Congrats to MGC and CFF of the Triangle

Bethany, Becca and Lois

Bethany, Becca and Lois

Ahhhh…HELLO FRIDAY!  It’s cold outside, but I like it!  And the weekend is gonna be GREAT!  Whoo-hoo!  I’m a bit behind with some blogs, so I’m hoping to get caught up next week.  Yesterday was a very busy Thursday.  Blake and I went to the My Girlfriend’s Closet Boutique EXPANSION Grand Opening Party yesterday after work at 5pm in downtown Apex.  They recently added a HUGE addition to the back of the boutique and it is just perfect!   The space really opens up and add lots of room for some MORE IMPORTANT accessories…SHOES!!!!  I told Blake that was what I wanted for Christmas!  Sorry to say though…it’s not looking to good for me, but a girl can dream right???

A girl can dream!

A girl can dream!

I adore Lois, Ashley and Bethany, plus the rest of the MGC staff at BOTH stores!  They really care about helping women LOOK and FEEL good, not just about selling clothes and stuff in the store.  I’ve had a wonderful marketing relationship with MGC over the past year and I love being part of the MGC family.  The Apex Chamber of Commerce was there at the Expansion Party and did a very nice Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.  Congrats to Lois and all of MGC for being a huge part of retail in both downtown Apex and downtown Cary.  My Karen Kane top came from the store and was a perfect fit for a busy day!  Check out Bethany dressing her baby-bump super cute too!  Looking good, not much longer before her baby arrives!

CFF with Bank of NC

CFF with Bank of NC

After the MGC ribbon cutting, Blake and I headed over to the UNC Morehead Planetarium and Science Center in Chapel Hill for a fundraising event called Top of the Triangle, honoring the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of the Triangle.  Tia Coppus from Bank of NC, invited us to be guests and attend the dinner and ceremony program.  Bank of NC was a proud Table Sponsor for this worthy event.  This was our first time to the UNC Planetarium and our first opportunity to support the CFF of the Triangle.  We had a wonderful time, congrats to those who supported the event and we were very touched by the whole evening.  After the program we attended a STAR SHOW in the Planetarium, it was really neat!  Thanks Tia for the invite!  Happy weekend everyone!

Come One Come All…to the USA Baseball Extra Innings Networking!

USA Baseball Extra Innings Networking

Once a year we attend a phenomenal event called USA Baseball Extra Innings Networking.   This is an annual event that is hosted by 10+ local Chamber of Commences and draws a crowd of nearly 500+.   It’s ALWAYS a hot & sticky July day, but once you get there and start having fun, you forget about the heat…sort of.  This is an annual favorite event for many in our community and it’s a great way to bring so many business owners AND their families together!   It is a kid-friendly event, so we pack the kiddos in the car after a full days work and head over to the USA Baseball stadium.  The event is FREE to all area Chamber members and includes free food, beverages, USA Baseball player autographs, Triangle-wide networking, giveaways, kids games, silent auction and more!  You literally can’t get enough of this fun afternoon!

Paint Savvy

We got our picture taken with Stormy right when we arrived; he’s the mascot for the Carolina Hurricanes and a favorite for all, both big and small.  We also saw the orange alien who is the mascot for the Cary Invasion basketball team.  We enjoyed some delicious dinner items from lots of different vendors including: Chick-fil-a, Jimmy Johns, The Meat House, and Jason’s Deli.  I fell in love with the squeezed lemonade sugar free drink from Vitamin Water (they were handing them out for free).  Pepsi was also there with a tent handing out free drinks, thank goodness for their Aquafina water on a hot day like that!  We were given nice little red recycled bags from Office Depot (great for carrying around to collect all of our goodies) and Jason’s Deli (along with Moe’s) had paper fans to help keep us cool!  We played LOTS of games and ended up winning three free shirts and several other cool prizes.  You know how much Blake loves a free shirt!  My favorite one from the night is the BRIGHT YELLOW shirt from Dickey’s BBQ Pit

Sisters enjoying the event

Our kids had a total blast getting really cool face painting by Lisa and her team at Paint Savvy Face and Body Art.  They take face painting to a whole new level!  Trent had a really cool GREEN snake painted all around his face and Mark was painted like a bat!  His little buddy, Dylan, was also at the event with is parents and he too picked out the bat face!  They were something else to see!

