A Full Week of Business Events in Cary, NC

It has certainly been a full and busy week!  I have a full list of events and activities to recap and I want to start with something that really had an impact on my life!

Joe Dittmar – Survivor of 9-11

Joe Dittmar, Survivor of 9-11

Last night, my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club had the pleasure of hosting Joe Dittmar as our guest speaker.  Joe was in a business meeting on the 105 Floor of Tower Two of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.   Joe was the last one of the room of 54 insurance executive to leave the room and was one of seven in their meeting to survive that day by making it out of the tower alive.  Joe shared his personal story with us last night and presented it in a way to encourage us to always remember and never forget the lives that were lost that day.  I’ve been in Rotary for over 8-years and this has to be one of our most memorable programs.  Joe doesn’t charge a fee to speak and travels around the country shearing his story.  If you ever get the opportunity to hear him speak, don’t pass it up!

Leadership Cary Class of 2015-2016

Last year I had the pleasure of being a participate in the Cary Chamber Leadership Cary Class of 2014-2015.  It was a fantastic experience, I got to meet so many influential people in Cary, see lots of behind-the-scenes places and further develop my leadership skills.  This year I was asked to be a Co-Chair for the Leadership Cary Class of 2015-2016.  The first session was earlier this week, held at Bond Park.  It was the Ropes Course and Team Building Day.  I had a great time meeting all of the participants and watching them experience the day together.  The course will meeting twice a month and will go until graduation in April of 2016.

Lia, Lois and Heidi

On Wednesday, WBON of Cary (Women Business Owners Network) hosted their Annual Fall Mega Networking Event at Prestonwood Country Club.  This is a great networking event every year.   All of the women in the room get a few minutes to share about their companies and how they work with their clients.  They always hold a contest for the most creative, most unique and most memorable.   Here is a cute pic of Lois Cozart (My Girlfriend’s Closet), Lia Sa (Fleur de Lia Alterations) and Heidi Simpson (Heidi Approved).   These three ladies will be holding an event together next Tuesday, November 17th at the My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex.  Call the store for details!

The Fall weather has been great this week, so it is time to bust open those Fall & Winter storage boxes and bring our your cooler weather wardrobe!   And speaking of My Girlfriend’s Closet, I had a great selection of Kate Spade sweater dresses from their stores to wear this week!  Lois has her stores up-to-date and stocked with the latest Fall trends and fashions (Such as: Logs of BLING, Lady Loafers, chic black boots, fringe and of course Plaid Plaid Plaid! ) Both of these dresses are NOW available in their stores for purchase and are very flattering on any shape.  The sweater fabric is thick and warm, just perfect for cool Fall days!

Cary Women’s Giving Network, Time with Wells Fargo and Some Early Halloween Fun!

It has been a busy week and it is only Wednesday!  This last week of October has really gone fast!

Cary Women’s Giving Network

Cary Women's Giving Network

Cary Women’s Giving Network

On Monday I joined the other ladies of the Cary Women’s Giving Network for our monthly gathering.  We had a delicious lunch together at the Matthews House (Bistro Lunch every Monday) and hosted Ellen Fort from the Lucy Daniels Center as our guest speaker.   Ellen is just a few months into her new role with the LDC, so she is still getting her ‘feet wet’ within the organization.  We had about 15 women in attendance for lunch and a few visitors.  The Cary Women’s Giving Network is part of the Cary Community Foundation and as associate with the North Carolina Community Foundation.  It was a nice cool crisp Fall day, so we took a group picture outside in the gardens of the Matthews House.  I love this group and the work we do in our community!   Thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in the warm tunic sweater.  It had great Fall colors and my necklace was something that I won at the Life Experiences Auction in September.

Lunch with Wells Fargo

Wells Fargo Lunch and Learn

Wells Fargo Lunch and Learn

One of the best things about the women’s network that I just mentioned, are the relationships that form within the group.  I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Pam Keene, Vice President of Business Banking with Wells Fargo, through both the GWGN and other groups over the past 11 years.  Pam and her co-worker, Mike Lynch (SBA Lending for Wells Fargo) hosted lunch for our CPA firm this afternoon.  Part of Pam’s job includes meeting with clients and referral partners to make sure there is a strong relationship and that the lines of communication are open and clear.

