Leadership Cary in Education with the Cary Chamber of Commerce

Friends at Leadership Cary with Lisa Wilson

Friends at Leadership Cary with Lisa Wilson

Earlier this week I attended the Cary Chamber Leadership Cary Class of 2015-2016 seminar on Education.  I am happy to serve at the Co-Chair for this year’s class.  We started the day off at the Cary Chamber of Commerce in downtown Cary where we heard from Wake County Public Schools Superintended, Dr. Jim Merrill.  Dr. Merrill gave an overview of the current WCPSS stats, number of schools, students, amount spent per student, teacher salaries and graduation rates.

WCPSS Board Member, Bill Fletcher

WCPSS Board Member, Bill Fletcher

He also discussed the goal for 2020 to have a 95% Gradation Rate…which also includes students having the skills to be able to walk at graduation but also move on to the next level…being prepared for the real world!  After Dr. Merrill we heard from Bill Fletcher, Board Member for Wake County Public School System.  Bill spoke on building new schools, student population growth, student achievement and the upcoming election in November.  Bill has been a friend for many years, he is active in Rotary and really tires to connect the community with the school board.

I enjoyed hearing both of them speak.   After Bill, we heard from Lisa Wilson, Director for Corporate Relations Wake Technical Community College.  Lisa is a fellow East Carolina University alumni (GO PIRATES) and she spoke on the new things at Wake Tech, their growth and NINE campus locations all in Wake County.   After the morning session, I came back to work (it’s Tax Season after all!) and the group went over to tour Hunt Library at NC State and learned more about Vernon Malone College and Career Academy.   Thanks to Christie Moser for her guidance and support to the Cary Leadership class!  Christie works at the Cary Chamber and makes all of the Leadership Cary plans and arrangements.

I had a sweet visitor at work yesterday too!  My good friend, Tia Coppus, brought their dog, Alexa, by to see me.  We have helped to doggie-sit Alexa over the past few months and I always get exited to see her!  We have not gotten another dog yet, our 10 1/2 year old dog, Griffin, passed away in December.  The boys are hoping to get another dog soon, we keep telling them we have to get through tax season first!  Thanks to My Girlfriends Closet for the super cute pink and black polka-dot dress!  I paired it with a black cardigan and stayed comfy all day!  And I think Alexa liked stopping by to see me too 🙂  Thanks Tia!!!  She made my day!

Donuts!

Donuts!

Another sweet treat!?!  We had a guy stop by the office who was selling Krispy Kreme donuts for a fundraiser and yes, we didn’t say NO!  The guys bought several boxes an had them for breakfast, lunch and a later afternoon snack!   For some reason…those donuts in the Fundraiser boxes always seem to have LOTS of extra frosting on them!  We are in count-down-mode at work…Friday March 18th is ONE MONTH until TAX DAY…April 18th 2016!  Don’t Blake, Bob and Cam look cute!?!?!

A Full Week of Business Events in Cary, NC

It has certainly been a full and busy week!  I have a full list of events and activities to recap and I want to start with something that really had an impact on my life!

Joe Dittmar – Survivor of 9-11

Joe Dittmar, Survivor of 9-11

Joe Dittmar, Survivor of 9-11

Last night, my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club had the pleasure of hosting Joe Dittmar as our guest speaker.  Joe was in a business meeting on the 105 Floor of Tower Two of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.   Joe was the last one of the room of 54 insurance executive to leave the room and was one of seven in their meeting to survive that day by making it out of the tower alive.  Joe shared his personal story with us last night and presented it in a way to encourage us to always remember and never forget the lives that were lost that day.  I’ve been in Rotary for over 8-years and this has to be one of our most memorable programs.  Joe doesn’t charge a fee to speak and travels around the country shearing his story.  If you ever get the opportunity to hear him speak, don’t pass it up!

On Wednesday, WBON of Cary (Women Business Owners Network) hosted their Annual Fall Mega Networking Event at Prestonwood Country Club.  This is a great networking event every year.   All of the women in the room get a few minutes to share about their companies and how they work with their clients.  They always hold a contest for the most creative, most unique and most memorable.   Here is a cute pic of Lois Cozart (My Girlfriend’s Closet), Lia Sa (Fleur de Lia Alterations) and Heidi Simpson (Heidi Approved).   These three ladies will be holding an event together next Tuesday, November 17th at the My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex.  Call the store for details!

