The Gifting Tree for Town of Cary

The Gifting Tree 2016

The Gifting Tree 2016

Happy December!  It is time for the Annual Town of Cary Gifting Tree Project!  Once again, Smith & Smith, CPA is participating in this event and we went downtown Cary last week to decorate our Christmas tree.  I LOVE our location this year, we are right at the corner of Academy and Chatham Street in the heart of downtown Cary!  We are at the traffic light right across from Ashworth Drugs.  Our tree is a little different this year and is decorated with patriotic spirit as a reversed American Flag.  Many thanks to my good friend, Lindsey Dishman, for helping me come up with the idea!  I spray painted the top of the tree white and the bottom of the tree blue (we won’t talk about what my hands looked like once that was done!!).  Then I used red ribbon and bows for the top of the tree (for the stripes on the flag) and huge white snowflake ornaments (bought in Savannah, GA) for the white stars on the flag on the bottom of the tree.  I also have new solar lights on the tree to light it up at dark.  Please take a few minutes to use this LINK to vote for our tree. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/cqhnpy9  It is one vote per email, so you only have to vote once!  The winning tree with the MOST votes will get $500 for the charity of their choice!  We will be supporting Life Experiences again this year as our charity of choice!  So please VOTE!

Life Experiences Annual Christmas Party

Matt playing Santa for Life Experiences

Matt playing Santa for Life Experiences

Speaking of Life Experiences, last night was their Annual Christmas Party.  It is always so much fun and an event that my family looks forward to each year.  It is a covered dish dinner party and all of the sweet employees trade names with each other and swap gifts.   One of them gets to dress up as Santa Claus too and passes out all of the gifts.  This year Santa was played by Matt.  He was so happy and you can see the big smile on his face!  Trent and Mark helped to pass out the gifts too.  It is so important to me so see our children involved with helping and loving others.  During the party, Mary Madenspacher, Executive Director, passed the microphone around the room and everyone got a chance to introduce themselves and their families.  It is so sweet to hear them tell how much Life Experiences means to them and sometimes they say really funny things too!   I am so honored to serve at the Board President for Life Experiences this year.  Here is a great photo of our Board Members at the party last night.  Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex for helping me shop for this beautiful sparkly silver sweater!  They have tons of great holiday wear so check them out for your upcoming Christmas & Holiday parties!!!!!!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get a discount with your purchase!

Why I LOVE our Clients at Smith & Smith, CPA

Oranges for CPA office

Oranges for CPA office

Everyone always ask “Oh don’t you just hate tax season since you are so busy!?!”  and the truth is NO, we don’t hate it at all.  Now don’t get me wrong, we ARE BUSY and it is kinda crazy in here, but the pure fact that we have REALLY awesome clients makes it so much easier to get through this time of year!  Just check out this fresh bag of oranges that one of our clients brought in the other day!  Nothing is as good as a fresh orange!  We have also had several of our referral clients bring in breakfast and coffee, what a great way to start the day!   Not to mention, Blake has received some really nice emails from clients, thanking him for our hard work, professional manner and friendly service.   Check out this one email he got this week!

“Hi Blake, once again, thank you very much for doing my taxes this year.  Your firm is just amazing and you do a fantastic professional job.  I enjoy working with you.”

And a special thanks to Serendipity Cafe, one of our restaurant clients located in downtown Cary, for bringing us lunch today! YUMMY-YUM!!!!  By far one of my MOST FAVORITE places in downtown Cary to eat!   We all got to order one of our fresh made sandwiches.  What a great lunch for a Friday afternoon to kick off the weekend!  We ordered: The Hot Turkey Melt, Crown Club, Reuben and Tried & True!  Who is ready for lunch today!?!  WE ARE!!

So how about ONE MORE food post to cap off this blog for the day!!?!  My little guy, Mark, had to create a business for his kindergarten class last week and bring items to sell.  It was their “Economy Day”.   So he decided to sell brownies and lemonade.  We borrowed a lemonade stand from our neighbor from him to use at school, and well, long story short, the brownies I ‘attempted’ to make at home went right in the trash!  (don’t ask!!!)  So who else do you call when you need the BEST Brownies in town!?!  Life Experiences!!!!!  They have the BEST bakery in town, staffed by adults with disabilities and their brownies are made with LOVE and so good! So those are the brownies that Mark proudly sold at his lemonade and brownie stand last week.  🙂   Get an order today!

Music for TAP and Flags for Rotary

Happy Friday!  Not only is it Friday…but it is Friday the 13th AND a FULL MOON!  How often does that happen?

