Valentine’s Day Daddy-Daughter Dance

Last night was the Annual Valentine’s Day Daddy-Daughter Dance at Chick-Fil-A Waverly Place in Cary.  Our Smith & Smith, CPA firm was proud to help sponsor this event by having a Valentine’s Day Craft for the families to make together.  The evening featured a reserved seated table for dinner at Chick-fil-a, followed by a limo ride over to the shopping center at Waverly Place and a map of all of the featured activities (face painting, photos, raffle prizes, etc.)  It was such a fun evening and they were very busy all night long with over 150 RSVP!  Our craft was a hand-print cutout and a tree with fingerprint heart apples!  It was a big hit with the little girls and they loved making one for their dad!  A big THANK YOU to Chick-fil-a Waverly Place for letting our firm be involved!  Here are some photos of the evening to share!

What in the World Does that Blog Title Mean???
Jug items

Funny story to share with you… Last week we were wrapping up our final notes on the GlobalRun4Water and Scott Rossi shared with us some of the items that were found in our water jug collections.  We had collection jugs at different places around town and were successful at collecting nearly $1,000 in dollars/coin donations!  Here is a picture of the random items that came from the collection jugs…a screw, sawed off penny and five foreign currency coins.

WBON of Cary has their Annual Holiday Gala & Scholarship Auction coming up quickly in a few weeks on Tuesday, November 13thfrom 5:30pm-7:30pm at Homewood Suites in Cary

Grace Li Wang art work

The WBON scholarship is nearly 11 years old and has been awarded to 19 women totaling $36,000 in funds that has been used towards furthering education, training and skills in their particular line of business.  I’ve made a nice new friend this year named Grace Li Wang.  She was the Town of Cary Lazy Daze Featured Artist for 2011 and I met her this year at the 2012 Lazy Daze event.  She has generously donated a lovely packet of her unique designs on note cards as an auction item.  I went by her house to pick up the gift and had a wonderful time talking with her.  She has a fantastic talent and calls her work “Art with a touch of Grace”.  Her work has been featured all over town, most remarkable to me at Stonehaven Jewelry Gallery in downtown Cary. Her work is sold at Southern Charm in Cary Towne Mall and also at Bull City Art and Frame Co.  Thank you Grace Li Wang for your donation to the WBON auction and for your new friendship!  She’ll be at the Lochmere Arts & Crafts show too on Saturday, November 10th.  Stop by to see (and purchase) her work!

Mother-Son Date Knight

Now to the “Mother Knight” part of my blog title…Earlier this week I took our boys to the Chick-fil-a Waverly Place for the Mother-Son Date KNIGHT!  We pulled up in the packed parking lot to witness a real life knight performance!  Three guys were dressed in full knight gear and were having a ‘battle of the wits’ right in front of us!  The boys loved it and the clash and clang of metal swords and shields was really exciting.

Knight Fight!

Once inside we found the whole right side of the restaurant decorated like a castle, complete with a bridge over an ‘alligator filled creek’ and a “Knighted Cow”.  We had a nice time eating with the table-side-service and the boys each brought me a bright red rose!  They did some cool kid crafts and we had a wonderful time talking about knights, bravery and what it means to be a hero.  Thank you Chick-fil-a Waverly Place for hosting such a fun event!  I even found & booked a magician from the event for Trent & Mark’s upcoming birthday party in November!

Summer Camp Lunch

Summer camp has always had a special place in my heart.  I grew up going to summer camp, worked at a summer camp in college and I look forward to the days when my kids can go to summer camp.

Chick-fil-a for The Corral

A few months ago I had the joy of getting to know the wonderful girls and leaders of The Corral Riding Academy in Cary, NC.  I’ve been able to participate in several events with them and I look forward to working with them and the girls for years to come.  The Corral has their summer camp going on for the last two weeks of July and they are looking for local businesses & organizations to help provide lunch to the girls.  I jumped at this opportunity and teamed up with Rob Dyer and Diane Curfman of Chick-fil-a Waverly Place for a co-sponsored lunch.  I went by Chick-fil-a Waverly Place on Monday and they loaded my car up with boxed lunches for 20 girls/volunteers!  The boxed lunches included a hot Chick-fil-a sandwich, bag of chips, a delicious cookie and a fresh cup of fruit.  I also took two jugs of their famous sweet tea!