We always enjoy going to the USA Baseball National Training Complex, here is a little history on the facility:  it is located within the 221 acre Thomas Brooks Park in Cary and opened in 2007, and includes four baseball fields that are maintained at Major League Baseball standards, there is seating for close to 1,800 fans and another 250 on the lawn seats.  All the more reason why the USA Baseball Extra Innings Networkingevent is held here…there is room for all of us!

Cool Stuff

After eating, playing games and networking (we saw lots of Smith & Smith, CPA clients at the event and made some new friends too) we sat down to watch some of the USA Baseball game.  It was a super fun night and on the way to head home, we caught a ride on one of the John Deer Gators by a USA Baseball summer-intern (Jarred) who gave us a lift to our car.  Thanks Jarred!  Another wonderful year for the USA Baseball Extra Innings Networking event!

Horse & Buddy Therapeutic Riding

Horse & Buddy Logo

Horse & Buddy Logo

There is a local organization here that is really making strides around town.  I’m talking about the non-profit corporation called Horse & BuddyHorse & Buddy is a therapeutic riding program for people with disabilities and special needs.  Horse & Buddy is located here in Wake County, NC and enhances their client’s lives through therapeutic horseback riding programs.

"Wild Print" friends at Horse & Buddy Auction

I’ve known about the Horse & Buddy therapeutic program for several years as one of my best friends, Lorrie, takes her son, Seth, there to ride.  Seth has cerebral palsy and the therapeutic riding is excellent for him.  Lorrie and I recently attend a Wine Tasting Auction Fundraiser for the Horse & Buddy program that was hosted by the Cary Juniors Woman’s Club.  The event was held in downtown Apex at the lovely Halle Cultural Arts Center.  This was my first time at the Halle Cultural Arts Center and the building is lovely!  The Apex Chamber hosts lots of events there, but I’ve never been able to attend.  The building is located right in the heart of downtown Apex and serves as an art gallery downstairs with small meeting rooms and has a large upstairs that is perfect for an event of this type.  My friend Autumn LaBarca, Director of Marketing for Doctors Express in Cary invited me to the event and she’s a very active member of the Cary Juniors Woman’s Club.  I’m so glad she asked me to attend as I had a wonderful time!

Sip…A Wine Store with April & baby Jack

The food was delicious, provided by Cary Dinner Fairy (Chef Jenny & Chef Leanne), and the wine was provided by Sip…a Wine Store.  The owner of Sip, April, was there with her brand new baby boy, Jack!  What a trooper!  And she really puts the ‘work’ into the title of a ‘working mom’!  All of the wines were delicious and Lorrie and I had a fabulous time sipping different wines, trying the tasty treats (the chocolates were soooooo good) and bidding on auction items.  A beverage tea station was provided by A Southern Belle and The Yankee Tea Room (I’m almost postive that the blood in my body is 100% sweet tea).  I’ve become quite addicted to local charity auctions over the years and I love seeing which local stores/services are supporting different non-profit auctions through their donations.  I really liked how the silent auction items were bundled in packages…meaning that there were several gifts included in each item.  For example, there was a “Gossip Girl” auction set that included a lovely pair of earrings from Moon&Lola, a turquoise multi-layered beaded necklace by Fedora and a haircut from SalonKroma.  Lorrie and I were busy watching over several of our bids all night long.   I think at one point we were bidding on seven different items!!!  We ended up being BIG winners at the end of the night and just told ourselves that it was for charity so it was all okay.

"Flaunt Yourself" Bidding Item

Plus we did rack up on some nice items!  One set that we won was called “Flaunt Yourself” and included an extraordinary pair of ankle boots from Flaunt Boutique in downtown Apex, a Miche Bag with two covers and a hair salon appointment with Headcase Studios.  I also bid & won a one-of-a-kind apron and gift card to The Cary Café.  The maker of the apron, Julie Majkowski, was at the event and is such a sweet lady!  She introduced herself to me later and told me that she was the maker of the apron.  Her company is called “Make It Your Own Boutique” and she does all kinds of cool & creative arts & fashions.

The Rusty Bucket in Apex, NC

Another local favorite store who donated an auction item is The Rusty Bucket.  I love going in The Rusty Bucket as it makes me feel like I’m shopping on King Street in Boone, NC!  The music & entertainment for the evening was provided by a guy duo known as Carolina Island Boys.

