Parties and Celebrations in March!

Persian New Year

Persian New Year

Over the weekend Blake and I had the chance to attend our first ever Persian New Year Celebration.  Friends & clients of ours at Smith & Smith, CPA, Beth Dehghan and Vaji Yegani, (owners of Village Cleaners and Founder of WomenNC.org) invited us to their lovely home to celebrate with them.  We had a fantastic time and saw lots of other friends at the party.  Here is a picture of Christine Engelbrecht, me, Lois Cozart and Beth Dehghan.  The four of us do lots of networking and community events together in Wake County.  I love these ladies!  Thanks to Lois for the dress I am wearing!  It’s right off the rack at her store, My Girlfriend’s Closet!

Learning about the NoRuz table

Learning about the NoRuz table

We had a chance to learn about The Festival of NoRuz (meaning The New Day) for the Persian/Iranian New Year that is celebrated on the Northward Equinox, usually on March 21st.  Beth and Vaji had a beautiful table set-up in the center of the room for the celebration and Vaji & his brother-in-law took time to explain the table and it’s meaning to us (seven items on the table that start with the letter ‘S’ in the Iranian language). Here is a picture of Vaji explaining the table.  It was beautiful and my favorite part was the bowl of goldfish right in the middle.  There was plenty of delicious food and drinks and we especially loved the Iranian music that was playing during the evening.

With Kitty at the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch

Last week I also attended the Triangle Ladies Power luncheon (as I do every month) and the speaker was Kitty Kinnin of 100.7 The River (local radio station).  Kitty was a delightful speaker and she shared about her life and her experiences in radio and the music world.  She spoke about her son, Lucas, her true pride and joy!  Her story started in Miami and went to Colorado, Raleigh, Wilmington, and back to Raleigh.  My favorite thing that she said was “to always smile, it makes it all better”.  Here is a picture of me with Kitty Kinnin, along with Eleni Steadman of BJ’s Wholesale Membership Club, and Maureen Etoroma of First Travel Alliance.  Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet (located in downtown Cary and downtown Apex) for the lovely orange silk spring tunic top.  I loved wearing it and had lots of compliments!

Giving, Loving and Supporting Our Community

Carla, Becca and Dr. Brolin

Carla, Becca and Dr. Brolin

All too often we get so wrapped-up in just work, work, work.  We get all consumed about our families, our kids, who-is-supposed-to-go-where-when-and-what-time…we forget to pause and think about others in life who are struggling or not as fortunate as us.  So Thursday was a very nice day of honoring those in our community who are working hard to improve the lives of many in our area.  Carla Liberatore, Vice President of The Liberatore Stroud Group, invited me to attend the Cary Women’s Giving Network Grant Awards Luncheon.  The CWGN is a member of the North Carolina Community Foundation and is an organization of local women operating together to bring resources to the needy in the community.

Corral Riding Academy was awarded a grant

Corral Riding Academy was awarded a grant

The group was formed in 2011 and this awards luncheon marked their very first year in awarding grants to non-profits serving Cary, under the direction of its full membership.  The luncheon was held at the beautiful Matthew’s House (a client of Smith & Smith, CPA) in downtown Cary.  The three grants awarded totaled $15,000 and were presented to The Corral Riding Academy, The Carying Place and Dorcas Ministries.  I love all three of these non-profits and it was honestly hard to hold back tears as each one took the podium and told about their organization and how the money would be used (okay, you know me, I’m a crybaby, so I didn’t hold back the tears).

It was wonderful to see so many of my fellow Cary women there at the luncheon, many of whom I respect and look-up to as role models (that would be you Judy Fourie, Sheila Ogle, Michelle Muir, Deidre Jersey, Cathy Burns and Liza Weidel).  Thank you so much Carla for inviting me and I look forward to working with the Cary Community Foundation this year!   And congrats to all the grant award winners and kudos for the work you do in our community.

For the evening hours, I ventured over to the NC State University Club for the WomenNC.org Local to Global’ dinner.  I attended this event last year, and had a very nice time.  WBON of Cary is a proud sponsor, so Susan Pruskin (WBON Treasure) and I were there to represent WBON.  We had a nice booth in the lobby and our candy-buffet drew lots of attention.  We were able to talk with attendees about our upcoming March Charity Fashion Show & Fundraiser (that will benefit The Carying Place this year).  WomenNC.org Founder & Executive Director, Beth Dehghan, is the owner of Village Cleaners, a good friend of mine,  and also a client of Smith & Smith, CPA.

