Scholarship Program for WBON of Cary 2014-2015

Becca Smith & Steve Hand

Becca Smith & Steve Hand

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the WBON of Cary monthly May luncheon.  I was thrilled to hear my good friend and client of Smith & Smith, CPA, Steve Hand, speak on none other then NETWORKING!!!!!!  Steve is the MASTER of Networking in this area and is the proud owner of Business Network International (BNI) for a good majority of the state of North Carolina.  I have learned so much from Steve over the years about networking etiquette, the Do’s and Don’ts and so much more.   Steve gave an excellent presentation and covered such topics like “You need to build deeper relationships and put systems in place in order to generate and predict your referrals, Join a networking group and work it hard, get your target market identified and work from there.”  He also said that having people who like, care and respect you is NOT ENOUGH for them when it comes to sending referrals.  You have to make sure they KNOW what you do and HOW to refer to you.

He covered a 5-Step Referral Process and took a few questions at the end.   Steve is a dynamic speaker and kept the group of women engaged through his entire talk by asking different people to help read questions and using real-life example.  Great job Steve!   Yesterday was also the day that the WBON of Cary awarded their 2014-2015 Scholarship Fund Recipients.  Each year WBON of Cary gives 2-3 scholarships to women business owners and professional working women in the Cary Community.   I had applied this year and was THRILLED to have been awarded one of the scholarships!!!!   Such an exciting surprise!  WBON of Cary had been a large part of my networking and marketing focus over the past 10 years and to receive this scholarship is such an honor!

Congrats to Lois!!

Congrats to Lois!!

The scholarship is to be used for any type of educational training, classes, certifications, and to improve skills and knowledge in your focused area of business.  You have two years to use the scholarship. I plan to attend another marketing & blog conference and use that knowledge to further develop my blog into some new and exciting areas…so stay tuned!!!!!  The other scholarship was awarded to my dear friend, Lois Cozart, Owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet!!!!!!!   Lois and I were thrilled for each other!  I’ve been working with Lois for about 3-years now in a clothing-marketing relationship.

Local to the Table!  Farm to Table with Lucky 32 Southern Kitchen in Cary

Dinner at Lucky 32

Last night was such a fun time!  Our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club had a very nice dinner event with a Farm to Table Dinner and Presentation at Lucky 32 Southern Kitchen in Cary.   The General Manger, Shane Garrity, is a member of our club and worked with me on plans to put the evening event together.  We had a limited number of seats, 24, and it filled up right away!   Guest arrived around 5:30pm and we started our program promptly at 5:45pm.

Perfect time!

Shane was our host and told us the story of Lucky 32 Southern Kitchen, about they started, their mission about supporting local farmers and giving back to the community.  They also reach out to those in the community who are often overlooked and underprivileged.  We heard about the other restaurants & hotels who are part of the Lucky 32 family, which are all located in Greensboro, NC.  Shane also introduce their Head Chef, who just so happens to be self-taught in culinary!  He also took time to share different points about the food, farms, and other interesting facts about Lucky 32.

Our first course was an appetizer of Voodoo Pig Bread, paired with Foggy Ridge Cider.  Sooooooo good!   The cider is from a farm in Virgina and the Voodoo Pig Bread is a favorite at Lucky 32!  The Voodoo Sauce is made & bottled local and sells at the restaurant and also at local grocery stores.   Other vendors for this course include Goat Lady Diary and Heritage Farm.   Our next course was the main entree and was Cornmeal Catfish, Collard Greens, Old Mill of Guilford Creamy Grits paired with Red Oak Beer.  Those who picked the vegetarian option had the famous Lucky 32 Black Bean cakes with sour cream sauce and kale greens.   Talking points for this course included Carolina Classics Catfish Farm, Collard Greens from Southern Living, Old Mill of Guilford and Red Oak Brewery.  Our final course was homemade season ice cream (cherry chocolate-chip flavor) and fresh coffee!

Shane talked about the coffee from Counter Culture Coffee in Durham and how they roast the beans AFTER they have received the order and that Lucky 32 uses their Blend #46 but that their sister restaurants use a different blend.  The coffee was really good and the cream too!  Shane and Chef opened the conversation up to questions and talked more about their vendors, the level of quality and trust that they expect and the little things that make them different from other restaurants in town. It was such a fun night and a BIG thank you to Shane and Chef and the wonderful waitstaff for taking such great care of our event!  I know everyone had a fabulous time!  Thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for selecting the coral maxi dress for me to wear!  Her stores, located in downtown Cary and downtown Apex are BUSTING at the doors with all kinds of beautiful summer dresses, tops, skirts and accessories!  Shop there and tell them Becca sent you to get 10% off your total purchase!

Frill Shark Tank Guest Speaker at Cary Chamber

Frill Clothing owners, Sharon and Kate, speak to Business of Women

Frill Clothing owners, Sharon and Kate, speak to Business of Women

Last Thursday was the FINAL luncheon meeting in the Cary Chamber of Commerce Business of Women Luncheon Series.  This annual event runs from September to May and features a monthly ladies lunch meeting at Prestonwood Country Club along with a guest speaker, door prizes and networking!  I rarely miss this event and always enjoy meeting new Cary Chamber members as well as seeing friends & referral partners, plus the delicious food!!!!  For the final Business of Women in the 2014-2015 year, the Cary Chamber invited local celebrities and female entrepreneurs, Kate and Sharon, owners of Frill Clothing to come and share their business story.

Frill was recently featured on the popular television show, Shark Tank, where they received a deal with two of the shark investors.  The Cary Chamber thought it would be a great idea to invite them to speak and share their experience with other professional working women and other female entrepreneurs.   Sharon and Kate shared their story from the beginning of how they met in grade school, kept in touch over the years, tossed the idea back and forth about going into business together, how they got their idea and discovered an unmet need in the niche market of the Sorority world on college campuses (not only in USA, but also in other countries) and the rest is history!

The girls were very candid about their experiences from their college internships, all the way to working with local seamstress & picking designs, to some challenges they have faced along the way, plus changes they have made and obstacles they have overcome.  I really enjoyed hearing the ladies speak and their story is very inspiring!  Sharon mentioned several times that it just takes determination and a willingness to succeed, no matter what the cause!   Thanks so much to the Cary Chamber for hosting Sharon and Kate and for closing out the Business of Women Luncheon Series with such a fun presentation!    Smith & Smith, CPA is proud to represent Frill Clothing as their CPA and we know they have years of success ahead of them!  I look forward to the Business of Women starting again in September 2015!
