Serving with Life Experiences

Today wraps up the end of my year serving Life Experiences as the President for the Board of Directors.  It has been such a fantastic experience and one that I took very seriously.  I have been involved with Life Experiences for many years now and will continue to serve another 3-year term on the Board.   I am so grateful for this special group of people and for all of the friendships I have made along the way.  Thank you to the Board members who served with me this past year and we have another big year ahead of us!   Part of my heart will always be and belong at Life Experiences!

February 2017 Business Events and Parties

Megan and Blake

I can’t help but get a LITTLE BIT excited when I look at my calendar for the month of February!  Not only is it my birthday month (YEA!!!) but it also has a ton of other fun, fun, and MORE fun things to happen!   One event that we look forward to each year is the Cary Chamber of Commerce Annual Auction & Reverse Car Raffle.  This will be held at Prestonwood Country Club on Wednesday, Feb 22nd.  It is always a super fun party, lots of friends and business clients, tons of good things up for auction and a chance to drive away in a BRAND new Car (is this the year for me…mabye!?!?!?)  One of my favorite tax clients and friend who works at the Cary Chamber, Megan Kervin, came by the office today to pick-up her taxes and took our Smith & Smith, CPA donations of 2 gift baskets for the Cary Chamber Auction. I kept it simple and YUMMY again this year with two big baskets of girl scout cookies from my friend’s GS troop.  We can’t wait for the party!

Art Ball 20!

Another event that we are deeply rooted in that is coming up on Saturday, February 11th, is the 20th Annual Art Ball for Cary Visual Art.  I have the honor of serving as Co-Chair again this year with local modern Cary Artist, Dan Campbell.  We are breaking the mold and taking the event out of Cary this year (Gasp! I know!!) and having it at the North Carolina Museum of Art.  The evening begins at 6:30pm and will include the following: Champagne reception, delicious culinary works of art by the chefs of Iris Cafe, dancing to live music by the Johnny White and The Elite Band, artwork by local artist, exclusive after-hours access to the Contemporary American Art Wing of the NCMA, short film to celebrate 20 years of CVA and complimentary valet parking!  I am so excited I can’t hardly wait!  I have my dress ready and picked up my jewelry, shoes and clutch today from My Girlfriend’s Closet in Apex and we are getting Blake fitted for his tux this afternoon.   I am very happy to have Smith & Smith, CPA involved again this year as a CVA Bronze Sponsor Sustainer.  My brother-in-law and his wife will attend the Ball with us too.  There are a few tickets left, so be sure to purchase today!  And shop in downtown Apex and downtown Cary at My Girlfriend’s Closet for a huge selection of gorgeous gowns, shoes, and accessories!

Mardi Gras with Cary MacGregor Rotary Club

Coming up at the end of the month on Friday, February 24th is Mardi Gras Kick-Off Fundraiser with the Cary MacGregor Rotary Club.  We have been going to this big party for about 6-7 years now and always have a blast!  They have changed the venue this year so I am excited to see how it all works out!  I am very happy to see that Life Experiences is one of the two beneficiaries for the event that night.  Blake and I are sponsors for the event under our Smith & Smith, CPA name so we have 15 tickets to share around with family and friends.  Stay tuned to see how it goes!

Harvey at the office

I will also get to see my parents & grandmother in a few weeks and celebrate a special friend’s 40th birthday! And don’t forget the day of L.O.V.E. with Valentine’s Day!!!!! Let’s go February!  I am READY!  And Happy 1-Week Birthday in the Smith Family to little Harvey!  Hard to believe we have already had her for 1-week!  Things are going well and she is learning about us as we learn about her.  She has been to the office off-and-on over the past week and had a chance to meet LOTS and LOTS of new friends!  She will meet a lot more people this weekend on Super Bowl Sunday!

The Gifting Tree for Town of Cary

The Gifting Tree 2016

The Gifting Tree 2016

Happy December!  It is time for the Annual Town of Cary Gifting Tree Project!  Once again, Smith & Smith, CPA is participating in this event and we went downtown Cary last week to decorate our Christmas tree.  I LOVE our location this year, we are right at the corner of Academy and Chatham Street in the heart of downtown Cary!  We are at the traffic light right across from Ashworth Drugs.  Our tree is a little different this year and is decorated with patriotic spirit as a reversed American Flag.  Many thanks to my good friend, Lindsey Dishman, for helping me come up with the idea!  I spray painted the top of the tree white and the bottom of the tree blue (we won’t talk about what my hands looked like once that was done!!).  Then I used red ribbon and bows for the top of the tree (for the stripes on the flag) and huge white snowflake ornaments (bought in Savannah, GA) for the white stars on the flag on the bottom of the tree.  I also have new solar lights on the tree to light it up at dark.  Please take a few minutes to use this LINK to vote for our tree. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/cqhnpy9  It is one vote per email, so you only have to vote once!  The winning tree with the MOST votes will get $500 for the charity of their choice!  We will be supporting Life Experiences again this year as our charity of choice!  So please VOTE!

