Today was the 2014-2015 Kick-Off for my FAVORITE series offered by the Cary Chamber of Commerce, the Business of Women Luncheon!  I love this event and try to attend each month if I can.  The lunches are held at Prestonwood Country Club and always draw a nice crowd of professional working women, many of whom I look forward to seeing each month!  The speaker this month was Sergeant-Major Robin Fortner of the US Marines.  She is one of 21 women in the country with this title and what an AMAZING woman she is!  Her topic was “Women and the Marines – Past, Present and Future”.  She was a very engaging speaker and took us back through the history of women in the US Marines.  She said that the male and female US Marines go through Boot Camp and Parris Island, but they are kept separated and that this is ONLY done by the Marines, the other branches combine their training.

She believes that the separation helps to cut down on the sexual assault and other issues that are facing the other military branches.  I really enjoyed hearing her speak and she received a standing ovation at the end of her talk.  Alicia went with me to represent Smith & Smith, CPA and we had our photo taken with Sergeant-Major Fortner, along with my friend and fellow Rotarian, Shannon Reaves, after lunch.  Our lunch table was full of fun ladies and friends, mainly bankers but it’s all about the networking!  Thank you to Delancy Carroll of the Cary Chamber for inviting Sergeant-Major Fortner to speak to us about Women Marines.  Join in with the Business of Women next month on October 16th.

Words to Remember from Denise Bennett

Once a month I attend the Business of Women luncheon, one of my favorite monthly events hosted by the Cary Chamber of Commerce.

Denise and Becca

Denise and Becca

The luncheon is held at Prestonwood Country Club and always draws a nice crowd of professional workingwomen (many of which are my friends).   The food and networking are always great and I leave feeling refreshed and smiling.  Denise Bennett was the speaker for March and she really impressed the whole room! I heard her speak last year at the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch and I was excited to hear her speak again.  She shared words of wisdom from her grandmother and here are my favorites: “You can’t be pitiful and powerful at the same time”, “A closed mouth never gets fed”,  “Bloom where you are planted”, “Go where you are celebrated, not tolerated”, and my most favorite “Common sense ain’t common to everyone”.  Thanks Denise for being a woman that I highly respect and admire!

Happy First Day of Spring!!!! Thanks to Lois Cozart at My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in the linen white t-shirt dress from Island Company and the really funky fur belt that is from the Cartellini fur leather belt collection.  I am ready for some warm weather!

Tax season is in full swing!  We are accepting new clients and the phones & emails are very busy with inquires for service and appointments are coming in strong.  Thank you so much!  We love working with all of our clients and we appreciate your business!  Thank you for referring to Smith & Smith, CPA!

 Tigers, Tape, and Tickets!

Master Rondy presents to CCC Biz of Women

Master Rondy presents to CCC Biz of Women

So this blog is going to be a mix of many random things…should be interesting!  Last week at the Cary Chamber Business of Women luncheon, we had the opportunity to hear from Master Rondy of White Tiger Taekwondo.  Master Rondy has been a client of Smith & Smith, CPA for many years, and really is an amazing woman!  She’s been recognized for her work in the martial arts field and continues to win awards, accolades and honors for her talented skills.  She shared with us a really cool presentation about her background and her career in the martial arts, along with sharing about her cool group called Lady Tigers.  Thanks for sharing your knowledge (and killer martial arts skills) with us Master Rondy! Our oldest son, Trent, will be taking classes at White Tiger in a few weeks, he is sooooooooooooo excited!

100_9211I had a sweet gift come to the office last week…my dear friend, Paige Williams, owner of Great Harvest Bread Co. in Cary, came by the office to see me.  Paige and I have been friends for many years, and we’ve networked all across Wake County together!  She brought me the most adorable high-heel shoe tape dispenser!  I’ve been giving these away for months as door prizes at the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch, but had yet to purchase one for myself!  To say that I love it would be an understatement!  Thanks so much Paige for thinking of me!  You know a friend knows you well when they bring you a tape dispenser that is a miniature high-heel leopard print shoe!  Let me know if you need anything taped and I will gladly assist you!  Also go by Great Harvest Bread to see their delicious Easter Goodies (I’m a huge fan myself of their oh-so-cute BUNNY BREAD).