Pam & Mike of Wells Fargo with Alicia and Blake of Smith & Smith, CPA

Pam & Mike of Wells Fargo with Alicia and Blake of Smith & Smith, CPA

They brought lunch from City Barbeque into Smith & Smith, CPA and we had a very productive lunch meeting learning more about the products and services of Wells Fargo.   We share several mutual clients with Wells Fargo and having Pam and Mike to use as a resource and a reference is a huge asset for us!  We want to make sure clients needs are taken care of and by having a direct contact, it just makes everything run smooth on both sides!   Our entire office was able to sit-in during the “lunch and learn”.  Thank you to Pam and Mike for reaching out to us and for the delicious lunch!

Woodhaven Fall Festival

Smith & Smith, CPA Halloween Bags

Smith & Smith, CPA Halloween Bags

And now a cute little post-weekend photo!  Halloween started early for the Smith crew last weekend.  We attended the Annual Fall Family Festival at Woodhaven Baptist Church, located just a short distance from our house.  I think this is the 7th or 8th year in a row that we have attended.  The kids love it as they get to dress in their costumes, play in the bounce house, enjoy all kinds of games with prizes and have a blast.   We love it because it is outside and free!   They offer a yummy hotdog dinner and it’s a great family-fun atmosphere.

Family Fun at Woodhaven

Family Fun at Woodhaven

They do a trunk-or-treat at the end of the evening and have all kinds of cars & trucks decorated.  It is so fun to see each year!  And while you can’t see them very good in this picture, all of the Smith kids (Trent, Connor, Mark and Bailey) are using the Smith & Smith, CPA Halloween bags that we purchased a few years ago.  They were part of a marketing project and I still have a few left over, so the kids carried them to collect candy and goodies at the event.  They are nice durable bags and have our name & logo along with Trick-or-Treat Safety Tips on the side.   And yes, they got lots of good candy!  Thanks to Woodhaven for hosting this event each year!

tic tocTonight I am off to see the new Tic Toc Escape Room in downtown Raleigh!  ShopLocalRaleigh is hosting a bloggers event there tonight….stay tuned to the blog tomorrow to see how it went…and if we escaped!

Memory Cafe of Cary with Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club Friends

This week the Memory Cafe of Cary celebrated its 1-Year Anniversary.   This is the joint project among the 5 Rotary Clubs in Cary, NC as a way to honor 50 Years of Rotary in Cary (the 50th Celebration was in August 2014).   The Memory Cafe of Cary is held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month  at Bond Park Senior Center and offers a free evening of dinner, entertainment and social interaction with those in our community who have a loved one struggling with Alzheimers disease.  Our attendance has steadily grown over the year and we have really gotten to know and love many of the regular attendees.  The Memory Cafe of Cary is staffed each month by volunteers from the 5 Rotary Clubs, we come together to set-up, serve the meal, interact with the guests and clean-up. It has become a favorite event of mine each month!  We have seen many friendships form between the guests and they even have started to request being able to sit together each month and ask if their friends have arrived yet at check-in.   Check out the video below to watch the live entertainment from our 1-Year Anniversary celebration this week!  They love the music and we are always looking for volunteers to provide the entertainment!

Scholarship Program for WBON of Cary 2014-2015

Becca Smith & Steve Hand

Becca Smith & Steve Hand

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the WBON of Cary monthly May luncheon.  I was thrilled to hear my good friend and client of Smith & Smith, CPA, Steve Hand, speak on none other then NETWORKING!!!!!!  Steve is the MASTER of Networking in this area and is the proud owner of Business Network International (BNI) for a good majority of the state of North Carolina.  I have learned so much from Steve over the years about networking etiquette, the Do’s and Don’ts and so much more.   Steve gave an excellent presentation and covered such topics like “You need to build deeper relationships and put systems in place in order to generate and predict your referrals, Join a networking group and work it hard, get your target market identified and work from there.”  He also said that having people who like, care and respect you is NOT ENOUGH for them when it comes to sending referrals.  You have to make sure they KNOW what you do and HOW to refer to you.

WBON Scholarship 2014-2015

WBON Scholarship 2014-2015

He covered a 5-Step Referral Process and took a few questions at the end.   Steve is a dynamic speaker and kept the group of women engaged through his entire talk by asking different people to help read questions and using real-life example.  Great job Steve!   Yesterday was also the day that the WBON of Cary awarded their 2014-2015 Scholarship Fund Recipients.  Each year WBON of Cary gives 2-3 scholarships to women business owners and professional working women in the Cary Community.   I had applied this year and was THRILLED to have been awarded one of the scholarships!!!!   Such an exciting surprise!  WBON of Cary had been a large part of my networking and marketing focus over the past 10 years and to receive this scholarship is such an honor!

