Vacation is OVER!  Back to Work!

Ahhhhhhhh…that time of year when vacation is over (so long beach week!) and we are back to work!  We had a great time last week at Myrtle Beach with the Smith family…good weather, no shark bites, only a tad bit of sunburn and lots of relaxation!  But now back to the grind….September and October are not too far away…which means deadlines for extended personal and corporate tax returns.  But another blog soon to come on that.  Let’s focus on some new & exciting things for clients of Smith & Smith, CPA!

Avery County Rotary Club in Banner Elk, NC

July came and went really fast!  It’s typically a quite time around the office, a month we use to get caught up on some work and get some planning done for the rest of the year.  I had an opportunity in mid-July to travel to Banner Elk, NC to drop-off and pick-up our oldest son, Trent, from summer camp at Holston Presbytery Camp.  On my trip back up to the NC mountains (my fave by the way), I was invited to speak to the Avery Country Rotary Club by club member, Larry Hazen.   Larry and I met years ago when we attended Rotary PETS before our year as Club President.  This was such a fun opportunity and I loved meeting all of their club members and sharing my personal Rotary Story with them.  I took along a Rotary Flag from my own Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club and traded flags with their Club President.  So cool!  I love their flag…mountains and a fir tree!  I will present the flag this week to my Club President, Andy Wright.

Support Local!

Happy Friday!  Ahhhh…only 2 ½ weeks until April 15th!  Can you hear the stress in my voice…oh wait, maybe that is the excitement as April 15th means that our Tax Celebration Dinner at The Angus Barn is the next night on April 16th!  Anyway, just a few fun things to share as we welcome in the weekend!

Brownies at Life Experiences

Brownies at Life Experiences

I signed-up to take two trays of brownies to the Oak Grove Elementary School Ollie Fest PTA Fundraiser this coming weekend for the Cake Walk, and since I’m not much of a baker, I called on my good friends at Life Experiences for help!  They have a kitchen department and make the BEST brownies EVER!  Here I am with some of my sweet friends in the bakery picking up my order.  Only $10 per tray and it goes to a great cause!  Thanks to Mary Madenspacher, Executive Director, and close friend of mine in Rotary for helping me with the order.  Life Experiences can help cater your next luncheon or business event too (box lunch, cookie trays, etc.).

SLR at The Chocolate Boutique

SLR at The Chocolate Boutique

Before I went to Life Experiences, I stopped by The Chocolate Boutique in Morrisville for the ShopLocalRaleigh Friday Morning Social.  It is located in Park West, love that shopping center and the place was full of chocolate and other local business owners.   I got there just in time for the great networking and of course…chocolate tasting!!!!!  Yummy!

New friends at SLR

New friends at SLR

Jennifer Martin, the Executive Director for ShopLocalRaleigh, took a few minutes to talk and updated everyone on the great upcoming SLR events, such as Brewgaloo that is on Saturday, April 26th.  Another big issue for SLR is the Raleigh sign-ordnance that is really impacting the small business owners in Raleigh, Jennifer is VERY passionate about helping fight for the small business owners involved with this issue!  Jonathan Menard, also known as Jonny Popcorn, was there at the social and quickly became a fan-favorite.

Carolina Popcorn Shoppe

Carolina Popcorn Shoppe

He owns Carolina Popcorn Shoppe with his family and they had free samples (DOUBLE YUMMY!!!)  Here I am in a picture with Johathan and Elizabeth,  who is a CPA, and who knows the stress of April 15th deadline…so popcorn was a nice treat for us all!  I love SLR and it was fun to see so many friends (Mica, Kim, Gregg, Donna, and more!)  Thanks to Lois Cozart, Owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in the colorful dress by Ellison.  MGC has TONS of great spring wear and sandals out now and also something new in the store that I will mention in my blog next week!  Stay tuned!!!!!

Tax season is in full swing!  We are accepting new clients and the phones & emails are very busy with inquires for service and appointments are coming in strong.  Thank you so much!  We love working with all of our clients and we appreciate your business!  Thank you for referring to Smith & Smith, CPA!

Celebrations of the Season!

Becca, Juliet and Andy bell ringing

Becca, Juliet and Andy bell ringing

Something very odd and unusual happened last Friday…it was a very warm 78-degrees!!!  And it also happened to be the day that I had signed up to work a 2-hour shift ringing the Salvation Army Bell for the Red Kettle project.  I do this every year on behalf of my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club.  It’s something that I look forward to each year and just find so much joy in giving back.  I rang this year with my good friend and fellow Rotarian, Andy Wright. Thanks to my sweet friend, Dr. Heather Sefried, owner of Nirvelli Day Spa and Preston Chiropractic, for stopping by to say hello and her sweet daughter, Juliet, got in the picture with us.

Now believe it or not…I have NEVER seen the movie, The Christmas Story.  I know, it’s crazy right?  I know about the movie, I know lots of people who love it and watch it every year religiously at Christmas time, but somehow I’ve managed to miss the whole thing when it comes on TV.  However, this past Sunday I had the pleasure of seeing The Christmas Story performed LIVE and ON STAGE in downtown Cary at the Cary Cultural Arts Center.  I went with my friend (and Smith & Smith, CPA client), Lisa Cotter, owner of DoctorsExpress in Cary.  We were there to support our friend, Sharon Galluzzo who was plying the part of Miss Shields.  Sharon was fantastic, the play was great and we had a blast! And now I’m a FAN of The Christmas Story!

