Don’t Forget About Your Child Tax Credit!

Tax credit child trentWhenever a client comes in the door to drop-off their tax materials for their personal tax filings, we always ask them “Have you had any changes in the past year”.  Sometimes they will says YES, they moved, new address, got married, new job, changed emails, sold stock, bought a rental property, etc.  MOST of the time, people will remember changes that happened in the past year.  But do you know WHAT they forget to tell us about the MOST!?!  NEW BABIES, thus their Child Tax Credit!!  Especially those clients who have children earlier on in the year…so come January-February of the following year when they are here to drop-off their taxes, they have somehow TOTALLY forgotten the new baby!  We want them to remember this for their Child Tax Credit!  Click HERE for more ways your children can help on your tax return and learn more about the Child Care Tax Credit!

Dinner at Fearrington, The Granary

ferringtonLast weekend, we went out with some friends to celebrate some February birthdays.  It was a fun time, we took a limo bus to Fearrington Village and had dinner at The GranarySO GOOD!  We had the whole upstairs to ourselves and enjoyed the entire evening!  I had only been to Fearrington one time before and I am so excited to go back again soon!  Here is a picture of my friend Andrea and me.  Andrea is wearing a BEAUTIFUL blue dress from My Girlfriend’s Closet and I am wearing one of my FAVORITE necklaces from there too!  I love this necklace as it is reversible and can be worn as either black circles or white circles!

February is for FUN!

Mardi Gras!

Mardi Gras!

I think I say this EVERY YEAR, but hands-down, February is STILL my FAVORITE month!  From Mardi Gras, to Super Bowl and celebrating birthdays and Valentine’s DayWOW, just SO MUCH to celebrate!   So I’ll start with Mardi Gras…each year, the Cary MacGregor Rotary Club puts on a HUGE Mardi Gras Kick Off BASH!  This year, the 9th Annual event was held at The Atrium in Regency Park in Cary.  Live music was provided by The Back of the Boat Band, and there was Live Auction, Silent Auction, Raffle Auction, plus over 25 different food, beverage and dessert vendors!  All of the proceeds from the event went to Life Experiences, plus other local charities and humanitarian projects in the community.

Smith & Smith, CPA

Smith & Smith, CPA

I’m a proud Board Member for Life Experiences, so we are always excited to attend this event!  Blake and I did a sponsorship on behalf of Smith & Smith, CPA and invited our whole office to attend.  Cam and Brooke were not able to go due to a family event, but Alicia and her mom came along and we had the BEST time!  From the fun and colorful Mardi Gras face masks, to the delicious foods, dancing and auction bidding, we really enjoyed the WHOLE time!  My Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club had many members there too and was proud to support our very own club member, Mary Madenspacher, Executive Director for Life Experiences.  There was over 400 people there and from what I have heard so far, the preliminary numbers show that it was a SUCCESSFUL event for ALL!

Super Bowl 50

Super Bowl 50

Super Bowl 50

We were SO proud to have the Carolina Panthers in the 50th Super Bowl!  We had a lot of friends and family over to our house and celebrated the game together.  We sure were hoping for a Carolina Panthers Super Bowl WIN, but alas, as you know, they just couldn’t get it together to beat the Denver Broncos!  We did have some Denver Broncos fans in the house though, as our good friends, Tia & Ethan Coppus are DIE-HARD Broncos fans!

Birthday Celebration

happy 60th bobWe have TWO office birthdays at Smith & Smith, CPA in the month of February…still not as many as we have in July (3) and November (3) but it’s a month of birthdays for Bob and me!   Bob turned the BIG 60 on February 4th and we celebrated with Krispy Kreme donuts (HOT NOW sign was ON), plus a brownie cake made by Brooke and a fresh fruit display from Edible Arrangements.  My birthday rolled around yesterday and I had SO MUCH fun having friends stop by with flowers, treats, goodies, hugs and cards!

Goodies from friends & Southern Oak Gift Co.

Goodies from friends & Southern Oak Gift Co.

