Power Breakfast Networking and 5-Years Marketing Partnership Celebration

Triangle Business Journal

TBJ Power Breakfast #tribizpower

I started out very early this morning (as in I left my house before 7am) to attend the Triangle Business Journal Power Breakfast.   The breakfast networking event was held downtown Raleigh at the City Club and featured a 4-person panel on Community Banks and their role in our ever changing community.  Panel speakers were: Larry Barbour of North State Bank, Scott Custer of Live Oak Bancshares, Ray Grace who is the NC Commissioner of Bankers and Bob Hatley of Paragon Bank.

Gift from Delta Dental & Program of Guest Speakers

The panel was lead by Jason Christie, Market President & Publisher of the Triangle Business Journal.  The program focused on how community banks are amid an unprecedented consolidation trend in the US and one that has not been witnessed in more then two decades.  The panelist talked about the newly formed banks and how that is impacting loan activity, branch size & locations, and the key factors behind the consolidations.  All of our business clients at Smith & Smith, CPA have banking needs and I knew many of the bankers in the room as a result of networking friendships formed from the Cary Chamber of Commerce.  I found the program to be very informative and beneficial to understand more about the banking industry in North Carolina.

Maggie, Becca and Stephany

The program was sponsored this morning by Delta Dental of North CarolinaElaine Loyack, Director of Community and Public Relations for Delta Dental gave the opening remarks and shared a video about their Smiles for Kids program.  Elaine is a friend and client of ours at Smith & Smith, CPA.  Delta Dental provided a nice gift bag for all attendees that included a new toothbrush and multi-outlet car charger.

Elaine of Delta Dental

I attended the breakfast with my friend Stephany Connelly of AppleOne Employment Services.  I also had the pleasure of meeting Maggie Stroud, Alumni Relations and Program Coordinator for Leadership North Carolina, a program in which I have been interested in for many years!  Thank you to Brian Reid of Paragon Bank for taking a picture this morning of me with Stephany and Maggie.

5-Year Marketing Celebration

5 Year Anniversary for MGC and Beccasblog

So August 10th is the 5-year anniversary mark in which I have had a special partnership with Lois Cozart and her retail resale boutique in downtown Apex, My Girlfriend’s Closet.  Yes, friends, that is right…5 years ago Lois sent me that WONDERFULLY unexpected email asking me to partner with her on the most BRILLIANT marketing/promotion plan in the world!!!!  Ever since that day, I have been graced with the opportunity to be dressed by the stylist at My Girlfriend’s Closet for all of my networking & social events.  It has been such a crazy and fun 5 years!  I have worn all kinds of different styles, designers, colors, crazy shoes, beautiful jewelry, unique handbags and more!  It has been so much fun and we have both seen our businesses grow and thrive as a result of this partnership.  Thank you Lois for such a unique opportunity and I look forward to 5 more years!

Lunch at The Provincial

We celebrated together on Monday with lunch at The Provincial in downtown Apex.  This delicious restaurant happens to be a client of Smith & Smith, CPA and the food is crazy delicious!  Next time you are in downtown Apex, stop in to see Lois at MGC (and shop a little too) and then head down to The Provincial for a great meal.  Tell them Becca sent you!  And of course the pink lace dress I am wearing today is from My Girlfriend’s Closet!

Updating our Photo on Facebook

Yes, yes, it was TIME!  It was actually WELL PAST time for us to update our Facebook page photo for our profile and title cover picture.  As I have stated before, it is kinda like herding cats around here to get our office people together for a photo.  BUT…I managed to do it successfully today!  Mainly because we have been nominated for the Cary Chamber Excellence Awards and they had requested a photo of our office for the luncheon next week (fingers crossed and stay tuned for results!).   So that is the REAL reason why I was able to get our office to agree to a quick photo today.  I think we are looking pretty good!  And check out our new Facebook profile cover too!

I just love a friendship that is rewarding and special…one of those friendships where you are really close in the beginning and then life gets busy and you stay friends but don’t talk or see each other as often…but when you DO see each other, you just pick right back up where you left off and catch up on life together.  My friendship with Paige Williams has been like that in the 12+ years I have been in Cary!  I met Paige when her family was FIRST opening Great Harvest Bread Co. of Cary nearly 10 years ago!  We were in the Women Business Owners Network of Cary and the Cary Chamber together and I loved watching her bakery grow and grow!  So now GHB Co of Cary has some even more EXCITING NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!  Starting on Monday, Feb 27th, they sill start serving sandwiches, soups and salads!!!!!!!! SO YUMMY!!!!

Let’s Eat Lunch!!!!