PINK in concert with friends

PINK in concert with friends

I checked something off of my ‘bucket list’ a few weeks ago too…I went to see PINK in concert.  You may scoff at that, but just imagine getting to see one of your most favorite music artist in concert live, and well, PINK is top of that list for me.  Back in the Fall of 2012, I purchased tickets to see PINK in Charlotte, along with three of my good close girlfriends.  Last week it happened for me!  We made the pilgrimage to Charlotte to see PINK perform, and WOW, it was excellent!  She did all of this crazy acrobatic stuff, flying through the air and swinging from silk sheets, truly amazing!  We had a nice weekend visit in Charlotte; I’d like to go back when I have more time to explore.  Thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for the ‘rocker style’ Boston Proper black cut-out-shoulder top.

Science Camp, Diet Foods and Legally Blond!

Trent & Zoom at Science is Fun for Everyone camp!

So much going on!  Time to do a lump-sum blog to wrap things up to date.  Our family is now fully involved in the Wake County School System, YEAR ROUND SCHOOL.  And to be honest, we really like it!  It fits our life pretty well and Trent seems happy.  We just completed our first round of ‘track out’ where Trent was out of school for three weeks in October.  Like a good mom, I had him booked for three different weeks of track-out camps.  The first one we did was Town of Cary.  Great camp, lots of fun, lots of field-trips during the week, good schedule and fun kids.  Trent had a good time, he had to miss a few days for the funeral of my Uncle Mark in TN, but other than that, we were happy with the camp.  His 2nd week of track-out was BY FAR his favorite!  He went to ‘SCIENCE’  Track-Out camp at a great place in Cary called “Science Fun For Everyone”.  I heard about this place through an event I worked earlier this year through Carolina Parent magazine.  His week of camp was called “OceanAdvenshores” and he had a total blast studying ocean science, mixing mixtures and just learning, learning learning!  Here is Trent with his hermit crab, properly named “Zoom”.  His third week of track-out camp was done at LifeTime Fitness and was another good week for him.  So now we are tracked-back-in and looking forward to a good 2nd quarter.

Uncle Mark Orchid

As I mentioned earlier, my Uncle Mark passed away in early October.  He had a long and painful battle was cancer.  We hated to see him go, but his body & soul had done all it could and it was time for him to go to Heaven.  I’d like to say thank you so much to my friends and family who sent cards, notes and loving emails of support.  Two of my sweet friends, Renee and Heather, sent me a huge bouquet of sunflowers and this beautiful purple orchid.  What a nice and thoughtful gift of lasting love.  Thank you girls!

Cary Chamber Business of Women

The Cary Chamber hosted their Business of Women luncheon for October.  The speaker was Trish Vulpis, a registered dietician from WakeMed.  Trish gave a fantastic talk on “Nutrition Know How”.  We’ve all heard speakers on food, healthy, diet, etc. before, but she gave a nice twist on the topic.  She didn’t make us feel guilty for eating and enjoying Prestonwood Country Club’s huge buffet of awesome food!  She talked to us about enjoying our food and to consider why and when we are eating…what are the motivating factors…things to think about for sure!  I was happy to see so many wonderful Cary Chamber friends!  Here is a picture of me with Trish and Autumn LaBarca (the NEW Marketing and Public Relations Director for White Tiger Taekwondo)!

Thank you to My Girlfriend’s Closet for the beautiful Diane Von Furstenberg dresses that I wore to the Cary Chamber Business of Women and also the one that I have on in the picture with the orchid for my Uncle Mark.   My Girlfriend’s Closet carries all types of designer labels and brands.  Great place to shop and even better prices!  They have two stores, downtown Cary and downtown Apex and I shop at BOTH of them!

Legally Blond here we come!

Blake and I celebrated a few weeks ago with a very special dinner-date-overnight-stay in Raleigh!  I had won two tickets through the Cary Y We Build People Campaign to see go Legally Blond on Broadway and it was fantastic!  We started the evening off with dinner at The Big Easy in downtown Raleigh.  Great place to eat!  There was a live jazz band playing downstairs (we ate upstairs in the loft part).  Blake had a delicious steak and I had the salmon dinner.  Highly recommend their food and atmosphere for a nice dinner date!  The Legally Blond play was FANTASTIC!  The songs, music, characters and laughs were endless!

Thank you to My Girlfriend’s Closet for the beautiful Bebe black cocktail dress!

Debbie Yow of  NCSU for the Cary Chamber

I recently had the pleasure of introducing the guest speaker, Debbie Yow, for the Cary Chamber Business of Women & Sports Alliance joint-luncheon.