They sure do know how to make a girl feel LOVED!   Once special gift was from a new friend & neighbor, Shea Armstrong.  Her business is called Southern Oak Gift Company and she provides gift boxes, bags and baskets for ALL occasions.  She brought me a beautiful red box of goodies yesterday and I am just smitten with her company!  Blake took me out last night to Full Moon Oyster Bar for a birthday dinner with friends.  What a YUMMY place!   Thanks for all of the birthday love!  February, you have been good to me!  Tax season is cranking up BIG time, so all of the fun in February makes it a little less…taxing.  🙂

Thank You Note Handwritten Means the MOST

Handwritten note for Blake Smith, CPA

Handwritten note for Blake Smith, CPA

I am sure we have all heard this before, that there is something really powerful about a handwritten thank you note!  I know my mom has said it for YEARS, and it really is true.   Blake received a very nice handwritten thank you note from a new client at Smith & Smith, CPA earlier this week.  Blake shared the note with me, and WOW, it really does make a difference!  The client thanked Blake for taking time to meet with him, he told him he was impressed with his professionalism, capability, knowledge and demeanor.   Way to go Blake!  And how nice for this guy to take just a few minutes and write that note to Blake.  So it is true, a handwritten thank you note DOES go a long way!   Take time today to write a note to someone who has made a difference in your life…it will make a difference in their day for sure!

Bike ride on the Greenway!

Bike ride on the Greenway!

I had the opportunity to slip away for the weekend and went down to Charleston to visit my college best friend, Lindsey.  She recently purchased her first house (YEA!!!  Congrats Lindsey!!)  In case you didn’t know the real estate market in Charleston is a TOUGH one!  So I’m so proud of her for being patient and waiting for the right house!  We spent the whole weekend painting and working towards getting her house ready for move-in!  Let me tell you...painting is hard work!  But when you do it with a friend, it can be fun and actually very rewarding to stop and look at your work.   We did find time to slip out for a bike ride on the West Ashely Greenway…and the weather was PERFECT!

Red Coat at My Girlfriend's Closet

Red Coat at My Girlfriend’s Closet

Speaking of the weather…it really does seem to be kinda up down, cold hot, etc right now.  On those cold days, I LOVE a great coat!  Check out this red jacket from My Girlfriend’s Closet!   I mean, seriously, does it stand out or what on that coat rack of black jackets!  I took this photo last week at my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club meeting.   Lois and her girls at MGC have all kinds of great and COLORFUL coats and jackets that can carry you from the colder winter days, right into the chilly Spring morning, I mean, after all it is Groundhog Day and the groundhog DID NOT see his shadow, so Spring is coming early!   Tell Lois you read Beccasblog.com and get 10% off your total purchase!

Tax Tips with Smith & Smith, CPA

Everyone loves to ask us for those ‘secret‘ and ‘all importanttax tips for filing your 2015 Tax Returns.  Here at Smith & Smith, CPA, we are proud to publish an article again this year with CaryCitizen on 2015 Tax Filling: What You Need to Know.  I met Lindsey and Hal, owners of CaryCitizen, several years ago and I see them often at Cary Chamber of Commerce events and networking meetings.   They do a really great job of capturing all the things in, around and about Cary.   I use CaryCitizen as a major resource and enjoy working with them each year on a tax filing article.  So take a read and let me know what you think!  Was it helpful?  Any ideas on some tax tips that I could include for next year?

Rotary Leadership Institute for Zone 33 in Cary, NC

RLI with Rotary Friends

RLI with Rotary Friends

A few weekends ago I had the pleasure of attending the RLI Zone 33 Annual Meeting and New Faculty Training.  RLI stands for Rotary Leadership Institute and it is the leadership and training course for Rotarians.   I attended the first 3 parts of RLI several years ago before I became Club President of the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club, and even wrote about it in my blog.   One of my friends & mentors in Rotary, Leigh Hudson, asked me back in the Fall of 2015 if I would consider attending the New Faculty Training in January for Zone 33 (Maryland to SC) that was going to be held here in Cary, NC.

RLI Leadership Challenge

RLI Leadership Challenge

So of course I said YES, and I’m so glad I did!   The New Faculty Training lasted the entire weekend and taught different technique and styles that are used for facilitating a RLI Course.  I learned SO MUCH from the training!  I made new Rotary friends from other states, and learned about the different adult learning styles, which is really interesting!  I’m a I & IV style learner, here is the link if you want to learn more and find out which style you are.  The weekend conference also included an all day session on Saturday for Rotary club members who were taking RLI Courses in Part I, II and III.   Once you complete all 3 courses, you are then an RLI Graduate and qualified for the RLI Faculty Training.  RLI Faculty can facilitate a course anywhere in Zone 33.

Marie, Leigh and Becca. 2 New Faculty Graduates

Marie, Leigh and Becca. 2 New Faculty Graduates

So I can travel from Maryland to Virginia, Tennessee and the Carolinas and help with RLI classes.  I’m so excited to get started!  The event was held in Cary at the Hilton DoubleTree, a very nice property.  All of the faculty had dinner together on Saturday night at Tony’s Oyster Bar, a place I had not been too in a LONG time!  Thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex for dressing me for the whole RLI Faculty Training weekend!   Lois and her team have beautiful clothing for every style and shape of women!   They are having a BIG Jewelry sale this weekend with 20%-35% off!  Stop by and see them!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com and they will take EXCELLENT care of you!