Their new location will be 1240 NW Maynard Road (right down from their current location, which will become a gluten free bakery).   Today we had a nice sneak-peek of the salads and sandwiches when Amy (long-time GHB employee) stopped by our Smith & Smith, CPA office with a whole catered lunch!  Talk about being SPOILED by a friendship!!!!!!  Paige had called me with the news just yesterday and said they wanted to treat us to lunch!  WHO SAYS NO TO THAT!?!?!?!!   We have been so excited all morning and just completely enjoyed every single bite!  The menu looks fantastic and I know they are going to have much success!   Thanks for lunch GHB!  Go see them on Monday, Feb 27th!

Rotary Chili Lunch, Office Pup Harvey & MORE

Let’s Eat

Well Hello FRIDAY!  And not just Friday but the LAST Friday in January!  And it is a pretty cold Friday, even with temperatures in the 70s earlier this week we are barely topping out at 50 degrees today.  So a totally perfect day for The Cary Rotary Club Chili Lunch & DinnerSmith & Smith, CPA has been a sponsor of this event for several years now.  The food is really good, the friendships are great and the cause is even better!  I want over to pick up our lunches today and brought them back to the office.  The food was YUM-YUM-YUMMY!!!!  Nothing hits the spot like some hot chili on a cold day!  Cheers to The Cary Rotary Club for a successful and worthy fundraiser!  The funds they raised today will go towards projects in our community and around the world.  Rotary really does amazing work!

Cary Chamber Eye Opener Breakfast

Cary Chamber Eye Opener

On Wednesday morning I went to the Cary Chamber Eye Opener Breakfast at Prestonwood Country Club.  It was the Annual State of the Town Address by our Cary Town Mayor.  I enjoy this breakfast each year as it is always nice to hear what has been done in Cary in the past year and the plans for future events.  It was a record crowd this year with over 200 in attendance!  I had the pleasure of sitting with several friends of mine in the Cary Women’s Giving Network.

Cookies Everywhere!

Speaking of the Cary Chamber, their Annual Auction & Reverse Car Raffle is coming up at the end of February.  Our Smith & Smith, CPA office usually donates a few gift baskets, so I am sticking with our theme over the past few years and doing 2 baskets of girl scout cookies!  The boxes are taking over our office so I need to get them in the baskets and wrapped quickly so we don’t eat them!  We did some remodeling in our office a few weeks ago and now have some nice storage shelves in the back office…I am trying so hard to keep all of the cookies back there and out of any sight of hungry eyes!  Stay tuned to see how they look all wrapped up for the auction!  And check out my cute dress in the photo from My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex!

New Office Pup!

Harvey Smith

And now for a very special introduction…I want you to meet Harvey, our new puppy!  She is hanging out at the office with us today and being a very good girl (mainly just sleeping).  She is brand new, about 10 weeks old, and we got her last night from Paws in the City.  Our family had a dog, Griffin, for many years (10 1/2 to be exact) before she passed away from lymphoma.  So we are THRILLED to have Harvey in our life now!  She is named after Steve Harvey, the game show host on Family Feud.  Check out Paws in City when you have time and ask for Pam, she is the one who helped us get Harvey  🙂

Have a fantastic last weekend of January 2017!!!!

Susan, Michele, Becca & Kim at the Cary Chamber Business of Women Luncheon Series

Today was the November meeting of the Cary Chamber of Commerce Business of Women.  If you have been reading my blog for a few years now, you KNOW this is a monthly luncheon that I almost always try to attend.  The speaker today was the 2016 Mrs. North Carolina….right, as in MRS not MISS or MS or TEEN North Carolina.  The MARRIED one.  Who knew?  Not me!  Her name is Michele Duncan and she gave a really interesting talk.  She is a pastor’s wife and been married to him for 24 years, moved 18 times and lived in 8 states!  She has been Mrs. District of Columbia USA and Mrs. Virginia USA and is now the Mrs. North Carolina.  Busy lady!  She is very passionate about her nonprofit, Choose 2 Change.   The December Business of Women will be held on Thursday December 15th and will feature a speaker from The American Red Cross.  Thanks to Lois Cozart and her awesome team of ladies at My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in the Kensie Black & White layered dress.  Shop there and tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get a special discount!