Best Night of Baseball EVER…with The Miracle League of the Triangle

Leadership Cary at The Miracle League of the Triangle

Leadership Cary at The Miracle League of the Triangle

Last night was our Community Service Project with our Leadership Cary Class of 2014-2015.   We were signed-up to be Volunteer Baseball Buddies for The Miracle League of the Triangle.  The Vision of The Miracle League is “Everyone deserves to experience joy and community through baseball” and operate with their Mission “The create positive life experiences for children and adults with specials needs and for their families through baseball.”  The Miracle League opened their field in Cary, NC on September 16 2006 and had their first season on the Andy’s Foundation Ball Field with more than 100 payers and 200 volunteers from around the Triangle area.   There are now two fields (one in North Raleigh) and they serve over 400 players on 30 teams.

My baseball buddy, Andrew

My baseball buddy, Andrew

I’ve been familiar with The Miracle League for a while now as my good friend, Seth Walter, has played baseball with them for several years.    I had a chance to go see him play late last year and LOVED watching him smile and celebrate as he hit the ball and ran the bases!  When you play baseball on the field, there are NO OUTS, NO STRIKES, everyone gets a chance to hit the ball-regardless of their ability, and everyone WINS!   It’s such a positive and encouraging atmosphere.  Last night with my first chance to serve as a “baseball buddy”.  We had about 20 members of our Leadership Cary group there to help volunteer and it was SO MUCH FUN!  There were two games played, each games last about 1 hour 15 mins.   Once you arrive and get signed-in and watch a Volunteer Orientation Video, you are then paired up with a baseball player for the game, you are their baseball buddy!  You stay with them through the whole game, you help them at bat, run the bases with them, and assist in the field.   It’s soooooooo much fun and very rewarding to be out there helping.  The players abilities range but their smiles are all the same!  They LOVE IT!

Baseball Field

My baseball player was Andrew.  He has autism and was non-verbal but we had a great time playing baseball together.  He was really good at throwing the ball and had a good arm at the bat too!   His mom and dad were there to watch him play.   He really liked the bright yellow baseball that we were throwing together during warm-up.   I enjoyed being his buddy and here are a few pictures from last night to share.   Thanks again to Christie Moser of the Cary Chamber and program facilitator for Leadership Cary, for selecting this as our Community Service Project!

I think it was a fantastic night!

Finally a GRADUATE of Leadership Cary!

Leadership Cary Graduate

Leadership Cary Graduate

This morning was an exciting time for me!  I graduated from Leadership Cary!   The program is hosted by The Cary Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Cary and involves a 6-month leadership course with monthly meetings, events, classes, seminars, group building challenges, community service, field trips, socials and a group project.   I’ve enjoyed Leadership Cary so much and it has been a goal of mine for many years to participate on behalf of Smith & Smith, CPA.  In the past 6-months I have had the opportunity to meet community leaders from WakeMed Cary, Rex Healthcare, SAS, The Umstead Hotel, Durham Underground, Cary Visual Art, The PNC Arena, PLUS political representatives from Wake County Commissioners, Wake County School Board, NC House of Representatives, NC Senate, Town of Cary and Town Council.  I’ve made long lasting friendships, developed some business connections and even found a NEW member for my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club!  Many thanks to the Leadership Cary Sponsors, the Cary Chamber and Christie Moser for making all of the arrangements and events possible.  I truly walk away from this experience having gained so much more then I thought I would!  Here is a photo from graduation this morning with my graduation award and a group picture of The Leadership Cary Class of 2014-2015.  Thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex and downtown Cary for styling me in the stripped Saturday/Sunday dress.  Shop at either store and tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get 10% off your purchase!

Leadership Cary Explores Health & Medical in and around Cary

Leadership Cary Medical & Health Day

Leadership Cary Medical & Health Day

On Thursday, January 22nd 2015, Leadership Cary held their second January session, Health & Medical Services.  I was very excited to attend as the agenda was packed full of great programs all day long!  We began at WakeMed Cary Hospital and Leadership Cary participants who arrived early had the opportunity for Full Lipid Cholesterol Screening and Blood Pressure Checks by the Corporate & Community Health Team at WakeMed Cary.  I took advantage of this service and am proud to say that my Total Cholesterol, HDL Cholesterol, TC/HDL Ratio, LDL Cholesterol, Triglycerides, Fasting Glucose, Blood Pressure and Heart Rate all looked great!  Whew!!

Translation Services at WakeMed Cary

Translation Services at WakeMed Cary

Our first speaker was David Coulter, Senior Vice President and Administrator for WakeMed Cary Hospital.   Following Mr. Coulter, we heard from Dr. West Paul, Vice President and Chief Quality Officer about the Safety, Services and Quality at WakeMed.  Dr. Paul challenged us to think of why and how we choose our healthcare providers and what we expect our outcomes to be.  He shared some good tips about looking into the quality of care on review sites before selecting doctors and hospitals.   He also talked about the HELP program at WakeMed Cary H-Hospital E-Elder L-Life P-Program and the “Silver Spoons”-a group that helps feed those hospital patients who need assistance.

