The Gifting Tree in downtown Cary for Christmas

Once again downtown Cary is decorated with beautiful trees all up and down Academy Street!  The Annual Gifting Tree Project has started and voting is open through December 17th.   For the past few years our Smith & Smith, CPA firm has participated in this festive event.  I am sad to say that I missed the deadline this year!  But I am still voting for my favorite tree and highlighting a few in my blog today.  I had the pleasure of attending the Annual Town of Cary Tree Lighting on Saturday and took time to walk up and down Academy Street and look at every single tree.  They are so beautiful!  Of course I love the Rotary Clubs of Cary Tree (sponsored by all 5 Rotary Clubs in Cary) and the Graceful Expressions Tree (they are one of our clients).   A new tree this year that I REALLY like is the Nikki’s Tree of Remembrance.  I don’t know the story behind this tree, but I like it because it has foam snowflakes and sharpies all over the tree.  People are encouraged to stop by and write the name of a loved one who passed this year on one of the snowflakes.  I love that this tree is so interactive and special.  I wrote down two names of special people who passed away in 2017.

The boys and I enjoyed the Town of Cary Tree Lighting.  There was a fun Variety Show beforehand that featured lots of musical talents of students from local Cary schools.   We loved the Cary High School A Capella Ensemble, Green Eggs and Jam.  They did a really funny Christmas music rendition.  Some of the Town of Cary Elected Officials were there and helped to light the Tree with the Home Town Spirit Award Winner, Ralph Ashworth.

Cary Chamber of Commerce Networking Breakfast

This morning was the Cary Chamber Eye Opener Networking Breakfast for the month of October.

Eye Opener Breakfast Cary Chamber October 2017

This networking breakfast is held once a month on the 4th Wednesday at 7:30am at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary.  The event usually draws a crowd of 50-60 chamber members and guests from the business community.  The guest speaker this morning was Tom Gough, Senior Vice President & Administrator at WakeMed Cary Hospital.  He talked about the fast pace of growth in the Cary community and how that is impacting hospitals and local health care.  He shared some of the new and exciting innovate technologies being used at WakeMed Cary to help patients with everything from cancer treatment to maternity care and all services in between.  WakeMed  Cary plays a huge role in our community through their support and sponsorships of such things like WakeMed Soccer Park and the Movies by Moonlight at Koka Booth.

Halloween Party at White Tiger Taekwondo

During the breakfast I saw my friend and client of Smith & Smith, CPA, Master Rondy and her husband, Fred Huerta.

Master Rondy and Becca Smith

World Polio Day October 24th 2017

Yesterday, October 24th, was World Polio Day.  The polio disease is close to being eradicated and World Polio Day was established by Rotary International to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against polio.  In honor of World Polio Day 2017, my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club held 2 different fundraisers to raise funds to donate to the organization EndPolioNow.

World Polio Day Oct 24th 2017

We had a lunch & dinner fundraiser at Danny’s Bar-B-Que in Cary and partnered with My Berry Frozen Yogurt for $1/per bowl yesterday being donated.  Thanks to all who came out and supported us!  It looks like we have raised around $250!

Thank you to My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex for dressing me in the red & white swirl fringe piko top.  Shop there and tell them you read beccasblog.com for a special discount for my shoppers!

Edward Jones Women’s Networking Luncheon

Today I had the pleasure of attending a very nice women’s networking luncheon with my longtime friend, Elizabeth Asbill.   Elizabeth and I met many years ago through the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club.  We became fast friends and our offices are right down the street from each other in Cary.   She reached out to me a few weeks ago about a Women’s Networking Luncheon that was being hosted by her firm, Edward Jones.  Of course I wanted to go!  I invited my good friend, Tia Coppus to come along.

Tia, Becca and Elizabeth

Tia also knows Elizabeth through Rotary.  The event was held at the NC Alumni Center on Centennial Campus (it is beautiful if you have never been!).  The room was full with over 100 ladies from all different backgrounds and walks of life.  The guest speaker was Debra Fine, author from Denver, Colorado.

Women’s Networking Luncheon

She was a very engaging speaker and spoke on the topic of “Small Talk and How to Start a Conversation”.   During the dessert part of the program, she challenged us to step out into the foyer for dessert and to meet at least one new person and find out something we have in common.  She gave a prize to the two ladies who connected the best with the most unique common trait.  I had the opportunity to meet a nice lady named Lorri Sampson of Mid-Atlantic Business Management & Consulting, LLC.  We connected over our love for Nine West shoes (I had on a pair of Nine West heels in cream and she has the same pair at home in blue).  We were able to share our commonality with the group but apparently liking shoes wasn’t the most unique in the room so needless to say we didn’t win.  🙁

Goodie bag with Kate Spade roller perfume!

Thanks to Elizabeth for a fun time and I enjoyed being there!  Thanks also to Lois Cozart for the dress I purchased from her consignment boutique, My Girlfriend’s Closet.  I always get a lot of compliments when I wear this dress!

