Rotary Leadership Institute for Zone 33 in Cary, NC

RLI with Rotary Friends

RLI with Rotary Friends

A few weekends ago I had the pleasure of attending the RLI Zone 33 Annual Meeting and New Faculty Training.  RLI stands for Rotary Leadership Institute and it is the leadership and training course for Rotarians.   I attended the first 3 parts of RLI several years ago before I became Club President of the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club, and even wrote about it in my blog.   One of my friends & mentors in Rotary, Leigh Hudson, asked me back in the Fall of 2015 if I would consider attending the New Faculty Training in January for Zone 33 (Maryland to SC) that was going to be held here in Cary, NC.

RLI Leadership Challenge

RLI Leadership Challenge

So of course I said YES, and I’m so glad I did!   The New Faculty Training lasted the entire weekend and taught different technique and styles that are used for facilitating a RLI Course.  I learned SO MUCH from the training!  I made new Rotary friends from other states, and learned about the different adult learning styles, which is really interesting!  I’m a I & IV style learner, here is the link if you want to learn more and find out which style you are.  The weekend conference also included an all day session on Saturday for Rotary club members who were taking RLI Courses in Part I, II and III.   Once you complete all 3 courses, you are then an RLI Graduate and qualified for the RLI Faculty Training.  RLI Faculty can facilitate a course anywhere in Zone 33.

So I can travel from Maryland to Virginia, Tennessee and the Carolinas and help with RLI classes.  I’m so excited to get started!  The event was held in Cary at the Hilton DoubleTree, a very nice property.  All of the faculty had dinner together on Saturday night at Tony’s Oyster Bar, a place I had not been too in a LONG time!  Thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex for dressing me for the whole RLI Faculty Training weekend!   Lois and her team have beautiful clothing for every style and shape of women!   They are having a BIG Jewelry sale this weekend with 20%-35% off!  Stop by and see them!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com and they will take EXCELLENT care of you!

Rotary District 7710 4th Annual GlobalRun4Water

12049676_952833971456908_6598997034390797818_nThis past weekend was the 4th Annual GlobalRun4Water.  Another year of a very successful event for Rotary District 7710!  I’m so proud to have been able to help and serve on this committee again this year.  We really had a huge boost in participants and were thrilled with how many people showed up on race day…even in the humid and rainy drizzle!

Smith & Smith, CPA was a proud sponsor and it was fun to have our family out there, Blake and Trent ran in the 5k.  Cam and his family also came out to support and participate too.    We had over 381 gallons of water carried during our signature 1-Mile Water Carry Challenge too!   The Cary Rotary Club won that competition by carrying 102 gallons!  A big THANK YOU to all of our awesome sponsors, Rotary Clubs, friend and family who came out to help raise awareness and FUNDS for clean water projects all around the world!  I am excited to see the impact our projects from the 4th Annual GlobalRun4Water will have this year and the years to come!

I love community service, especially when our kids and entire family can be involved.  Our church, Triangle Community Church, is hosting a Fill 2 Bags & Deliver 2 Tons Food Drive for the Holly Springs Food Cupboard.  It’s called a BUMPER CROP Harvest.   Brown paper bags were given out at church last week and next Sunday, you bring them back full and leave them in-front of your car bumper and the church staff goes by to pick them up.  We took the boys shopping this week and worked hard to fill our bags!   I love a food drive as it is very easy to get kids, even the young ones, involved in helping others in our community.

And one last night…a VERY Happy Birthday to my mother-in-law…Sharon Smith.  We are going to be gone on vacation during her birthday this year, so we took her out for an early birthday dinner over the weekend.

ShopLocalRaleigh 4th Friday Social

Happy COLD Friday!!!  January is going by fast, only one more Friday left in January 2014.  Today was the 4th Friday Social for ShopLocalRaleigh.

4th Friday ShopLocalRaleigh Social

4th Friday ShopLocalRaleigh Social

We all gathered this morning at Joint Venture Jewelry & Peachy Keen in Cary, NC.  The 4th Friday Social is a monthly event that is offered by ShopLocalRaleigh to all members and guests.  Each month it rotates around to different locations in the Triangle Area.  The event is from 8:30am-10:00am and involves some FRESH coffee, light refreshments and lots of great networking.

Mica, Laura, Becca and Robin

Mica, Laura, Becca and Robin

I arrived shortly after 9:00am this morning…having to get two boys to two different schools and then drive across town was a time crunch for me, but I made it work and got there in time for the large circle networking.  The large circle networking is everyone’s favorite part; we form a large circle and then go around one at a time to meet each other.  Jennifer Martin, the Executive Director for ShopLocalRaleigh, always gives us a question or topic to discuss during our introductions.

