Life Experiences Annual Auction and Golf Tournament

Friends of Life Experiences

Friends of Life Experiences

Last night was the 28th Annual Harry H. Montgomery Auction and Golf Tournament for Life Experiences.  It was such a fun night and a lot of planning and preparation went into making it such a successful event!  I was happy to help serve on the Auction Committee again this year and we had some really fantastic items up for bidding during both the silent and live auction.   Congrats to Mary Madenspacher, Executive Director, of Life Experiences for a wonderful night, lots of funds raised to support their mission and to Mary on her recent 20th Anniversary with Life Experiences!

Wheelbarrow Basket

Wheelbarrow Basket

Smith & Smith, CPA was happy to support the auction by donating a Wheelbarrow Basket full of Fall weather yard needs, such as a new rake, a new shovel, leaf scoop hands, yard waste bags and of course, a new wheelbarrow!   We also teamed up with one of our Smith & Smith, CPA clients, Leapfrog Landcare to include a $100 gift certificate for shrub, tree or plant treatment.  The Wheelbarrow basket looked really good and had lots of bids!  Thanks to all of our friends who came out last night and joined in on the celebration and fundraising for Life Experiences!  The event was held at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary and was sponsored by 8 local Rotary Clubs.  I’m so pleased to say that we had 11 members present at the event last night from our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club!   I am also happy to report that I was the ‘winner’ of several great auction items!  Blake never considers that ‘winning’ though……

Golf Tournament

Speaking of Blake, he is on the golf course today over at Prestonwood Country Club playing in the Life Experiences Golf Tournament!  We ended up getting to be a last minute team in the tournament, so Blake is over there today, along with Cam, Brooke and Dennis Sargent, giving it a go on the greens.  The weather is kinda ‘iffy’ out there to me…about 81 degrees and overcast, but muggy  I am sure they are having a great time. The Golf Tournament for Life Experiences was a 12:30pm shotgun start playing Captain’s Choice.   There will be refreshments, awards and recognition following the tournament later today at 6pm.  There are over 32 teams in the tournament today and they are playing on both courses at Preston.  Our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club also has 2 teams playing in the tournament today.  Good luck out there!  Thank you to Harold K. Jordan & Co. for being the Grand Patron Sponsor for the 28th Annual Harry H. Montgomery Life Experiences Auction and Golf Tournament!

And one last photo to share…last Thursday was the Cary Chamber of Commerce Business of Women Luncheon.   The Speaker was NC House of Representatives District 41, Gale Adcock.   Gale has been a friend of mine for several years now and her topic was “Diary of a Fresh(wo)man Legislator”.  I really enjoyed hearing her speak, as I always do!  I had a blast at lunch with friend Jessica Garcia and Linda Ward too!   Thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriends Closet for dressing me in the stylish red dress!  I had lots of compliments!

Potato in the Mail and More Fun Things!

Mail me a Potato by PotatoParcel.com!

Mail a friend a potato!

Mail a friend a potato!

So my blog today is going to be a little different and I’m gonna highlight some FUN things to share with you!  First of all…have you heard about this “Send a potato in the mail thing”??? SERIOUSLY!  My college best friend, Lindsey Dishman, told me about it a few weeks ago.  This guy, named Alex Craig in Texas started a company called PotatoParcel.com and he sends potatoes to people in the mail with messages on them.  Sounds crazy and kinda stupid right?  Well, since May 2015, he has averaged $10,000/month and has sent over 3,000 spuds in the mail!  Of course, I HAD TO DO ONE!  So guess who I sent one too?  Yelp, LINDSEY!  She didn’t have any idea I was going to send her one, but here it is!  She got it in the mail and sent me a picture.  SO funny.  If you want to read more of the story about Alex and his potato mail business you can.

My Berry Frozen FroYo

Mark at My Berry

Mark at My Berry

I’ve been loving the froyo (frozen yogurt) for years now!  One of my good friends in our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club, Paul Dube, recently purchased the My Berry Frozen Yogurt store in Apex, NC.   It’s VERY close to my house, so I went last week with our boys and some friends from Rotary.  We had a great time seeing Paul and the froyo was soooooo good!  Check out the big bowl that my 5-year old got!  He loaded up BIG TIME on froyo and TOPPINGS!  There is great indoor and outdoor seating and you can even ride your bike there and park it outside!  Also say HI to Paul if you see him there!

