The HOT NOW Sign is ON!

HOT NOW from Krispy Kreme with Smith & Smith, CPA

HOT NOW from Krispy Kreme with Smith & Smith, CPA

So the Southern Summer HEAT has decided to make a LATE appearance in the South this year…temps this week in North Carolina have been in the mid-90’s but it FEELS much hotter outside!  Speaking of HOT…we all know that famous HOT NOW sign that is related to the ONE AND ONLYKrispy Kreme DoughnutsYUMMY!    I had the pleasure of hearing Kelley O’Brien speak today at the Triangle American Marketing Association meeting.  Kelley is the Director of Social, Interactive and Digital Marketing at Krispy Kreme Doughuts and shared with Triangle AMA today about her 16+ years in digital marketing and the ways that Krispy Kreme is using it to make them successful.  The most interesting I learned form Kelley was how POPULAR the brand has been and continues to be after 77 years of starting in Winston Salem, NC, plus the HOT NOW app on the phone (so cool, who knew!?!?!?)

I went to East Carolina University and was blessed (or cursed depending on how you look at it) to have a Krispy Kreme Doughnut store RIGHT ACROSS from campus and I swear, the HOT NOW sign was ALWAYS ON!!!!!  I always enjoy the Triangle AMA meetings and a big thanks for a great meeting and the FREE HOT NOW doughnuts that were brought for all of the 200+ attendees!  They brought along 34 dozen doughnuts!  And there just happened to be several boxes left over so I brought one back to the office to share with the Smith & Smith, CPA crew!  Boy they were happy!  I mean, who doesn’t love a HOT NOW Krispy Kreme Doughnut on a HOT summer day at the end of August!?!?!  Plus, check out my cool seahorse shirt from Smith & Smith, CPA client, Vestique!

Marketing to the Millennials with Jeff Fromm

Mary, Susan, Sheila and Becca

Mary, Susan, Sheila and Becca

Anyone else start their morning off super early?  It’s been a long day but a great day and still more to come!  I had the pleasure of attending the Women on the Move meeting this morning at the Downtown Clubs of Raleigh (used to be the Cardinal and Capital City Clubs but are now combined into one).  My dear friend Susan Pruskin invited Mary Madenspacher and me to join her at the early morning meeting.  The guest speaker at Women on the Move was Sheila Ogle (one of our favorite and most admired women in Cary, and all of Wake County).  Sheila shared her personal career story and engaged the ladies in the room into a conversation about “What Success Means to You“.  Sheila broke “Success” down into the areas of: Trusting Yourself, Breaking Some Rules, Working Hard, Giving Back, Surrounding Yourself with Successful People, and Not Being Afraid to Fail.  Thank you Susan for inviting me to breakfast and the Women on the Move really are ‘women on the move‘!

This afternoon I attended the May meeting of the Triangle AMA (American Marketing Association).  The guest speaker was Jeff Fromm, EVP at Barkley advertising agency and co-author of a best-selling new book, “Marketing to Millennials: Reach the Largest and Most Influential Generation of Consumers Ever“.  I thought Jeff did a terrific presentation and I learned so much from him about this very diverse and adventurous consumer group!  He addressed the areas of consumer loyalty, preventing boredom, and engaging the consumer.  He stressed the importance of Brand Authority and creating a Uniqueness to validate your price authority.  He talked about reaching Millennials by having a company that is “about more than just your bottom line” and showed a ton of really cool product marketing videos and how they are using real time date with content management.

I’ve got some great ideas now for Smith & Smith, CPA…especially for videos and other ‘disruptive‘ techniques!  Thanks Jeff for coming to speak to Triangle AMA and also for taking time to get a quick selfie with me on your way out the door (I ran across the room after the meeting to track him down for a picture!)  I’ll be back at Triangle AMA in June and I’m taking our Summer Intern, Trevor, along with me to hear about the story and marketing creativity behind the Travelocity gnome!

Be careful out there tonight in the crazy rain and storms! I’m off to Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club…feel free to join me!  Thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in the Blue Nanette Lepore dress!  It is so unique and I’ve had tons of compliments on it all day long!  Lois and her staff know how to dress women of all different shapes and sizes for all types of events!  Shop their downtown Cary and downtown Apex stores and tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get 10% off your total purchase!

CMO Jeff Jones Speaks to the AMA

Christine, Jeff and Becca with our Target Red Cards

Christine, Jeff and Becca with our Target Red Cards

Last week I had the pleasure of attending the American Marketing Association Triangle Chapter monthly luncheon. My good friend,
Christine Johnson, invited me to attend, as she knew the speaker was one that I would enjoy.  The speaker was Jeff Jones, the Chief Marketing Officer for Target Corporation.  I can honestly say that I do my fair share of shopping at Target and getting to hear the CMO speak was really cool.  He was very open and candid about the marketing strategies for Target and even showed some of their unique new commercials that promote their grocery department (see the video clip below).  Jeff shared with us that the best advice he had ever been given was “Job security is knowing that you are good enough to get another job”.  Thanks Christine for inviting me! I look forward to joining the American Marketing Association soon!  Seems like a good fit for my job title.

Thanks also to Lois Cozart and her ‘fashion team’ at My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary and downtown Apex for dressing me in this Jessica Howard black & white polka dot dress.  It certainly had a ‘derby style’ feel to it and was similar to the one that Julia Roberts wore in the movie Pretty Woman so many years ago.  At least I thought so!  Mention Beccasblog.com the next time you shop at My Girlfriend’s Closet and get 10% off your total purchase!  Like them on Facebook too so you can keep up with their sales & other great events.
