Vote for the Gifting Tree in Downtown Cary

Vote for our Tree!

Vote for our Tree!

For a second year in a row, Smith & Smith, CPA is proud to participate in the Gifting Tree Project as part of the downtown Cary Holiday CelebrationThe Gifting Tree Proejct is hosted by Town of Cary and sponsored by The Mayton Inn (the brand new boutique hotel in downtown Cary that will open in 2016).  The Gifting Tree Project invites community members, non-profits, service clubs/groups and small businesses to decorate a Christmas Tree on the Town Hall Campus.   The trees can be decorated in anyway you like and with any theme idea, however, there are just a few rules including no food decorations and that your ornaments need to be weather-resistant (the trees are outside and in the loop around the campus).  The community is invited to cast a vote online for their favorite tree and the winner of the The People’s Choice with the most votes will have a donation of $500 made to the non-profit of their choice.

Rotary Tree

Rotary Tree

I went downtown last week to decorate our tree.  There is some really good competition this year with 24 trees in the race!  As part of the Board of Directors for Life Experiences, if our Smith & Smith, CPA tree wins, we will have the donation of $500 made to them! YEA!  I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see that happen!  Please take time to VOTE.  You can only vote ONCE per email address, so vote carefully!  I do have to give a shout-out to a few of the other trees in the Gifting Tree Project.  Check out the tree that was sponsored by the 5 Rotary Clubs in CaryThe Rotary Clubs of Cary Christmas Tree!  All 5 clubs worked together to make the ornaments and decorate the tree.  It reflects all of the great work and good projects that we do in the world.

Super Cute Tree

Super Cute Tree

Also take a look at the tree from My Girlfriend’s Closet.   I LOVE their creativity and all of the ribbon and tulle on the tree.  They also added the arms from one of the store mannequins holding their sign.  So creative!   So please take time over the next 2 weeks to VOTE online for the Town of Cary Gifting Tree Project. The voting period is December 5th through December 19th.  And remember, it is ONE vote per email address, so multiple votes from the same email will not count.  Please consider Smith & Smith, CPA as your top vote and let’s get that $500 to Life Experiences!  It will make a big impact for them!

Where to View Christmas Lights in Cary and the 19th Annual Art Ball

Smith & Smith, CPA at the 19th Annual Art Ball

Smith & Smith, CPA at the 19th Annual Art Ball

WOW!  I’ve kinda taken a short break from my blog, but honestly I didn’t mean too!  The end of November was really crazy with the 19th Annual Art Ball for Cary Visual Art taking up a LOT of my time.  I was happy to serve Cary Visual Art as the Co-Chair for the event this year.  Smith & Smith, CPA is a proud Sustaining Sponsor for Cary Visual Art.  Blake, Cam, Brooke and I were in attendance and had a great time representing our CPA firm and our commitment to keeping art alive and thriving in the Cary Community.  It was a SUPER fun night, lots of glam, dancing, art and food! image thank you Thanks again to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet and her staff for helping me with the final touches on my Art Ball gown & accessories!  There were SO many gorgeous dresses that night!  I also loved seeing Blake all dressed up in his tux.  We ‘unofficially’ dubbed ourselves as the King and Queen of the Art Ball!  So enough on that…Back to my lack of blogging   We had Thanksgiving and were out of the office for most of that week.  Hopefully you had a nice Thanksgiving holiday too and you have recovered from all of the turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes, plus any family you had in town!   So that is my lame excuse for not blogging much in November.   But I’m BACK and ready to blog up a storm in December!

View Christmas Lights in Cary

So this time of year, you always hear people talking about the BEST places to view Christmas lights in Cary.  Which house has the most, who has theirs set to music, which neighborhood is best, etc.  I found a really great website that talks about viewing Christmas lights in Cary and other surrounding areas.   It is called Fun4RaleighKids.com and they have ALL KINDS of great holiday & Christmas events and sights listed.  When you click on the Holiday Lights image at the top, you will then get to select the area in which you want to view Christmas Lights.  Pretty cool!  There are several listed in our area, so Blake and I will have to take the boys out soon to view the Christmas lights in Cary!  A family favorite every year!

It has certainly been a full and busy week!  I have a full list of events and activities to recap and I want to start with something that really had an impact on my life!

Joe Dittmar – Survivor of 9-11

Joe Dittmar, Survivor of 9-11

Joe Dittmar, Survivor of 9-11

Last night, my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club had the pleasure of hosting Joe Dittmar as our guest speaker.  Joe was in a business meeting on the 105 Floor of Tower Two of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.   Joe was the last one of the room of 54 insurance executive to leave the room and was one of seven in their meeting to survive that day by making it out of the tower alive.  Joe shared his personal story with us last night and presented it in a way to encourage us to always remember and never forget the lives that were lost that day.  I’ve been in Rotary for over 8-years and this has to be one of our most memorable programs.  Joe doesn’t charge a fee to speak and travels around the country shearing his story.  If you ever get the opportunity to hear him speak, don’t pass it up!