Congrats to Lois!!

Congrats to Lois!!

The scholarship is to be used for any type of educational training, classes, certifications, and to improve skills and knowledge in your focused area of business.  You have two years to use the scholarship. I plan to attend another marketing & blog conference and use that knowledge to further develop my blog into some new and exciting areas…so stay tuned!!!!!  The other scholarship was awarded to my dear friend, Lois Cozart, Owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet!!!!!!!   Lois and I were thrilled for each other!  I’ve been working with Lois for about 3-years now in a clothing-marketing relationship.

Finally a GRADUATE of Leadership Cary!

Leadership Cary Graduate

Leadership Cary Graduate

This morning was an exciting time for me!  I graduated from Leadership Cary!   The program is hosted by The Cary Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Cary and involves a 6-month leadership course with monthly meetings, events, classes, seminars, group building challenges, community service, field trips, socials and a group project.   I’ve enjoyed Leadership Cary so much and it has been a goal of mine for many years to participate on behalf of Smith & Smith, CPA.  In the past 6-months I have had the opportunity to meet community leaders from WakeMed Cary, Rex Healthcare, SAS, The Umstead Hotel, Durham Underground, Cary Visual Art, The PNC Arena, PLUS political representatives from Wake County Commissioners, Wake County School Board, NC House of Representatives, NC Senate, Town of Cary and Town Council.  I’ve made long lasting friendships, developed some business connections and even found a NEW member for my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club!  Many thanks to the Leadership Cary Sponsors, the Cary Chamber and Christie Moser for making all of the arrangements and events possible.  I truly walk away from this experience having gained so much more then I thought I would!  Here is a photo from graduation this morning with my graduation award and a group picture of The Leadership Cary Class of 2014-2015.  Thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex and downtown Cary for styling me in the stripped Saturday/Sunday dress.  Shop at either store and tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get 10% off your purchase!

A Blog All About the M’s!

My Girlfriend's Closet UpCycle Your Wardrobe

My Girlfriend’s Closet UpCycle Your Wardrobe

This week has been CRAZY and I haven’t had a chance to really blog and get some things posted.  So I’m going to try to cover it ALL in one big Friday the 13th Post!  Last week on Feb 5th there was a great event called UpCycle Your Wardrobe, hosted by none-other then My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex.  MGC continues to be one of my MOST FAVORITE places to shop and while I wasn’t able to attend this event due to a conflict with another event, (will tell you about shortly), I did have several friends that went and they had a great time!  My good friend, Jessica Register, of Union Bank, went to the event and had a lot of success cleaning out her closet and jump starting her spring wardrobe!  Here is a cute picture of her with store owner, Lois Cozart.  They plan to do more events like this and I’ll do my absolute best to make the next one!

The Golden Gates Dancers

The Golden Gates Dancers

While my friends were at MGC to UpCycle their Wardrobes, I was at my Thursday night Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club meeting.  We had a fabulous program last week that featured student exchange students from Russia, Georgia and the Ukraine.  They are part of a traveling entertainment/dancing group called The Golden Gates.  They entertained our Rotary Club with lots of cultural dance and costumes.  It was a very unique program and was enjoyed by all of our members and guests.

Last Friday night was an event that Blake & I look forward to each year….Mardi Gras!   This year the event was hosted on Friday night (used to be on Fat Tuesday), and it drew a great crowd as usual.  Lots of food from local restaurants, a local brewery and tons of great gifts to bid on in the silent and live auction.  The live band was The Back of the Boat and they had people dancing all night long!   The Mardi Gras Kick-Off Event serves as a fundraiser for both Life Experience and Cary-MacGregor Rotary Club & their programs and projects during the year.

And last but not least, Smith & Smith, CPA is a proud sponsor of a local MOPS group.  One of our clients (and a personal friend of mine) Tayloire Queen, asked me to consider sponsorship and it sounded like a great opportunity for us.  The MOPS group meets at First United Methodist Church in downtown Cary.   MOPS stands for Mothers of Preschoolers and they have groups all around the country.  This morning I was invited to join the group and do a brief presentation to them on the services offered by Smith & Smith, CPA.  I’m a big sucker for Valentine’s Day, so I made 30 gift bags for each of the ladies with all kinds of goodies, chocolates and candies.

