Rotary Leadership Institute for Zone 33 in Cary, NC

RLI with Rotary Friends

RLI with Rotary Friends

A few weekends ago I had the pleasure of attending the RLI Zone 33 Annual Meeting and New Faculty Training.  RLI stands for Rotary Leadership Institute and it is the leadership and training course for Rotarians.   I attended the first 3 parts of RLI several years ago before I became Club President of the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club, and even wrote about it in my blog.   One of my friends & mentors in Rotary, Leigh Hudson, asked me back in the Fall of 2015 if I would consider attending the New Faculty Training in January for Zone 33 (Maryland to SC) that was going to be held here in Cary, NC.

RLI Leadership Challenge

So of course I said YES, and I’m so glad I did!   The New Faculty Training lasted the entire weekend and taught different technique and styles that are used for facilitating a RLI Course.  I learned SO MUCH from the training!  I made new Rotary friends from other states, and learned about the different adult learning styles, which is really interesting!  I’m a I & IV style learner, here is the link if you want to learn more and find out which style you are.  The weekend conference also included an all day session on Saturday for Rotary club members who were taking RLI Courses in Part I, II and III.   Once you complete all 3 courses, you are then an RLI Graduate and qualified for the RLI Faculty Training.  RLI Faculty can facilitate a course anywhere in Zone 33.

So I can travel from Maryland to Virginia, Tennessee and the Carolinas and help with RLI classes.  I’m so excited to get started!  The event was held in Cary at the Hilton DoubleTree, a very nice property.  All of the faculty had dinner together on Saturday night at Tony’s Oyster Bar, a place I had not been too in a LONG time!  Thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex for dressing me for the whole RLI Faculty Training weekend!   Lois and her team have beautiful clothing for every style and shape of women!   They are having a BIG Jewelry sale this weekend with 20%-35% off!  Stop by and see them!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com and they will take EXCELLENT care of you!

Celebrating 20 Years in Business with Smith & Smith, CPA

The Smith & Smith, CPA family

The Smith & Smith, CPA family

Well….we MADE IT!!  Yesterday was the 20th Anniversary for Smith & Smith, CPA!  That means, 20 years ago, Robert G. (Bob) Smith, started a CPA firm here in Cary, NC.  And over the years it has changed locations several times to accommodate growth, changed names to reflect the growth and accomplishments and also added staff (most of whom are family).  We have also grown the business in both areas of our small businesses for monthly accounting work and tax returns for annual filings.

Bob started 20 years ago after he left the health care industry and ventured over into private accounting and tax.  He started in a very small, one-room office and had just part-time employees for the first 9 years.  I was his first full-time employee hire in 2004 and we are now in a 2,300 sqft office with 6 full-time employees!  It’s one thing to really like your job, but it’s another thing to really like your job AND like the people you work with, especially when they are family!   Alicia Angell was hired in 2012 as our first non-family hire, but we’ve grown to love her like family and always enjoy seeing her girls when they come by the office.  There are 7 ‘office kids’ here at Smith & Smith, CPA and they range from age 20 with the oldest (Avery) to age 4 with the youngest (Bailey).

Last night we had a big 20th ANNIVERSARY Celebration dinner at our house.  Everyone came and we had a great time looking back on old memories, making crazy office jokes, talking about our favorite work memories and giving Bob a quiz on ALL THINGS Smith & Smith, CPA.  He did really well at the quiz!

We ended the celebration with a homemade 20th Anniversary Cake and sang ‘HAPPY ANNIVERSARY’ to Bob (set to the tune of Happy Birthday) and let him blow out the 20th Anniversary Candles…well, you have to watch the video to see who ACTUALLY blew out the candles.  Click to watch the video below!

We’d like to say THANK YOU to all of our clients, friends, families and referral partners who have supported us through the years.  Cary is a WONDERFUL place to work and do business and we are so happy to be part of this community.   We are always open to new clients and appreciate your referrals.  Thank you again to Bob Smith for providing Smith & Smith, CPA as a safe and wonderful place to work.  We are providing for 4 families from this office and look forward to 20 more years in business serving our clients and our community!

Cheers to 20 Years in Business for Smith & Smith, CPA!

