Women of Western Wake & Lifetime Achievement Award

Today I had the pleasure of attending an event that I go to EVERY SINGLE YEARThe Women of Western Wake, presented by Cary Magazine.

This event is held at the end of October at the gorgeous Umstead Hotel & Spa in Cary.   This year marked the 10th year for the awards luncheon and I was honored to sit at a table with my friends in the Cary Women’s Giving Network.   We decided to all go in together and sponsor a table so we could have the opportunity to tell other ladies about our group!  Over the years, many of the ladies in our Cary Women’s Giving Network have been featured as the award winners for The Women of Western Wake and this year was no different.  But it was a VERY SPECIAL year as our very own, Sheila Ogle, was selected as the FIRST EVER Lifetime Achievement Award Winner in honor of the 10 Year Anniversary!

Cary Women’s Giving Network

Needless to say, Sheila was totally shocked!   This recognition is very much deserved for Sheila and it was a gorgeous huge swirly and heavy award!   We all laughed as the award colors looked perfect with her dress and shoes (see picture below!)

The 2017 Women of Western Wake are as follows: Nicole Dozier, Leigh Duque, Gayle Greene, Fara Palumbo and Miss Vatinet.  Congrats to them all!  Enjoy the photos from today’s luncheon.

Cary Women’s Giving Network, Time with Wells Fargo and Some Early Halloween Fun!

It has been a busy week and it is only Wednesday!  This last week of October has really gone fast!

Cary Women’s Giving Network

Cary Women's Giving Network

Cary Women’s Giving Network

On Monday I joined the other ladies of the Cary Women’s Giving Network for our monthly gathering.  We had a delicious lunch together at the Matthews House (Bistro Lunch every Monday) and hosted Ellen Fort from the Lucy Daniels Center as our guest speaker.   Ellen is just a few months into her new role with the LDC, so she is still getting her ‘feet wet’ within the organization.  We had about 15 women in attendance for lunch and a few visitors.  The Cary Women’s Giving Network is part of the Cary Community Foundation and as associate with the North Carolina Community Foundation.  It was a nice cool crisp Fall day, so we took a group picture outside in the gardens of the Matthews House.  I love this group and the work we do in our community!   Thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in the warm tunic sweater.  It had great Fall colors and my necklace was something that I won at the Life Experiences Auction in September.

Lunch with Wells Fargo

Wells Fargo Lunch and Learn

Wells Fargo Lunch and Learn

One of the best things about the women’s network that I just mentioned, are the relationships that form within the group.  I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Pam Keene, Vice President of Business Banking with Wells Fargo, through both the GWGN and other groups over the past 11 years.  Pam and her co-worker, Mike Lynch (SBA Lending for Wells Fargo) hosted lunch for our CPA firm this afternoon.  Part of Pam’s job includes meeting with clients and referral partners to make sure there is a strong relationship and that the lines of communication are open and clear.

They brought lunch from City Barbeque into Smith & Smith, CPA and we had a very productive lunch meeting learning more about the products and services of Wells Fargo.   We share several mutual clients with Wells Fargo and having Pam and Mike to use as a resource and a reference is a huge asset for us!  We want to make sure clients needs are taken care of and by having a direct contact, it just makes everything run smooth on both sides!   Our entire office was able to sit-in during the “lunch and learn”.  Thank you to Pam and Mike for reaching out to us and for the delicious lunch!

Woodhaven Fall Festival

And now a cute little post-weekend photo!  Halloween started early for the Smith crew last weekend.  We attended the Annual Fall Family Festival at Woodhaven Baptist Church, located just a short distance from our house.  I think this is the 7th or 8th year in a row that we have attended.  The kids love it as they get to dress in their costumes, play in the bounce house, enjoy all kinds of games with prizes and have a blast.   We love it because it is outside and free!   They offer a yummy hotdog dinner and it’s a great family-fun atmosphere.

Family Fun at Woodhaven

They do a trunk-or-treat at the end of the evening and have all kinds of cars & trucks decorated.  It is so fun to see each year!  And while you can’t see them very good in this picture, all of the Smith kids (Trent, Connor, Mark and Bailey) are using the Smith & Smith, CPA Halloween bags that we purchased a few years ago.  They were part of a marketing project and I still have a few left over, so the kids carried them to collect candy and goodies at the event.  They are nice durable bags and have our name & logo along with Trick-or-Treat Safety Tips on the side.   And yes, they got lots of good candy!  Thanks to Woodhaven for hosting this event each year!

tic tocTonight I am off to see the new Tic Toc Escape Room in downtown Raleigh!  ShopLocalRaleigh is hosting a bloggers event there tonight….stay tuned to the blog tomorrow to see how it went…and if we escaped!