Yesterday I had the pleasure of having a delicious lunch with my friend, Maura Silverman at Dorry’s Downtown Deli in beautiful downtown Cary.  Maura is the Founder and Executive Director for TAP Unlimited, Triangle Aphasia Project Unlimited.  I met Maura a few years ago through a mutual friend who has Aphasia and our paths have crossed several other times through various networking groups.  Maura is very passionate about helping people with Aphasia and educating their family and friends on ways to effectively communicate with them.  TAP Unlimited has their “signature event” coming up in a few weeks on Saturday, June 27th, at Cypress Manor.  The evening event will feature a special evening of life music by The Jason Adamo Band, cocktail hour, a performance by the TAP Choral Group, Silent Auction, Balloon Pop and Wine Wall!  Tickets can be purchased online HERE and all proceeds from this event will help benefit TAP patients throughout the Triangle area.  Sounds like such a fun evening and I hope you can make plans to attend!  And our lunch at Dory’s was very good too (fresh food and made to order)!  Thanks to Dorry’s for being a sponsor of our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club 28th Annual Pig Pickin’ in the Park this past weekend too! My year as Club President of the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club is coming to an end very soon…been such a fantastic year!  Last night I had the pleasure of trading Rotary club flags with Chris Heaney from the Gulf Breeze Rotary Club in Florida (a breakfast club with over 100 club members!!!).  Chris is a Captain in the US Navy and works in the Navy Recruiting Region East.  He was visiting the Raleigh area for a special Navy installation service and took time to visit our club for dinner and a make-up.  I’ve had the opportunity to trade Rotary Flags several times this year and it has been a highlight for me for sure!  Chris was very nice and said he enjoyed hearing about the success of our signature event, Pig Pickin’ in the Park, as his club does a similar fundraising event.  Thanks for stopping by Chris and for the open invitation to visit the Gulf Breeze Rotary Club!

Thanks so much to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriends Closet for styling me in this colorful summer blouse!  MGC has tons of great items for your summer wardrobe and all of the shoes, jewelry and accessories you need to match!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com and get 10% off your purchase!

Have a GREAT weekend and a VERY Happy Father’s Day to my daddy, Michael Fleenor, to my father-in-law, Bob Smith, to my husband, Blake Smith and Grandfathers, William Lawhorne, Jack Smith, and Ray Snyder.

Beautimous Beads downtown Cary

Beautimous Beads downtown Cary

This past weekend was a whirlwind of crazy events, I would try to tell you how it all went, but I don’t know if I could really do it justice!  Just know this…it included a Shark Tank Party at our good friend’s house (thanks Tia & Ethan…their cuz was on the show and he got a DEAL! YEA JASON!!!), 2 soccer games, a birthday party, visit to the park, a 5k race downtown Raleigh, downtown Cary Halloween Festival, lunch at Moe’s, Halloween spooky trail in Morrisville, a play by Together on Center Stage in downtown Holly Springs, beer & game of pool with friends, a Rotary picnic, Sunday worship service and a movie at Koka Booth!  And you have to wonder why Blake was so tired on Sunday evening!  But that is October and that was ONE CRAZY weekend!  Town of Cary had their Howlin’ Good Halloween events on Saturday and it was tons of fun!  Blake and the boys went along with me, plus our adorable neighbor, Lisa-Gray, and a few other kiddos from around the neighborhood (Lisa-Gray likes to travel with a pack of kiddos….God Bless her…..)

Graceful Expressions Dance Education downtown Cary

Graceful Expressions Dance Education downtown Cary

Part of downtown Cary was blocked off and featured a really fun carnival area sponsored by The Heart of Cary Association and local businesses.  The kids had a blast going from table to table and trying their luck at different games to win prizes (candy of course).  I was thrilled to see several Smith & Smith, CPA business clients down there!  Here is a picture of Blake with Bridgette, owner of Beautimous Beads, a great gift shop and very unique bead store, located in Ashworth Village.  Excellent place for those much-needed upcoming holiday gifts!  The boys were very well behaved in her store, hence whey they got to get in the picture.

Title Boxing Club downtown Cary

We also ran into April Schweitzer, Director at Graceful Expressions Dance Education, also a client of Smith & Smith, CPA and located in downtown Cary.  April had a super cute booth and was selling some of their retired dance costumes for a great deal!  Perfect for any little girl to use in her dress-up box!  Visiting April and seeing all of the costumes brought back memories of my childhood ballet dancing days…long ago of course! One of our other favorite things downtown Cary was the Title Boxing Club booth.  Max McGee, the General Manager, was there and they had a punching bag set-up along with a prize wheel and these SUPER HUGE boxing gloves!  Check out Blake and the boys wearing them!  How fun!  The kids had fun putting the gloves on and posing for pictures.