Donna, Karly and Kim

Donna, Karly and Kim

This morning she asked us to identify an issue or concern that we are seeking help with as small business owners.  We had lots of new first time visitors at the social this morning, which is always great, as we want ShopLocalRaleigh to keep growing and growing and growing!  I had a nice conversation with Gary Chvatal, owner of Flicko’s Video Workshops in Cary; it was his first time at a ShopLocalRaleigh event.  The more people we can get to shop local and spend local, the better off we will all be as small business owners.

Yummy Cupcake!

Yummy Cupcake!

I enjoyed meeting some of the new members/visitors and really liked the cupcakes that were made by Laura McMillan, Baker & Decorator of Confectionate Cakes.  Jen Hankin, Director of Communication for Peachy Keen & Joint Venture Jewelry, spoke to the group about their Dinner & Diamonds Facebook Contest.  The contest features submitted photos from Facebook followers who are defining “What is Love”, they are then asked to get their friends to vote (you can vote daily) for their photos.  What’s a stake you ask…wellll…. winner with the MOST votes gets Diamond Stud Earrings from Joint Venture Jewelry and Dinner for TWO ($150 value) at Oro Restaurant in Raleigh!  Blake and I have submitted a picture, so I would REALLY appreciate your votes!  You can vote once a day between NOW and Feb 11th.   They are also giving away prizes for Cutest Couple and Best Definition of “What is Love”.

"What is Love" for Dinner & Diamonds

“What is Love” for Dinner & Diamonds

They will award the winners at their Valentine’s Day Panic Party on Wednesday, February 12th.  Great idea and being a member of ShopLocalRaleigh gives JVJ and PK a fantastic opportunity to promote and grow not only the contest…but also their business!  Join us for the NEXT 4th Friday ShopLocalRaleigh social at Ray Price Harley-Davidson in downtown Raleigh (February 28th).  I got a super cute shoulder bag at Peachy Keen during the social, one that I’ve had my eye on for a while, and I can’t wait to carry it!

Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet of downtown Cary and downtown Apex for styling me on this COLD Friday morning in the colorful BCBG Maxazria wrap dress and the Stella & Stevie San Francisco leopard faux-fur jacket (wearing in the contest picture).  They are having their WINTER Clearance Sale right now!  Stop by to see them!

Tax season is in full swing!  We are accepting new clients and the phones & emails are very busy with inquires for service and appointments are coming in strong.  Thank you so much!  We love working with all of our clients and we appreciate your business!  Thank you for referring to Smith & Smith, CPA!

Expert Advice from Your Local CPA

Hello!  Well, I took a little break there from blogging for a few days, okay, actually it was more like 11 days, but who is counting right?  I hope you have enjoyed the holiday break and that all is well with your family!  We sure did have a nice time around our house and enjoyed seeing lots of family, friends and spending some good quality time together.

Blake Smith, of Smith & Smith, CPA

So I have a question for you…did you see it?  You did right?  I mean, you know what I am talking about?  I know you saw it…you MUST HAVE!  I hope you are not asking yourself “What in the world is she talking about!?!?!”  Well, let me fill you in…Blake was featured in the News & Observer (in Raleigh and also in Charlotte) in the “ASK THE EXPERTS” section on Tuesday, December 24th.  So I  KNOW you saw his picture and expert advice to small business owners in the paper!  He was featured in the ShopTalk section of the paper that comes out every week on Tuesday.  Blake was asked to give advice to small business owners for things they could do in 2014.  His advice included centralizing your expenses and checking your bottom line to stay on top of your finances in 2014.  It was a great article and highlighted 3 simple things that small business owners can do that will make a BIG difference for them in 2014. Here is the link to the article, hope you will read it!  Thanks to Virginia Bridges of the N&O for working with Blake on this article.

NC Governor Pat McCrory & Awards Celebration

NC Governor Pat McCrory

NC Governor Pat McCrory

Last night was the 2013 Cary Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet, held in the Grand Ballroom at the beautiful Prestonwood Country Club.  I look forward to this celebration with the Cary Chamber every year!  It is always so much fun to go and see so many business friends and celebrate another fantastic year.  The event this year was particularly exciting as the NC Governor, Pat McCrory, was the keynote speaker.  The evening event quickly sold out and there was a long waiting list for those who still had high hopes of getting a ticket to attend.   The evening began with a social/cocktail hour at 6 pm, followed by dinner & program at 7 pm.