Lorrie with Carolina Island Boys

The Carolina Island Boys (Terry Dean and Bob Walker) were great at covering all styles of music and kept the event lively. They sang everything from Jimmy Buffett to James Taylor, Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown Band and many more!  They also had a silent auction item of “2 hours of music at your choice event” and guess who won that!?!  Yes, Lorrie and I schemed that since Seth is a die-hard-music-fan that the Carolina  Island Boys would be great to have play at Seth’s 16th birthday in February!  So we did our bidding and our winning and now we’ll be planning a wonderful 16th birthday party for Seth-man!   The Carolina Island boys play at local restaurants, wineries, coffee houses, private parties and corproate events.  You can listen to some of their music on YouTube and also click HERE for more.  Seth is going to love them!

Horse & Buddy

Horse & Buddy (Becca, Holly, Janet, Karen & Lorrie)

I enjoyed seeing Jill Swartz of Preston Flowers at the event.  It had been awhile since we’d seen each other, so it was good to catch-up.  Jill and I met years ago at the Cary Chamber Business of Women luncheon.  I also enjoyed sitting with some of the fine ladies from Horse & Buddy, Janet Mason (Executive Director), Karen Burdick (Barn Assistant) and Holly Confroy (Program Director).  These ladies, along with the rest of the staff at Horse & Buddy really do give their all for making sure that their riders have a great experience.  The Horse & Buddy program is so popular that they have a waiting list of riders hoping to get their turn!  If you are looking for a local non-profit to help financially or with volunteer hours, I strongly encourage you to look at Horse & Buddy, especially if you have a love for animals!

Becca & Autumn

Becca & Autumn

Thank you again Autumn for inviting me to this spectacular event!  I had a fantastic time and all of the ladies I met from the Cary Junior Woman’s Club were so nice and inviting. I know first hand that an event of this size and nature takes lots of planning, organizing and of course, ‘man-hours’ of hard work.  The ladies of the Cary Juniors Woman’s Club pulled the event off with such grace and charm.  I really did have a wonderful evening and I plan on attending for the years to come!  I’m also looking forward to pursing membership with this group, I’m hoping to attend a meeting with Autumn soon and find out more.

Our CPA firm is currently taking on new clients, both small business owners and individuals.  We do not charge a fee when meeting with a potential new client and our initial meeting usually lasts 30 min-1hour.  We welcome referrals from our current clients as well as from our awesome local referral partners.  Please contact me to setup a meeting; I look forward to hearing from you soon!

A Cancer book for kids…Surviving to Thriving

cancer book for kids
Amelia with her Cancer book for kids

The Apex Chamber of Commerce held their Women’s Networking luncheon this week at the lovely Cambridge Village of Apex.  I enjoy networking at their meetings as Cam is the one who typically attends the Apex Chamber events on behalf of our office.  The speaker was published author, Amelia Frahm, and her topic was “From Surviving to Thriving-Why Nausea is a Good Thing and Other Advice I Gave My Daughter”.   Amelia is a cancer survivor and faced the tough challenge of trying to find a cancer book for kids that she could use while dealing with her own cancer.  After much research and frustration (her search for a cancer book for kids took place before the internet was readily available to everyone) she finally came to the conclusion that there wasn’t any type of resource of this nature available.  So Amelia started her own publishing company, Nutcracker Publishing, and brought her cancer book for kids to market.  The book is called “Tickles Tabitha’s Cancer-Tankerous Mommy” and helps parents relate with their children during the treatment and trials of cancer.  Amelia shared her ups and downs of getting her company created and launched at the luncheon.  She was a very good speaker and her topic is one that really reaches out to so many women, especially many in the room today.  Amelia also has another book called “Nuclear Power, How a Nuclear Power Plant Really Works!”   She was selling both of her books at the luncheon today and the response seemed very positive.  The quote from Amelia that stuck with me the most is “Surviving is the easy part…Thriving is the hard part”.

Cancer book for kids

Tickles Tabitha’s Cancer-Tankerous Mommy

Since publishing her cancer book for kids, Amelia has been endorsed by The Susan B. Komen Foundation, invited to talk on live national TV shows, been a highly sought-after radio guest, and has been invited to join some major cancer-support speaking bureaus.  Thank you Amelia for a very heartwarming and moving presentation today!

