The Gifting Tree for Town of Cary

The Gifting Tree 2016

The Gifting Tree 2016

Happy December!  It is time for the Annual Town of Cary Gifting Tree Project!  Once again, Smith & Smith, CPA is participating in this event and we went downtown Cary last week to decorate our Christmas tree.  I LOVE our location this year, we are right at the corner of Academy and Chatham Street in the heart of downtown Cary!  We are at the traffic light right across from Ashworth Drugs.  Our tree is a little different this year and is decorated with patriotic spirit as a reversed American Flag.  Many thanks to my good friend, Lindsey Dishman, for helping me come up with the idea!  I spray painted the top of the tree white and the bottom of the tree blue (we won’t talk about what my hands looked like once that was done!!).  Then I used red ribbon and bows for the top of the tree (for the stripes on the flag) and huge white snowflake ornaments (bought in Savannah, GA) for the white stars on the flag on the bottom of the tree.  I also have new solar lights on the tree to light it up at dark.  Please take a few minutes to use this LINK to vote for our tree. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/cqhnpy9  It is one vote per email, so you only have to vote once!  The winning tree with the MOST votes will get $500 for the charity of their choice!  We will be supporting Life Experiences again this year as our charity of choice!  So please VOTE!

Life Experiences Annual Christmas Party

Matt playing Santa for Life Experiences

Matt playing Santa for Life Experiences

Speaking of Life Experiences, last night was their Annual Christmas Party.  It is always so much fun and an event that my family looks forward to each year.  It is a covered dish dinner party and all of the sweet employees trade names with each other and swap gifts.   One of them gets to dress up as Santa Claus too and passes out all of the gifts.  This year Santa was played by Matt.  He was so happy and you can see the big smile on his face!  Trent and Mark helped to pass out the gifts too.  It is so important to me so see our children involved with helping and loving others.  During the party, Mary Madenspacher, Executive Director, passed the microphone around the room and everyone got a chance to introduce themselves and their families.  It is so sweet to hear them tell how much Life Experiences means to them and sometimes they say really funny things too!   I am so honored to serve at the Board President for Life Experiences this year.  Here is a great photo of our Board Members at the party last night.  Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex for helping me shop for this beautiful sparkly silver sweater!  They have tons of great holiday wear so check them out for your upcoming Christmas & Holiday parties!!!!!!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get a discount with your purchase!

Historic Downtown Apex for Peak City Pig Fest

Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club at Peak City Pig Fest

Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club at Peak City Pig Fest

Over the weekend our family attended the Peak City Pig Fest, June 21-22 2013.  The event was held in downtown Apex and is hosted by the Apex Sunrise Rotary Club.  I was signed up to work the Rotary & Information booth from 2-4pm, so we went around 12:30pm to enjoy some of the food and festivities.  This is the second year for the Peak City Pig Fest and it has already grown to a HUGE event!  Historic downtown Apex is perfect for festivals and all of the stores & restaurants on Salem Street were open and welcoming the public in to shop & eat.

The event was FREE and family friendly with more than 15,000 people in attendance!  The Kansas City Barbecue Society, the nations’ leading BBQ sanctioning body, sanctions the Peak City Pig Fest.  Teams come from all over the country to compete for prize money for cooking chicken, ribs, beef brisket and pork.  Judging is conducted by KSBC certified BBQ judges, but there was also The Meat House People’s Choice Competition and awards, which gave the general public the opportunity to taste & vote for their favorites.

Awards include 1st-3rd with $500-$100 in cash prizes.  The event also featured a beer garden, cornhole tournament, vendors, food trucks, games & bounce house area for the kids (along with a really cool hockey court), plus pig races and live music.  The Peak City Pig Fest raises funds to support the community through various causes supported by the Rotary Foundation.  Some of the community organizations supported include the following: Western Wake Crisis Ministry, community crisis & financial aid, helping hand ministries for Apex & Holly Springs, and more.

I had a great time working the Rotary booth with my fellow Cary-Kildaire Rotarian, Kyle Smith.  We helped give out information about the event, made really cute ‘flying pigs’ with kids and also gave out information about all of the Rotary Club meetings in our Rotary District 7710.  My family had a fun time too!  Thanks to Apex Sunrise Rotary Club for putting on such a fantastic event!  I can’t wait till next year!  The boys really loved getting their picture made with the Pig Mascot from Backyard Bistro.  They also LOVED the shaved ice cream from one of the food trucks too!!!