And the Winners Are…Cary Women’s Giving Network Announces Their 2014 Grant Awards Recipients

Earlier this week I attended the Cary Women’s Giving Network Grant Awards Luncheon at the Matthew’s House in downtown Cary.

Gail, Beth, Jennifer and Sheila of the Cary Women's Giving Network

Gail, Beth, Jennifer and Sheila of the Cary Women’s Giving Network

The Cary Women’s Giving Network is under the Cary Community Foundation (part of the North Carolina Community Foundation) and is made up of women of all ages, backgrounds, careers and life experiences in the Cary area.  The main focus is to bring together resources to those in need in our community.  The Cary Women’s Giving Network was formed in 2011 and provides grants to nonprofits serving Cary, under the direction of its full membership.  I have been involved with this group for about a year and really enjoy all of the women involved and love the mission!

I was pleased to help serve this year on the 2014 Grants Committee, which was led by Sarah Perkins (Grants Chair).  We met back in early-April and had read through about 24 grant applications from local non-profits in the Cary/Wake County area.  During our meeting we discussed each application and narrowed them down to our top eight and then presented those eight to the CWGN membership for consideration/final selection.  It was such a tough process as all 24 groups had missions that they were very passionate about and serve very specific needs in our community.  We had a total of $17,000 to give in grant awards and selected FOUR finalists.

The finalists as well as ALL of the applicants were invited to the Grant Awards Luncheon on Tuesday.  We had a delicious lunch (cheers to the chef at the Matthews House) and I enjoyed helping greet all of the ladies as they arrived.  Sheila Ogle (CWGN Co-Founder and owner of the Matthews House) started off the program with a welcome, she was followed Jennifer Robinson (also a CWGN Co-Founder and Cary Town Council) who introduced the two speakers.

Senator Tamara Barringer, NC State Senate, District 17, gave a powerful talk on Foster Care and Children’s Advocacy in NC and included some of her very personal life stories.  Then Cary Councilwoman, Gale Adcock, spoke about Access to Health Care Across NC and gave some staggering statistics!   Both of these ladies were well-spoken and were very ‘real’ with the audience about what is happening in NC and how we can make changes together for the BETTER.  Sarah Perkins led the Presentation of the 2014 Grant Awards and each recipient was asked to share about their organization and how the funds would be used.  The four recipients were: Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, $5,000 (Providing weekend backpacks to 23 kids in a Cary School for a whole year!  Each backpack includes 6 meals for that weekend);

BEGINNINGS for Parents of Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, $5,000 (Will provide ear molds for hearing aids for children under 5 years old); The Mariposa School for Children with Autism, $5,000 (will provide a new observation room for parents); and CASA (Community Alternatives for Supportive Abodes), $2,000, (Will provide funding for local Cary citizens who are in housing crisis).  It was wonderful to hear from each recipient and they were all so grateful for the gifts from the Women’s Giving Network of Cary.

I want to say thank you to Katie Crumpler, Regional Associate for the NC Community Foundation for all of her support and guidance to the WGNC.  What a wonderful luncheon and thank you to the Matthews House for hosting (a client of Smith & Smith, CPA).   Thank you also to My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary (and downtown Apex) for dressing me in the Kate Spade Striped Blaise Dress!  It was perfect for the event and the gold buttons down the back added a bit of a surprise to the dress!   MGC has a TON of great spring and summer dresses!  Stop by and tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get 10% of your total purchase!

Corporate Games, First Year Teachers and Women’s Giving

Alisa & Becca

Alisa & Becca

In late 2013 we started hearing this buzz about the Corporate Games of Cary…it was being talked about at the Cary Chamber Business Expo and also at other Cary Chamber events.  Last week I had the opportunity to learn more about it.  Fit & Able Productions, Inc. is producing the event along with several other community businesses and sponsors.  The owners of Fit & Able, Alisa & Travis Wright Colopy (mother and son team) hosted a Lunch & Learn last week at the Cary Chamber called “Regifting Your Fitness”.  During the luncheon Alisa talked about the importance of being physically fit and healthy and how the Corporate Games of Cary were going to serve as a yearlong mini-Olympics for Cary businesses, families and friends. I’m looking forward to having Smith & Smith, CPA participate!

Cary Chamber Education Committee

Cary Chamber Education Committee

The Cary Chamber also hosted the monthly Education Committee Meeting last week.  I used to be a regular attendee on this committee but then had a conflict each month with another group, so I’ve missed being able to attend the Education Committee.  Last week lunch was sponsored by Huntington Learning Center and we had food from Patrick Jane’s Gourmet Pizza Bar.  During the meeting we created an assembly line to assemble the First Year Teacher Awards for Western Wake County teachers.  These awards (an apple etched inside of a glass tower) are given each year on behalf of the Cary Chamber and the Education Committee to FIRST YEAR teachers…not first year in their school, but FIRST YEAR ever!