Chamber friends & Ambassador of the Year

Chamber friends & Ambassador of the Year

Upon arrival, you were greeted by the wonderful staff at Prestonwood Country Club with a glass of wine and some delicious hors d’oeuvres.  I was sitting at one of the Board of Directors tables with my good friends Claire Smith, Kyle Greer, Rob Alexander, and Barry Mitsch.  Kathy Burns started the evening with a welcome & prayer. I’m so happy for Kathy as she has had a fantastic year serving as Chair for the Cary Chamber.  Last night served as her final event and she passed the gravel at the end of the program to the Incoming Chair, Frank Shell.

Becca & Michelle Muir

There was a special announcement by Highwoods Properties announcing where the MetLife facility will be built and located in Cary.  The keynote address included “a conversation” between Tamara Barringer, NC Senator, District 17 and NC Governor, Pat McCrory.  It was a very candid conversation with the two of them seated on stage in big overstuffed chairs.  Barringer lead the conversation by asking the Governor several questions about his past few months in office and even asked him to explain his ‘typical day in office’.  I enjoyed the conversation  and it was really cool to see lots of media & security all around the edge of the room.  I’ve never seen the Grand Ballroom so FULL!  After their conversation ended, it was time for the Special Awards Presentation.  I was so honored to have been asked to present the Ambassador of the Year Award.

Inviting the Governor to the Art Ball

Inviting the Governor to the Art Ball

I was nervous when I took the stage (there were 400+ people out there!!!!), but a deep breath and smile helped me be cool and collected.  The Ambassador of the Year Award is voted on by all of the Ambassadors that year and it’s always such a privilege & honor to win.  This year, the award went to my friend (and Membership Drive travel companion), Alison Guthrie.  Cary Mayor Harold Weinbrecht presented the next award, Business of the Year, to Highwoods Properties.  The final award, Citizen of the Year, was presented by Steve Zaytoun and went to the Stephens brothers for all of their work & business integrity as part of Cary Oil Company.  After the event ended, Claire and I made our way to say hello to Governor McCrory.  Claire is part of the committee for the 2013 Cary Visual Art Ball that will be held on November 17th and she wanted to get the opportunity to invite Governor McCrory to the event, and she did!  Fingers crossed that he will be able to attend.  Way to go Claire!

Delicious dessert at Prestonwood!

Thanks so much to the Cary Chamber and the staff for all of their hard work and dedicated hours to make the event last night such a huge success and lots of fun!  I think everyone had a great time!

Thanks so much to my favorite shopping place in town, My Girlfriend’s Closet, for the beautiful dress that I wore!  Lois knew it would be a great fit and it was it!  Thanks also to Ashley who owns & manages the downtown Cary store location for helping me with jewelry and shoes!  They really know fashion and know how to dress anyone and keep it within your budget.  I had lots of compliments on my dress!  Way to go MGC!  Go shopping there and tell them Becca sent you!

Cary Chamber Planning Conference

Planning Conference

Planning Conference

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of attending the Cary Chamber of Commerce Planning Conference.  This was my 3rd year in a row attending the conference down in lovely Pinehurst, NC.  The Planning Conference is a time for leaders in the community to spend time together determining the direction for the coming Chamber year in order to create the 2013-2014 Business Plan.  I always enjoy the Planning Conference as I get to meet and network with many of our local leaders, politicians and volunteers.  This year we stayed at The Carolina Pinehurst Resort, such a beautiful property!!!  The agenda on Wednesday included listening to different seminars, speakers and topics that featured everything from a Wake County Update by Wake County Commissioners to a Roundtable Discussion on Imagine Cary.

Coming to Pinehurst in 2014

Coming to Pinehurst in 2014

We gathered for an evening social and then had dinner with Keynote Speaker, Don Padgett, II, President of Pinehurst.  He talked about he US Open 2014 Men’s & Women’s Tournaments that will be held at Pinehurst.  Thursday was a spent working in small groups in breakout work sessions with the different Vice Chairs, followed by an afternoon golf game.  I’m pleased to serve the Cary Chamber again this year as Vice Chair for Member Business Services.  I had a wonderful time at the Planning Conference, enjoyed spending time with friends and would like to say “GREAT JOB” to the 2012-2013 Cary Chamber Chair, Kathy Burns.  She did a fantastic job leading the Cary Chamber this past year and I admire her for all of her leadership!  As always, I look forward to the Planning Conference next year!  Thanks also to My Girlfriend’s Closet for great dresses to wear at the Planning Conference!  My Girlfriend’s Closet is having a BIG SUMMER SALE this weekend, go check them out and tell them you read about them in Beccasblog.com!

