Ronald McDonald House & The Corral with WGN

Becca & Tammy

Becca & Tammy

I would like to thank my friend Tammy Cordes, for inviting me on Tuesday to the Ronald McDonald House “One Small Year” Fund-Raising Breakfast.  The event was held at McKimmon Center in Raleigh and was an effort to support the Ronald McDonald House of Durham.  It was an excellent opportunity to learn how we can support seriously ill children and their families.  Several stories were shared from the podium of how lives have been altered in changed…in just one small year…with an illness that strikes suddenly and totally unexpected.  It was a very emotional morning as lots of tears were shed around the room from the heartfelt stories of tragedy and survival.  Thanks so much for the invite Tammy, Blake and I are proud to be new supporters of the Ronald McDonald House.

Women’s Giving Network at Corral

That afternoon I joined the Cary Community Foundation Women’s Giving Network for a brown-bag lunch and tour of The Corral Riding Academy.  The Corral was a recipient of a grant earlier this year from the Women’s Giving Network.  It is always a fun opportunity for me to get to visit The Corral and I love their work and their mission.  For many of the WGN ladies, this was their first time on the farm!  Thanks to Joy, the Executive Director, for hosting us for lunch and for a tour!  Amazing things are happening in the lives of young-at-risk-girls in Wake County, thank you Corral!   Thank you to My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex and downtown Cary for dressing me in this lovely Boston Proper top!  It was a beautiful outfit for the cool Fall weather, loved the bedazzled broach in the middle too!  Shop My Girlfriend’s Closet and tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get 10% off your purchase!

Awards to the Community

2013 Cary Community Foundation Grant Awards Breakfast

2013 Cary Community Foundation Grant Awards Breakfast

Last Friday I attended the Cary Community Foundation 2013 Grants Awards Breakfast at the lovely Matthews House in downtown Cary.  The Matthews House is a client of Smith & Smith, CPA, and a very beautiful place for events of all kinds!   I joined the Cary Community Foundation Board earlier this year and it has been a fun opportunity and I’ve met some wonderful community leaders.  I helped serve on the Grants Committee this year and we had over 25 grant applications to read through and compare.  It was so hard…I wanted to give them ALL grant money!  I had tears in my eyes as I read through the grant applications.  We had $7,000 to give out to all of these worthy organizations.

The grant awards were divided into different categories, which made it much easier to judge.  The Cary Community Foundation President, Carla Liberatore, hosted the Grants Awards Breakfast and opened the morning with a welcome.  Sheila Ogle of the Matthews House offered the invocation and then breakfast was served buffet style (and it was sooo yummy and healthy!)  Vice President, Laird Hepburn, gave out all of the grant checks and asked each recipient to speak briefly about their organization and how the money would be used to benefit the good of those in the Cary Community.  Once again, some of the stories that the grant recipients shared really brought tears to your eyes.  It is so rewarding to know that the money is being put to good use for those who really need an extra hand in life.  One of my favorite non-profits, The Corral, was the recipient of grant money that will be used towards after school educational supplies for the girls at The Corral.

Another one of my favorite grant awards was given to Hospice of Wake County for a signature piece of art that will be put in the bereavement garden and will be focused on children and their healing needs.  The morning event was very special and I think everyone left the breakfast feeling blessed and uplifted.   Congrats to all of the grant award recipients!   I enjoyed seeing lots of friends and also would like to thank, Liz Cantino from VantageSouth Bank for joining me as my guest.

Pretty In Pink and Hospice of Wake County

Lacie and Blake

Lacie and Blake

Today’s blog topic is Tattoos and Hospice…once again a title that makes you stop and wonder how they go together right?  The tattoo part represents a fantastic fundraiser event for Pretty In Pink that Blake and I attended last week.  The fundraiser was held at Phoenix Tattoo, a client of Smith & Smith, CPA, located in downtown Raleigh.  The owner, Lacie Frain, personally invited Blake and me to attend.  The breast cancer benefit was in memory of Val Helton.  The Helton family has also been a long time client of Smith & Smith, CPA and it was really nice to see Shawn Helton at the event.

Phoenix Tattoo was a great place for the fundraiser and the party featured a live DJ, refreshments and raffle prizes.  The walls were decorated with framed art by some of the tattoo artists and one of the items up for auction was this really awesome quilt, handmade by Lacie Frain herself (so not only is Lacie a talented tattoo artist, but also good with quilting and other crafts).  Blake and I ended up being the top bidder on the quilt, so we’ll be getting it next week YEA!  Phoenix Tattoo is located off of Hillsborough Street and offers custom tattooing and welcomes clients by appointments and walk-ins.  They have tons and tons of tattoo books to look through (some will blow your mind!) as well as a Art Gallery inside the studio. I’m not sure on an exact figure, but last I heard from Lacie they had raised over $1,500 for Pretty In Pink!  I’m sure that number was higher by the time the event ended later in the night.   Thanks to all the Pretty In Pink does for breast cancer survivors in and around this area.