Sugar Scrub from MOPS

Plus each bag included on our Smith & Smith, CPA HOT & COLD STRESS RELIEVER!  Very cool!   I spent a few minutes talking to the ladies about Smith & Smith, CPA and gave them a few tips & pointers to remember during tax season.  They gave me a very nice jar of Scrub-A-Dub Brown Sugar Scrub as a sweet thank you gift!!  I love sugar scrub so that was a perfect gift!   Thank you to Tayloire for the nice introduction to the MOPS group!  Tayloire is a Senior Creative Leader for Initials, Inc and recently earned a trip to Cancun through her company!  Way to go Tayloire!  Have a great time!

Michael Kors dress for Mardi Gras!

Michael Kors dress for Mardi Gras!

Many thanks to my dear friend, Lois Cozart.  I mentioned her earlier in the email, but wanted to give her another shout-out.  Lois has been dressing me for my networking events & socials for over 2-years now with items from her My Girlfriend’s Closet stores in downtown Cary and downtown Apex.  She dressed me in the Kate Spade sweater dress (seen in the photo with the Russian dance girls, as well as the Michael Kors Sequence Gold Wrap Dress for the Mardi Gras event.)  She knows style and know how to dress every woman with any type of body and style!  THANK YOU SO MUCH LOIS for this amazing marketing/promotion business relationship!

It is time to start thinking about filing those 2014 tax returns!  Smith & Smith, CPA would be glad to help, please give our office a call for a price quote and drop-off appointment.  Our CPA firm in Cary is growing and we are currently welcoming new clients.  Please check out our website for more information http://www.smithandsmithcpa.com  We are never too busy to help a small business owner with their accounting/tax needs.  We welcome referrals!

Women’s Giving Network of Cary

Hope you had a wonderful Holiday Season and that everything you celebrated was Merry and Bright!  2015 is here and it’s time to look forward to what all the new year will bring!  Right after the holidays, I had the pleasure of attending the Women’s Giving Network of Cary Annual Post-Holiday Celebration Social.  This event is hosted by the founding ladies of the Women’s Giving Network of Cary and held at the lovely home of Sheila Ogle in downtown Cary.  It’s an opportunity for the members to bring guests to find out more about the WGNC and all the grants & projects we support during the year.  I was pleased to have two guests join me, Beth Dehghan and Christine Johnson.

PrintThank you to Sheila for hosting and it was wonderful to see so many ladies who have big hearts of helping others in Cary!  Cheers to 2015!  Thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet (downtown Cary and downtown Apex) for dressing me in the silver White House Black Market sweater.  It was a cold night and the sweater was perfect!  MGC has TONS of great items for these cool winter days and nights!  Tell them you read Beccasblog and get 10% off your purchase!

Personal Shopping Through Connections

My Girlfriend's Closet

My Girlfriend’s Closet

Just a personal shout-out to a very good friend of mine, Lois Cozart.  I met Lois several years ago through a women’s networking group in Cary.  We became fast friends and quickly began supporting each other through business and referrals.  About 2-years ago, Lois, Owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet (downtown Cary and downtown Apex) offered to start dressing me for my networking events & meetings in clothes from her stores.  In return, I would promote her boutiques and encourage ladies to shop there for all of their fashion needs plus jewelry & accessories & gifts!  It has been a wonderful and very unique relationship and I have loved every minute of it!

Personal Shopping Party

Personal Shopping Party

Last Friday, I had the pleasure of teaming up with Lois again and hosted a Personal Shopping Party at her downtown Cary store.  I invited several friends & clients and we had a fabulous time!  Most of the girls had sent a list to Lois and her staff a week before the event, telling them their size range and favorite styles/designers/brands.  When we arrived at My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary, each lady had a shopping rack and selection of clothes that had been pulled just for them!  Plus we had the whole store to ourselves!  Talk about personal shopping service!  If you think this sounds like a fun thing for you and your friends (trust me, it is!) just give Lois a call (919-651-1790) and she’ll get you all set-up with your personal shopping party!  Thanks to all the ladies who came out to support and shop!  And thanks to Lois, Lia, Bethany and Brianna for their personal shopping expertise!

