Growing Your Business Referrals

Carrie, Becca & Kim

Carrie, Becca & Kim

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of attending a presentation for Professional Working Women called “Grow Your Business: Referral Request Seminar”.  The event was hosted by Carrie Peele and featured guest speaker, Mary Cantando, Founder, of The Woman’s Advantage.  Carrie is the newly appointed Chair for the Triangle Chapter of The Woman’s Advantage and hosted her first event at the PNC Boardroom in Raleigh.  So many women business owners & working professionals struggle waiting for referrals to happen by “word of mouth”.  This seminar taught us how to stop waiting for them to happen and how to instead, MAKE the them happen!   Carrie and Mary also presented the opportunity to learn more about the Women’s Advantage Program and how ladies can sign-up to get involved.  I really enjoyed the class and was happy to have my friend & fellow ShopLocalRaleigh member, Kim Davis of The Paystub People along with me.   Kim and I worked as partners during the class and had a chance to share several times when Mary called on volunteers.   I can’t wait to take what I learned from this class and aplly it to my job as Director of Marketing at Smith & Smith, CPA.   WA-logo-PDF

Thanks to Carrie for the invite!  Please feel free to contact her to learn more!  Also a shout-out to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in the colorful Joy Joy summer dress!   Who said you can’t wear horizontal stripes!?!?!  Shop My Girlfriends Closet in downtown Apex and downtown Cary (MGC Oh-la-la) for great summer fashions & savings! Tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get 10% off your purchase!

Check out my office for the next week!  YEA!!!!  See you July 27th!

Shopping Local and Supporting Local!

ShopLocalRaleigh Final Friday Social

ShopLocalRaleigh Final Friday Social

Last Friday I attended the ShopLocalRaleigh Final Friday Social that was hosted in downtown Raleigh at a children’s boutique store called Nuvonivo.  I LOVE the Final Friday Socials and always enjoy meeting other members of ShopLocalRaleigh and getting to visit their stores.  A son and mother team owns the store and they were so nice and very gracious to be able to host for the month of April.

They are doing a clothing drive for the nonprofit group, Note in the Pocket and were collecting gently used children’s garments in exchange for NuvoBUCKS!!!  If you donated 1 jacket or 3 garments you were eligible to receive a $5 voucher (up to a $25 limit).  Well, with 2 boys at home, I ALWAYS have coats & jackets that are ready to be passed on to other kids, so I took two huge bags of clothing for the donation drive.  I also LOVE Note in the Pocket, I met them a few years ago at the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch and have been involved with them through my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club too.

Their Executive Director, Dallas, was at the Final Friday Social and shared their mission along with some of their upcoming events (Socks & Undie 5kRundie on Saturday May 10th).  The clothing drive is going to last until May 10th, make your donations at their store location (111 E. Hargett Street Raleigh NC).  I had a great time at the social and was happy to have my friend, Tia Coppus, of Bank of NC there for her first time with ShopLocalRaleigh.  After the social, I used my nuvoBUCKS to get a baby present for a family member, what a great store!  I am already looking forward to the ShopLocalRaleigh Final Friday Social at the end of May! ShopLocalRaleigh was also hosting a MAJOR event on Saturday…Brewgaloo (a local beer fest in downtown Raleigh that features local breweries and local food vendors/food trucks).  With the weather as nice as it was over the weekend…I am SURE Brewgaloo was a huge success!

After the social, Tia and I went over to the Southern Women’s Show at the NC State Fairgrounds.  I went to the show last year with Kim Davis and had a great time seeing friends and a few clients from Smith & Smith, CPA (The Cookie People had a VERY yummy display!)  The Southern Women’s Show comes once a year to this area and it’s a fun time with lots going on!  I made a few fun purchases and always enjoy seeing what’s ‘new’ on the market.  The event was FULL and lasted all weekend, so I am sure it was just as busy on Saturday and Sunday!

Success 2013 Review…Was it Really “America’s #1 Business Seminar”?

Lynn, Shelli & Becca at Success 2013

Lynn, Shelli & Becca at Success 2013

On Tuesday I attended the Success 2013 America’s #1 Business Seminar at the PNC Arena in Raleigh.  I wasn’t too sure about this event…it was advertised really heavily in the newspapers and mailers in the weeks prior, so I was a bit skeptical on what to expect.  The speaker line-up looked pretty good, but there wasn’t an agenda and it was an all-day event, so it was difficult to plan your day around the speakers you wanted to hear.  I knew several other people attending, so I gave it a go and figured I would at least walk away with some inspiration if nothing else.

