Fundraising Luncheon for SafeChild & 6th Annual Dorcas Thanksgiving Breakfast

During the past 24-hours, I have had the pleasure of attending fundraising events for two really amazing organizations.  Yesterday, November 8th, I was a guest of my friend, Virginia Anthony, at the SafeChild Annual Fundraising Luncheon.   The event was held at the Raleigh Downtown Marriott and there was 504 people at the luncheon!

Virginia and Becca at SafeChild

SafeChild is an amazing organization that was started 25 years ago with a mission of preventing child abuse and building stronger families.  Two different families shared their personal testimonials of how SafeChild has positively impacted their lives over the years.  Each table featured a centerpiece of a handmade blanket that will be given to a child who is being treated and cared for by the loving volunteers at SafeChild.

6th Annual Thanksgiving Breakfast for Dorcas Ministires

Today, November 9th, I attended the Dorcas Ministries 6th Annual Thanksgiving Breakfast, held at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary.

Dorcas Thanksgiving Breakfast

I think I have attended this event for at least 5 of the past 6 years and some of those years I have served as a Table Captain.  This year I attended as a guest of Nancy Seymour of Atlantic Tire.  Dorcas is one of my favorite organizations in Cary and the room was packed FULL this morning!  Dorcas serves those in our community who are facing a crisis and the personal testimonials shared this morning were very powerful and heartbreaking all at the same time.

Judy, Nancy and Becca

We are so thankful to have Dorcas here in Cary and for all the help they provide.  It is exciting to know that Dorcas Ministries will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary next year!  They have some cool events planned in 2018 to celebrate, so stay tuned for more!

Women of Western Wake & Lifetime Achievement Award

Today I had the pleasure of attending an event that I go to EVERY SINGLE YEARThe Women of Western Wake, presented by Cary Magazine.

This event is held at the end of October at the gorgeous Umstead Hotel & Spa in Cary.   This year marked the 10th year for the awards luncheon and I was honored to sit at a table with my friends in the Cary Women’s Giving Network.   We decided to all go in together and sponsor a table so we could have the opportunity to tell other ladies about our group!  Over the years, many of the ladies in our Cary Women’s Giving Network have been featured as the award winners for The Women of Western Wake and this year was no different.  But it was a VERY SPECIAL year as our very own, Sheila Ogle, was selected as the FIRST EVER Lifetime Achievement Award Winner in honor of the 10 Year Anniversary!

Cary Women’s Giving Network

Needless to say, Sheila was totally shocked!   This recognition is very much deserved for Sheila and it was a gorgeous huge swirly and heavy award!   We all laughed as the award colors looked perfect with her dress and shoes (see picture below!)

Award and her shoes!

The 2017 Women of Western Wake are as follows: Nicole Dozier, Leigh Duque, Gayle Greene, Fara Palumbo and Miss Vatinet.  Congrats to them all!  Enjoy the photos from today’s luncheon.

Gale Adcock Women Mean Business Breakfast

Women Mean Business

Travis, Gale, Becca and Stephany

This morning I had the pleasure of attending an event for my good friend, NC House Representative, Gale Adcock.  I was a guest of Travis Wright Colopy of Fit & Able Productions who was a presenting sponsor.  The event was called “Women Mean Business Breakfast” was held at SoHo Consignments in Raleigh (a nice change of pace for most of the networking events I attend).   Gale has been representing North Carolina in the State House for several years now and will be running for re-election in 2018.  I see Gale often around town and she is always so very friendly and takes time to stop and make people feel important.  She invited NC State Auditor, Beth Wood to speak at the business breakfast and Beth shared her personal story of going from a small NC farm town to being an elected official.   I hold both of these women in such high regard and appreciate all they do for our communities in North Carolina.  It was nice to see lots of friends and other networking partners at the breakfast.

