My job as the Director of Marketing for our CPA practice is very unique.   It is mainly unique because of the size of our firm.  You’ll find marketing people in the bigger CPA firms, but not necessarily in ones our size.  Therefore I embrace the uniqueness and really challenge myself to embrace the opportunity I have to SHINE as the Director of Marketing for Smith & Smith, CPA, P.C.   As I’ve gotten further and further into my marketing position, I’ve found that marketing people ‘think’ differently from others, we tend to look at opportunities from a different angle and we push the envelope on how a product/service can be placed, noticed and most importantly…SOLD!  We follow marketing trends and thrive on unique selling points.  I love meeting other marketers and having ‘brain-storm’ sessions with them. 

Leon Rawitz

I was recently introduced to Leon Rawitz of Fail Proof Marketing.  Leon and I were introduced through a mutual friend, Jay Barish of Symmetry Financial.  We meet for coffee last week and I’m very impressed with Leon’s take on marketing and his background experience.  Leon is also a fellow blogger, click HERE for some of his recent work.  After meeting with Leon, I went over to meet with another new marketing friend, Stacey Shanahan of CDS Productions.  Stacey and I met through WBON a few months ago.   Stacey is also known as “Web Video Raleigh” and helps clients take their message to the web with high quality-produced business videos.  She also offers service for graphic design and personal videos.    Stacey and I spent an hour discussing marketing trends that we are seeing evolve in our line of work.  Stacey also keeps a blog on her website, and it is a great resource for marketing people!

Marketing Trends

 I did some quick research the other day for marketing trends in 2012 and found this great article called “2011 and 2012 marketing trends – “Be On The Cutting-Edge, Not the Bleeding-Edge”.  The article is fantastic as it highlights 10 marketing trends that small business owners should start incorporating NOW in order to be positioned well for success.  I was happy to see that our CPA firm is already doing nearly all of these marketing trends!  You can click to read the whole article, but I’ll go ahead and summarize the top 10 marketing trends:


1-Build reliable brand advocates (NOTE: those face-to-face networking groups really DO work!)

2-Excell in one area rather then being ALL things to ALL people  (NOTE: That is why our CPA practice specializes in small-medium size business accounting, payroll and tax.  We choose NOT to sell insurance, provide financial planning, etc.  BE EXCELLENT at the services you offer, not just mediocre)

3- Create quality content as a viable marketing tool (NOTE: this fabulous BLOG that you are reading now!)

4-Moving more marketing dollars to social media (NOTE: yes yes yes!  We hired Eric Green of Eric Green Marketing back in early spring of this year and he’s been a huge resource to me for social media & Internet marketing)

5- Tracking brand reputations on the social web in greater detail (NOTE: pay attention to your reviews online and also get clients to write positive reviews for you on your Fanpage, LinkedIn, etc., THEY WORK!!!)

6- Increase in branded online experiences to meet diverse consumer needs (NOTE: trying to reach all markets through Facebook, LinkedIn, Youtube Marekting page, etc.)

7- Pursuing Mobile Marketing

8- Geo-Targeting and localized marketing will become a top priority

9-Accepting that silo marketing is ineffective  (NOTE:  You HAVE to cross-brand!)

10- Co-Marketing to boost returns and lower marketing costs (NOTE: Promotional partnerships!)

 Keep in mind that our CPA firm in Cary is growing and currently taking on new clients.  We’ve changed our firm name to Smith & Smith, CPA, P.C. as Blake recently received his CPA license!  We are expanding into the office next door and we are hiring more staff.  We also have a BRAND NEW website up, check it out!  Even with lots of great growth and changes taking place, we are never too busy to help a small business owner with their accounting/tax needs.  We welcome referrals!  PS:  I am still looking for good support for the We Build People Campaign for the YMCA.