I arrived a little after 9am and the program had officially begun at 8am.  I was really surprised that the entire arena wasn’t full at all.  I had pre-purchased VIP seats…which ended up being nothing more than just regular seats on the floor in folding chairs in really tightly packed rows (not at all the “VIP mix & mingle” section like the guy on the phone made it sound like).  I didn’t go to the VIP seats right away as there was a guy already talking, so I just sat with my friend Lorrie Walter of PPD up in the stands.  The first guy I heard said something kinda neat “There are three kinds of people in this world…1) those who take action 2) those who watch the action and 3) those who are left wondering what just happened”.  He also said “If you are ever feeling down, lonely and depressed…go do something for someone else and you will feel a million times better”.

The "VIP seating" at Success 2013

The “VIP seating” at Success 2013

After he finished (he did a big sales pitch for a seminar they have coming up soon) I made my way down to the “VIP seats” and sat with my friends Shelli Dallacqua and Lynn Shaw and heard Steve Forbes speak, which was really cool.  Steve Forbes talked about “Doing this differently” and how “taking risks is like baseball…if you never swing you will never get a hit”.  The last guy I heard speak was a man by the name of James Smith. He wasn’t even in the Success 2013 book, but he was probably the best one there.  He was by far one of the most candid and in-your-face speakers I have ever heard.

He had everyone laughing and gasping at the same time.  He really kicked in the sales pitch towards the end and it got a little old to me.  I knew there was going to be a ‘sales pitch catch’ with this whole event.  They urged everyone to ‘run quickly’ to the tables at the back to ‘sign up and get your spot for only this $$$ amount of money’.

Overall, Success 2013 was okay…not the best event and not the worst.  I’m not sure I would go again, I would certainly NOT purchase the VIP seats, as that is a joke. I did get some good tips and motivating points from Success 2013 but that is about it.  Thanks to Lois Cozart at My Girlfriend’s Closet for the great French Connection dress that I wore to Success 2013.  Mention Beccasblog.com at either store (downtown Cary & downtown Apex) and get 10% off your entire purchase!!

High School Career Fair with Green Hope

High School Career Fair

Last week I had the nice opportunity to participate in a High School Career Fair for Green Hope High School.  The event was held on campus from 8:30am-noon.  There were about 1,600 students that came through to visit, ranging in freshman to seniors and 33 careers that were being represented. The students had to choose one business/service to interview and had to research/ask questions in depth to complete their required worksheet.  I liked this idea as it got the students engaged and encouraged them to interact with the career vendors.  For this High School Career Fair I took my usual tablet-top display items for Smith & Smith, CPA but also included a really unique promotional/marketing item.  I ordered miniature patriotic rubber ducks from Oriental Trading Company and wrote “Smith & Smith, CPA” across the front of the ducks with a sharpie marker (to make it permanent).

I gave those out to the students who stopped by my booth to talk and they were a hit!  The students loved them because they were fun and cute and I loved them because they were unique and I was getting our CPA name in front of the kids on an item that they will more than likely keep for a while.  I’ll be ordering more of those rubber ducks to use at future events.  It just takes a little bit of time in the evenings at home to write “Smith & Smith, CPA” on the front.

GHHS Students

I really enjoyed the high school career fair and I always have fun talking with students and finding out about their future plans.  Especially the seniors, I love about hearing where they are going to school.  I talked to students who are going to attend the following schools: Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Wilmington, Appalachian, and East Carolina University (GO PIRATES!) I talked with the students about careers in accounting, marketing and how to start their own business.   I also told them about the requirements for becoming a CPA.  My table was right across from the NCACPA booth, so I was able to direct students across the way to speak with the NCACPA representative.

Oliva Scott of Promotional Partners

I saw my longtime friend, Oliva Scott of Promotional Partners at the high school career fair.  Olivia has strong ties to Green Hope and was featuring her company’s new logo (LOVE IT) and also a really cool new tabletop display that has a banner that runs across the top of the table!  Really cool!!!!  Contact her if you’d like to learn more about this product.

High School Career Fair

I took pictures of some of the students who stopped by; they sure do look happy don’t they!  It’s great to see students excited about accounting & marketing careers (haha)  I also had some of my cute lipstick Beccasblog.com pens that I ordered from my friend, Tobi Bowen of Your Brand Aide.  They are the COOLEST pens, they look like a real tube of lipstick but it’s actually a pen inside!  Tobi saw them through a vendor and thought of me right off the bat!  I’m very selective with them though and don’t give them out to everyone.

Smith & Smith, CPA enjoys taking part in local high school career fair events and other community happenings.  It’s important to us to be involved in all aspects of our community.