WBON of Cary Mega Networking

Lia, Lois and Heidi

Lia, Lois and Heidi

On Wednesday, WBON of Cary (Women Business Owners Network) hosted their Annual Fall Mega Networking Event at Prestonwood Country Club.  This is a great networking event every year.   All of the women in the room get a few minutes to share about their companies and how they work with their clients.  They always hold a contest for the most creative, most unique and most memorable.   Here is a cute pic of Lois Cozart (My Girlfriend’s Closet), Lia Sa (Fleur de Lia Alterations) and Heidi Simpson (Heidi Approved).   These three ladies will be holding an event together next Tuesday, November 17th at the My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex.  Call the store for details!

The Fall weather has been great this week, so it is time to bust open those Fall & Winter storage boxes and bring our your cooler weather wardrobe!   And speaking of My Girlfriend’s Closet, I had a great selection of Kate Spade sweater dresses from their stores to wear this week!  Lois has her stores up-to-date and stocked with the latest Fall trends and fashions (Such as: Logs of BLING, Lady Loafers, chic black boots, fringe and of course Plaid Plaid Plaid! ) Both of these dresses are NOW available in their stores for purchase and are very flattering on any shape.  The sweater fabric is thick and warm, just perfect for cool Fall days!

C.A.R.T. Fund Week and Shopping for Art Ball Dresses!

C.A.R.T. Fund

CART Week event

CART Week event

Earlier this week my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club was happy to co-host with the Cary Central Rotary Club, a special event in honor of C.A.R.T. Week for the C.A.R.T. Fund.  Just what is the C.A.R.T. Fund you ask?  Well, it stands for Coins for Alzheimer Research Trust.  This was a program started by a Rotarian in SC back in 1995.   He had a family member who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer disease and he wanted to raise funds for innovative research.  cartfund_bucket_logo_lg2So they started putting out BLUE buckets on the tables at their weekly Rotary meeting and asking members to put in their coins and loose change.  The idea of the CART buckets began to spread to other Rotary Clubs and is now being done in over 700 clubs in over 8 different states!  All, meaning 100% of the money donated goes to research and development to find a cure for Alzheimer disease.   So our two clubs teamed up to bring in a guest speaker to talk about the status of the cure for Alzheimer and what you can do to protect yourself.   We also had a speaker who updated us on the CART Fund status and grants that are being given out to research institutions.  Together our two clubs were able to raise $1,400 for the C.A.R.T. Fund!  Thank you to everyone who came and participated!

Can You Get Out?  Tic Toc Escapes in Raleigh

Tic Toc Escapes

Tic Toc Escapes

Earlier this week had a really cool invite to join the other bloggers from ShopLocalRaleigh for a night of adventure!  We went to the NEW Tic Toc Escapes in Raleigh.  Just so happens that one of the owners, Marylu Lawrence, is a friend of mine!  Marylu and her family are the PROUD local owners of this really cool place! (and they have been clients of Smith & Smith, CPA for several years too!)   Escape rooms are a fairly new concept to the Raleigh/Triangle area, but they have been growing on a global basis for a while now.

Owners of Tic Toc

Owners of Tic Toc

So just want is Tic Toc Escapes and what in the world is an escape room (I can hear my mom asking me that question now!)  So as described on their website, an escape room is a real-life, interactive game where players work together to escape themed rooms by discovering clues and solving puzzle challenges before time runs out!   We were a group of 8 and some of us knew each other and some of us didn’t…that played into an interesting part of our escape room experience, but I will get to that later.

ShopLocalRaleigh

ShopLocalRaleigh

We gathered around 6pm at Tic Toc (located near Hayes Barton Diner) and had a very nice and warm greeting by Mary Lou and her family.   They told us about escape rooms, how they work, the ins and outs and the dos and don’ts.  A big part of this is to have fun but to also encourage participants to NOT share the room details or puzzles with other people afterwards.  You want to encourage them to attend and try it on their own.  It’s like telling the end to a great twisted movie to a friend before they can even see it!  DON’T DO THAT!

Will we escape alive!?!?

Will we escape alive!?!?

