! We have still have lots to get completed, but that will all get done soon enough.  Thanks so much to all of our clients for their support and help during the final few days before April 15th.  We were certainly not forgotten as we had lots of sweet treats, gift cards, coffee and Energy Drinks brought in to get us through!  Thanks to everyone!

Dessert anyone?

Dessert anyone?

A few years ago we started celebrating the end of Tax Season with a big office & family Tax Celebration Dinner.  It’s a dinner that we all look forward to and have marked on our calendars as soon as tax season starts!  This year we carried on the tradition by going to The Angus Barn in Raleigh.  We love going there, the whole atmosphere is just wonderful and the food, service and experience is certainly worthy of a celebration!  We’ve been celebrating at the Angus Barn for the past few years and the experience just keeps getting better and better.  Our server last night, Chris, happened to be a long time friend of ours and had worked at Red Lobster in Greenville years ago when Blake and I were working there too.  We always arrive early to enjoy the fresh appetizers and to visit the Wild Turkey Lounge.  Van Eure came by the table to say hello, Van is the current owner of the Angus Barn (her father started it years ago) and was a friend/mentor to me during my years at ECU.

It’s always great to see her and she really knows how to make guests feel welcomed!  After dinner and dessert we stopped by the Angus Barn store to purchase a few favorite gifts and also picked up a gift card for our office postman who will be retiring in a few weeks (Angus Barn is his favorite place too!).   It was a very nice evening and we enjoyed our Tax Celebration dinner and it was nice to have Brooke Smith (Cam’s wife) and John Spey (Alicia’s husband) with us to celebrate too.

Thanks to Lois Cozart, Owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex and downtown Cary for picking the lovely orange and blue strapless dress for me to wear to the Angus Barn.  I’m so honored to wear clothing from My Girlfriend’s Closet and love all that they have to offer both to consigners and shoppers!  Lois and her staff have set-up a very special room in their downtown Apex store that is strictly for prom & formal wear events.  Perfect timing for all of the local high school proms!  They have a large selection of gowns in all sizes and styles…and their prices are great too!  Why pay top dollar for a gown that you will probably only wear onetime anyway when you can get a beautiful gown for a better price at My Girlfriend’s Closet!!?!?!  Tell them you read about My Girlfriend’s Closet in Beccasblog.com and get 10% off your total purchase!