Congrats to CPA Inauguration Honorees

Alicia at her CPA Inauguration

Smith & Smith, CPA is very excited to announce that Alicia Angell recently attended the 2013 CPA Inauguration. The event was held on Wednesday, June 19th at the Grandover Resort & Conference Center in Greensboro, North Carolina.  The CPA Inauguration honored those in North Carolina who had completed all of the requirements and had been approved by the CPA Board.  This was something that Alicia had been working towards and was very much looking forward to the whole evening.  We are so proud of her and are pleased that she works at Smith & Smith, CPA. Read more about her special night below.

Alicia and her family

Alicia and her family

The front of the program featured a quote by Abraham Lincoln that read “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other”.  There were around 90 honorees at the program on June 19th.  Her husband, John, her mom, dad, and aunt, joined Alicia at the CPA Inauguration.  Alicia and her family had the pleasure of sitting with Myran Jacobs and his wife from Matthews, NC and Shenghao Melody Song of Romeo, Wiggins & Company, LLP, with her husband from Raleigh NC.

She also talked to Elena Baker from Morehead City, NC who works for Frank H. Gainey CPAs.  Congrats to Myran, Shenghao, Elena and Alicia for being CPA honorees also at the event.  The evening began with a welcome reception, followed by dinner & opening remarks by Cynthia Brown, CPA, CEBS 2013-2014 Chair-Elect for the North Carolina Association of CPAs.  Jose R. Rodriguez, CPA and part of the North Carolina State Board of CPA Examiners did recognition of the New CPAs.

The evening concluded with the Administration of the Oath by Beth A. Wood, CPA and North Carolina State Auditor.  After the CPA Inauguration, all of the honorees gathered in the hallway for a group picture that will be published later this year on the front page of the NCACPA Interim Report.  Alicia and her family had a wonderful time at the event and enjoyed the entire evening.  Alicia joined Smith & Smith, CPA in the Fall of 2012 and brings 15 years of experience to the firm in the areas of retail, construction, mortgage, restaurants and landscaping.  Alicia is a NC State University graduate and lives in Cary with her husband and three daughters.  She is a joy to have at Smith & Smith, CPA and we have enjoyed introducing her to clients and customers.

Math & Science For Kids & Families

Math & Science Night

A few months ago I received an email from Allison Wrenn, Director of Finance & Education at the Cary Chamber of Commerce about a Math & Science Night at a local elementary school.  Farmington Woods Elementary was looking for local business owners who had businesses that were related to math & science to participate in their evening expo.  Alison heads up the Cary Chamber Education Committee and Principle Pierce of Farmington Woods IB/PYP Magnet Elementary School had asked Allison to share the email invitation with the committee.   I’ve been a member of the Cary Chamber Education Committee for many years, so I was very excited about this opportunity!  Clearly our business, Smith & Smith, CPA fits nicely into the ‘math’ part of the Math & Science night, so I went to work on getting my expo booth plans laid out and thinking of activities I could do to engage the children in some fun math and money learning.

Smith & Smith, CPA Halloween Bags

I used my normal vendor booth stuff, but also included a few more ‘new’ marketing props.  Mr. & Mrs. CPA Pig made their appearance and I also used my new GIANT American Flag umbrella as a good center piece and had pieces of fake money hanging down.  It looked really neat, though I must admit that the umbrella base was CRAZY heavy carrying in from the car.  There were three other vendors there with me for the event (there was supposed to be 8 of us total, but Principal Pierce said that four of them had backed out earlier this week!)

Talking with kids about Math & Money

I had also ordered really cool Halloween bags with our logo on the back plus safety tips and a giant pumpkin face on the other side.  They are great bags, I’m very pleased with the way they turned out!  They are good and sturdy with handles.  The kids and parents really liked them!  I’ll also be giving them to some local preschools and kindergarten classes to use for their Halloween parties at the end of October.  One of the best marketing tools yet!

Waddell & Reed- Remy

The other vendors were; College Nannies and Tutors, Waddell & Reed and Feed the Bin.  We all worked really well together and I gave out fake dollar tickets to students as they came by and encouraged them to visit Remy Heskett(Waddell & Reed) at her booth behind me to register to win one of her giant piggy banks!   The PTA had a meeting before the Math & Science event started and after that we had tons of kids & parents stop by to say hello and check out our stuff.  I was soooooo thankful to have my sweet friend, Autumn LaBarca there.