Hospice of Wake County tour

Hospice of Wake County tour

Earlier in the week I joined 18 other women from the Cary Women’s Giving Network (part of the Cary Community Foundation) for a tour of Hospice of Wake County.  This was a lunch & learn event with a tour of the facility, and the opportunity tot learn about the ongoing efforts on behalf of families of Wake County.  The Hospice of Wake County facility was built three years ago and houses 20 rooms, 300+ staff, 400+ volunteers, plus an on-site grief center that is open to the public.

hospHospice of Wake County was uniquely founded over 35 years ago by a physician and is unique it was formed strictly to meet community needs and is a non-profit organization.  The staff is very proud of the fact that since 1979 a patient has never been turned away because of financial need.  I can honestly say that Hospice is a very caring place and that they focus on helping individuals and families deal with the final end of life stages.  God Bless the Hospice workers & volunteers.  Thank you Sarah Perkins of the Cary Women’s Giving Network for setting up this lunch & learn experience for us with Hospice of Wake County!

Giving, Loving and Supporting Our Community

Carla, Becca and Dr. Brolin

Carla, Becca and Dr. Brolin

All too often we get so wrapped-up in just work, work, work.  We get all consumed about our families, our kids, who-is-supposed-to-go-where-when-and-what-time…we forget to pause and think about others in life who are struggling or not as fortunate as us.  So Thursday was a very nice day of honoring those in our community who are working hard to improve the lives of many in our area.  Carla Liberatore, Vice President of The Liberatore Stroud Group, invited me to attend the Cary Women’s Giving Network Grant Awards Luncheon.  The CWGN is a member of the North Carolina Community Foundation and is an organization of local women operating together to bring resources to the needy in the community.

The group was formed in 2011 and this awards luncheon marked their very first year in awarding grants to non-profits serving Cary, under the direction of its full membership.  The luncheon was held at the beautiful Matthew’s House (a client of Smith & Smith, CPA) in downtown Cary.  The three grants awarded totaled $15,000 and were presented to The Corral Riding Academy, The Carying Place and Dorcas Ministries.  I love all three of these non-profits and it was honestly hard to hold back tears as each one took the podium and told about their organization and how the money would be used (okay, you know me, I’m a crybaby, so I didn’t hold back the tears).

It was wonderful to see so many of my fellow Cary women there at the luncheon, many of whom I respect and look-up to as role models (that would be you Judy Fourie, Sheila Ogle, Michelle Muir, Deidre Jersey, Cathy Burns and Liza Weidel).  Thank you so much Carla for inviting me and I look forward to working with the Cary Community Foundation this year!   And congrats to all the grant award winners and kudos for the work you do in our community.

For the evening hours, I ventured over to the NC State University Club for the WomenNC.org Local to Global’ dinner.  I attended this event last year, and had a very nice time.  WBON of Cary is a proud sponsor, so Susan Pruskin (WBON Treasure) and I were there to represent WBON.  We had a nice booth in the lobby and our candy-buffet drew lots of attention.  We were able to talk with attendees about our upcoming March Charity Fashion Show & Fundraiser (that will benefit The Carying Place this year).  WomenNC.org Founder & Executive Director, Beth Dehghan, is the owner of Village Cleaners, a good friend of mine,  and also a client of Smith & Smith, CPA.

WBON Supporting WomenNC.org

WBON Supporting WomenNC.org

The program this year featured 5 students (Yolanda, Brian, Marzia, Molly and Elisabeth) and they each took a turn at the podium talking about their program study and presenting their research.  They will travel to New York in March to attend the United Nations 57th Annual “Commission on the Status of Women”, where they will present their research to people from 200+ countries and over 400 NGO’s.  Thank you Beth for inviting us to participate!  We were also happy to have Shirin Mashhoon attend; she’s in the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club with Susan and me.  Again, wonderful work done by WomenNC.org to bring awareness of women’s human rights, equality and opportunity to the forefront and for their work engaging local young-adult college leaders.

And thanks as always to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet of downtown Apex & Cary for the lovely royal blue BCGBMaxazria dress!  It was a great fit for all of the box lifting with the WBON booth and for moving from event to event on Thursday.