WBON Supporting WomenNC.org

WBON Supporting WomenNC.org

The program this year featured 5 students (Yolanda, Brian, Marzia, Molly and Elisabeth) and they each took a turn at the podium talking about their program study and presenting their research.  They will travel to New York in March to attend the United Nations 57th Annual “Commission on the Status of Women”, where they will present their research to people from 200+ countries and over 400 NGO’s.  Thank you Beth for inviting us to participate!  We were also happy to have Shirin Mashhoon attend; she’s in the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club with Susan and me.  Again, wonderful work done by WomenNC.org to bring awareness of women’s human rights, equality and opportunity to the forefront and for their work engaging local young-adult college leaders.

And thanks as always to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet of downtown Apex & Cary for the lovely royal blue BCGBMaxazria dress!  It was a great fit for all of the box lifting with the WBON booth and for moving from event to event on Thursday.

WomenNC and InterAct Host a Jazzy Evening!

WomenNC with Sarah & Beth

This week I attended an event that was coordinated and arranged by a dear friend & client, Beth Dehghan (owner of Village Cleaners and founder of WomenNC).  The event was called “A Jazzy Evening in Support of WomenNC and InterAct”.  I took along one of my attorney friends, Sarah Thacker of Thacker Law Firm.  We ventured to downtown Raleigh together (a big trip for us Cary-girls) to the Raleigh Little Theater (oh how I love this place!)  The evening event was held in the Gaddy-Goodwin Theater and involved a silent auction, raffle prizes, food and drinks.  Proceeds from the evening benefited WomenNC and InterAct.

WomenNC and InterAct event

Sarah and I are becoming regulars at local charity events/auctions, (this was our first one for WomenNC) though I am sad to report we weren’t the top bidders on any items this time…the ladies were just too fast for us to be the top winner!  But I did see some really neat items and I’ve got their bidding booklet to follow-up with a few people.  The Emcee for the evening was Jackie Hyland, anchor for WRAL and the event featured Moment’s Notice and St. Ambrose Jazz Mass Quartet for entertainment.  Some highlights of the event included an InterAct Survivor Story (read by Rev. Dr. Cheryl Kirk-Duggan) and the introduction of the 2013 WomenNC CSW Student Fellows.  Sarah and I did purchase some raffle tickets and she was the lucky winner of the O2 Fitness package!  Work it Sarah!  Thank you Beth for a lovely evening!  It is always a pleasure to be involved and to support WomenNC and InterAct.  And thank you to My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in this shift dress from White House Black Market and the fitted ruffle jacket by Ann Taylor.  Love them both and they fit the evening attire perfectly!

The Triangle Ladies Power Lunch hosted Congresswoman, Renee Ellmers as their August 2012 guest speaker.  Ellmers proudly represents North Carolina’s second district and was elected into office in 2010.

Carrie, Renee Ellmers & Becca

She was one of 89 Freshmen elected into Congress that year and is 1 of 24 Republican Women in the House of Representatives.  She’s a Michigan native and was a nurse before she ran for office.  Her husband is a general surgeon and they have a private practice in Dunn, NC.  Ellmers did an excellent job speaking to the TLPL ladies and shared not only her journey to politics, but also her goals, values and hopes for NC and the USA.  She quoted Margaret Thatcher In politics if you want anything said, ask a man.  If you want anything done, ask a woman.”-which drew a huge round of cheers and shouts from the audience.  She said that women bring common sense and efficiency to government and are more willing to work together on issues, despite their party affiliation.  I enjoyed hearing her speak and even though she had a busy afternoon schedule, she still took time to meet ladies and have pictures made.  I also thought she did a wonderful job on handling questions from the crowd.

Thank you to My Girlfriend’s Closet in Apex for styling me in this Gorgeous dress & jewelry. They are having a HUGE sale this weekend, “LIKE” them on Facebook HERE for sale updates and exclusive promotions!

Village Cleaners

There were several new vendors on display during the August luncheon, and I was proud to see Beth Dehghan, owner of Village Cleaners (and client of Smith & Smith, CPA), this was her first-ever booth display!  Beth and team worked hard on making their table attractive, informative and memorable.  Nice job Village Cleaners!  I also had the pleasure of meeting Cynthia and Brenn, first time guests to the TLPL and owners of Cyndi Chastain Entertainment (the COMPLETE entertainment package for your corporate or wedding event).  My lovely guests this month (part of the Smith & Smith, CPA sponsorship to TLPL) included: Heather Swanner, Owner of Heather Swanner Photography, Beth DonnerPresident of Diversified Planning and Heidi Harris, Marketing Consultant for The Ad Cure.  The other guests at our VIP table included: Catherine Easop, Financial Representative for Modern Woodman, Elizabeth Carrasco, Owner/Interior Designer of VIP Designs and Lissa McMahel, Design Consultant for BlindPros

TLPL & Global Run 4 Water

Join us next month for another fun TLPL!  I appreciate Carrie Peele (hostess for the luncheon), allowing me to have a few minutes to make an announcement to the group about the upcoming Global Run 4 Water.  It’s taking place on Sunday, September 30th at 4pm at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.  It includes a 5k Run/Walk and a 1-mile water carrying competition.  I had lots of ladies talk to me about the event afterwards, please sign-up to participate and help spread the word!!