We know that teaching is a tough, challenging but rewarding profession and this is our small way of encouraging them and saying thank you.  Kuddos to Allison Wrenn, Director of Finance & Education for the Cary Chamber on having all of the gift bag items so organized and ready to be assembled.  It went really well!  We then divided up all of the awards/gifts (there were over 80 bags!!!) and delivered them to all of the schools.  I took the gifts to Farmington Woods Elementary school, very close to our office.  Congrats to all of those teachers!

Cary Women's Giving Network

Cary Women’s Giving Network

And a very-late-mention of the Cary Women’s Giving Network…we had a post-holiday social on December 27th that was hosted by Virginia Anthony & Sheila Ogle at Sheila’s house in downtown Cary.   I am so proud to be part of this wonderful group of women and love the work that we do in the community.  It was a very nice event and I’m looking forward to a fun and busy year with the Women’s Giving Network in 2014.  Would love to have you join us if interested!   It’s about local women operating together to bring resources to the needy in our community.

Thanks as always to My Girlfriend’s Closet of downtown Cary and downtown Apex for dressing me with such style! I got this fur vest there for Christmas and the yellow silk embezzled top was a selection by Lois.  Both stores still have tons of great winter items…be sure to ask about their fleece leggings and mention Beccasblog.com for a 10% discount.

Our Smith & Smith, CPA firm in Cary is growing and we are excited about 2014.  We are taking on new clients and we’d love to work with YOU!  Please check out our website for more information  http://www.smithandsmithcpa.com  We are never too busy to help a small business owner with their accounting/tax needs.  We welcome referrals!  Thank you to all of our amazing referral partners and community supporters!  Here’s to a GREAT 2014!

Giving, Loving and Supporting Our Community

Carla, Becca and Dr. Brolin

Carla, Becca and Dr. Brolin

All too often we get so wrapped-up in just work, work, work.  We get all consumed about our families, our kids, who-is-supposed-to-go-where-when-and-what-time…we forget to pause and think about others in life who are struggling or not as fortunate as us.  So Thursday was a very nice day of honoring those in our community who are working hard to improve the lives of many in our area.  Carla Liberatore, Vice President of The Liberatore Stroud Group, invited me to attend the Cary Women’s Giving Network Grant Awards Luncheon.  The CWGN is a member of the North Carolina Community Foundation and is an organization of local women operating together to bring resources to the needy in the community.

Corral Riding Academy was awarded a grant

The group was formed in 2011 and this awards luncheon marked their very first year in awarding grants to non-profits serving Cary, under the direction of its full membership.  The luncheon was held at the beautiful Matthew’s House (a client of Smith & Smith, CPA) in downtown Cary.  The three grants awarded totaled $15,000 and were presented to The Corral Riding Academy, The Carying Place and Dorcas Ministries.  I love all three of these non-profits and it was honestly hard to hold back tears as each one took the podium and told about their organization and how the money would be used (okay, you know me, I’m a crybaby, so I didn’t hold back the tears).

It was wonderful to see so many of my fellow Cary women there at the luncheon, many of whom I respect and look-up to as role models (that would be you Judy Fourie, Sheila Ogle, Michelle Muir, Deidre Jersey, Cathy Burns and Liza Weidel).  Thank you so much Carla for inviting me and I look forward to working with the Cary Community Foundation this year!   And congrats to all the grant award winners and kudos for the work you do in our community.

For the evening hours, I ventured over to the NC State University Club for the WomenNC.org Local to Global’ dinner.  I attended this event last year, and had a very nice time.  WBON of Cary is a proud sponsor, so Susan Pruskin (WBON Treasure) and I were there to represent WBON.  We had a nice booth in the lobby and our candy-buffet drew lots of attention.  We were able to talk with attendees about our upcoming March Charity Fashion Show & Fundraiser (that will benefit The Carying Place this year).  WomenNC.org Founder & Executive Director, Beth Dehghan, is the owner of Village Cleaners, a good friend of mine,  and also a client of Smith & Smith, CPA.

WBON Supporting WomenNC.org

WBON Supporting WomenNC.org

The program this year featured 5 students (Yolanda, Brian, Marzia, Molly and Elisabeth) and they each took a turn at the podium talking about their program study and presenting their research.  They will travel to New York in March to attend the United Nations 57th Annual “Commission on the Status of Women”, where they will present their research to people from 200+ countries and over 400 NGO’s.  Thank you Beth for inviting us to participate!  We were also happy to have Shirin Mashhoon attend; she’s in the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club with Susan and me.  Again, wonderful work done by WomenNC.org to bring awareness of women’s human rights, equality and opportunity to the forefront and for their work engaging local young-adult college leaders.

And thanks as always to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet of downtown Apex & Cary for the lovely royal blue BCGBMaxazria dress!  It was a great fit for all of the box lifting with the WBON booth and for moving from event to event on Thursday.
