Cary Chamber Small Business Excellence Awards 2014

I have to sing out a BIG CONGRATS for a VERY SPECIAL place in Cary!  CONGRATS TO LIFE EXPERIENCES!!!!!

Mary and Becca, Charitable Partner Award

Mary and Becca, Charitable Partner Award

Yesterday was the 2014 Small Business Excellence Awards for the Cary Chamber of Commerce.  I look forward to this event each year as it honors the small businesses in the Cary area.  Small businesses are still the backbone of the economy and it’s a day to really recognize those who are working hard and growing successful companies, despite the day-to-day challenges they face.  I was so honored to be included in the awards ceremony and as a member of the Cary Chamber Board of Directors serving as Vice Chair for Membership Services, I was asked to present three awards; Community Service, Employer of the Year and Charitable Partner. The small business awards luncheon was held at Embassy Suites and had over 160+ people in attendance.  The event was sponsored by NewBridge Bank and featured 7 different awards.

Holiday Cheer for All!

Kevin & Shelli Christmas Party 2013

Kevin & Shelli Christmas Party 2013

Last night Blake and I attended a really fun Christmas Party at the lovely Matthews House in downtown Cary.  The party was hosted by Kevin and Shelli Dallacqua.   Shelli is the Founder & President of Shelten Media, a full-service social media marketing company.  Kevin is the owner of a local car & auto body shop.  I met Shelli a few years ago through the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch and we’ve been friends ever since.  This was the first year for this Christmas party and we loved being included.

Funny Christmas photo fun

Shelli had lots of fun things going on in the room, from a 50/50 raffle (winner got half the money that ended up being $185!!) plus raffle tickets for over 15 auction items!  There was a full buffet for a sit-down dinner, plus a fun area of crazy Christmas/holiday photo props.  I had some fun picture taken with my friend Tammy Cordes and her hubby, Craig.  Blake and I bought several raffle tickets but ended the night not being a lucky winner, which we were okay with…but I really wanted those earrings that were donated by Kim Oestereich Smith & Smith, CPA donated one of our tailgate chairs and coolers.  There was even a 5 day cruise on the raffle table!  Our friend Suzy Saver and her hubby won the cruise!

It was fun to see so many wonderful friends, networking partners, business leaders and community supporters all together!  Shelli and Kevin were very gracious hosts and took time to greet everyone and kept the party moving.  Beth Wood, NC State Auditor, gave the invocation before dinner.  The food was really delicious, the Matthews House has a fabulous chef!!!  There was a huge dessert buffet and also a wine bar.  After dinner, Shelli introduced all of her staff and interns.

She then took time to share her story of going to NCSU as a non-traditional student, being selected for an internship at Oxford, winning scholarships to attend, becoming introduced & exposed to social media while in Europe, coming back to USA and traveling across country working on a projects, and best of all, she shared about the encouragement and support she got along the way from one of her college professors.  She ended up giving him an award titled the “Shelten Media #WorldChanger Award”.   Our friends Heather and Dave Sefried ended up winning the 50/50 raffle at the end of the night (yea!!!).

The best part of the whole evening was the military family that was selected and being showered with Christmas presents that were brought by all of the guests.  Shelli had found this family through our friend Kathleen Volandt, President of Auroros. That was such a special part of the party to see all of the presents around the Christmas tree.  Shelli and Kevin gave each attendee two bottles of wine at the end of the night that had custom labels on them from Chatham Hill Winery.  Thanks again to Shelli and Kevin for being such gracious hosts and kind friends to all of us.  We enjoyed the night so much!  Thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriends Closet for the beautiful black cocktail dress that I wore for the evening.  My Girlfriend’s Closet has a great selection of Holiday cocktail dresses and beautiful accessories!  Stop by there to shop and tell them that you read Beccasblog.com and get a 10% off discount on your next purchase.

Awards to the Community

2013 Cary Community Foundation Grant Awards Breakfast

2013 Cary Community Foundation Grant Awards Breakfast

Last Friday I attended the Cary Community Foundation 2013 Grants Awards Breakfast at the lovely Matthews House in downtown Cary.  The Matthews House is a client of Smith & Smith, CPA, and a very beautiful place for events of all kinds!   I joined the Cary Community Foundation Board earlier this year and it has been a fun opportunity and I’ve met some wonderful community leaders.  I helped serve on the Grants Committee this year and we had over 25 grant applications to read through and compare.  It was so hard…I wanted to give them ALL grant money!  I had tears in my eyes as I read through the grant applications.  We had $7,000 to give out to all of these worthy organizations.