Cary Chamber Eye Opener Breakfast Candidate Forum

ccc-eob-sept-2

Table ready for “Speed Dating” with the NC Candidates

The Cary Chamber of Commerce used their September Eye Opener Breakfast as an opportunity to host a candidate forum for those running for office in the NC House and NC Senate.  Candidates were there to represent Districts 16 & 17 (NC Senate) and Districts 11, 36 & 41 (NC House).  The breakfast was held at Prestonwood Country Club and took place from 7:30AM-9:00AM with over 100 people in attendance.  The candidates were asked to introduce themselves from the podium and give a brief 2-mintue overview of their campaign.  Once that was complete, they went from table to table in a “speed dating” style.  I really liked this format as it gave the attendees a much better opportunity to be involved and included in the conversations.  We were encouraged to ask them questions at our tables and hear their direct feedback.  I have been to the Candidate Forum before where each one is asked the same question and given the same amount of time to reply.  I REALLY liked the “speed dating style” much better and I hope the Cary Chamber will continue with this style at the other upcoming candidate forums.  The Cary Chamber will be hosting several other forums in the month of October, check out the dates & times on their website and make plans to attend!

I was happy to see and support Duane Hall, long-time friend and client of Smith & Smith, CPA at the forum.  Duane is an attorney in Raleigh and represents NC House District 11.

Bucket Bash with Fill Your Bucket List Foundation, Plus Cary Crime Stoppers, and Much More!

Now that the rush of ‘tax season’ is over, I am trying to get back in my better pace about blogging!  I have lots of events to catch back up on from the past week, just seems like each year tax season ends and the craziness of life & schedules take over!

Fill Your Bucket List Foundation Bucket Bash Gala

Bucket Bash Gala with Betty and Tia of Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club

Bucket Bash Gala with Betty and Tia of Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club

Over the weekend Blake & I had the pleasure of attending the 2nd Annual Bucket Bash for Fill Your Bucket List Foundation.  This is an amazing organization that grants wishes for adults with cancer…think “Make A Wish” but for adults!  So incredible!  The organization is very young, but has already made a remarkable impact on the community and helping adults make their wishes come true!  The Founder, Peggy Gibson Carroll, is VERY passionate about their mission and I’ve had the pleasure of getting to meet her several times over the past year.  Their goal on Saturday night at the Fill Your Bucket List Foundation Bucket Bash Gala was to raise $100,000 and they DID IT!

Bucket Bash at Chef's Academy

Bucket Bash at Chef’s Academy

The event was held at the Chef’s Academy Campus and featured competing chefs with their own signature menu items to taste, a full buffet, silent auction and much more!  Several friends from my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club were there, along with some of our clients from Smith & Smith, CPA.  I LOVED seeing that one of our clients, Seton McGlennon of Seton’s Studio had donated an item for the silent auction.  Seton does beautiful work through her artistic creations and has done work for US Presidents, Oprah and other celebrities!  Check out her work!  Congrats to Peggy and her Board of Directors for a fun and successful event to help so many who are struggling and suffering from cancer in our community.

Create your memories in art with Seton!

Jaqui and Becca at Cary Chamber Eye Opener Breakfast

For the past 11 years, I have had the opportunity to participate in the Cary Chamber of Commerce Annual Membership Drive.   I get to help recruit new members to the Cary Chamber and see them get involved and flourish with their business!  It is very rewarding, as our CPA firm has been a Cary Chamber member for over 11 years and the benefits are incredible!  One of my new members for the 2016 year is The Cary Crime Stoppers.  Their current Chairman of the Board is Jaqui Carlislecary crime stoppers logo Jaqui joined me this morning at the Cary Chamber April Eye Opener Breakfast.  We heard from speakers in the Wake County School System about STEM-Impact and the work they are doing to get teachers and the business community connected and engaged together.  It was a very interesting topic and I’m so glad that Jaqui could join me!  Check out the Cary Crime Stoppers and see how they are working to keep citizens safe in and around Cary.

The Corner Tavern & Grill

corner tavern year 2Congrats to The Corner Tavern & Grill for their 2nd Anniversary Celebration!  They had a big 2-day party over the weekend and featured all kinds of local bands, games, prizes, events for the kids and of course, their amazing food!  Blake and I were not able to attend due to schedule conflicts with the boys & family, but Alicia and her family were there to take part in the festivities and celebrate!  The Corner Tavern & Grill has been a client of Smith & Smith, CPA since nearly the beginning and we are thrilled with their continued success in Cary!  Congrats to all of them and looks like the celebration was FUN for sure!  We look forward to celebrating 3 years next year and more after that!