Blue Cross Blue Shield Executive Women’s Day

Nancy and Becca

This afternoon I had the pleasure of being a guest of Nancy Seymour of Atlantic Tire & Service for the Executive Women’s Day presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina.  The event was held at Prestonwood County Club in Cary, NC and is part of the SAS Championship event schedule.   The topic was “When Women Inspire” and featured Yvonne Camus, COO of the fitness club World Health as the luncheon keynote speaker.  Yvonne was a fantastic speaker and talked about hard work and never giving up.  She shared her personal success story of competing in the Eco-Challenge 2000, the world championship of adventure racing (created by Mark Burnett of Survivor).  Her team was the first rookie team to complete the grueling competition.

Yvonne Camus

Yvonne gave some great tips & quotes, here are two of my favorites: “Whatever you think and talk about most is what you are going to create” and “You either talk yourself into it or you talk yourself out of it”.  Here are some pictures of the event to share.

I really enjoyed the luncheon and check out how cool the dessert was too with the BCBS white chocolate logo

Thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex for dressing me for the event.  They have all the great Fall accessories out in their store!  From boots to scarves and denim jackets!  Be sure to tell them Becca sent you and that you read beccasblog.com for my special readers discount!

Edward Jones Women’s Networking Luncheon

Today I had the pleasure of attending a very nice women’s networking luncheon with my longtime friend, Elizabeth Asbill.   Elizabeth and I met many years ago through the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club.  We became fast friends and our offices are right down the street from each other in Cary.   She reached out to me a few weeks ago about a Women’s Networking Luncheon that was being hosted by her firm, Edward Jones.  Of course I wanted to go!  I invited my good friend, Tia Coppus to come along.

Tia, Becca and Elizabeth

Tia also knows Elizabeth through Rotary.  The event was held at the NC Alumni Center on Centennial Campus (it is beautiful if you have never been!).  The room was full with over 100 ladies from all different backgrounds and walks of life.  The guest speaker was Debra Fine, author from Denver, Colorado.

Women’s Networking Luncheon

She was a very engaging speaker and spoke on the topic of “Small Talk and How to Start a Conversation”.   During the dessert part of the program, she challenged us to step out into the foyer for dessert and to meet at least one new person and find out something we have in common.  She gave a prize to the two ladies who connected the best with the most unique common trait.  I had the opportunity to meet a nice lady named Lorri Sampson of Mid-Atlantic Business Management & Consulting, LLC.  We connected over our love for Nine West shoes (I had on a pair of Nine West heels in cream and she has the same pair at home in blue).  We were able to share our commonality with the group but apparently liking shoes wasn’t the most unique in the room so needless to say we didn’t win.  🙁

Thanks to Elizabeth for a fun time and I enjoyed being there!  Thanks also to Lois Cozart for the dress I purchased from her consignment boutique, My Girlfriend’s Closet.  I always get a lot of compliments when I wear this dress!

Breakfast from PayChex

Yesterday we had a great breakfast delivered to the office from our new contact & referral partner of Paychex Payroll Services.  Thanks to Liz Gross for stopping by the office to say hello and bringing us a very delicious breakfast from the Famous Toastery in Morrisville.  Liz and her husband, Joe, are both employed by PayChex and we love working with them.

Boosterthon FunRun Support

For the past two years, Smith & Smith, CPA has been a proud supporter of the Boosterthon FunRun at two Wake County Schools, West Lake Elementary and Oak Grove Elementary.

West Lake FunRun 2017

The Boosterthon is a fun way for the kids to raise money for their schools.  The kids are encouraged to ask family & friends to support them with a donation/per lap.   On the FunRun Day at their school, they join their other classmates in an active morning of running laps outside (weather permitting) to earn their donations.  It is a super fun activity and a great interactive way for the kids to support their school.  Cam & Brooke’s kids had their Boosterthon FunRun a few weeks ago and we were proud to see Smith & Smith, CPA on the back of the shirts.   They each ran 30+ laps at West Lake Elementary!