The Corral girls summer camp

The girls were still working on their morning sessions when I arrived (learning the parts of the horse, working on care & maintenance of horses, etc.) so I took some time to walk around the farm and watch the girls in action.  What a wonderful summer camp opportunity for these girls and they were all having so much fun.   We had lunch together inside, WHEW, it was a hot day!  The girls then spent the rest of the afternoon doing chores on the farm and having small group sessions.  They were all very appreciative of lunch and I can’t thank Rob, Diane and the whole team of Chick-fil-a Waverly Place enough for their support of The Corral.  If your business or organization would like to work with The Corral or provide lunch to the girls one day this summer, reach out to them soon as the days are filling up fast!

Chicken and a Pig…A Cool Marketing Opportunity

I love to find a unique and cool marketing opportunity, especially one that involves the community and kids!  Our family has been a regular visitor to the Chick-fil-a at Waverly Place in Cary, NC  for well over a year now.

A cool marketing opportunity with Chick-fil-a

They have “Family Night” on Tuesday nights, where a local business sponsors a kid-craft or activity for the evening and it’s a free opportunity for everyone to participate.  Diane Curfman, Sales Manager and Deidre Lopez, Marketing Director, are a wonderful part of this Chick-fil-a marketing/promotion team and work together to make sure that each Tuesday night is a fun experience for all.  I was able to get Smith & Smith, CPA on the schedule for Tuesday, February 28, 2012 as the Family Night business sponsor.  I wanted to be able to take full advantage of this cool marketing opportunity, so I started working weeks in advance.  I wanted our craft to be kid-friendly and fairly easy for all ages, but also wanted it to be a piece that the kids would keep for a long time and enjoy.  I also wanted to somehow tie-in our CPA firm and financial theme.  So I thought hand painted ceramic piggy banks would be a great idea!  I was lucky enough to find a good deal on ceramic piggy banks from Oriental Trading Company and they all arrived unbroken and in perfect condition.  I printed round-label stickers with our name & phone number and those went on the bottom of the piggy banks on the money stopper.

Kids painting piggys!

The Family Night is from 5:30pm-7:30pm.  I arrived shortly after 5:00pm to set-up and I had a table full of kids ready to paint at 5:15pm!  I had posted the news of this cool marketing opportunity on my some of our social media outlets, so I was pleased to have some of my friends bring their kids by to paint (thanks Shelly and Heather!!)  I was also pleasantly surprised to see one of our business clients there with her family, April SchweitzerArtistic Director of Graceful Expressions Dance Education.  April’s kids were excellent little painters and were very happy of their cute creations.  I connected April with Deidre as the Chick-fil-a Family Night is a cool marketing opportunity and I could really see Graceful Expressions being the sponsor one night.

Kids & Piggy Banks

I also had a chance to see a business referral friend that I hadn’t seen in years.  Justin Vahrenburg, Small Business Sales & Sales Consultant, for Verizon Wireless, was there for dinner with his lovely wife and their two children.  Justin and I met years ago through a Business Network International (BNI) referral group.  I also had the opportunity to talk with several other families throughout the evening, some of which were fellow ECU Alumni Pirates!  YEA! I can’t say enough positive things about this cool marketing opportunity!  It is wonderful for small business owners as well as non-profit groups.  My rotary club, Cary-Kildaire Rotary, sponsored a night last year and will be sponsoring again on May 1st.  Thank you Chick-fil-a!

Piggy Bank Painting

Hard to believe that today is the last day of February 2012, and it is also LEAP DAY!  We are down to just about 2 weeks to go before corporate tax returns are due and about 47 days left to file your personal return (or get an extension  completed).  .  Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary is never too busy to help a small business owner with their accounting/tax needs.  We welcome referrals!  Please note that the months of Jan-April 2012 will be very busy around here and we’ll be working 7-days a week with 12-15+hour days to get everyone taken care of in a timely manner.  Please get your 2011 taxes in as soon as you can.  I’d also love to have a few new reviews posted for us under the name business name, Smith & Smith, CPA on Google.  Please click HERE to write a review (click the RED box that says “Write a Review“)  Thanks so much!   Visit our website: http://www.smithandsmithcpa.com/ for more information.

Promote Your Group with a Scarecrow!

“Scare-Tax-Less”

For the second year in a row now, our CPA firm has competed in the Annual Scarecrow contest that is held by the local Chick-fil-A Waverly Place.  This is a great event that is used to promote your group or your business.  The rules and guidelines are fairly simple; you just have to fill out the entry form, turn it in on time, and then build a creative & eye-catching scarecrow.   You want to create a scarecrow that has good visibility and signage that will work towards helping promote your group’s message or the type of business you are representing.  For example, the scarecrow for our CPA firm is decorated in fake money, big GOLD $$$ sign classes and is holding a tax return.  He also has a sign that mentions our company name and website and his name is “Scare Tax-Less”.