Tax Class for 2016 and Let’s Party for Christmas!

Tax Class Seminar

Tax Class Seminar

You would probably not think that Tax Classes and Christmas Parties go hand-in-hand, but around here they kind of do.   You see, each year, the CPA’s and accountants in our office have to go through tax classes and earn CPE Credits to keep their license to practice tax.  The guys at Smith & Smith, CPA take a 2-day course in Greensboro that is put on by the Don Farmer Tax Seminar.  Now I know that sounds REALLY exciting and you are jealous that you can’t go!  So all joking aside, it is a really good course, they learn all about the new tax laws and changes and come back with their heads spinning on the new info!  Alicia is also taking her tax classes this week, but she stays close to home and completes her courses in Raleigh.  The guys are out of town in Greensboro for their big seminar.

Life Experiences Christmas Party

Life Experiences with Rotary Friends

Life Experiences with Rotary Friends

Earlier this week we had the Life Experiences Christmas Party.  It really is the BEST party of the year!  I’m proud to serve on the Board at Life Experiences and their Christmas party is a time when all of the clients, staff, Board, and families can come together to share a pot luck meal, meet each other, sing songs, and best of all, open gifts!  They each trade names and bring a special present for each other.  The clients also get a brand new Life Experiences t-shirt, something that they LOVE and truly Cherish.

Full House for the Party

Full House for the Party

Each year, one of the clients gets to dress up as Santa Clause and give out all of the gifts.  Mary Madenspacher, Executive Director for Life Experiences, also takes the microphone around to each one and let’s them say their name, introduce their families and say really whatever they want.  It’s a hoot as you never really know what is going to be said!  We had a great time at the party and I’m so proud to have many of my fellow Rotarians from the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club there with me!  Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet for the beautiful black and white polka-dot dress.

Union Bank Christmas Party

Friends of Union Bank

Friends of Union Bank

Union Bank also had their Christmas Party this week.  My good friends, Jessica Register and Julie Clark, work for Union Bank and were kind to invite me to their office party.  Union Bank hosted their 2015 Wake County Christmas Open House at their Cary location, 111 Commonwealth Court, and had a huge crowd of clients, friends, Chamber members, Rotarians, and community leaders in attendance.  Jessica and I have been friends for several years now and have been on the Cary Chamber Membership Drive Rewards Trip together for the past 2 years!

Shop Local!

Shop Local!

Jessica and I both LOVE to shop and we LOVE consignment stores because you can find the best deals without having to pay a ton of $$$$.   Don’t we both look holiday-cute!?!  I’m wearing a black and white stripped sweater (it has some shine to it) from My Girlfriend’s Closet (stores in downtown Cary and downtown Apex).  I could have worn it with a black skirt, but I think the red makes it much more festive and styled for the holidays!  Jessica is wearing a black and white sweater too, her’s has some sequence sewn it, is hard to see in the picture, but in person it was very pretty and had a lot of texture and sparkle.  Jessica got her sweater from Classic Clothiers Consignment Boutique in Cary.  Her shoes (cute wedges) were from My Girlfriend’s Closet.  Why shop at the high dollar stores when you can shop local and get great deals!

Bass Pro Santa Shout-Out

Bass Pro Santa

Bass Pro Santa

And finally, I have to do a Christmas Shout-Out to my work friends…we meet once a month for lunch.  Earlier this week we had our December Christmas Holiday Lunch at Rally Point in Cary.   We have done different Christmas gifts and exchange parties over the years…this year we decided to do a Christmas Wrapping Paper Exchange!   Everyone brought 2 rolls of wrapping paper (or 3 gift bags) and we put them down inside of a black trash bag.  We then drew numbers and took turns grabbing gift wrap out of the bag, OR, you could steal the gift wrap from someone else.  Apparently the Snowman gift wrap is VERY popular among my friends!

All I want for Christmas

All I want for Christmas

After lunch, we went over to Bass Pro Shop in Cary and had our group picture made with Santa Clause.  I mean, how much fun is that !?!?!   I love Bass Pro Shop, even though I don’t hunt and I only fish with my parents.   They have all kinds of cool things in their store!  Plus I got to ride a 4-wheeler out front (well, not really, but I did pretend).  And one final THANKS to My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in this gorgeous Lilly Pulitzer Blayney Ruffle Dress.  The weather has been SO WARM this week,  I knew this colorful dress would be perfect!   Shop at My Girlfriend’s Closet and mention Beccasblog.com to get 10% off your Total Purchase!