YUMMY!!!!!

NCSU GAME

And some more random things…Thanks to Rock & Lisa Hood, longtime client of Smith & Smith, CPA and the owner of Young Champions of America for giving us 6 tickets to the NCSU game this past weekend!  I went with my boys, plus Cam and his family (Blake was gone on a guy’s golfing weekend).  The tickets were great, the weather was perfect, the parking pass was a HUGE help and NCSU won!  Perfect night!!!!!  Check out our crazy family picture…amazing how the funny-crazy pictures turnout better then the ones when you try to get everyone to just SMILE!

Broadway Series South

Dirty Time!

Dirty Time!

And Finally, Blake and I went to see Dirty Dancing on Sunday night with friend, Dennis and Dana Sargent.   We purchased Season Tickets again this year for the Broadway Series South at Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh.  Dirty Dancing was the first show of the season and it was pretty good.   There was a lot of moving parts and quick scene changes, but overall it was good and of course, the music was great!  Thanks to Lois Cozart, owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary and downtown Apex for helping me select a really fun and unique top for the play!  Shop there and tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get 10% off your purchase!  They have a GREAT selection of Fall merchandise out now!

It was 14-Years Ago but We Still Remember 9-11

14-Years Later

14-Years Later

Hard to believe that 14-years ago we were watching the horrors of 9-11 unfold on our televisions.  I remember being in college at ECU that morning and was heading to RDU Airport to catch a plane to Phoenix, Arizona for a Leadership Conference.  Needless to say, I never left for the airport and that day will be remembered by Americans forever.  Thank you to our men and women in uniform who served and gave their lives that day to help others.  Our thoughts and prayers are always with the families who lost loved ones on 9-11.  I still get emotional each year as we watch and listen to the family members read the names out loud on the TV….

The CineBistro Is Open in Cary!  So is Diced in Cary!

CineBistro in Cary

CineBistro in Cary

The past few weeks have really been great in Cary!  So many NEW things are opening and it is causing a buzz around town!  This past week, I had the pleasure of attending the CineBistro VIP Party with Alicia.  Nearly everyone in town has been waiting for the CineBistro in Cary to open!  It seems like we heard about it a few years ago, but the day has finally come!  Last week Alicia asked me to go along with her and we had such a fun time!  CineBistro in Cary is located on the lower level shopping center of Waverly Place.  There is plenty of parking and it is easy to find.

Cozy Leather Recliners of the CineBistro in Cary

Cozy Leather Recliners of the CineBistro in Cary

CineBistro offers “Movies with a Taste”, meaning that you can order a full meal while enjoying the latest movie flick from Hollywood!  The front entrance opens up to a very nice ‘restaurant’ style bar’, with dark floors and exposed brick.  It’s very charming and elegant!  Not what I was really expecting at first.   Off from the bar area is a lounge and gathering area.  During the VIP party on Tuesday night, they had live music playing and a large ice sculpture carved with CineBistro logo.

Food! Not the best quality photo, but it was dark inside

Food! Not the best quality photo, but it was dark inside

Food was constantly being brought out by the servers from the kitchen and at one point, Alicia and I couldn’t keep up with all of the delicious foods!  We had the pleasure of tasting the Popcorn Shrimp, Mahi Soft Tacos, Moroccan Lamb Chops, Beef Filet, Wagyu Beef Sliders, Lump Blue Crab Cakes, plus a huge selection of desserts like their Cineful Chocolate Cake and Caramelized Banana Cheesecake!  SOOOOOOO GOOD!  At one point we were right outside of the kitchen doors and were able to have first choice of the food samples coming out of the kitchen!  We took a tour of the whole facility and they offer 6 different theater rooms, seating from 40 (in the smaller rooms) up to 80 (in the larger rooms).  The chairs are cozy leather recliners and they offer full-service in-theater dining.