Cary-Kildaire Rotary "Scare-Polio-Away"

This year our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club also built a scarecrow for the contest.  Since Rotary is about many different things, we decided to build a scarecrow that would focus on the “END POLIO NOW” campaign.  We ordered a t-shirt that has the message for Polio on the front and added a red wig (since the color for Polio awareness is red).  We also included signage for our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club and listed our website & weekly meeting location.

Promote Your Group or business with a scarecrow

This is a very simple and easy community awareness & PR opportunity.  I had mentioned it last week to another friend who owns a business and she got creative and built a scarecrow to represent her business as well!  Way to go Christine!  Your “SPA-CROW” is looking great!  I also saw where one of our clients has a scarecrow there too!  This thing is really catching on as a great way to promote your group or business!

The scarecrows are currently lined up all the way around Chick-fil-A Waverly Place and will be on display Oct. 24-Nov. 11th.  The local community is invited to stop by and VOTE for their favorite business & non-profit scarecrows on Saturday, Nov. 5th

A Queen Affair, LLC

There are cash donation prizes for the non-profits (if our club wins it will go towards our Rotary End Polio Now) and the business prizes include catering services!  Last year we won 1st prize, so I’m anxious to see how Scare-Tax-Less does this year!

Are you looking for a great way to promote your group or your local business?  Consider doing some events with the Chick-fil-a Waverly Place, they offer a Tuesday Night Family Night and invite local business owners/non-profits to be the presenter each week.  Click HERE to find out more.

Danny's Bar-B-Que

Also remember that this is National End Polio Now week and a local restaurant, Danny’s Bar-B-Que, has agreed to give 10% of their sales this week to the Polio Cause!  All you have to do is eat at one of their three locations (Cary, Morrisville and Durham) and ask your server to be counted towards the donation for Rotary’s Polio project.  Thanks so much Danny!  You have to eat somewhere this week, so make it to Danny’s BBQ and help END POLIO NOW!

Keep in mind that our CPA firm in Cary is growing and currently taking on new clients.  We’ve changed our firm name to Smith & Smith, CPA, P.C. as Blake recently received his CPA license!  We are expanding into the office next door and we are hiring more staff.  We also have a BRAND NEW website coming soon, so stay tuned!  Even with lots of great growth and changes taking place, we are never too busy to help a small business owner with their accounting/tax needs.  We welcome referrals!  PS:  I am still looking for good support for the We Build People Campaign for the YMCA.

 Fun, Food and Waverly Place!

I love my job!  Not only because I work with great guys but also because I get to meet, greet and EAT with lots of people too!  This week has certainly proven to be a full week of networking, marketing and EATING for me (thank goodness I have a membership at Life Time Fitness to stay in shape!!)

I met with two local bankers from BB&T on Tuesday, Linda Shirley (VP of Business Services Officer) and Bill Smith (Senior VP City Executive) to talk about business and client opportunities.  I treated them to lunch at one of my clients, Tangerine Café.  This was a first time for both of them at Tangerine Café (a well-kept YUMMY secret in the Cary area). I always order my food spicy, a level 4/5 stars on their ‘spicy chart’.  I’ll never forget the time I took another friend, Gabe Stepanic of CODA Financial, there and I ordered a 5/5 stars and I CRIED through my entire lunch with Gabe, it was good but SPICY!

We had our WBON Board meeting on Tuesday night at Stonewood Grill and Tavern.  Thanks to Heather Sefried of Nirvelli Day Spa, our WBON Secretary for this year, for selecting them for dinner and for pre-setting our Board meetings for the rest of the year at different eateries around town.

Waverly Place

Kids at Waverly Place Promenade

Wednesday night was a fun event in Cary held at the NEW Waverly Place, it was called “Preview the Promenade”.  I can’t believe how much work they have done up there!  The place looks amazing and I know our family is very excited about the new changes and opportunities that are coming to Cary from this renovation.  My kids loved the splash/playground the best.  GameTruck of the Triangle was also there with their HUGE gaming truck, check them out, they are a client and have hit the jackpot with a cool new business concept for this area!  We also stopped by the Chick-fil-a Waverly Place booth to spin the wheel and win a prize!   We go there nearly every Tuesday night for their “FAMILY NIGHT” where kids meals are only $.99.   My Rotary Club, Cary-Kildaire Rotary, will be the host for the Family Night on Oct. 11th.  Stop by and see us!

So tell me, have you ever been to Tangerine Café?  How about Stonewood Grill & Tavern?  I know Nirvellia Day Spa has a huge following in this area, what is your favorite service from them?  Did you attend the Preview the Promenade at Waverly?  Any other big Chick-fil-a Waverly Place fans out there besides me?