I can tell you this part though…our ‘theme’ game was that we were a rock band and were supposed to go on stage in one hour for thousands of our screaming fans…but we realize the door to our room is locked!  We had 1-hour to escape and a giant clock with ticking down the seconds!   I really had a blast and loved the whole escape room experience!   I do think it is best to do the escape room with 2-4 people and with friends/family that you know really well.  I had fun with the other bloggers from ShopLocalRaleigh and I had my good friend, Lisa-Gray, along with me too, but we were at the cap limit of 8 people per room.   There are lots of clues and locks to figure out and if you  have a smaller group, it will be more intense and you can be more involved in the whole process. tic toc So did we get out???? Yes, we did, but we had to ask for several hints along the way and our time ran out, but they gave us extra time because we were on the right track.   I can’t wait to go back and take Blake!  I also want to take my dad to try it out too as he is very good with puzzles!   Thanks to Tic Toc Escapes and Marylu and family for hosting us!   Go try them out!   Tell them you read about them in Beccasblog!  And thanks to Lois Cozart, owner of My Girlfriend’s Closest in downtown Cary and downtown Apex….she dressed me in the beautiful Kate Spade navy and green stripped top.   They have a fantastic selection of Fall and Winter fashions, shoes and accessories!   Tell them you read Beccasblog.com and get 10% off your total purchase!

Julia Wins the Contest!

Congrats Julia!

Congrats Julia!

I am so very proud of my cousin, Julia Fountain!  We just found out that she won 1st place out of 48 entries for a logo contest in her hometown of Aiken, SC!  Julia’s winning logo will appear on all locally grown and manufacture goods and products.   We are so proud of her and her hard work and achievement!  She was awarded a $250 check and it took her a little less then 3 hours to complete her design.  Julia has always been very talented and does freelance work for companies, so give her a shout if you need logo/graphic design work!  She helped Smith & Smith, CPA with our Tax Season Food Drive logo too!

Cary Women’s Giving Network, Time with Wells Fargo and Some Early Halloween Fun!

It has been a busy week and it is only Wednesday!  This last week of October has really gone fast!

Cary Women’s Giving Network

Cary Women's Giving Network

Cary Women’s Giving Network

On Monday I joined the other ladies of the Cary Women’s Giving Network for our monthly gathering.  We had a delicious lunch together at the Matthews House (Bistro Lunch every Monday) and hosted Ellen Fort from the Lucy Daniels Center as our guest speaker.   Ellen is just a few months into her new role with the LDC, so she is still getting her ‘feet wet’ within the organization.  We had about 15 women in attendance for lunch and a few visitors.  The Cary Women’s Giving Network is part of the Cary Community Foundation and as associate with the North Carolina Community Foundation.  It was a nice cool crisp Fall day, so we took a group picture outside in the gardens of the Matthews House.  I love this group and the work we do in our community!   Thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in the warm tunic sweater.  It had great Fall colors and my necklace was something that I won at the Life Experiences Auction in September.

Lunch with Wells Fargo

Wells Fargo Lunch and Learn

Wells Fargo Lunch and Learn

One of the best things about the women’s network that I just mentioned, are the relationships that form within the group.  I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Pam Keene, Vice President of Business Banking with Wells Fargo, through both the GWGN and other groups over the past 11 years.  Pam and her co-worker, Mike Lynch (SBA Lending for Wells Fargo) hosted lunch for our CPA firm this afternoon.  Part of Pam’s job includes meeting with clients and referral partners to make sure there is a strong relationship and that the lines of communication are open and clear.

Pam & Mike of Wells Fargo with Alicia and Blake of Smith & Smith, CPA

Pam & Mike of Wells Fargo with Alicia and Blake of Smith & Smith, CPA

They brought lunch from City Barbeque into Smith & Smith, CPA and we had a very productive lunch meeting learning more about the products and services of Wells Fargo.   We share several mutual clients with Wells Fargo and having Pam and Mike to use as a resource and a reference is a huge asset for us!  We want to make sure clients needs are taken care of and by having a direct contact, it just makes everything run smooth on both sides!   Our entire office was able to sit-in during the “lunch and learn”.  Thank you to Pam and Mike for reaching out to us and for the delicious lunch!

Woodhaven Fall Festival

Smith & Smith, CPA Halloween Bags

Smith & Smith, CPA Halloween Bags

And now a cute little post-weekend photo!  Halloween started early for the Smith crew last weekend.  We attended the Annual Fall Family Festival at Woodhaven Baptist Church, located just a short distance from our house.  I think this is the 7th or 8th year in a row that we have attended.  The kids love it as they get to dress in their costumes, play in the bounce house, enjoy all kinds of games with prizes and have a blast.   We love it because it is outside and free!   They offer a yummy hotdog dinner and it’s a great family-fun atmosphere.