Tax Client new baby, her name is Kate

Tax Client new baby

One of the most favorite things for me each year during tax season is to hear about and MEET the new babies of our tax clients!  Last week one of them came in to see me!  I’m holding baby Kate in this photo, who is just 3 1/2 weeks old!  She’s super sweet and was very cuddly.  🙂  I am so glad she came by to see me!  I remember holding her big brother a few years ago after he was born.  My good friend, Liz Cantino, had her second baby YESTERDAY and I’ve already been over there to see her and get in some snuggles!

kk playAnd last but not least, this past weekend was Blake’s OFFICIAL first weekend after Tax SeasonYEA!!!!  We were able to get in some good family time with the boys and even took them to see the play, Annie Get Your Gun.  The play was put on by Apex Middle School and featured our very own cousin, Michaela Fillingame, as one of the dancers!  She did a fantastic job and the boys enjoyed getting to see her after the show!  Congrats Michaela!

Leadership Cary in Education with the Cary Chamber of Commerce

Friends at Leadership Cary with Lisa Wilson

Friends at Leadership Cary with Lisa Wilson

Earlier this week I attended the Cary Chamber Leadership Cary Class of 2015-2016 seminar on Education.  I am happy to serve at the Co-Chair for this year’s class.  We started the day off at the Cary Chamber of Commerce in downtown Cary where we heard from Wake County Public Schools Superintended, Dr. Jim Merrill.  Dr. Merrill gave an overview of the current WCPSS stats, number of schools, students, amount spent per student, teacher salaries and graduation rates.

WCPSS Board Member, Bill Fletcher

WCPSS Board Member, Bill Fletcher

He also discussed the goal for 2020 to have a 95% Gradation Rate…which also includes students having the skills to be able to walk at graduation but also move on to the next level…being prepared for the real world!  After Dr. Merrill we heard from Bill Fletcher, Board Member for Wake County Public School System.  Bill spoke on building new schools, student population growth, student achievement and the upcoming election in November.  Bill has been a friend for many years, he is active in Rotary and really tires to connect the community with the school board.

WCPSS Superintendent, Dr. Merrill

WCPSS Superintendent, Dr. Merrill

I enjoyed hearing both of them speak.   After Bill, we heard from Lisa Wilson, Director for Corporate Relations Wake Technical Community College.  Lisa is a fellow East Carolina University alumni (GO PIRATES) and she spoke on the new things at Wake Tech, their growth and NINE campus locations all in Wake County.   After the morning session, I came back to work (it’s Tax Season after all!) and the group went over to tour Hunt Library at NC State and learned more about Vernon Malone College and Career Academy.   Thanks to Christie Moser for her guidance and support to the Cary Leadership class!  Christie works at the Cary Chamber and makes all of the Leadership Cary plans and arrangements.

Sweet Things at Smith & Smith, CPA

Becca & Alexa

Becca & Alexa

I had a sweet visitor at work yesterday too!  My good friend, Tia Coppus, brought their dog, Alexa, by to see me.  We have helped to doggie-sit Alexa over the past few months and I always get exited to see her!  We have not gotten another dog yet, our 10 1/2 year old dog, Griffin, passed away in December.  The boys are hoping to get another dog soon, we keep telling them we have to get through tax season first!  Thanks to My Girlfriends Closet for the super cute pink and black polka-dot dress!  I paired it with a black cardigan and stayed comfy all day!  And I think Alexa liked stopping by to see me too 🙂  Thanks Tia!!!  She made my day!

Donuts!

Donuts!

Another sweet treat!?!  We had a guy stop by the office who was selling Krispy Kreme donuts for a fundraiser and yes, we didn’t say NO!  The guys bought several boxes an had them for breakfast, lunch and a later afternoon snack!   For some reason…those donuts in the Fundraiser boxes always seem to have LOTS of extra frosting on them!  We are in count-down-mode at work…Friday March 18th is ONE MONTH until TAX DAY…April 18th 2016!  Don’t Blake, Bob and Cam look cute!?!?!

Ready to File! Here are Tax Tips for 2015 Taxes

Tax Tips with Smith & Smith, CPA

Tax Tips with Smith & Smith, CPA

Everyone loves to ask us for those ‘secret‘ and ‘all importanttax tips for filing your 2015 Tax Returns.  Here at Smith & Smith, CPA, we are proud to publish an article again this year with CaryCitizen on 2015 Tax Filling: What You Need to Know.  I met Lindsey and Hal, owners of CaryCitizen, several years ago and I see them often at Cary Chamber of Commerce events and networking meetings.   They do a really great job of capturing all the things in, around and about Cary.   I use CaryCitizen as a major resource and enjoy working with them each year on a tax filing article.  So take a read and let me know what you think!  Was it helpful?  Any ideas on some tax tips that I could include for next year?

Tax Class for 2016 and Let’s Party for Christmas!