Life Experiences Annual Christmas Party

Matt playing Santa for Life Experiences

Matt playing Santa for Life Experiences

Speaking of Life Experiences, last night was their Annual Christmas Party.  It is always so much fun and an event that my family looks forward to each year.  It is a covered dish dinner party and all of the sweet employees trade names with each other and swap gifts.   One of them gets to dress up as Santa Claus too and passes out all of the gifts.  This year Santa was played by Matt.  He was so happy and you can see the big smile on his face!  Trent and Mark helped to pass out the gifts too.  It is so important to me so see our children involved with helping and loving others.  During the party, Mary Madenspacher, Executive Director, passed the microphone around the room and everyone got a chance to introduce themselves and their families.  It is so sweet to hear them tell how much Life Experiences means to them and sometimes they say really funny things too!   I am so honored to serve at the Board President for Life Experiences this year.  Here is a great photo of our Board Members at the party last night.  Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex for helping me shop for this beautiful sparkly silver sweater!  They have tons of great holiday wear so check them out for your upcoming Christmas & Holiday parties!!!!!!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get a discount with your purchase!

Veterans Day 2016 and More

veteransFirst of all, Happy Veterans Day and a big THANK YOU to those who have served and defended our country.  Today (and everyday) is a day to honor YOU and your service!

The kids are out of school, so they are here at the office with us today.  One of the many perks of a “family run business“!  Here is a picture of the cousins with Grandpa outside the office.  Thankfully we have a nice grassy field next to our office and they can run and play games together.

Dorcas Ministries

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the Dorcas Ministry 5th Annual Thanksgiving Breakfast.  This is such a nice event each year and once again the room was PACKED with supporters from all over Cary!  I am happy to report that through many generous donations at the breakfast they raised over $148,000 for their programs & services!

Triangle Business Journal Power Breakfast

NC Governor McCrory at TBJ Power Breakfast

NC Governor McCrory at TBJ Power Breakfast

Last week I attended the Triangle Business Journal (TBJ) Power Breakfast that featured NC Governor, Pat McCrory.  The event has hosted by Deloitte and held at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary NC District Attorney, Roy Cooper, had also been invited to attend the Power Breakfast, but had declined to attend.  Governor McCrory was seated on stage in a causal setting and was joined by several TBJ interviewers and reporters.   They took questions from the audience and topics ranged from schools/education, to transportation, health care and the NC Economy.  I ended up sitting with a friend from my Cary Chamber Leadership Cary class and we enjoyed seeing each other and catching up on work/life.  I appreciate the TJB holding events like this where business owners & business leaders in the community can get a chance to interact on a personal level with our elected officials.  I waited after the breakfast meeting to have a chance to greet the Governor and take a photo.  I had met him about 4 years ago when he was in Cary for another meeting.  You can read more about the Power Breakfast meeting here.  Thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet in Cary for helping me select this beautiful off-white Diane Von Furstenberg dress to wear to the breakfast meeting.   My Girlfriends Closet is having their End of Summer Sale right now!  Stop by and tell them you read Beccasblog.com!

Why I LOVE our Clients at Smith & Smith, CPA

Oranges for CPA office

Oranges for CPA office

Everyone always ask “Oh don’t you just hate tax season since you are so busy!?!”  and the truth is NO, we don’t hate it at all.  Now don’t get me wrong, we ARE BUSY and it is kinda crazy in here, but the pure fact that we have REALLY awesome clients makes it so much easier to get through this time of year!  Just check out this fresh bag of oranges that one of our clients brought in the other day!  Nothing is as good as a fresh orange!  We have also had several of our referral clients bring in breakfast and coffee, what a great way to start the day!   Not to mention, Blake has received some really nice emails from clients, thanking him for our hard work, professional manner and friendly service.   Check out this one email he got this week!

“Hi Blake, once again, thank you very much for doing my taxes this year.  Your firm is just amazing and you do a fantastic professional job.  I enjoy working with you.”