Rocking the Boat with Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club

Becca & Mary with ROTO

Becca & Mary with ROTO

I was recently installed as the new President for the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club.  We didn’t have a meeting in early July due to the 4th of July holiday, so my first ‘official’ meeting as Club President was last week on July 11th.  Our guest speaker had to reschedule, so instead of finding a new speaker, I just took the opportunity to speak to the club about my goals and hopes for the upcoming year.  My Sergeant at Arms, Mary Madenspacher, also took time to introduce “ROTO” to our club.  ROTO is the “Monkey on your Back”…also known as your REMINDER to bring a guest to a meeting! ROTO will pass around from member to member and the only way to pass him along, is to bring a guest with you!  Hopefully ROTO will help us increase visitors at our meetings and will lead to more members too.

I also brought the life jacket along too and mentioned that it will be at the meeting each week for anyone who is with me on “rocking the boat” this year.  Another new idea called “Project Weekly” was introduced.  Project Weekly is a challenge for our Cary-Kildaire Club members to wear a Rotary shirt each week.  The theme for Rotary International is “Engage Rotary, Change Lives”.  I think with Project Weekly we will be more ENGAGED with Rotary each week and we’ll be more likely to tell others and invite them to our meetings & events.  If any member can wear their shirt each week and capture that event on camera, they will receive a really cool prize/gift at the end of the 11-month challenge.

I have already received photos of two members getting an early start on Project Weekly!  The challenge doesn’t officially start until August 3rd (when our new Rotary polo shirts will arrive).  I’m looking forward to the challenge myself!  I think it is going to be a great year and I’m very blessed to be part of such a wonderful club and to be able to call myself a Rotarian.  Please let me know if you ever want to join our club for dinner, we meet on Thursday evenings from 6:15pm-7:15pm at MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary, NC.

How cool is this!?!  Papa Spud’s made the FRONT PAGE of the Cary News earlier this week.  Papa Spud’s is a client of Smith & Smith, CPA and we are so proud of Rob Myer, owner & founder, of Papa Spud’s for all of their growth and success in the area.  Papa Spud’s delivers locally grown produce along with other specialty items to thousands of customer’s doorsteps across the Triangle on a weekly basis (like an online farmers market).  Congrats again to Rob and his whole team.

Pinnacle Awards with Brenda & Shelli

Pinnacle Awards with Brenda & Shelli

Yesterday I had the distinct pleasure of attending the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce Pinnacle Business Awards.  I was a guest of The Matthew’s House of Cary, thank you Brenda and Sheila for the invitation!  The Matthew’s House is also a client of Smith & Smith, CPAThe Matthew’s House was being honored with an award in the “Individual Entrepreneurial Company Awards” section as the winner in the 10-25 Employee category.  Super congrats to them!!!  Sheila Ogle, owner of The Matthew’s House, went on stage to accept the award and we all cheered so loud for her!

Congrats to the winners!

Congrats to the winners!

It was such a fun luncheon and I enjoyed being part of The Matthew’s House table.  My good friend, Shelli Dallacqua, President of Shelten Media, was also at the table and she was busy keeping social media up-to-date on the progress of the luncheon awards.  The luncheon was held at the Raleigh Convention Center in downtown Raleigh and was hosted by Penn Holderness of NBC-17/WNCN.  There were several other award winners from the Cary area and a big CONGRATS to my dear friend and fellow WBON of Cary Board member, Karen Albright, for her company, BodyLase Skin Spa for winning an award in the “Steady Growth and Profitability Award” category!  Congrats to all the winners.  Thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for styling me in the silver ruffled metalic Trina Turk blouse.  Mention Beccasblog.com the next time you shop at My Girlfriend’s Closet (downtown Cary & downtown Apex) and get 10% off your total purchase!

Last week was also the ShopLocalRaleigh May Morning Social and it was held at the corporate office of Pretty In Pink Foundation.  I was impressed with the good crowd of people, especially considering it was the Friday of Memorial Day weekend.  I enjoyed meeting Dr. Anna Abernethy, she is part of the dental team at Renaissance Dental Care, located in the North Hills Shopping Center in Raleigh.  I also enjoyed talking with John Stanton, President/CEO of The UPS Store.  He currently owns two UPS Stores in the area and is expanding with a third store to the Cary area very soon.  Congrats to both Dr. Anna and John for the success and growth of their new & expanding companies!

Pretty In Pink and Hospice of Wake County

Lacie and Blake

Lacie and Blake

Today’s blog topic is Tattoos and Hospice…once again a title that makes you stop and wonder how they go together right?  The tattoo part represents a fantastic fundraiser event for Pretty In Pink that Blake and I attended last week.  The fundraiser was held at Phoenix Tattoo, a client of Smith & Smith, CPA, located in downtown Raleigh.  The owner, Lacie Frain, personally invited Blake and me to attend.  The breast cancer benefit was in memory of Val Helton.  The Helton family has also been a long time client of Smith & Smith, CPA and it was really nice to see Shawn Helton at the event.