Da Vinci Robotic Machine

Da Vinci Robotic Machine

Dr. Brain Klausner, Internal Medicine and Medical Director for WakeMed Key Community Care ACO spoke next and shared some interesting stories about his years in Boston and how they tried to help the homeless get care and keep them from coming to the ER 5-7 times a week.  The next part was my favorite as we heard from Jennifer Lee about the Translations Services for patients, which involves a ‘skype’ style conversation with a doctor who also speaks the same language.  WakeMed has access to 17 difference language interpreters and another 180 language conversions in their database.  The whole demo was so impressive!  Then we had a tour of the Pathology Lab….don’t touch ANYTHING!!!!

CPR Session

CPR Session

Our last stop before lunch was soooooooo cool….the Da Vinci Robotic Surgery Machine!  I’ve never seen anything like this before in person!  We were able to interact with the surgical robot and even got to do a ‘mock surgery session’, I was pretty good if I do say so myself!   We had a delicious lunch in the Points West Cafe in the hospital and then heard from Tara Wind, Clinical Dietitian at WakeMed Cary about the Meredith College Dietetic Internship Site Preceptor program.

Say NO to big sugary drinks! Tara Wind, Clinical Dietitian

Say NO to big sugary drinks! Tara Wind, Clinical Dietitian

Tara gave us some tips on choosing healthy foods….her biggest advice was to READ the LABELS (or buy fresh foods!) and to STAY AWAY FROM THE “NO SUGAR ADDED” FRUIT DRINKS at the store!  Tara is also a blogger and you can find her blog at A Preceptor’s Musings.  After Tara, we had a VERY helpful and fun session learning about CPR from Linda Barrett, Corporate & Community Health Advisor for WakeMed Cary.  Each Leadership Cary member was given a CPR Kit that included a “Mini Anne” inflatable dummy to practice with for CPR.  It was challenging to say the least and I’m glad I understand how the ‘practice’ of CPR has changed over the years and that “Any CPR is better then NO CPR” in the case of an emergency.  We then traveled to Rex Wellness Center in Cary and heard from Megan Lumley, Director of Rex Express Care and Amy Daniels of the Foundation for Rex Healthcare.  I enjoyed hearing from both of them and LOVED the ‘Rex Doctor Rap Video’.   Our final part was to tour the Rex Wellness facility, it has an indoor pool, workout rooms, exercise equipment, sauna and very nice locker rooms!

My Girlfriend's Closet

My Girlfriend’s Closet

Thanks to much to the Cary Chamber and Christie Moser for heading up Leadership Cary and putting together such a fantastic day!  Thank you also to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet (downtown Cary and downtown Apex) for dressing me in the Kate Spade Selma Sweater Dress with All Aboard Nautical Stripes in Madrid Orange and Cream .  I had lots of compliments!  Shop their stores for the best fashions and prices in town!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com and get 10% your purchase!

Cultural Arts Day with Leadership Cary

Leadership Cary with the Hurricanes Hockey Eye

Leadership Cary with the Hurricanes Hockey Eye

Last week was the January Session meeting for Leadership Cary.  It was our Cultural Arts Day, so fun!  The day started off with a meet and greet and breakfast at the Cary Arts Center.  This facility opened a few years ago and has served as a focal point for downtown Cary.   Our first speaker was Ted Boyd, Downtown Development Manager for the Town of Cary.  Ted spoke about the changes coming to downtown Cary and how the economic activity and interest has been picking up over the past few months.  Construction has already begun on the boutique hotel that will be completed by the end of 2015 and opened in early 2016.  leadership cary 3Next we heard from Mary Davis  Wallace, Executive Director of Cary Visual Art and had a walking tour of the art all along Academy Street in downtown Cary.  The weather was cool and brisk, but we were all bundled up warm!  I enjoyed seeing all of the art and learning about the artist and how the art was selected.  I’m happy to be part of the Cary Visual Art group and helped plan the Art Ball 2014.  After the art walk tour, we boarded the bus and headed to the PNC Arena and had a tour with Mike Miller of the Carolina Hurricanes.