Lunch from Serendipity Cafe

Yummy sandwich from Serendipity Cafe

Yummy sandwich from Serendipity Cafe

And a special thanks to Serendipity Cafe, one of our restaurant clients located in downtown Cary, for bringing us lunch today! YUMMY-YUM!!!!  By far one of my MOST FAVORITE places in downtown Cary to eat!   We all got to order one of our fresh made sandwiches.  What a great lunch for a Friday afternoon to kick off the weekend!  We ordered: The Hot Turkey Melt, Crown Club, Reuben and Tried & True!  Who is ready for lunch today!?!  WE ARE!!

Brownies from Life Experiences

Brownies from Life Experiences

Brownies from Life Experiences

So how about ONE MORE food post to cap off this blog for the day!!?!  My little guy, Mark, had to create a business for his kindergarten class last week and bring items to sell.  It was their “Economy Day”.   So he decided to sell brownies and lemonade.  We borrowed a lemonade stand from our neighbor from him to use at school, and well, long story short, the brownies I ‘attempted’ to make at home went right in the trash!  (don’t ask!!!)  So who else do you call when you need the BEST Brownies in town!?!  Life Experiences!!!!!  They have the BEST bakery in town, staffed by adults with disabilities and their brownies are made with LOVE and so good! So those are the brownies that Mark proudly sold at his lemonade and brownie stand last week.  🙂   Get an order today!

February is for FUN!

Mardi Gras!

Mardi Gras!

I think I say this EVERY YEAR, but hands-down, February is STILL my FAVORITE month!  From Mardi Gras, to Super Bowl and celebrating birthdays and Valentine’s DayWOW, just SO MUCH to celebrate!   So I’ll start with Mardi Gras…each year, the Cary MacGregor Rotary Club puts on a HUGE Mardi Gras Kick Off BASH!  This year, the 9th Annual event was held at The Atrium in Regency Park in Cary.  Live music was provided by The Back of the Boat Band, and there was Live Auction, Silent Auction, Raffle Auction, plus over 25 different food, beverage and dessert vendors!  All of the proceeds from the event went to Life Experiences, plus other local charities and humanitarian projects in the community.

Smith & Smith, CPA

Smith & Smith, CPA

I’m a proud Board Member for Life Experiences, so we are always excited to attend this event!  Blake and I did a sponsorship on behalf of Smith & Smith, CPA and invited our whole office to attend.  Cam and Brooke were not able to go due to a family event, but Alicia and her mom came along and we had the BEST time!  From the fun and colorful Mardi Gras face masks, to the delicious foods, dancing and auction bidding, we really enjoyed the WHOLE time!  My Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club had many members there too and was proud to support our very own club member, Mary Madenspacher, Executive Director for Life Experiences.  There was over 400 people there and from what I have heard so far, the preliminary numbers show that it was a SUCCESSFUL event for ALL!

Super Bowl 50

Super Bowl 50

Super Bowl 50

We were SO proud to have the Carolina Panthers in the 50th Super Bowl!  We had a lot of friends and family over to our house and celebrated the game together.  We sure were hoping for a Carolina Panthers Super Bowl WIN, but alas, as you know, they just couldn’t get it together to beat the Denver Broncos!  We did have some Denver Broncos fans in the house though, as our good friends, Tia & Ethan Coppus are DIE-HARD Broncos fans!

Birthday Celebration

happy 60th bobWe have TWO office birthdays at Smith & Smith, CPA in the month of February…still not as many as we have in July (3) and November (3) but it’s a month of birthdays for Bob and me!   Bob turned the BIG 60 on February 4th and we celebrated with Krispy Kreme donuts (HOT NOW sign was ON), plus a brownie cake made by Brooke and a fresh fruit display from Edible Arrangements.  My birthday rolled around yesterday and I had SO MUCH fun having friends stop by with flowers, treats, goodies, hugs and cards!

Goodies from friends & Southern Oak Gift Co.

Goodies from friends & Southern Oak Gift Co.

They sure do know how to make a girl feel LOVED!   Once special gift was from a new friend & neighbor, Shea Armstrong.  Her business is called Southern Oak Gift Company and she provides gift boxes, bags and baskets for ALL occasions.  She brought me a beautiful red box of goodies yesterday and I am just smitten with her company!  Blake took me out last night to Full Moon Oyster Bar for a birthday dinner with friends.  What a YUMMY place!   Thanks for all of the birthday love!  February, you have been good to me!  Tax season is cranking up BIG time, so all of the fun in February makes it a little less…taxing.  🙂

Tax Class for 2016 and Let’s Party for Christmas!