Family Fun at Woodhaven

Family Fun at Woodhaven

They do a trunk-or-treat at the end of the evening and have all kinds of cars & trucks decorated.  It is so fun to see each year!  And while you can’t see them very good in this picture, all of the Smith kids (Trent, Connor, Mark and Bailey) are using the Smith & Smith, CPA Halloween bags that we purchased a few years ago.  They were part of a marketing project and I still have a few left over, so the kids carried them to collect candy and goodies at the event.  They are nice durable bags and have our name & logo along with Trick-or-Treat Safety Tips on the side.   And yes, they got lots of good candy!  Thanks to Woodhaven for hosting this event each year!

tic tocTonight I am off to see the new Tic Toc Escape Room in downtown Raleigh!  ShopLocalRaleigh is hosting a bloggers event there tonight….stay tuned to the blog tomorrow to see how it went…and if we escaped!

Ready to Roll & Back in the Saddle

Texas NASA Museum in Houston

Texas NASA Museum in Houston

So my blog has been on a little bit of a break….we were gone to Texas for a 10-day family vacation and it really was an awesome time!   It was our first time to Texas and the first time for our boys to be on an airplane, so lots of fun.  We went to Houston, San Antonio, New Braunfels, San Marcos and Austin.   Perfect weather and many memories!   I did keep an eye on my work email while we were gone (I mean, can you ever ‘really’ get away from emails anymore???) but I didn’t do any blogging while we were gone.  And this week back to work has gone SO FAST!   So here it is Friday and I wanted to get a blog posted so that my blog didn’t end up in the ‘blog cemetery’!

Governor’s Award for Rotary

Governor's Award

Governor’s Award

One of my goals this year was to earn the Rotary District Governor’s Award.   This is a new award this year, started by our Rotary District Governor, Newman Aguiar.  In order to earn the Governor’s Award, you have to complete three specific things by the end of December 2015.   The three steps are: 1) Bring in a New Member to Rotary 2) Make a donation to the Rotary Foundation and 3) Perform an act of Service in your Rotary Club.   I am pleased to say that I have completed all three tasks and last night I was presented with my Rotary pin for the Governor’s Award!   Many thanks to District Governor Nominee, Donna Peffley, for attending our meeting last night and presenting the award.  I am thrilled!  Donna has a tradition of giving a pineapple to all of the award winners when she presents their pin, hence the pineapples in the picture.   I do love a pineapple, being that I was a Hospitality Management undergrad at East Carolina University many years ago, the pineapple was our symbol, so the gift of the pineapple was very special to me.

Charlie, Donna & Becca

Charlie, Donna & Becca

I am also happy to have Kelly Gates of the Kraft Family YMCA as my new member!   Kelly is super and is going to bring so much energy and opportunities for us to be involved in the community through her work with the YMCA.   Congrats also to my fellow club member, Charlie Hatch (and fellow ECU Pirate!) for earning his Governor’s Award pin last night too.   Charlie and I are the 3rd and 4th members of our club to earn the pin!  I hope we have many more by the end of December!   And a BIG thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in the BEAUTIFUL blue Michael Kors dress!  It was a fantastic color and easy to wear!   Check them out for all of your Fall & Winter wardrobes.  They have been doing buy-outs the past few weeks and have tons of gorgeous merchandise in their stores!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get 10% off your purchase!

Rotary District 7710 4th Annual GlobalRun4Water

12049676_952833971456908_6598997034390797818_nThis past weekend was the 4th Annual GlobalRun4Water.  Another year of a very successful event for Rotary District 7710!  I’m so proud to have been able to help and serve on this committee again this year.  We really had a huge boost in participants and were thrilled with how many people showed up on race day…even in the humid and rainy drizzle!

Smith & Smith, CPA was a proud sponsor and it was fun to have our family out there, Blake and Trent ran in the 5k.  Cam and his family also came out to support and participate too.    We had over 381 gallons of water carried during our signature 1-Mile Water Carry Challenge too!   The Cary Rotary Club won that competition by carrying 102 gallons!  A big THANK YOU to all of our awesome sponsors, Rotary Clubs, friend and family who came out to help raise awareness and FUNDS for clean water projects all around the world!  I am excited to see the impact our projects from the 4th Annual GlobalRun4Water will have this year and the years to come!

I love community service, especially when our kids and entire family can be involved.  Our church, Triangle Community Church, is hosting a Fill 2 Bags & Deliver 2 Tons Food Drive for the Holly Springs Food Cupboard.  It’s called a BUMPER CROP Harvest.   Brown paper bags were given out at church last week and next Sunday, you bring them back full and leave them in-front of your car bumper and the church staff goes by to pick them up.  We took the boys shopping this week and worked hard to fill our bags!   I love a food drive as it is very easy to get kids, even the young ones, involved in helping others in our community.

And one last night…a VERY Happy Birthday to my mother-in-law…Sharon Smith.  We are going to be gone on vacation during her birthday this year, so we took her out for an early birthday dinner over the weekend.