The Executive Director from Cambridge Village of Apex, Mark Wilson, greeted us during lunch and gave a brief overview of the lovely facility.  The sponsors for the luncheon were Apex Obstetrics & Gynecology (Dr. Peck) and Primrose School of West Cary.  Apex OBGYN is the first and only OBGYN office in Apex and Dr. Peck attended the luncheon today with this wife, Judy and their office assistant, Keisha.  Tony and Tori Scuderi are the franchise owners for Primrose School and Tori was there for lunch.  My Girlfriend’s Closet and Abloom’n Garden provided door prizes for the event.  I was happy to sit with Rosemary Gray and Joy Wilkes.  Rosemary works at Daniel’s Florist, which is owned by, Daniel Wakeley, who also owns Abloom’n Garden.   Joy is the owner of New Neighbor Welcome

Have you ever heard of a cancer book for kids?  I love how Amelia was persistent and followed her desire to reach a market that was untapped.  She truly is a pioneer in this area!

We enjoy doing business with Apex Chamber members.  Please let me know if you are a member of the Apex Chamber and you are seeking CPA service or would like to find out more about what our CPA practice could offer you!

Women’s Networking Group and Savor Apex

Women's Networking Group
Heather Mohr & Becca with Sharon Hill

Are you looking for a women’s networking group to get involved with?  If so, then seriously STOP and look no further!   WBON of Cary (Women Business Owners Network) is a women’s networking group that serves ladies in the entire Triangle area and beyond!  We’ve been part of this community for over 15 years and we continue to live up to our motto of ENSPIRING, EDUCATING and MOTIVATING women in the business world.   Our September meeting brought some exciting new changes for us we as moved our meeting to the gorgeous Prestonwood Country Club in Cary.  We had an excellent turnout with over 50+ ladies and most arrived early to participate in the networking circles.   We had some travel issues today as President Obama was visiting and speaking at WestStar Precision in Apex, NC, so all of the major interstates were blocked with high security.  Nevertheless, our dynamic speaker, Sharon Hill, arrived and she had a show-stopping-knocked-it-out-of-the-park presentation!  I NEVER get tired of hearing Sharon speak on etiquette, poise, posture and expectations for women!  She truly knows how to speak on the topic of etiquette and she helped our women’s networking group “Pump Up Our Professionalism“, just as she promised in her speaking topic!

Women's Networking Group

We had a HUGE crowd of guests and we also welcomed several new members to our women’s networking group with gift bags that were filled with gifts from our Board and Sponsors (we all love a gift bag right!?!).  Our lunch-sponsor was John Summers of Chyten Educational Learning Center, a new business located in Cary.  I was pleased to have a few minutes before the meeting to mix and mingle with some of our guests.  I had a great time talking with Joy Barber (District Manager) and Elizabeth Honeycutt (Regional Vice President ) of Flex-Pay and I also enjoyed meeting Stacey Shanahan, (Owner) of CDS Productions.  I was happy to see a familiar face from the Triangle Ladies Lunch, Felicia Anderson of Arbonne!  A big THANK YOU to everyone who made this women’s networking group luncheon such a huge success today!  And a special thanks to JoAnn and the other female catering employee at Preston CC who helped add more tables (we needed more seats!!! YEA!!!) to our room to accommodate our growing guest list!  Both ladies were so helpful and took excellent care of us during our meeting!  Make sure you join us next month for our Annual Fall Mega-Networking luncheon!

Apex Savor 2011

The Apex Chamber of Commerce also hosted their annual Savor Apex event on Wednesday, an event with delicious food and fun treats for Apex Chamber members.  The weather was lovely, so the event was held outside under a large tent with tables and chairs for comfortable seating.  Cam attended the event on behalf of our CPA firm and also took along his wife, Brooke, and their two young children.  You can see Cam holding his daughter in this picture made by one of the Apex Chamber staff.  Congrats to the Apex Chamber for such a nice event and for gaining national news by have President Obama visit Apex!

Did you attend the Savor Apex event?  Have you ever visited with WBON of Cary at one of their monthly meetings?

Our CPA firm is growing and we are proudly taking on new clients.  We have several niche markets with women business owned companies, IT/Business consultants and hair salons.  If you know any business owners currently looking for a professional CPA service, please send them our way!  We are also busy during the new few weeks helping individuals who filed extensions for their personal tax returns meet the October 15th deadline.  Please let me know if we can help you!