The grant awards were divided into different categories, which made it much easier to judge.  The Cary Community Foundation President, Carla Liberatore, hosted the Grants Awards Breakfast and opened the morning with a welcome.  Sheila Ogle of the Matthews House offered the invocation and then breakfast was served buffet style (and it was sooo yummy and healthy!)  Vice President, Laird Hepburn, gave out all of the grant checks and asked each recipient to speak briefly about their organization and how the money would be used to benefit the good of those in the Cary Community.  Once again, some of the stories that the grant recipients shared really brought tears to your eyes.  It is so rewarding to know that the money is being put to good use for those who really need an extra hand in life.  One of my favorite non-profits, The Corral, was the recipient of grant money that will be used towards after school educational supplies for the girls at The Corral.

Another one of my favorite grant awards was given to Hospice of Wake County for a signature piece of art that will be put in the bereavement garden and will be focused on children and their healing needs.  The morning event was very special and I think everyone left the breakfast feeling blessed and uplifted.   Congrats to all of the grant award recipients!   I enjoyed seeing lots of friends and also would like to thank, Liz Cantino from VantageSouth Bank for joining me as my guest.

WBON Mega Networking Time!

Winners!

Winners!

Earlier this week on Wednesday, WBON of Cary held their Annual Fall Mega Networking Event.  This year the event was held at the beautiful Matthews House in downtown Cary.   The Matthews House is a client of Smith & Smith, CPA, so I always enjoy going there for events!  Sheila Ogle, owner of The Matthews House, was very gracious to have WBON there for our Mega Networking and she even joined us for lunch.  The room was full of ladies and we enjoyed lunch and open networking before the meeting.

WBON Friends

President Christine started the meeting, welcomed all of the new guests, and invited all of the new members up front to introduce them to the group.  Lots of new members this month, YEA!  There was a really funny announcement made about the Murder & Mayhem event that is going to be held on November 20th called “Killing for the Crown”.  This will be the WBON Scholarship Fundraiser this year (instead of an auction as done in the years past).  It sounds like it is going to be lots of fun and I can’t wait to go!

Full room at The Matthews House

Full room at The Matthews House

The whole focus for the Mega Networking event it to get to meet and talk to as many ladies possible in the room.  WBON has done this many different ways over the years.  This year, we decided to give everyone a chance to stand and speak for 30 seconds.  That’s right…just 30!  And it goes fast, so you need to be prepared and ready to go!  We added a twist to make it more fun and had three WBON members serve as judges for the “Most Creative, Most Unique and Most Memorable”.  Fun stuff right!?!  I prepared mine the day before and even took a short trip over to Party City to pick up a few supplies for my 30-seconds about Smith & Smith, CPA.

Lock it up!

Lock it up!

I could tell a few other of my friends had also prepared in advance as they also had some cool props!  I loved hearing all of the ladies speak and tell their stories.  Some were really funny, a few ladies were nervous, but that is expected if you are not used to speaking to a crowd.  But it is all for fun and for the sake of new business connections and support!  In the end, Cindy Prince won for Most Unique; Dr. Heather Sefried won for Most Creative; and yours truly, Becca Smith, won for Most Memorable!  YEA!  I took a big gold crown and called myself the “Queen of Numbers”…I had a large wand with a $ on the end and set of handcuffs warning ladies to keep up with their numbers so they can stay out of jail.  Funny, unique, a little crazy and yes…Memorable!  I got one of the new WBON logo coffee mugs as a prize.  Kudos to all of the other winners and to the WBON Board for their hard work with this event.  Well Done!
And thanks to Lois Cozart, owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet, for dressing me in this lovely and really unique dress by Boston Proper!

Cooking with Elise and Supporting the Community!

Friends with Chef Elise

Last week got away from me (BIG TIME), so I am a few days behind with blogs, but hey, I’ll make it up this week!  Great stories and events coming your way, STAY TUNED!  So let’s start with the first with last Tuesday at the VERY FIRSTCooking Live with Chef Elise”.  This event was held at the lovely Matthew’s House in downtown Cary and featured Chef Elise cooking three different holiday appetizers and benefited Dorcas Ministries.

Matthew’s House

Now this concept is ‘new’ and really neat…you pay $15 and you get to attend a very nice event where Chef Elise is being taped while cooking up some delicious items, network and socialize with local citizens, all while supporting a local nonprofit agency!  What a great idea!  I attended with Alicia Angell (our newest member at Smith & Smith, CPA) and we had a great time!  I’m a big fan of Dorcas Ministries, I’ve been friends with Howard Manning (Executive Director) and Deidre Jersey (Capital Campaign Coordinator) for many years and I love supporting/shopping at Dorcas!