PNC Arena Tour

PNC Arena Tour

Mike took us all around the PNC Center, to the press box, marketing office, locker room and many other cool behind-the-scenes places!  We had lunch at the PNC Arena and heard from Jeff Merritt, Executive Director at Centennial Authority (owner of the PNC Arena building) and also from Crystal Warf, Director of Arena Marketing.   Crystal talked to us about how events are scheduled and planned and which events are coming soon to the PNC Arena.  After lunch we went to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh.   The museum is very large and newly redone with many interesting and engaging exhibits for all ages to enjoy.  After the museum we headed back to Cary.  It was a long and busy day, but I enjoyed learning so much that I didn’t know about the Cary and Raleigh area Cultural Arts.  My favorite part was getting to see the Hurricanes Hockey Team locker room and the large Hurricanes logo on the floor, that was really cool!  The Canes players NEVER step on the eye, they always walk around it…for good luck of course!

Community Service with Leadership Cary

Leadership Cary Community Service Day

Leadership Cary Community Service Day

A few years ago I had the opportunity to work the Salvation Army Toy Shop with my Cary-Kildaire Rotary ClubThe Toy Shop is the ‘final stage’ of the Angel Tree Project for the Salvation Army.  Volunteers gather at the large warehouse in Raleigh to help distribute gifts to the parents who have applied to be on the Angel Tree.  This is always such a busy day, filled with excitement (seeing the parents pick out toys for their children) and emotional (seeing the needs of others in our community and the gratitude of the parents).

Toy Shop Salvation Army

Toy Shop Salvation Army

This year I was pleased to work the Toy Shop with Leadership Cary.  Thursday was our Community Service Day, so we met at the Chamber and took a bus to the warehouse in downtown Raleigh.  We were for 5 hours helping parents through the Toy Shop(picking out 2 toys per child), gathering their bags from the donation center and spinning the wheel with hopes of winning a brand new bike!  The bikes in Raleigh are donated by Triangle Spokes Group, this makes the 8th year in a row that this group has partnered with The Salvation Army.  This year the goal was to give away 500 bikes and helmets.

Bikes for Triangle Spokes Group

Bikes for Triangle Spokes Group

The Toy Shop for The Salvation Army takes place over 3 days, the days begin early and go till later in the afternoon, with several hundred families coming through.  Our Leadership Cary group worked in all different parts of the Toy Shop, some filling orders in the back, while others helped to carry bags to cars, and yet more helped with parents as they shopped in the Toy Shop.  The day went fast and I was able to help about 5-7 families an hour.  I got soooooooooo excited when one of my families would win a bike!  Jumping and shouting because you know that is going to make a child so happy for Christmas!   After the we finished our shift of work at the Toy Shop, we boarded the bus and returned to the Cary Chamber.  During lunch we were able to hear several speakers talk who represent many of the nonprofit groups in Cary.  It was a very special day and I enjoyed it so much!  Many thanks to Christie Moser for organizing the whole day and for being the fearless leader for Leadership Cary (hosted by the Cary Chamber of Commerce).

Aware Senior Care

And a shout-out to Smith & Smith, CPA client, Tim Murray.  Tim and his wife, Gina, are making a difference in our community with their business, Aware Senior Care.  They offer companion care, personal care, education & consultation, plus live-in and 24/7 care for their clientsAware Senior Care offers a guarantee with their personal and quality caregiving services.  Their motto is “Guiding Your Way.  Live Well at Home”.   Tim stopped by to see Blake and dropped off one of the care-bags that they are using as part of their marketing materials.

Leadership Cary Tour of The Umstead Hotel

This year I FINALLY have the pleasure of participating in the Cary Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Cary!  I’ve been wanting to do this program for years and it has finally worked out to where I can participate and represent Smith & Smith, CPA!  As defined by the Cary Chamber: “Leadership Cary is designed for area businesspeople that will soon be area leaders and helps to ensure that there is a talented pool of leadership for our future.  Participants will learn about the economic, social, cultural and political faces of the community from the leaders of today.”  The program runs from November till April and involves about 2 meetings per month.

Yesterday was my first session (I missed the ropes course in November as I as in Maine).  Our session yesterday was on Economic Development and was held at SAS Campus in Cary.   The day involved hearing from local economic leaders such as Joe Milazzo of Regional Transportation Alliance, Skip Hill of Highwoods Properties, Kyle Greer of the Cary Chamber and many more leaders.  We were treated to lunch at The Umstead, oh the food was SOOOOOOOOOOOO good!  We ended the day with a tour of The Umstead, what a fantastic place for Cary to have!  I enjoyed the Leadership Cary Economic Session and learned a lot about Cary, like why companies choose to come here, what makes them stay and what things we need to plan and prepare for in the future for Cary to continue to be an amazing place to live work and play!  Our next Leadership Cary session is December 18th and it is all about Community Service!