Tax Class Seminar

Tax Class Seminar

You would probably not think that Tax Classes and Christmas Parties go hand-in-hand, but around here they kind of do.   You see, each year, the CPA’s and accountants in our office have to go through tax classes and earn CPE Credits to keep their license to practice tax.  The guys at Smith & Smith, CPA take a 2-day course in Greensboro that is put on by the Don Farmer Tax Seminar.  Now I know that sounds REALLY exciting and you are jealous that you can’t go!  So all joking aside, it is a really good course, they learn all about the new tax laws and changes and come back with their heads spinning on the new info!  Alicia is also taking her tax classes this week, but she stays close to home and completes her courses in Raleigh.  The guys are out of town in Greensboro for their big seminar.

Life Experiences Christmas Party

Life Experiences with Rotary Friends

Life Experiences with Rotary Friends

Earlier this week we had the Life Experiences Christmas Party.  It really is the BEST party of the year!  I’m proud to serve on the Board at Life Experiences and their Christmas party is a time when all of the clients, staff, Board, and families can come together to share a pot luck meal, meet each other, sing songs, and best of all, open gifts!  They each trade names and bring a special present for each other.  The clients also get a brand new Life Experiences t-shirt, something that they LOVE and truly Cherish.

Full House for the Party

Full House for the Party

Each year, one of the clients gets to dress up as Santa Clause and give out all of the gifts.  Mary Madenspacher, Executive Director for Life Experiences, also takes the microphone around to each one and let’s them say their name, introduce their families and say really whatever they want.  It’s a hoot as you never really know what is going to be said!  We had a great time at the party and I’m so proud to have many of my fellow Rotarians from the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club there with me!  Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet for the beautiful black and white polka-dot dress.

Union Bank Christmas Party

Friends of Union Bank

Friends of Union Bank

Union Bank also had their Christmas Party this week.  My good friends, Jessica Register and Julie Clark, work for Union Bank and were kind to invite me to their office party.  Union Bank hosted their 2015 Wake County Christmas Open House at their Cary location, 111 Commonwealth Court, and had a huge crowd of clients, friends, Chamber members, Rotarians, and community leaders in attendance.  Jessica and I have been friends for several years now and have been on the Cary Chamber Membership Drive Rewards Trip together for the past 2 years!

Shop Local!

Shop Local!

Jessica and I both LOVE to shop and we LOVE consignment stores because you can find the best deals without having to pay a ton of $$$$.   Don’t we both look holiday-cute!?!  I’m wearing a black and white stripped sweater (it has some shine to it) from My Girlfriend’s Closet (stores in downtown Cary and downtown Apex).  I could have worn it with a black skirt, but I think the red makes it much more festive and styled for the holidays!  Jessica is wearing a black and white sweater too, her’s has some sequence sewn it, is hard to see in the picture, but in person it was very pretty and had a lot of texture and sparkle.  Jessica got her sweater from Classic Clothiers Consignment Boutique in Cary.  Her shoes (cute wedges) were from My Girlfriend’s Closet.  Why shop at the high dollar stores when you can shop local and get great deals!

Bass Pro Santa Shout-Out

Bass Pro Santa

Bass Pro Santa

And finally, I have to do a Christmas Shout-Out to my work friends…we meet once a month for lunch.  Earlier this week we had our December Christmas Holiday Lunch at Rally Point in Cary.   We have done different Christmas gifts and exchange parties over the years…this year we decided to do a Christmas Wrapping Paper Exchange!   Everyone brought 2 rolls of wrapping paper (or 3 gift bags) and we put them down inside of a black trash bag.  We then drew numbers and took turns grabbing gift wrap out of the bag, OR, you could steal the gift wrap from someone else.  Apparently the Snowman gift wrap is VERY popular among my friends!

All I want for Christmas

All I want for Christmas

After lunch, we went over to Bass Pro Shop in Cary and had our group picture made with Santa Clause.  I mean, how much fun is that !?!?!   I love Bass Pro Shop, even though I don’t hunt and I only fish with my parents.   They have all kinds of cool things in their store!  Plus I got to ride a 4-wheeler out front (well, not really, but I did pretend).  And one final THANKS to My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in this gorgeous Lilly Pulitzer Blayney Ruffle Dress.  The weather has been SO WARM this week,  I knew this colorful dress would be perfect!   Shop at My Girlfriend’s Closet and mention Beccasblog.com to get 10% off your Total Purchase!

ALSO, please remember to VOTE for our Smith & Smith, CPA tree as part of the Town of Cary Gifting Tree Project!!!  Voting goes until Saturday December 19th!  Winners gets $500 to the Charity of their Choice and ours would go to Life Experiences!

Vote for the Gifting Tree in Downtown Cary

Vote for our Tree!

Vote for our Tree!