The Cary Chamber hosted their final Business of Women meeting for the 2011-year this past week.  Delancy Carroll, Vice President of the Cary Chamber, was excited to tell us that the Business of Women was going into their 10th year of luncheons!  So exciting!

Dorcas Shop in Cary

And following the traditions of years past, the speaker for December was from a local charitable organization (in the spirit of giving!).  Dorcas Ministries was the presenter and the topic was “Honoring Our Past, and Building Our Future”.  The ladies from Dorcas, Deirdre Jersey, Capital Campaign Fundraising Chair and Jill Wissing, Crisis Ministry Manager, gave a very informative but moving talk about Dorcas Ministries.  Jill shared some really special stories during the lunch about individuals and families who have been helped by Dorcas.  Dorcas Shop recently moved to a much larger space in Cary and had their Grand Opening on October 1st
Volunteers working the Dorcas Shop Donation dock

I stopped by Dorcas Shop after the luncheon and delivered a large box of toys & other items at their donation center.  The two volunteers that helped unload my car were so friendly.  This is a wonderful place to volunteer if you are looking for an opportunity to serve our community.  Deirdre mentioned the quote during the presentation “Think GLOBALLY, but act LOCALY” and volunteering with Doras is a prime example of making that into a reality!  I was pleased to have my friend, Beth Dehghan, Owner of Village Cleaners, attend the luncheon with me. Some of the other fabulous ladies that we met at the luncheon included: Pat Richardson, Director of Community Relations for Galloway Ridge in Pittsboro, NC, Tracey Gritz, Owner of The Efficient Office, Christy Carver, Owner of Bella Bridesmaids, and the mother/daughter team of Print 2 Promote Sara Adcox and Brittany Brinkley

I am so pleased to share this ECU Christmas card that was put together by my lovely mother, Marsha Fleenor and her co-worker, Millicent Thomas.  Marsha and Millicent are part of the staff for the Office of Continuing Studies at East Carolina University.   They sent this card/picture via email to over 200 of their co-workers/friends.  I LOVE it!  Marsha and Millicent are big supporters of my blog, so this is a fun opportunity for me to give a shout-out back to them!  Don’t you just love the big wreath they are holding up!?!  So festive!  And I love my mom so much, she’s my best friend!!  If you are thinking about returning to school to complete an undergraduate degree or if you would like to earn a graduate degree online, the contact email address is Options@ecu.edu  Degree programs online that are offered through ECU make it possible for working adults to complete their degrees without returning to the classroom.  What are you waiting for….GO FOR IT!

I was so pleased to have had the opportunity to attend my first WomenNC.org event earlier this week.  I was introduced to this organization through a good friend and client, Beth Dehghan.  Beth is the Executive Director for WomenNC, which is a 501-(C)(3) non-profit organization that is involved with the United Nations Annual Commission on Status of Women (CSW) and supports the tenants of the UN’s International Treaty CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women).  I attended the Fundraiser for CSW Student Fellowship Program, which was an afternoon international tea-tasting reception.

WomenNC.org CSW Student Fellowship Fundraiser

The five students from North Carolina that have been selected to receive the WomenNC.org  fellowship awards were present at the fundraiser and I really enjoyed meeting several of them and finding out more about their particular area of interest.  I spoke with Hannah Nemer, a student at UNC Chapel Hill, who is doing her research on: Role of Media In Education, and I also spoke with Becca Bishopric, a student at N.C. State University, and she is doing her research on: Human and Sex Trafficking.  The other students; Anuja Acharya, Abby Bouchon and Mariamawit Tadesee were also there.  These young ladies will be gathering research on their specific women’s issues in North Carolina and then will travel to the UN Commission in New York City in early 2012 to present their findings at a UN Panel Discussion and will also attend various sessions.  How exciting for these young ladies and they truly are making a difference in the world, especially for women.

Vaji Dehghan serving tea

I’m looking forward to working with Beth on more WomenNC.org events.  I will be attending their presentations on February 16th 2012 at the NCSU Faculty Club.  The teas were very delightful at the fundraiser and I enjoyed tasting different ones and chatting with other guests.  Beth’s husband, Vaji, was one of the tea servers.  Vaji and Beth are the proud owners of Village Cleaners and Smith & Smith, CPA in Cary is proud to represent them.  Check out their website for locations and some valuable coupons!  They would be happy to help you with any of your holiday dry-cleaning needs, and think of Village Cleaners if you have any spills or accidents during the holidays (especially with all of those family members in town!)   Thank you, Beth, for introducing me to WomenNC!