Debbie Yow speaking to the Cary Chamber

Normally the Business of Women meets at Prestonwood Country Club and the Sports Alliance meets at the Cary Chamber, both meetings offer networking, lunch and a guest speaker. The Sports Alliance is made up of committee members and business owners who have a vested interest in sporting events/athletics in the Cary area. Most people have no clue about all of the sporting venues and events that take place in Cary on a regular basis (nearly every weekend!!!) Between the WakeMed Soccer Field, USA Baseball, the Triangle Aquatic Center, Cary Tennis Park and the many public parks, Cary is a VERY busy place for sports on all levels! The Business of Women luncheon draws on all types of business and professional working women. The BOW is a favorite among many Chamber ladies/members and typically draws a large crowd of exceptional women each month. This luncheon was unique in that it combined both groups and was held at Vaughn Towers over near the RBC Center and the NSCU Carter-Finley Field.

Becca, Blake and Bob in Vaughn Towers, NCSU

Women Business Owners Network of Cary (WBON) is the Gold-Sponsor for the Business of Women Chamber luncheons and since I am the current President of WBON and a Cary Chamber Board of Directors member, I was given the honor of introducing Mrs. Debbie Yow-Director of Athletics for North Carolina State University.  My boss (and father-in-law), Bob, is an alumni of NCSU, and so I asked him and Blake (my husband) to join me for the luncheon that afternoon. It was exciting for us to be on the 1st floor in Vaughn Towers and to see the incredible view of the field from the box seats and members-only viewing area. We especially loved the bright red recycle cans that were covered by an extra-large NCSU football helmet. I had read through the bio/introduction for Debbie Yow several times (okay, about 25+ times as I was a little nervous and I wanted to make sure I got it all correct) and I couldn’t help but be impressed with her long list of coaching and leadership contributions in the high schools and colleges across the country.

Howard and Barry for the Cary Chamber

I was pleased to have sat beside her during lunch and got to speak with her on a more personal level. Turns out she spent a few years at ECU (GO PIRATES) and we joked about professional handshakes, one recent story of her’s in particular where a guy nearly broke her hand by shaking it too hard! I gave her some tips on how to get out of an uncomfortable handshake or how to avoid the ‘kisser’ or ‘hugger’ in the professional world, straight from the lips of etiquette coach-extraordinaire, Sharon Hill. Other guest at our table (besides Bob and Blake and me) included Howard Johnson (President of the Cary Chamber), Kathy Burns (Burns & Bynum, CPA and Chair-Elect for the Cary Chamber), Barry Mitsch (Pyramid Resource), Michelle Lee (NC State’s Senior Woman Administrator and the Associate Athletic Director) and Betty Jo Shepheard, (Field Representative for NC Senator Richard Burr). After I introduced Debbie Yow (I did so without stumbling through too many of my words), she took the microphone and told us her philosophy on leadership and shared with us her challenges of being only one of three women Athletic Directors in the country! One thing she wanted to stick with the women business owners/professionals in the crowd is this quote “Leadership Is Not a Gender Issue.” She talked about her zero-tolerance for the phrase of “That’s the way we’ve always done it” and shared how she will always be forever grateful to Maryland for getting her started in her college athletics career.

Delancy shows her WOLFPACK pride, along with Cary Chamber Ambassador, Heather Swanner

She mentioned that her main goal is to “not screw-up for the rest of the women in the world who will one day follow in her footsteps, as the world of college athletics leadership is still very much a mans world” (I loved that quote). She also talked about laying the right foundation and how you need to have the right people, resources and opportunities in place to make things happen. It all comes down to hiring the right people. She shared some great stories of her past players and inspirational people in her life. She left us with the ole’ favorite coaches quote “Good, Better, Best…” Look it up, it will inspire you!

One last fun announcement to share is that Cary, NC will be hosting their FIRST EVER US Olympic Trials at Bond Park! It will be for the Table Tennis sport and will be held February 9th-12th, tickets and details soon!  How exciting for Cary, NC!

Happy weekend!!!!

Our CPA firm in Cary is growing and are currently welcoming new clients.  We’ve changed our firm name to Smith & Smith, CPA, P.C. as Blake recently received his CPA license!  We are expanding into the office next door and we are hiring more staff.  We also have a BRAND NEW website up, check it out http://www.smithandsmithcpa.com/ Even with lots of great growth and changes taking place, we are never too busy to help a small business owner with their accounting/tax needs.  We welcome referrals!