Breakfast from PayChex

Yesterday we had a great breakfast delivered to the office from our new contact & referral partner of Paychex Payroll Services.  Thanks to Liz Gross for stopping by the office to say hello and bringing us a very delicious breakfast from the Famous Toastery in Morrisville.  Liz and her husband, Joe, are both employed by PayChex and we love working with them.

Vacation is OVER!  Back to Work!

Ahhhhhhhh…that time of year when vacation is over (so long beach week!) and we are back to work!  We had a great time last week at Myrtle Beach with the Smith family…good weather, no shark bites, only a tad bit of sunburn and lots of relaxation!  But now back to the grind….September and October are not too far away…which means deadlines for extended personal and corporate tax returns.  But another blog soon to come on that.  Let’s focus on some new & exciting things for clients of Smith & Smith, CPA!

Avery County Rotary Club in Banner Elk, NC

July came and went really fast!  It’s typically a quite time around the office, a month we use to get caught up on some work and get some planning done for the rest of the year.  I had an opportunity in mid-July to travel to Banner Elk, NC to drop-off and pick-up our oldest son, Trent, from summer camp at Holston Presbytery Camp.  On my trip back up to the NC mountains (my fave by the way), I was invited to speak to the Avery Country Rotary Club by club member, Larry Hazen.   Larry and I met years ago when we attended Rotary PETS before our year as Club President.  This was such a fun opportunity and I loved meeting all of their club members and sharing my personal Rotary Story with them.  I took along a Rotary Flag from my own Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club and traded flags with their Club President.  So cool!  I love their flag…mountains and a fir tree!  I will present the flag this week to my Club President, Andy Wright.

Rotary International Convention with 40,000 Friends

I honestly didn’t even know I had 40,000 friends, but after coming back from the 2017 Rotary International Convention in Atlanta (got home today), I really kinda feel like I do!  That’s crazy right?  Everyone at the convention was really friendly and even though I didn’t know all 40,000 of their names & where they live & the language they speak, we all shared a common smile and a passion for doing good in the world.  That’s the best part of Rotary after all!

Becca & Blake for Smith & Smith, CPA at Rotary International Convention 2017

It was really nice to have Blake along for the whole event and we had a total of 17 club members & families there from our own Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club.

Club members of Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club

The mornings were spent in opening sessions with engaging speakers on the topics of Eradicating Polio, Stopping Human Trafficking, and the role Rotary plays around the world in so many lives.  We heard from Bill Gates, Ashton Kutcher and John Cena, plus Jack Nicklaus,  the Mayor of Atlanta and many more!

Lots of Rotary people!

Some of my favorite parts included the Google EndPolioNow Virtual Reality three-minute film called ONE SMALL ACT #ENDPOLIO, that was offered to the largest crowd ever at one gathering spot!  Pretty cool!

One Small Act with Google

Virtual Reality with Google and Rotary

I also really liked the Hall of Friendship, a HUGE vendor/booth area that featured Rotary Clubs, Rotary Projects, Merchandisers and Vendors all with resources for Rotary!  Being that this was my FIRST Rotary International Convention, I had heard great things about the Hall of Friendship, but seeing it & experiencing it for myself was just really a great opportunity.  I also loved the presentation of the Country Flags during the Opening Ceremony on Sunday…over 125 countries and some that I am ashamed to say I had never even heard of, let alone know where they are located!

Country Flags

Tour at SweetWater Brewery

During the afternoon breaks and evenings, we had dinner with friends at some really delicious restaurants, as Atlanta does have quite the restaurant scene!  We also took time to tour SweetWater Brewery and went to a comedy show at the Laughing Skull.

The Famous Rotary Pin Man

Thanks to Lois Cozart and her team at My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex for helping me pack a comfy & flexible wardrobe for the trip!  Comfort really was the key for this trip as most of the event were casual and relaxed in nature.

So it’s back to work as usual, but I have lot of wonderful memories (and photos) to help me remember how much fun we had representing Smith & Smith, CPA at the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta 2017.  We have already made plans to attend the 2018 Rotary International Convention in TORONTO, Canada!  Can you find me hiding in the Toronto photo?

Can you find Becca hiding in the photo?!?!

Last Saturday, June 3rd 2017, was my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club’s 31st Annual Pig Pickin’ in the Park!  It was a HUGE success, with perfect weather, over 800 people fed delicious BBQ, a record number of sponsorships and the MOST we have ever made on our major fundraising event!  Our final numbers are still pending, but it looks like we are pushing close to $50,000!!!!  This fundraiser supports our college student scholarships as well as our local & global humanitarian projects.  Many thanks to ALL of our great sponsors, especially the ones who sponsored on my behalf: Sharon Lewis Homes, Gilliam & Associates Realty, Second Empire Restaurant, Chick-fil-A Waverly Place, Nirvelli Day Spa, Fit & Able, David Hellinger LPL Financial, Dennis Sargent Law, Randy Walker of Walker Design Build, Elizabeth Asbill of Edward Jones, Jerry Kozel of JTK Mediation, 5Star Awards, Riccobene Family Dentistry, Swift Creek Animal Hospital, Owen Robinson of Keller Williams Realty, Smith Family Dental Solutions, Rally Point Bar & Grill and the Matthews House in Cary.