Companies in Cary & Ribbon Cutting

Companies in Cary
Elizabeth of Prime Pay helps Companies in Cary

We live in a great area and if you didn’t know that, then just look around!  There are so many different companies in Cary that range from mom & pop restaurants all the way up to big corporations.  There are also several companies in Cary that have located their headquarters in this area (Consonus, ABB and Lord to just name a few).   As a CPA firm, we are always looking for other business partners in the area that offer services to small business companies in Cary and we try to develop a referral relationship with them.  By connecting with best local professionals and having a solid relationship in place, we are then confident when it comes to referring our clients to them when they need their specific service.   For example, Elizabeth Williams of PrimePay (a local payroll service for small-medium companies in Cary)  has become a trusted referral partner for us.  I’ve known Elizabeth for a while, she used to work at Lifetime Fitness and when the position for her opened at PrimePay, it was too good of an opportunity for her to pass up.  So I quote the advice of a good friend of mine, Steve Hand, (Executive Director for BNI in this area)  “You do business with the people that you know, like and trust”.  Elizabeth stopped by the office earlier this week to deliver an intriguing blip from an online column called “Mind Your Business”.   Here is the link for the blog site, I think you will enjoy reading it!  The title is “6 Successful Business Lessons from Starbucks & Oprah”.   Click HERE to read the full article.

Apex Chamber Ribbon Cutting

All 4 Paws

Greeters at All 4 Paws

Cam took time from work last week to attend the ribbon cutting of another new business, All 4 Paws.  The ribbon cutting was hosted by the Apex Chamber as they welcomed All 4 Paws, an animal hospital, into their chamber as a new member.

Are you looking for ways to connect with other companies in Cary, Raleigh, Apex and other parts of The Triangle?  My advice would be to get involved with your local Chamber of Commerce and other networking groups.   That is the best way to get plugged-in!

Modern Woodman Ribbon Cutting

Once again Cam has been busy this week attending several different Apex Chamber of Commerce Events.  This week he went to a ribbon cutting and to the opening of the new Apex playground.  The ribbon cutting was for Modern Woodman (he is hiding really well in this picture).   He also attended the grand opening of the Jaycee Park Playground that is Apex’s new $21,000 playground.  The playground was built entirely with donated funds.  The new Apex Playground is located at 451 W. Williams Street in Apex.   Cam’s wife, Brooke, and their two young children attended the event as well.

Cam was pleased to attend the Apex Chamber AM Networking event that was hosted by Batteries Plus on Thursday, August 18th.  The crowd was strong with about 30+ in attendance.  Cam spoke with Mark Reeves of Batteries Plus, Alison Terwillger of BB&T, Andy Majette from RBC Bank, and Stacy Danzey from Carolina Porable Storage (PODS).  Donuts, coffee and other morning beverages were served for a delicious breakfast treat.

Apex Chamber Business After Hours

Blake and Cam attended the Apex Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours last week.  The event was hosted at Bella Casa Clubhouse on Thursday, August 11th.  They enjoyed networking with all of the people in attendance and also met some new Apex Chamber members.   I found these great pictures to share from their Facebook page.  I have to rely on pictures to be taken by other people when I am not around to snap them myself!   Blake is in the picture with Bob Sides of Visual Advantage Signs and also with a new friend, David Newton of PrePaid Legal

I was also happy to see one of my new friends, Autumn LaBarca in one of the pictures (and I LOVE that green paint color on the walls in the social room!).   Autumn works as the Director of Marketing for Doctor’s Express, owned by one of my WBON Board Members, Lisa Cotter.

We love ribbon cuttings!  It’s a great way to welcome new businesses to the area and also a great way to help current businesses celebrate milestones (number of years in business, a new location, a new expansion, etc.)   Being a member of a local chamber of commerce is a great way to be invited to attend ribbon cutting ceremonies.  The Cary Chamber has been my ‘baby’ when it comes to chamber involvement, but we are also proud members of the Apex Chamber of Commerce.  Since Cam and his family live in Apex, he has really taken the opportunity to get involved and attend many of their Chamber events.

Cam recently attended the Ribbon Cutting for PC MedEvac, a computer tech company that has been around in this area for many years.  They wanted to celebrate their new location with a ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Apex Chamber.  I’ve known the owners, Matt and Theresa Carter, for several years and can give a personal testimony that they do excellent work and really live up to their logo of “no Geek Speak” when it comes to helping with computer issues.  Congrats to Matt and Theresa and CHEERS to the success of PC MedEvac!

Cam is in the picture above, he’s hiding behind Matt’s right shoulder (middle of the picture)

If you are looking for a local CPA or accountant in the Raleigh or Cary area, I hope you will consider our CPA firm!  We are taking on new small business clients at this time and we’d love to serve you.  Please contact me for more information.

Thanks!