For a second year in a row, Smith & Smith, CPA is proud to participate in the Gifting Tree Project as part of the downtown Cary Holiday CelebrationThe Gifting Tree Proejct is hosted by Town of Cary and sponsored by The Mayton Inn (the brand new boutique hotel in downtown Cary that will open in 2016).  The Gifting Tree Project invites community members, non-profits, service clubs/groups and small businesses to decorate a Christmas Tree on the Town Hall Campus.   The trees can be decorated in anyway you like and with any theme idea, however, there are just a few rules including no food decorations and that your ornaments need to be weather-resistant (the trees are outside and in the loop around the campus).  The community is invited to cast a vote online for their favorite tree and the winner of the The People’s Choice with the most votes will have a donation of $500 made to the non-profit of their choice.

Rotary Tree

Rotary Tree

I went downtown last week to decorate our tree.  There is some really good competition this year with 24 trees in the race!  As part of the Board of Directors for Life Experiences, if our Smith & Smith, CPA tree wins, we will have the donation of $500 made to them! YEA!  I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see that happen!  Please take time to VOTE.  You can only vote ONCE per email address, so vote carefully!  I do have to give a shout-out to a few of the other trees in the Gifting Tree Project.  Check out the tree that was sponsored by the 5 Rotary Clubs in CaryThe Rotary Clubs of Cary Christmas Tree!  All 5 clubs worked together to make the ornaments and decorate the tree.  It reflects all of the great work and good projects that we do in the world.

Super Cute Tree

Super Cute Tree

Also take a look at the tree from My Girlfriend’s Closet.   I LOVE their creativity and all of the ribbon and tulle on the tree.  They also added the arms from one of the store mannequins holding their sign.  So creative!   So please take time over the next 2 weeks to VOTE online for the Town of Cary Gifting Tree Project. The voting period is December 5th through December 19th.  And remember, it is ONE vote per email address, so multiple votes from the same email will not count.  Please consider Smith & Smith, CPA as your top vote and let’s get that $500 to Life Experiences!  It will make a big impact for them!

Friends of Life Experiences

Last night was the 28th Annual Harry H. Montgomery Auction and Golf Tournament for Life Experiences.  It was such a fun night and a lot of planning and preparation went into making it such a successful event!  I was happy to help serve on the Auction Committee again this year and we had some really fantastic items up for bidding during both the silent and live auction.   Congrats to Mary Madenspacher, Executive Director, of Life Experiences for a wonderful night, lots of funds raised to support their mission and to Mary on her recent 20th Anniversary with Life Experiences!

Smith & Smith, CPA was happy to support the auction by donating a Wheelbarrow Basket full of Fall weather yard needs, such as a new rake, a new shovel, leaf scoop hands, yard waste bags and of course, a new wheelbarrow!   We also teamed up with one of our Smith & Smith, CPA clients, Leapfrog Landcare to include a $100 gift certificate for shrub, tree or plant treatment.  The Wheelbarrow basket looked really good and had lots of bids!  Thanks to all of our friends who came out last night and joined in on the celebration and fundraising for Life Experiences!  The event was held at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary and was sponsored by 8 local Rotary Clubs.  I’m so pleased to say that we had 11 members present at the event last night from our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club!   I am also happy to report that I was the ‘winner’ of several great auction items!  Blake never considers that ‘winning’ though……

Speaking of Blake, he is on the golf course today over at Prestonwood Country Club playing in the Life Experiences Golf Tournament!  We ended up getting to be a last minute team in the tournament, so Blake is over there today, along with Cam, Brooke and Dennis Sargent, giving it a go on the greens.  The weather is kinda ‘iffy’ out there to me…about 81 degrees and overcast, but muggy  I am sure they are having a great time. The Golf Tournament for Life Experiences was a 12:30pm shotgun start playing Captain’s Choice.   There will be refreshments, awards and recognition following the tournament later today at 6pm.  There are over 32 teams in the tournament today and they are playing on both courses at Preston.  Our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club also has 2 teams playing in the tournament today.  Good luck out there!  Thank you to Harold K. Jordan & Co. for being the Grand Patron Sponsor for the 28th Annual Harry H. Montgomery Life Experiences Auction and Golf Tournament!

And one last photo to share…last Thursday was the Cary Chamber of Commerce Business of Women Luncheon.   The Speaker was NC House of Representatives District 41, Gale Adcock.   Gale has been a friend of mine for several years now and her topic was “Diary of a Fresh(wo)man Legislator”.  I really enjoyed hearing her speak, as I always do!  I had a blast at lunch with friend Jessica Garcia and Linda Ward too!   Thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriends Closet for dressing me in the stylish red dress!  I had lots of compliments!