Ice Sculpture

There is a full bar available to serve fine wines and signature cocktails (even during the movie!).   Children must be accompanied by an adult and the CineBistro of Cary is ADULT ONLY starting at 6pm.  Movie tickets can be purchased on Fandango.com or in person at the theater.   If you are planning to order dinner, then you need to arrive at least 30 minutes before the movie showing.

walk in the woodsMovie tickets range in price from $12.50 to $14.50 and you select your seat when you purchase, so that is no getting stuck with a sold out theater or the awkward seat in the front row.   Menu prices range from $11.50 to $29.00 and YES, you can order popcorn!  Also nice to note is that you DO NOT have to order a meal to see a movie at the CineBistro in Cary.  The movies are open to anyone who wants a pampering movie-going experience.  During the VIP party, they were offering a complimentary screening of the new movie, A Walk in the Woods.  Alicia stayed for the movie and enjoyed the leather recliners and the whole overall movie experience!   The CineBistro in Cary, NC makes the 9th location for them nationwide!   Thank you for the invite Alicia and I look forward to going back to the CineBistro again soon!

Another new restaurant that recently opened in Cary is DICED Gourmet Salads and Wraps.   They are located right down from Trader Joes in Cary at the intersection of Cary Parkway and Kildaire Farm Road.   My Final Friday Friends lunch group met there last week and it was really good!  You stand in line when you arrive and the staff ‘makes’ the salad for you, similar to a Moe’s.   Once you get to the end of the food line, they dump your salad into a bowl, add the dressing, and chop it up very fine.  I love salad that way!  The owner,  Mary-Rose Woodward, was there and chatted with us for a long time.  We enjoyed hearing about their story and are thrilled to have Diced in Cary!  I love how close it is to my office and I am sure this will be one of my favorite places to eat during the work week!  Also happy to see that they joined the Cary Chamber! Click to add a blog post for Diced Gourmet Salads & Wraps on Zomato

Charity Golf Tournament and Cleveland School Rotary Club

Hearts & Hooves Golf

Hearts & Hooves Golf

Yesterday, Blake and I had the pleasure of playing in the 2015 Hearts & Hooves Golf Tournament.  The event was held at Prestonwood Country Club and brought together these two amazing non-profit organizations.  If you have read my blog before, then you have heard me talk about Corral Riding Academy (the Hooves part).  Blake and I have been involved with Corral for many years now and just love everything about them.  A few years ago my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club did a District Grant Project with Corral and installed their outdoor arena lights so that their classes and horse-therapy could still take place during the Fall/Winter months when it gets dark outside at 5pm.  I wasn’t familiar with Advancing the Heart (the Heart part of the golf tourney) but they were established in 2012 by Dan Matthys and their mission is to advocate and participate in research for cardiac innovation.

Great day to golf!

Great day to golf!

Blake and I were matched up with two other players and had a fantastic day out on the golf course.  It was a toasty hot day, but there was a nice breeze and eventually the sky had several big clouds pass over and gave us some much needed shade!  Our other teammates decided that playing 18-holes wasn’t going to work with their time frame & other plans for the day, so they left around the 11th hole.

Last Hole!

Last Hole!

That was kind of interesting, but Blake and I played on and enjoyed finishing up the tournament together. We joined the other teams for a late afternoon lunch inside of Preston and while we didn’t win (not even coming close!!) we still had a great time and know that we helped raise funds for two worthy organizations.  Thank you to all of the volunteers from both Corral and Advancing the Heart for all of the handwork and time that went into making this a fun golfing event.

Cleveland School Rotary Club

Cleveland School Rotary Club

The 4th Annual GlobalRun4Water is right around the corner too!  I’ve been part of this great event since the beginning and our 5K date is quickly approaching on Sunday, September 27th.  This morning I had the pleasure of attending the Cleveland School Rotary Club and sharing with them all about the 4th Annual GlobalRun4Water.  This was my first time visiting this club, but I already knew several of their club members from making friends at the Rotary District 7710 Conference in New Bern earlier this year.  They gave me such a warm welcome this morning and a big THANK YOU to Club President, Julie Barefoot, for inviting me to speak.  Julie is a CPA at John D. Adams & Co, CPA in Garner, NC.   She has a lot of energy and Rotary is blessed to have her!

Hard to believe that this is the LAST week in August!   Make it a great one!