Together on Center Stage

Together on Center Stage

After the downtown Cary events, I jutted across town to the Holly Springs Cultural Arts Center to see my dear friend, Lorrie.  Her sweet son, Seth, was playing the role of Elvis in the Together on Center Stage theatrical play, The Magical Harmonies of Lifestro.  I LOVE going to see Seth in these plays and he always does such a fantastic job!  He looked just like Elvis up there with his big black wig, guitar and flashy belt!  Together on Center Stage was created by Alan Rosen and serves the purpose of providing performing arts to all people, regardless of their level of experience or abilities.

Lorrie & Becca

I knew several of the other actors in the play from volunteering over at Life Experiences in Cary.  So proud of Lorrie and Todd (her hubby) for getting Seth involved with Together on Center Stage, he really SHINES when he is up there!  Lorrie and I go way back to my early years in Cary and she’s a very treasured friend to me!  Thanks so much for inviting me to the play and I look forward to the next one in May 2014!  Keep on playing your guitar too Seth, you bring so much LIGHT and LOVE to anyone who knows you!

Jumping back into work is never easy…especially after vacation!  But I would be foolish not to blog about two really fantastic ladies networking events from the month of July…even though today is August 1st (CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?!?!?)

TLPL in July

Both of these events were held on the SAME DAY…talk about a GREAT but LOOOONNNGGG DAY!  The first event was the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch, hosted by the lovely Carrie Peele of Blue Diamond Limo and held at North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh.  The speaker was Beth Briggs, Executive Director for NC Council for Women of the State of North Carolina Department of Administration.  Beth, a fellow Rotarian, was a very dynamic speaker and talked about the role of women in our economy.  Some of my favorite things she mentioned included:  “Coming to terms with your personal value and loving to love what you do”, she mentioned the grant programs available for women’s projects and used a fantastic quote from Eleanor Roosevelt “Do something that scares you everyday”.  I had a wonderful time at the luncheon (as always) and was pleased to meet Shannon Reeder, Managing Partner and Marketing Director of Charlie Goodnights Comedy Club in downtown Raleigh.  This was Shannon’s first time at TLPL, she was a guest of Lynn Shaw (TravelHost Magazine of the Triangle), and I think it is safe to say she had a wonderful time!

WBON Summer Social 2012

That evening was the second ladies networking event!  WBON of Cary held their Annual Summer Social at the NEW and LOVELY My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary!  WBON Board Member & Owner, Loiz Cozart, along with her staff of ladies and her daughter, Ashley, were our very gracious and wonderful hosts!  We also had a nice wine sampling from UnWined Wine Bar and food from EJ’s Soul Food, both located in downtown Cary.  We had a packed house of ladies (and a few guys) with over 60+ present!  We did a fun raffle with lots of great prizes donated by our members.  We raised over $400 for our scholarship fund that night too!

What a fantastic way to kick off the 2012-2013 WBON Year!

Have you met my friend Jimmy...Jimmy Choo!?!?

Thank you to ALL who helped make this event amazing!  It was a hot and sweltering evening, but one full of fun, friendships and new business deals in the making!  And CONGRATS to Lois and her girls with the new store in Cary too!!!  Go and support our WBON members and their businesses!!!!

With friends shopping at the Vestique Trunk Show at The Purple Polka Dot

So about a month or so ago I read a great story in the News and Observer (yes, I still totally love to read the newspaper) about this local online boutique, called Vestique, that was started by two girls who were friends at college. I checked out their store and totally fell in love! Then this past week Blake tells me that we have a potential new client coming in our office this week for a new client meeting and that their store name is Vestique. I was freaking out with excitement that 1) I was going to get to meet them and 2) that we could potentially pick them up as a client! So long story short, the girls, Morgan and Caroline, met with Blake and they liked what we have to offer clients at our accounting practice in Cary, so they signed on as a new client! Later in the week on Wednesday night I attend their trunk show at The Purple Polka Dot in downtown Cary. Such a great event and saw some of my other favorite girlfriends shopping there too! Here are the two main reasons that I love Vestique 1) Their clothes are totally trendy and each piece is unique 2) Affordable!!!!! I could go on and on with more reasons, but I’ll stop there. So like I said, I am going to really enjoy this relationship as our CPA office represents Vestique and as I spend my hard earned money on their amazing fashions! Thank you Vestique and welcome aboard!