AENC Affiliate Roundtable

Last week I officially joined the AENC, Association Executives of North Carolina.  I have been to several of their events in the past with Rotary and with my good friend, Christine Johnson, who is a member of AENC through her job with FirstPoint Resources.  It is a group I have been interested in for a while and I’m so excited to finally be a member!  I used the remaining funds from my WBON of Cary Scholarship to join!  This morning I attended the Affiliate Roundtable discussion with the topic: “How Do I Get in the Door?”  It was very informative, I took 4 pages of notes from the speakers: Aubie Knight, Linda Stinson and Jim Booth.  I can’t wait for the next event!

Blake & I are off to Atlanta for the 2017 Rotary International Convention!!  It’s our first time going, so we don’t really know what all to expect, but we know it is going to be FUN and AMAZING!  I will be sharing on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube

Last Saturday, March 24th, was the Cary Central Rotary Club “Taste of Cary” and Casino Night.  Blake and I attended this event along with some other members of my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club and really had a good time.  We tasted lots of good food from local Cary restaurants, bid on some cool auction items, visited with friends and played the casino tables.  This was a fundraiser for the Cary Central Rotary Club Foundation.  I hope they did well and raised lots of money!  Thanks to Lois Cozart and her team at My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in the 3/4-sleeve silk wrap dress from the downtown Apex store.  They have their spring merchandise out so it is time to STOCK UP ladies!   Tell them Becca sent you to shop and get my special shopper discount on your purchase!

Veterans Day 2016 and More

veteransFirst of all, Happy Veterans Day and a big THANK YOU to those who have served and defended our country.  Today (and everyday) is a day to honor YOU and your service!

The kids are out of school, so they are here at the office with us today.  One of the many perks of a “family run business“!  Here is a picture of the cousins with Grandpa outside the office.  Thankfully we have a nice grassy field next to our office and they can run and play games together.

Blake & Becca at Cary Magazine Movers & Shakers Class of 2016

Last night, Cary Magazine hosted their 2nd Annual Movers & Shakers party for the Class of 2016.  I am so honored to have been included among the winners this year!  The winners were nominated by peers and selected based on their community service, business involvement and leadership roles.   The June/July 2016 Issue of Cary Magazine featured an article about the Movers & Shakers this year and listed out their achievements and success.  I really enjoyed reading the article and am proud to say I know many of these people as close friends, fellow Rotarians, and business partners.   The party last night was held at the new Bond Brothers Brewery in downtown Cary and featured appetizers by Catering by Design and really delicious pie from Slice.  Thanks to 5Star Awards for the beautiful glass engraved awards.

Family Night with Chick-Fil-A and the Rotary Banquets

It seems like just yesterday we were closing out May and looking into June!  And now here we are today at JULY 1st!!!!  It’s been a busy end of June and I am sure July will be the same.

Hosting Family Night at Chick-Fil-A

Earlier this week Smith & Smith, CPA had the pleasure of hosting Family Night with Chick-Fil-A at Waverly Place in Cary.  We enjoy doing this twice a year and always meet really nice families and kids.  This time we did a Summer Sponge Ball and decorate Colorful Piggy Banks.  We had a ton of families come to our table and ran out of the piggy banks within the first 30-minutes!  Thanks to all of our friends and clients who came by to see us that night.  We will host another night in the Fall 2016.

Rotary Banquets 2016-2017

This time of year also means that the 2015-2016 Rotary Year is coming to a close and the new Rotary Boards for Rotary International, Districts and Clubs will start over with new slate of officers.  Blake and I had the pleasure of attending the Rotary District 7710 Governors Banquet last week at North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh.   We also attended my own Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club Installation Banquet this week at NC State University Club.  Both events were well attended and really nice.  It’s so fun to celebrate all that has been accomplished in a Rotary year!  I am excited to see Susan Pruskin come in as our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club new President!  She was a new member for me to Rotary several years ago and she is going to have a fantastic year!!!  Congrats Susan!   Thank you to My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary and downtown Apex for helping me with dresses for both events.  I wore a shiny silver dress to the North Hills banquet and last night a dark blue tulle and lace dress with the sleeve cut out to the NC State University Club.  MGC has a HUGE summer sale going on right now!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get a special discount!

End of School Year

On a personal note, our boys have finished the school year and are now moving into 1st Grade and 4th Grade.  So crazy!  We were able to attend their school programs this week and are so proud of their accomplishments!  Trent received the MATH Award for his class again this year!  So proud!  Mark received his promotion certificate to 1st grade.  Both boys had excellent report cards!  We are so proud!  In the picture with Mark I am working a Yellow Silk top from J.Crew that I found at My Girlfriend’s Closet and in the picture with Trent I am wearing a lightweight summer sweater from Ann Taylor Loft, also from My Girlfriend’s Closet.