Cruising for Murder on the High Seas!

murder 3Have you ever been on a cruise ship?  How about a cruise ship with a MURDER!  Well, I HAVE BEEN!  Kind of…so let me explain.  Earlier this week I attended the WBON of Cary Cruising for Murder Fundraising Dinner Event.  The proceeds from this ‘Murder Cruise’ will benefit the WBON Scholarship Fund, which is awarded each year in the Spring to deserving women business owners.  I was invited to attend the Murder Mystery Dinner, Cruising for Murder, by my friend and client of Smith & Smith, CPA, Lisa Cotter, Owner of Doctors Express Urgent Care in Cary.  Lisa is so much fun and she was in-charge of the wine wall fundraising for the evening.

Lisa & Becca

Lisa & Becca

Doctors Express was also the Table Sponsor for murder mystery dinner.   Many of the attendees had parts in the mystery play and a good majority of them were also in costume.  The event was well attended and had delicious food and a nice selection of wines, plus soft-beverages.  Cruising for Murder was held at Bien Venue in Apex.  There was a whole table of auction prizes, sponsored by Carolina Prime Outlets and was appropriately called “Duty Free Shopping”.  I was the lucky winner of several auction items too!  I really enjoyed the live music that was played by Heart Rush, staring Linda Lyons of Lyons Coaching Solutions.  They had the crowd up and dancing several times on the dance floor.

Fabulous ladies of My Girlfriend's Closet

About 1/2 way through the evening there was a MURDER!  The drama unfolded, the clues were given and guesses were made as to “who done it!”  Many thanks to Lisa Cotter for inviting me to attend as her guest and thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for making sure I had a fantastic dress to wear!  Cheers to WBON of Cary and their Scholarship Program!

27th Annual Life Experiences Auction

Last night, Blake and I had the pleasure of attending the 27th Annual Harry H. Montgomery Life Experiences Auction.  The event was held at Prestonwood Country Club and had the BIGGEST crowd to date!   If you have read my blogs before, then you know about Life Experiences and that is has a very strong place in my heart!  The entire ballroom was full last night and they even had to add about 5 more tables for people to sit!  That shows you just how hard the entire Auction Committee and Board of Directors had worked to make the event great.  It takes lots of time, planning and volunteers to pull off an event of this size.  But it is such an important event to Life Experiences as it is their biggest fundraiser of the year.

It is actually a two-day event with the auction held on Sunday evening and a golf tournament held today (Monday) also at Prestonwood Country Club (they have a gorgeous day for golf today!).  The Rotary Clubs of Apex and Cary were very strong supporters and also provided many of the volunteers who helped work the auction tables last night.  I was happy to help serve on the Auction Committee on-behalf of Smith & Smith, CPA and part of my responsibilities included helping collect auction items.  Many thanks to my dear friend, Cynthia Dishman, of Lucy & Bee, for making a donation.  Cynthia is a professional seamstress and hand-makes many amazing items.  She generously donated one of her 18″ doll outfits and shoes.  It was simply beautiful and I borrowed the American Girl Doll, Saige, from Alicia’s daughter, Ava, to use as a model for the outfit.  It made for a very unique auction item.  Thank you to both Cynthia and Ava!  I also had a nights stay at Gunther Lodge at Holston Camp in Banner Elk, NC donated by Craig Bell, Camp Director for Holston Camp.  Each year during the first weekend in December, Holston Camp hosts a Christmas Family weekend.  The winner of this item gets to attend that weekend with their family and participate in all the festivities.  Once the silent auction part ended, there was a LIVE AUCTION that featured over 25 fabulous prizes and trips!

According to my calculations, over $15,000 alone was raised during the live auction! How exciting!  Many thanks to all of the wonderful sponsors, committee members, volunteers, attendees, bidders and most of all to Mary Madenspacher, Executive Director at Life Experiences, for making last night a huge success!  Hope the golfers have fun today and make plans to attend next year! Blake and I had a fantastic time seeing friends and clients and enjoy this event every year.   Many thanks to Lois Cozart, owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in the Calvin Klein black sequence cocktail dress last night!  MGC in downtown Cary and downtown Apex has a HUGE selection of Fall & Winter fashions, shoes and accessories!  Stop by to shop, mention Becca’s Blog and get 10% off your purchase Shop Local!