Alicia showing off the food

I’m also a HUGE fan of the Matthew’s House (client for Smith & Smith, CPA) and always being able to go their property for events.  Everyone who attended was asked to bring a non-perishable food item to help stock the pantry for clients in need of Dorcas Ministries.  It was so cool to see how much food was being donated!  Chef Elise was a huge delight to watch!  She laughed, made jokes, told stories, introduced her family and friends and of course…COOKED!  You could tell she was having a blast up there!  The event was completely SOLD OUT and they even had to turn people away!  This will become a monthly event and will only continue to get better and better! Do you want to know what Chef Elise cooked live for us?? (We got to sample the food and had a nice glass of wine too!)  The first item she cooked was a carrot-marbleized appetizer!

Cooking with Chef Elise

The Food Network had asked her to prepare an appetizer using carrots and that is what she came up with! It was served on a nice slice of Brie cheese and was soooooo good!  Her second item was quiche with asparagus (YUM) and the final menu item she whipped up was roasted red pepper hummus with a falafel!  There was a live band that added a lot of entertainment to whole night.  My favorite thing that Chef Elise said was “Most women want diamonds…but not me.  I tell my husband I want small kitchen appliances instead of diamonds!”

There was a short video clip that played and told about Dorcas Ministries and their mission.  I can see this event growing bigger and bigger and will be a monthly regular for my calendar!  Hope to see you there in January 2013!  And many thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet boutique for the lovely deep purple Rebecca Taylor embellished silk top that I wore!  Lois Cozart, owner of My Gilfriend’s Closet in Apex and Cary, really knows how to pick the best clothing for women!

Hunger Games with Dakota Hood and More!

This past weekend was very exciting!  We were invited to a private screening of the new blockbuster hit movie, Hunger Games

Hunger Games with Dakota Hood

One of our client’s daughters, Dakota Hood, was featured in the movie!  Dakota was cast in the role as Tribute Girl from District 10.  Dakota’s mom and dad (Rock and Lisa Hood) had been by the office a few weeks earlier and were so excited to share the news with us of Dakota being part of the Hunger Games!  We’ve known the Hood family for many years and both of their kids, Dalton (older brother) and Dakota are sooooooooooooooo talented!  Dalton has been all over and around New York in Broadway and theater plays.  Dakota has a killer singing voice and has been in a fair share of theatrical productions too.  So on Sunday, March 25th, 2012, all of us from Smith & Smith, CPA ventured to north Raleigh to see the Hunger Games with Dakota Hood!  The theater was packed and we were all given cool lanyards with Dakota’s picture as District 10 Tribute on the front as our movie pass.  Sharon and I had both previously read the first book (it’s a trilogy) and I had filled Blake in on the plot earlier in the week.  The movie was really good, certainly not for children, and I thought it was true to the book.  Dakota was so happy to have so many friends and family members there to support her and cheer her on!  Every time she came on the screen the theater would erupt with applause and cheers!  I got her to autograph a few things after the show.  Now I can say I have the autograph of Dakota Hood from the Hunger Games!!  This is just the beginning of many more great things to come for Dakota!  And a BIG THANK YOU to Rock and Lisa Hood for inviting us to attend!  We do love this family!

Shelli and Kevin Dallacqua

I also had the pleasure of attending a BEAUTIFUL wedding at the lovely Matthew’s House in downtown Cary.  My friend Shelli Mayfield married her fiancé, Kevin Dallacqua.  This was my first wedding at the Matthew’s House (though I’ve attended numerous events there over the years) and it was so beautiful and eloquently decorated.  I know Shelli had wanted to have the wedding outside, but the weekend was full of thunderstorms and rain, so they moved the ceremony to the indoor banquet room.  Shelli was a very beautiful bride and Kevin was a handsome groom!

Friends at the wedding

Many friends from the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch were present at the wedding.  I spoke with several ladies during the cocktail hour that was held on the breezeway in-between the historic house and the banquet room.  I love how they had a signature frame for guests to sign as they arrived as they make the best keepsakes!  A nice buffet dinner and dance followed the cocktail hour and wedding ceremony.  So congrats again to Shelli and Kevin!

So despite the rain and yucky thunderstorms from both Saturday and Sunday, it was a fun weekend getting to see the Hunger Games with Dakota Hood and to witness the marriage of two friends!

We are down to our final few weeks (about 21 days) to get your 2011 taxes filed, or an extension put in!  Smith & Smith, CPA will continue to accept new personal tax clients over the next few days and we’ll complete as many as possible and will assist with filing extensions for those who need more time.  Just remember an extension is a grace period for more time to file, but NOT to pay (if you owe).  Please feel free to contact us for more information.  If you are happy with our service, please help us out with some reviews online!  Please click HERE to write a review (click the RED box that saysWrite a Review“)  Thanks so much!   Visit our website: http://www.smithandsmithcpa.com/ for more information.