ALSO, please remember to VOTE for our Smith & Smith, CPA tree as part of the Town of Cary Gifting Tree Project!!!  Voting goes until Saturday December 19th!  Winners gets $500 to the Charity of their Choice and ours would go to Life Experiences!

Vote for the Gifting Tree in Downtown Cary

Vote for our Tree!

Vote for our Tree!

For a second year in a row, Smith & Smith, CPA is proud to participate in the Gifting Tree Project as part of the downtown Cary Holiday CelebrationThe Gifting Tree Proejct is hosted by Town of Cary and sponsored by The Mayton Inn (the brand new boutique hotel in downtown Cary that will open in 2016).  The Gifting Tree Project invites community members, non-profits, service clubs/groups and small businesses to decorate a Christmas Tree on the Town Hall Campus.   The trees can be decorated in anyway you like and with any theme idea, however, there are just a few rules including no food decorations and that your ornaments need to be weather-resistant (the trees are outside and in the loop around the campus).  The community is invited to cast a vote online for their favorite tree and the winner of the The People’s Choice with the most votes will have a donation of $500 made to the non-profit of their choice.

Rotary Tree

Rotary Tree

I went downtown last week to decorate our tree.  There is some really good competition this year with 24 trees in the race!  As part of the Board of Directors for Life Experiences, if our Smith & Smith, CPA tree wins, we will have the donation of $500 made to them! YEA!  I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see that happen!  Please take time to VOTE.  You can only vote ONCE per email address, so vote carefully!  I do have to give a shout-out to a few of the other trees in the Gifting Tree Project.  Check out the tree that was sponsored by the 5 Rotary Clubs in CaryThe Rotary Clubs of Cary Christmas Tree!  All 5 clubs worked together to make the ornaments and decorate the tree.  It reflects all of the great work and good projects that we do in the world.

Super Cute Tree

Super Cute Tree

Also take a look at the tree from My Girlfriend’s Closet.   I LOVE their creativity and all of the ribbon and tulle on the tree.  They also added the arms from one of the store mannequins holding their sign.  So creative!   So please take time over the next 2 weeks to VOTE online for the Town of Cary Gifting Tree Project. The voting period is December 5th through December 19th.  And remember, it is ONE vote per email address, so multiple votes from the same email will not count.  Please consider Smith & Smith, CPA as your top vote and let’s get that $500 to Life Experiences!  It will make a big impact for them!

Where to View Christmas Lights in Cary and the 19th Annual Art Ball

Smith & Smith, CPA at the 19th Annual Art Ball

Smith & Smith, CPA at the 19th Annual Art Ball

WOW!  I’ve kinda taken a short break from my blog, but honestly I didn’t mean too!  The end of November was really crazy with the 19th Annual Art Ball for Cary Visual Art taking up a LOT of my time.  I was happy to serve Cary Visual Art as the Co-Chair for the event this year.  Smith & Smith, CPA is a proud Sustaining Sponsor for Cary Visual Art.  Blake, Cam, Brooke and I were in attendance and had a great time representing our CPA firm and our commitment to keeping art alive and thriving in the Cary Community.  It was a SUPER fun night, lots of glam, dancing, art and food! image thank you Thanks again to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet and her staff for helping me with the final touches on my Art Ball gown & accessories!  There were SO many gorgeous dresses that night!  I also loved seeing Blake all dressed up in his tux.  We ‘unofficially’ dubbed ourselves as the King and Queen of the Art Ball!  So enough on that…Back to my lack of blogging   We had Thanksgiving and were out of the office for most of that week.  Hopefully you had a nice Thanksgiving holiday too and you have recovered from all of the turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes, plus any family you had in town!   So that is my lame excuse for not blogging much in November.   But I’m BACK and ready to blog up a storm in December!

Christmas Lights in Cary

View Christmas Lights in Cary

So this time of year, you always hear people talking about the BEST places to view Christmas lights in Cary.  Which house has the most, who has theirs set to music, which neighborhood is best, etc.  I found a really great website that talks about viewing Christmas lights in Cary and other surrounding areas.   It is called Fun4RaleighKids.com and they have ALL KINDS of great holiday & Christmas events and sights listed.  When you click on the Holiday Lights image at the top, you will then get to select the area in which you want to view Christmas Lights.  Pretty cool!  There are several listed in our area, so Blake and I will have to take the boys out soon to view the Christmas lights in Cary!  A family favorite every year!