College Nannies & Tutors

She was a big help to me!  I talked wit the kids about money and knowing how to count different bills, use money to buy items vs. just a credit card and how you can have a career that works with money (CPA, banker, financial advisor, etc.).  There were other classrooms throughout the building that had different Math & Science events & activities going on.  The main area for our booth & expo was held in the cafeteria. I really enjoyed talking with the kids and even saw some friends and clients!

You need to know MATH!

I love having Smith & Smith, CPA involved in our schools, especially programs & events like this.  It’s an easy way to help bring real-life-work-experience into the schools & classrooms.  I hope the kids & families had a great time! I’d like to thank the Cary Chamber and Allison Wrenn and Principal Pierce for such a great experience!

Koko FitClub Ribbon Cutting

The Cary Chamber really gets going strong with events in the Fall and they ended September with their Eye Opener Breakfast, hosting candidates for the NC House and NC Senate.  It was a nice opportunity to get to see many of the candidates face to face and to hear their position on different issues.  A few hours after the breakfast, I attended the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for new Cary Chamber Member, Koko FitClubChuck and Anne Cook are the franchise owners and are very excited about Koko FitClub and what it has to offer to the community.  A large group of Ambassadors turned out for the ribbon cutting and we were able to tour the club and enjoyed yogurt cups and fresh coffee.

Kok FitClub Workout!

Check out this picture of Autumn LaBarca of Capital Financial Advisory Group and Meg Moraites of the Cary Chamber giving one of the elliptical machines a whirl!  Even in heels!   I had a nice time seeing my Ambassador friends and I’m really trying hard to make it to as many ribbon cuttings for new members as I can.  It’s important to me as Vice Chair for Member Services that all Chamber members feel value and worth in their membership to the Cary Chamber.   And I love my awesome Eva Franco blue & black fitted shift dress from My Girlfriend’s Closet of Cary!  My necklace is from there too…Lois & her girls really knows how to dress women, for any type of occasion or event.  Hope you are shopping there! I know I am!

 Local to Global

WomenNC.org

The WomenNC.org hosted their NC University Women Featured at the United Nations Presentation Dinner Forum on Thursday, February 16th 2012 at the NC State University Club in Raleigh, NC.  This was a highly anticipated dinner by many in our area and around 200 people attended the evening event (despite the crazy weather and heavy rain that made the arrival/check-in and parking a challenge!).  WBON of Cary (Women Business Owners Network) was a proud event sponsor and we had several ladies from our group at the event.  We were pleased to be part of such an amazing event and it is impressive to see the WomenNC.org work so hard to help take local issues to a global level.   As an event sponsor, WBON had a nice booth display in the welcome lobby and our booth was inviting with a candy buffet of assorted yummy treats.  We had the opportunity to tell everyone who stopped by about WBON and promoted our upcoming Annual Charity Fashion Show & Fundraiser (March 14th2012) as well as our scholarship program that is offering $4,400 in scholarships this year to Wake County female business owners!  It was very exciting to see the young women recipients of the of WomenNC 2012 CSW Fellow program.

CSW Fellows Dinner

They were so proud to have their families and friends there to support them.  One dad was there all the way from Minnesota to support his lovely daughter.  Anita Sivakumar (WomenNC President) started the evening off with a warm welcome and introduced Tamara Gibbs (WTVD ABC Eyewitness News Team) as the evening emcee.  Tamara introduced each of the CSW Fellows, and they took turns presenting their topics/findings to the crowd.  The girls will be traveling to the United Nations 56th Annual “Commission on the Status of Women” in NYC where they will represent North Carolina and present their research in a panel presentation as well as take part in dozens of conference sessions.  They will also have the opportunity to interact with people from over 200+ countries and 400 NGO’s.  After their trip, they will continue to present and share their findings with universities, non-profits and public forums all across the state of North Carolina.

WBON Booth for WomenNC.org

WBON of Cary was proudly represented by Becca Smith (current WBON President and Direct of Marketing for Smith & Smith, CPA), Ruth Drum (IT Chair for WBON and representing Crossroads Business Center), Autumn LaBarca (Fundraising Co-Chair for WBON and Sales & Marketing Director for Doctors Express Urgent Care of Cary), Annie Cook (WBON member and owner of Koko FitClub of Cary), Barbara Petty (former WBON member and owner of BOOM! Magazine) and Becca Thomas (friend of WBON and of Moe’s Catering in Cary).