Oak Grove FunRun 2017

Track 1 at Oak Grove Elementary had their FunRun today and it was really cool to see Smith & Smith, CPA on the back of their shirts too!  They also let us hang up our company banner.   Track 2,3 & 4 at Oak Grove will have their FunRun on Sept 18th.  Best of luck to all the kiddos and the schools to reach their fundraising goals!

Cary Chamber Business After Hours with KB Homes

I used to have the pleasure of attending the Cary Chamber Business After Hours on a monthly basis.   Then my schedule became a little more complicated and I wasn’t able to attend them very often.  Last week I finally made it out to one!  It was held at the new KB Home site in Cary, near Crossroads Shopping Center.  I had my good friend & orthodontist, Alena Spielberg, meet me at the event.  We had a good time together touring the house and networking with the other guests.

Season Tickets at Koka Booth

Blake and I made the decision earlier this year to purchase season tickets at Koka Booth Amphitheater.  It has been such a fun experience with over 88 shows, concerts, movies and festivals to attend!  It works really well for us too since we live only about 5 minutes away!  The season felt like it was staring to wind-down as our last event was on Aug 12th…almost a month ago!  But it is really just staring to gear up again and there is a full season ahead for the Fall.

Rock of Ages Koka Booth with Christine & Tia

Last night we went to see the theater production of “Rock of Ages”, performed by the Theater Raleigh.  The weather was perfect and we had a great time with friends & family!  We have 5 more events there alone for the month of September!  It is going to be BUSY!

Summer to Fall?

Are you like me and ready to transition your Summer closet over to your Fall wardrobe?  If so, be sure to keep my favorite store in your mind…My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex!

I was there this week stocking up on some great seasonal-transition items for these upcoming Fall cooler days & nights.   Be sure to check out their great selection of trendy jeans, tops and must-have jackets!  Tell them you read about them in Beccasblog.com and get a special discount at check out!  Both tops I have on in the photos above are available for purchase at MGC!  Keep it real and ShopLocal!

Vacation is OVER!  Back to Work!

Ahhhhhhhh…that time of year when vacation is over (so long beach week!) and we are back to work!  We had a great time last week at Myrtle Beach with the Smith family…good weather, no shark bites, only a tad bit of sunburn and lots of relaxation!  But now back to the grind….September and October are not too far away…which means deadlines for extended personal and corporate tax returns.  But another blog soon to come on that.  Let’s focus on some new & exciting things for clients of Smith & Smith, CPA!

Avery County Rotary Club in Banner Elk, NC

July came and went really fast!  It’s typically a quite time around the office, a month we use to get caught up on some work and get some planning done for the rest of the year.  I had an opportunity in mid-July to travel to Banner Elk, NC to drop-off and pick-up our oldest son, Trent, from summer camp at Holston Presbytery Camp.  On my trip back up to the NC mountains (my fave by the way), I was invited to speak to the Avery Country Rotary Club by club member, Larry Hazen.   Larry and I met years ago when we attended Rotary PETS before our year as Club President.  This was such a fun opportunity and I loved meeting all of their club members and sharing my personal Rotary Story with them.  I took along a Rotary Flag from my own Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club and traded flags with their Club President.  So cool!  I love their flag…mountains and a fir tree!  I will present the flag this week to my Club President, Andy Wright.

Today wraps up the end of my year serving Life Experiences as the President for the Board of Directors.  It has been such a fantastic experience and one that I took very seriously.  I have been involved with Life Experiences for many years now and will continue to serve another 3-year term on the Board.   I am so grateful for this special group of people and for all of the friendships I have made along the way.  Thank you to the Board members who served with me this past year and we have another big year ahead of us!   Part of my heart will always be and belong at Life Experiences!

TBJ 40 Under 40 Awards 2017

Today Blake and I had the privilege of attending the TJB 40 Under 40 Awards for the Class of 2017  #40U40Awards

#40U40Awards

Our close friend, Travis Wright Colopy, was one of the honorees this year and his nonprofit company, Fit & Able Productions hosted a table and invited Blake & I to join them to celebrate!   The awards luncheon was held at the Marriott City Center in downtown Raleigh.