Tax Class Seminar

Tax Class Seminar

You would probably not think that Tax Classes and Christmas Parties go hand-in-hand, but around here they kind of do.   You see, each year, the CPA’s and accountants in our office have to go through tax classes and earn CPE Credits to keep their license to practice tax.  The guys at Smith & Smith, CPA take a 2-day course in Greensboro that is put on by the Don Farmer Tax Seminar.  Now I know that sounds REALLY exciting and you are jealous that you can’t go!  So all joking aside, it is a really good course, they learn all about the new tax laws and changes and come back with their heads spinning on the new info!  Alicia is also taking her tax classes this week, but she stays close to home and completes her courses in Raleigh.  The guys are out of town in Greensboro for their big seminar.

Life Experiences Christmas Party

Life Experiences with Rotary Friends

Life Experiences with Rotary Friends

Earlier this week we had the Life Experiences Christmas Party.  It really is the BEST party of the year!  I’m proud to serve on the Board at Life Experiences and their Christmas party is a time when all of the clients, staff, Board, and families can come together to share a pot luck meal, meet each other, sing songs, and best of all, open gifts!  They each trade names and bring a special present for each other.  The clients also get a brand new Life Experiences t-shirt, something that they LOVE and truly Cherish.

Full House for the Party

Full House for the Party

Each year, one of the clients gets to dress up as Santa Clause and give out all of the gifts.  Mary Madenspacher, Executive Director for Life Experiences, also takes the microphone around to each one and let’s them say their name, introduce their families and say really whatever they want.  It’s a hoot as you never really know what is going to be said!  We had a great time at the party and I’m so proud to have many of my fellow Rotarians from the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club there with me!  Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet for the beautiful black and white polka-dot dress.

Union Bank Christmas Party

Friends of Union Bank

Friends of Union Bank

Union Bank also had their Christmas Party this week.  My good friends, Jessica Register and Julie Clark, work for Union Bank and were kind to invite me to their office party.  Union Bank hosted their 2015 Wake County Christmas Open House at their Cary location, 111 Commonwealth Court, and had a huge crowd of clients, friends, Chamber members, Rotarians, and community leaders in attendance.  Jessica and I have been friends for several years now and have been on the Cary Chamber Membership Drive Rewards Trip together for the past 2 years!

Shop Local!

Shop Local!

Jessica and I both LOVE to shop and we LOVE consignment stores because you can find the best deals without having to pay a ton of $$$$.   Don’t we both look holiday-cute!?!  I’m wearing a black and white stripped sweater (it has some shine to it) from My Girlfriend’s Closet (stores in downtown Cary and downtown Apex).  I could have worn it with a black skirt, but I think the red makes it much more festive and styled for the holidays!  Jessica is wearing a black and white sweater too, her’s has some sequence sewn it, is hard to see in the picture, but in person it was very pretty and had a lot of texture and sparkle.  Jessica got her sweater from Classic Clothiers Consignment Boutique in Cary.  Her shoes (cute wedges) were from My Girlfriend’s Closet.  Why shop at the high dollar stores when you can shop local and get great deals!

Bass Pro Santa Shout-Out

Bass Pro Santa

Bass Pro Santa

And finally, I have to do a Christmas Shout-Out to my work friends…we meet once a month for lunch.  Earlier this week we had our December Christmas Holiday Lunch at Rally Point in Cary.   We have done different Christmas gifts and exchange parties over the years…this year we decided to do a Christmas Wrapping Paper Exchange!   Everyone brought 2 rolls of wrapping paper (or 3 gift bags) and we put them down inside of a black trash bag.  We then drew numbers and took turns grabbing gift wrap out of the bag, OR, you could steal the gift wrap from someone else.  Apparently the Snowman gift wrap is VERY popular among my friends!

After lunch, we went over to Bass Pro Shop in Cary and had our group picture made with Santa Clause.  I mean, how much fun is that !?!?!   I love Bass Pro Shop, even though I don’t hunt and I only fish with my parents.   They have all kinds of cool things in their store!  Plus I got to ride a 4-wheeler out front (well, not really, but I did pretend).  And one final THANKS to My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in this gorgeous Lilly Pulitzer Blayney Ruffle Dress.  The weather has been SO WARM this week,  I knew this colorful dress would be perfect!   Shop at My Girlfriend’s Closet and mention Beccasblog.com to get 10% off your Total Purchase!

ALSO, please remember to VOTE for our Smith & Smith, CPA tree as part of the Town of Cary Gifting Tree Project!!!  Voting goes until Saturday December 19th!  Winners gets $500 to the Charity of their Choice and ours would go to Life Experiences!