MomSquad Cookie Bake

MomSquad Cookie Bake

Last night I hosted my FIRST ever Cookie Bake & Decorate Party!  I invited several of the kids in Mark’s preschool class over to our house for dinner and decorating.  It was so fun! I picked up a delicious chicken nugget tray from Chick-fil-a Waverly Place in Cary (soooooo good and everyone loves there food, also so great for parties like this) and all of the moms brought a dish to share.  After dinner we gathered in the dining room to decorate tons and tons of sugar cookies.  There was lots of laughter, plus tons of sprinkles, glitter icing, mini M&M’s all flying around the room.  We made tons of cookies to share with others during the holidays…but best of all…we made holiday memories with our kids.  Thanks to everyone in the “MomSquad” for coming over.  So much going on this time of the year, I hope you have time to make memories with your family.

Dr. Jaff and His Family

Dr. Jaff and Family

Dr. Jaff and Family

Last Thursday our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club had the unique pleasure of hearing from Dr. Dilshad Jaff, a Rotary Peace Fellow Scholar who is studying here in the USA at the Duke-UNC Rotary Center for International Studies.  Dr. Jaff and his lovely wife, Suzan, and their daughter, Yasna, came to the US earlier this summer and are staying in Carrboro, NC.  A few weeks ago, in late September, we had an off-site Rotary Club meeting at Life Experiences and got to meet Dr. Jaff and his family (and also did a surprise birthday party for Dr. Jaff!!) I really enjoyed meeting them and Yasna had fun playing with all of the other Cary-Kildaire Rotary kids.

Last Thursday Dr. Jaff shared with our club about his work with the International Committee of the Red Cross and Rotary Peace Center at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand.  His presentation was really interesting and included lots of before and after slides of different medical clinics in the Middle East.  I really enjoyed hearing Suzan speak about her traditional Kurdish dress; oh my it was soooooo lovely!  She came to the front so we could all see her lovely black and red print dress.  The traditional Kurdish dress is an ongoing part of the Kurdish heritage and has never gone out of fashion.  They dresses are for everyday wear and not reserved only for holidays. The outfit usually includes a vest or long-sleeved jacket worn over the gown (Suzan had on a bright red sequenced vest).  An underdress and puffy pants is worn underneath the dress.

Awesome shoes!!!

Suzan had on black puffy pants that were very sparkly!  She also had on a really neat accessory headpiece and lots of jewelry!  It was really special for her to dress this way and come to visit our club!  Thanks so much Suzan for sharing part of your Kurdish heritage with us!  We also enjoyed hearing Dr. Jaff give his presentation and we look forward to seeing more of them during their time here in the USA.

Giving, Loving and Supporting Our Community

Carla, Becca and Dr. Brolin

Carla, Becca and Dr. Brolin

All too often we get so wrapped-up in just work, work, work.  We get all consumed about our families, our kids, who-is-supposed-to-go-where-when-and-what-time…we forget to pause and think about others in life who are struggling or not as fortunate as us.  So Thursday was a very nice day of honoring those in our community who are working hard to improve the lives of many in our area.  Carla Liberatore, Vice President of The Liberatore Stroud Group, invited me to attend the Cary Women’s Giving Network Grant Awards Luncheon.  The CWGN is a member of the North Carolina Community Foundation and is an organization of local women operating together to bring resources to the needy in the community.

Corral Riding Academy was awarded a grant

Corral Riding Academy was awarded a grant

The group was formed in 2011 and this awards luncheon marked their very first year in awarding grants to non-profits serving Cary, under the direction of its full membership.  The luncheon was held at the beautiful Matthew’s House (a client of Smith & Smith, CPA) in downtown Cary.  The three grants awarded totaled $15,000 and were presented to The Corral Riding Academy, The Carying Place and Dorcas Ministries.  I love all three of these non-profits and it was honestly hard to hold back tears as each one took the podium and told about their organization and how the money would be used (okay, you know me, I’m a crybaby, so I didn’t hold back the tears).

It was wonderful to see so many of my fellow Cary women there at the luncheon, many of whom I respect and look-up to as role models (that would be you Judy Fourie, Sheila Ogle, Michelle Muir, Deidre Jersey, Cathy Burns and Liza Weidel).  Thank you so much Carla for inviting me and I look forward to working with the Cary Community Foundation this year!   And congrats to all the grant award winners and kudos for the work you do in our community.

For the evening hours, I ventured over to the NC State University Club for the WomenNC.org Local to Global’ dinner.  I attended this event last year, and had a very nice time.  WBON of Cary is a proud sponsor, so Susan Pruskin (WBON Treasure) and I were there to represent WBON.  We had a nice booth in the lobby and our candy-buffet drew lots of attention.  We were able to talk with attendees about our upcoming March Charity Fashion Show & Fundraiser (that will benefit The Carying Place this year).  WomenNC.org Founder & Executive Director, Beth Dehghan, is the owner of Village Cleaners, a good friend of mine,  and also a client of Smith & Smith, CPA.

WBON Supporting WomenNC.org

WBON Supporting WomenNC.org

The program this year featured 5 students (Yolanda, Brian, Marzia, Molly and Elisabeth) and they each took a turn at the podium talking about their program study and presenting their research.  They will travel to New York in March to attend the United Nations 57th Annual “Commission on the Status of Women”, where they will present their research to people from 200+ countries and over 400 NGO’s.  Thank you Beth for inviting us to participate!  We were also happy to have Shirin Mashhoon attend; she’s in the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club with Susan and me.  Again, wonderful work done by WomenNC.org to bring awareness of women’s human rights, equality and opportunity to the forefront and for their work engaging local young-adult college leaders.

And thanks as always to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet of downtown Apex & Cary for the lovely royal blue BCGBMaxazria dress!  It was a great fit for all of the box lifting with the WBON booth and for moving from event to event on Thursday.