Travis & Anna

It was so much fun to be there to celebrate with Travis & his family, including his girlfriend, Anna Garner, plus his mom & dad, grandparents from Ohio and brother, Glen, who came from Germany!  Each recipient was called to the stage to receive their award and had approximately 1-minute for a thank you speech.

Congrats to the winners!

They shared their “Personal Hashtag# with the crowd and told why it was meaningful to them.   They also had selected a song that would be played when their name was called as they walked to the stage.   I enjoyed hearing all of the fun songs and learning more about each winner through the explanations of their personal hashtags.

Travis in the TBJ

Travis said his personal hashtag was #wedontsayno and his song was Kryptonite by the band 3-Doors Down.  The publication of the Triangle Business Journal that came out today has all 40 recipients listed and goes into greater detail about the reasons they were selected.

Smith & Smith, CPA client in the TBJ

It was nice to see one of our clients from Smith & Smith, CPA listed as a winner, Matthew Leerberg of Smith Moore Leatherwood.

Travis, Anna, Becca & Blake

Thanks to Lois Cozart and her awesome team at My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex for helping me shop for this stunning Cynthia Rowley pink & purple dress!  Lia Sa of Fleur de Lia Alterations had to adjust the hemline for me and she did a fantastic job!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com when you shop there for a special discount for my shoppers!

Rotary International Convention with 40,000 Friends

I honestly didn’t even know I had 40,000 friends, but after coming back from the 2017 Rotary International Convention in Atlanta (got home today), I really kinda feel like I do!  That’s crazy right?  Everyone at the convention was really friendly and even though I didn’t know all 40,000 of their names & where they live & the language they speak, we all shared a common smile and a passion for doing good in the world.  That’s the best part of Rotary after all!

Becca & Blake for Smith & Smith, CPA at Rotary International Convention 2017

It was really nice to have Blake along for the whole event and we had a total of 17 club members & families there from our own Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club.

Club members of Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club

The mornings were spent in opening sessions with engaging speakers on the topics of Eradicating Polio, Stopping Human Trafficking, and the role Rotary plays around the world in so many lives.  We heard from Bill Gates, Ashton Kutcher and John Cena, plus Jack Nicklaus,  the Mayor of Atlanta and many more!

Lots of Rotary people!

Some of my favorite parts included the Google EndPolioNow Virtual Reality three-minute film called ONE SMALL ACT #ENDPOLIO, that was offered to the largest crowd ever at one gathering spot!  Pretty cool!

One Small Act with Google

Virtual Reality with Google and Rotary

I also really liked the Hall of Friendship, a HUGE vendor/booth area that featured Rotary Clubs, Rotary Projects, Merchandisers and Vendors all with resources for Rotary!  Being that this was my FIRST Rotary International Convention, I had heard great things about the Hall of Friendship, but seeing it & experiencing it for myself was just really a great opportunity.  I also loved the presentation of the Country Flags during the Opening Ceremony on Sunday…over 125 countries and some that I am ashamed to say I had never even heard of, let alone know where they are located!

Country Flags

Tour at SweetWater Brewery

During the afternoon breaks and evenings, we had dinner with friends at some really delicious restaurants, as Atlanta does have quite the restaurant scene!  We also took time to tour SweetWater Brewery and went to a comedy show at the Laughing Skull.

The Famous Rotary Pin Man

Thanks to Lois Cozart and her team at My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex for helping me pack a comfy & flexible wardrobe for the trip!  Comfort really was the key for this trip as most of the event were casual and relaxed in nature.

So it’s back to work as usual, but I have lot of wonderful memories (and photos) to help me remember how much fun we had representing Smith & Smith, CPA at the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta 2017.  We have already made plans to attend the 2018 Rotary International Convention in TORONTO, Canada!  Can you find me hiding in the Toronto photo?

Can you find Becca hiding in the photo?!?!
