Tigers, Tape, and Tickets!
So this blog is going to be a mix of many random things…should be interesting! Last week at the Cary Chamber Business of Women luncheon, we had the opportunity to hear from Master Rondy of White Tiger Taekwondo. Master Rondy has been a client of Smith & Smith, CPA for many years, and really is an amazing woman! She’s been recognized for her work in the martial arts field and continues to win awards, accolades and honors for her talented skills. She shared with us a really cool presentation about her background and her career in the martial arts, along with sharing about her cool group called Lady Tigers. Thanks for sharing your knowledge (and killer martial arts skills) with us Master Rondy! Our oldest son, Trent, will be taking classes at White Tiger in a few weeks, he is sooooooooooooo excited!
I had a sweet gift come to the office last week…my dear friend, Paige Williams, owner of Great Harvest Bread Co. in Cary, came by the office to see me. Paige and I have been friends for many years, and we’ve networked all across Wake County together! She brought me the most adorable high-heel shoe tape dispenser! I’ve been giving these away for months as door prizes at the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch, but had yet to purchase one for myself! To say that I love it would be an understatement! Thanks so much Paige for thinking of me! You know a friend knows you well when they bring you a tape dispenser that is a miniature high-heel leopard print shoe! Let me know if you need anything taped and I will gladly assist you! Also go by Great Harvest Bread to see their delicious Easter Goodies (I’m a huge fan myself of their oh-so-cute BUNNY BREAD).
I checked something off of my ‘bucket list’ a few weeks ago too…I went to see PINK in concert. You may scoff at that, but just imagine getting to see one of your most favorite music artist in concert live, and well, PINK is top of that list for me. Back in the Fall of 2012, I purchased tickets to see PINK in Charlotte, along with three of my good close girlfriends. Last week it happened for me! We made the pilgrimage to Charlotte to see PINK perform, and WOW, it was excellent! She did all of this crazy acrobatic stuff, flying through the air and swinging from silk sheets, truly amazing! We had a nice weekend visit in Charlotte; I’d like to go back when I have more time to explore. Thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for the ‘rocker style’ Boston Proper black cut-out-shoulder top.

Debbie Yow of NCSU for the Cary Chamber
I recently had the pleasure of introducing the guest speaker, Debbie Yow, for the Cary Chamber Business of Women & Sports Alliance joint-luncheon.
Normally the Business of Women meets at Prestonwood Country Club and the Sports Alliance meets at the Cary Chamber, both meetings offer networking, lunch and a guest speaker. The Sports Alliance is made up of committee members and business owners who have a vested interest in sporting events/athletics in the Cary area. Most people have no clue about all of the sporting venues and events that take place in Cary on a regular basis (nearly every weekend!!!) Between the WakeMed Soccer Field, USA Baseball, the Triangle Aquatic Center, Cary Tennis Park and the many public parks, Cary is a VERY busy place for sports on all levels! The Business of Women luncheon draws on all types of business and professional working women. The BOW is a favorite among many Chamber ladies/members and typically draws a large crowd of exceptional women each month. This luncheon was unique in that it combined both groups and was held at Vaughn Towers over near the RBC Center and the NSCU Carter-Finley Field.
Women Business Owners Network of Cary (WBON) is the Gold-Sponsor for the Business of Women Chamber luncheons and since I am the current President of WBON and a Cary Chamber Board of Directors member, I was given the honor of introducing Mrs. Debbie Yow-Director of Athletics for North Carolina State University. My boss (and father-in-law), Bob, is an alumni of NCSU, and so I asked him and Blake (my husband) to join me for the luncheon that afternoon. It was exciting for us to be on the 1st floor in Vaughn Towers and to see the incredible view of the field from the box seats and members-only viewing area. We especially loved the bright red recycle cans that were covered by an extra-large NCSU football helmet. I had read through the bio/introduction for Debbie Yow several times (okay, about 25+ times as I was a little nervous and I wanted to make sure I got it all correct) and I couldn’t help but be impressed with her long list of coaching and leadership contributions in the high schools and colleges across the country.
I was pleased to have sat beside her during lunch and got to speak with her on a more personal level. Turns out she spent a few years at ECU (GO PIRATES) and we joked about professional handshakes, one recent story of her’s in particular where a guy nearly broke her hand by shaking it too hard! I gave her some tips on how to get out of an uncomfortable handshake or how to avoid the ‘kisser’ or ‘hugger’ in the professional world, straight from the lips of etiquette coach-extraordinaire, Sharon Hill. Other guest at our table (besides Bob and Blake and me) included Howard Johnson (President of the Cary Chamber), Kathy Burns (Burns & Bynum, CPA and Chair-Elect for the Cary Chamber), Barry Mitsch (Pyramid Resource), Michelle Lee (NC State’s Senior Woman Administrator and the Associate Athletic Director) and Betty Jo Shepheard, (Field Representative for NC Senator Richard Burr). After I introduced Debbie Yow (I did so without stumbling through too many of my words), she took the microphone and told us her philosophy on leadership and shared with us her challenges of being only one of three women Athletic Directors in the country! One thing she wanted to stick with the women business owners/professionals in the crowd is this quote “Leadership Is Not a Gender Issue.” She talked about her zero-tolerance for the phrase of “That’s the way we’ve always done it” and shared how she will always be forever grateful to Maryland for getting her started in her college athletics career.
She mentioned that her main goal is to “not screw-up for the rest of the women in the world who will one day follow in her footsteps, as the world of college athletics leadership is still very much a mans world” (I loved that quote). She also talked about laying the right foundation and how you need to have the right people, resources and opportunities in place to make things happen. It all comes down to hiring the right people. She shared some great stories of her past players and inspirational people in her life. She left us with the ole’ favorite coaches quote “Good, Better, Best…” Look it up, it will inspire you!
One last fun announcement to share is that Cary, NC will be hosting their FIRST EVER US Olympic Trials at Bond Park! It will be for the Table Tennis sport and will be held February 9th-12th, tickets and details soon! How exciting for Cary, NC!
Happy weekend!!!!