Quilt by Lacie Frain

Quilt by Lacie Frain

Phoenix Tattoo was a great place for the fundraiser and the party featured a live DJ, refreshments and raffle prizes.  The walls were decorated with framed art by some of the tattoo artists and one of the items up for auction was this really awesome quilt, handmade by Lacie Frain herself (so not only is Lacie a talented tattoo artist, but also good with quilting and other crafts).  Blake and I ended up being the top bidder on the quilt, so we’ll be getting it next week YEA!  Phoenix Tattoo is located off of Hillsborough Street and offers custom tattooing and welcomes clients by appointments and walk-ins.  They have tons and tons of tattoo books to look through (some will blow your mind!) as well as a Art Gallery inside the studio. I’m not sure on an exact figure, but last I heard from Lacie they had raised over $1,500 for Pretty In Pink!  I’m sure that number was higher by the time the event ended later in the night.   Thanks to all the Pretty In Pink does for breast cancer survivors in and around this area.

Hospice of Wake County tour

Hospice of Wake County tour

Earlier in the week I joined 18 other women from the Cary Women’s Giving Network (part of the Cary Community Foundation) for a tour of Hospice of Wake County.  This was a lunch & learn event with a tour of the facility, and the opportunity tot learn about the ongoing efforts on behalf of families of Wake County.  The Hospice of Wake County facility was built three years ago and houses 20 rooms, 300+ staff, 400+ volunteers, plus an on-site grief center that is open to the public.

hospHospice of Wake County was uniquely founded over 35 years ago by a physician and is unique it was formed strictly to meet community needs and is a non-profit organization.  The staff is very proud of the fact that since 1979 a patient has never been turned away because of financial need.  I can honestly say that Hospice is a very caring place and that they focus on helping individuals and families deal with the final end of life stages.  God Bless the Hospice workers & volunteers.  Thank you Sarah Perkins of the Cary Women’s Giving Network for setting up this lunch & learn experience for us with Hospice of Wake County!

 Tigers, Tape, and Tickets!

Master Rondy presents to CCC Biz of Women

Master Rondy presents to CCC Biz of Women

So this blog is going to be a mix of many random things…should be interesting!  Last week at the Cary Chamber Business of Women luncheon, we had the opportunity to hear from Master Rondy of White Tiger Taekwondo.  Master Rondy has been a client of Smith & Smith, CPA for many years, and really is an amazing woman!  She’s been recognized for her work in the martial arts field and continues to win awards, accolades and honors for her talented skills.  She shared with us a really cool presentation about her background and her career in the martial arts, along with sharing about her cool group called Lady Tigers.  Thanks for sharing your knowledge (and killer martial arts skills) with us Master Rondy! Our oldest son, Trent, will be taking classes at White Tiger in a few weeks, he is sooooooooooooo excited!

100_9211I had a sweet gift come to the office last week…my dear friend, Paige Williams, owner of Great Harvest Bread Co. in Cary, came by the office to see me.  Paige and I have been friends for many years, and we’ve networked all across Wake County together!  She brought me the most adorable high-heel shoe tape dispenser!  I’ve been giving these away for months as door prizes at the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch, but had yet to purchase one for myself!  To say that I love it would be an understatement!  Thanks so much Paige for thinking of me!  You know a friend knows you well when they bring you a tape dispenser that is a miniature high-heel leopard print shoe!  Let me know if you need anything taped and I will gladly assist you!  Also go by Great Harvest Bread to see their delicious Easter Goodies (I’m a huge fan myself of their oh-so-cute BUNNY BREAD).

PINK in concert with friends

PINK in concert with friends

I checked something off of my ‘bucket list’ a few weeks ago too…I went to see PINK in concert.  You may scoff at that, but just imagine getting to see one of your most favorite music artist in concert live, and well, PINK is top of that list for me.  Back in the Fall of 2012, I purchased tickets to see PINK in Charlotte, along with three of my good close girlfriends.  Last week it happened for me!  We made the pilgrimage to Charlotte to see PINK perform, and WOW, it was excellent!  She did all of this crazy acrobatic stuff, flying through the air and swinging from silk sheets, truly amazing!  We had a nice weekend visit in Charlotte; I’d like to go back when I have more time to explore.  Thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for the ‘rocker style’ Boston Proper black cut-out-shoulder top.