Memory Cafe of Cary through Rotary

Memory Cafe of Cary with Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club Friends

Memory Cafe of Cary with Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club Friends

This week the Memory Cafe of Cary celebrated its 1-Year Anniversary.   This is the joint project among the 5 Rotary Clubs in Cary, NC as a way to honor 50 Years of Rotary in Cary (the 50th Celebration was in August 2014).   The Memory Cafe of Cary is held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month  at Bond Park Senior Center and offers a free evening of dinner, entertainment and social interaction with those in our community who have a loved one struggling with Alzheimers disease.  Our attendance has steadily grown over the year and we have really gotten to know and love many of the regular attendees.  The Memory Cafe of Cary is staffed each month by volunteers from the 5 Rotary Clubs, we come together to set-up, serve the meal, interact with the guests and clean-up. It has become a favorite event of mine each month!  We have seen many friendships form between the guests and they even have started to request being able to sit together each month and ask if their friends have arrived yet at check-in.   Check out the video below to watch the live entertainment from our 1-Year Anniversary celebration this week!  They love the music and we are always looking for volunteers to provide the entertainment!

Cary Chamber Rewards Trip 2015

Cary Chamber Rewards Trip 2015

Last week was the Cary Chamber of Commerce Annual Membership Drive Rewards Trip.  This was my 9th year in a row earning a spot on the trip and we had a wonderful time in Cancun, Mexico!  We went to a resort called Secrets Playa Mujeres.  It was beautiful and an all-inclusive resort.  We had 18 traveling in our group and had wonderful weather and a very enjoyable mini-vacation in Mexico!   The trip is awarded each year to those who are the top producers in the Membership Drive.  Many thanks to Lois Cozart, Owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex and MGC Oh-La-La in downtown Cary, for helping me select some beautiful dresses to take along with me to Mexico!  We have a fancy dinner every night while on the trip and Lois had the perfect selection of dresses in her stores for me to choose from!

Last week I also had a chance to have lunch with my dear friend from ShopLocalRaleigh, Kim Davis.   Kim and I have been friends for several years and are always bouncing ideas off each other when it comes to marketing and networking.  We have a new idea in place for a marketing round-table and it is something that we could both really benefit from.  The idea is still a work in progress but stay tuned!  We had lunch at the Red Monkey Tavern at Crabtree Valley Mall.  Thanks again to Lois from My Girlfriend Closet for dressing me in the casual blush colored tank from Ann Taylor!

Celebrating 20 Years in Business with Smith & Smith, CPA

The Smith & Smith, CPA family

The Smith & Smith, CPA family

Well….we MADE IT!!  Yesterday was the 20th Anniversary for Smith & Smith, CPA!  That means, 20 years ago, Robert G. (Bob) Smith, started a CPA firm here in Cary, NC.  And over the years it has changed locations several times to accommodate growth, changed names to reflect the growth and accomplishments and also added staff (most of whom are family).  We have also grown the business in both areas of our small businesses for monthly accounting work and tax returns for annual filings.

Smith & Smith, CPA

Smith & Smith, CPA

Bob started 20 years ago after he left the health care industry and ventured over into private accounting and tax.  He started in a very small, one-room office and had just part-time employees for the first 9 years.  I was his first full-time employee hire in 2004 and we are now in a 2,300 sqft office with 6 full-time employees!  It’s one thing to really like your job, but it’s another thing to really like your job AND like the people you work with, especially when they are family!   Alicia Angell was hired in 2012 as our first non-family hire, but we’ve grown to love her like family and always enjoy seeing her girls when they come by the office.  There are 7 ‘office kids’ here at Smith & Smith, CPA and they range from age 20 with the oldest (Avery) to age 4 with the youngest (Bailey).

Last night we had a big 20th ANNIVERSARY Celebration dinner at our house.  Everyone came and we had a great time looking back on old memories, making crazy office jokes, talking about our favorite work memories and giving Bob a quiz on ALL THINGS Smith & Smith, CPA.  He did really well at the quiz!

We ended the celebration with a homemade 20th Anniversary Cake and sang ‘HAPPY ANNIVERSARY’ to Bob (set to the tune of Happy Birthday) and let him blow out the 20th Anniversary Candles…well, you have to watch the video to see who ACTUALLY blew out the candles.  Click to watch the video below!

We’d like to say THANK YOU to all of our clients, friends, families and referral partners who have supported us through the years.  Cary is a WONDERFUL place to work and do business and we are so happy to be part of this community.   We are always open to new clients and appreciate your referrals.  Thank you again to Bob Smith for providing Smith & Smith, CPA as a safe and wonderful place to work.  We are providing for 4 families from this office and look forward to 20 more years in business serving our clients and our community!

Cheers to 20 Years in Business for Smith & Smith, CPA!
