And the Winners Are…Cary Women’s Giving Network Announces Their 2014 Grant Awards Recipients

Earlier this week I attended the Cary Women’s Giving Network Grant Awards Luncheon at the Matthew’s House in downtown Cary.

Gail, Beth, Jennifer and Sheila of the Cary Women's Giving Network

Gail, Beth, Jennifer and Sheila of the Cary Women’s Giving Network

The Cary Women’s Giving Network is under the Cary Community Foundation (part of the North Carolina Community Foundation) and is made up of women of all ages, backgrounds, careers and life experiences in the Cary area.  The main focus is to bring together resources to those in need in our community.  The Cary Women’s Giving Network was formed in 2011 and provides grants to nonprofits serving Cary, under the direction of its full membership.  I have been involved with this group for about a year and really enjoy all of the women involved and love the mission!

I was pleased to help serve this year on the 2014 Grants Committee, which was led by Sarah Perkins (Grants Chair).  We met back in early-April and had read through about 24 grant applications from local non-profits in the Cary/Wake County area.  During our meeting we discussed each application and narrowed them down to our top eight and then presented those eight to the CWGN membership for consideration/final selection.  It was such a tough process as all 24 groups had missions that they were very passionate about and serve very specific needs in our community.  We had a total of $17,000 to give in grant awards and selected FOUR finalists.

The finalists as well as ALL of the applicants were invited to the Grant Awards Luncheon on Tuesday.  We had a delicious lunch (cheers to the chef at the Matthews House) and I enjoyed helping greet all of the ladies as they arrived.  Sheila Ogle (CWGN Co-Founder and owner of the Matthews House) started off the program with a welcome, she was followed Jennifer Robinson (also a CWGN Co-Founder and Cary Town Council) who introduced the two speakers.

Heather and Judy of the CWGN

Senator Tamara Barringer, NC State Senate, District 17, gave a powerful talk on Foster Care and Children’s Advocacy in NC and included some of her very personal life stories.  Then Cary Councilwoman, Gale Adcock, spoke about Access to Health Care Across NC and gave some staggering statistics!   Both of these ladies were well-spoken and were very ‘real’ with the audience about what is happening in NC and how we can make changes together for the BETTER.  Sarah Perkins led the Presentation of the 2014 Grant Awards and each recipient was asked to share about their organization and how the funds would be used.  The four recipients were: Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, $5,000 (Providing weekend backpacks to 23 kids in a Cary School for a whole year!  Each backpack includes 6 meals for that weekend);

BEGINNINGS for Parents of Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, $5,000 (Will provide ear molds for hearing aids for children under 5 years old); The Mariposa School for Children with Autism, $5,000 (will provide a new observation room for parents); and CASA (Community Alternatives for Supportive Abodes), $2,000, (Will provide funding for local Cary citizens who are in housing crisis).  It was wonderful to hear from each recipient and they were all so grateful for the gifts from the Women’s Giving Network of Cary.

I want to say thank you to Katie Crumpler, Regional Associate for the NC Community Foundation for all of her support and guidance to the WGNC.  What a wonderful luncheon and thank you to the Matthews House for hosting (a client of Smith & Smith, CPA).   Thank you also to My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary (and downtown Apex) for dressing me in the Kate Spade Striped Blaise Dress!  It was perfect for the event and the gold buttons down the back added a bit of a surprise to the dress!   MGC has a TON of great spring and summer dresses!  Stop by and tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get 10% of your total purchase!

Bulls Game with Bank of NC

I don’t know about where you live, but the weather around here this past weekend was NOTHING short of AMAZING!

Durham Bulls Game

Durham Bulls Game

Friday was overcast and a little cool, but made for a PERFECT night to watch some baseball!  Our family had the pleasure of being invited to attend the Durham Bulls game on Friday night for Customer Appreciation Night with Bank of NC.  Smith & Smith, CPA has a very strong relationship with Bank of NC and we were honored to be invited to join them for a night of baseball and more!  Tia Coppus, Treasury Services, for Bank of NC invited us along and seriously it was one of the best nights out at the American Tobacco Campus in Durham.

Bank of NC friends and clients

Bank of NC friends and clients

Bank of NC was hosting their event on the Party Deck and it was full of clients, friends, referral partners and families who all support the banks employees and staff.  Blake and I met Tia and her husband, Ethan, back in late summer of 2013 on the Cary Chamber Membership Drive Rewards Trip (Mexico!) and we’ve been good friends ever since.  The relationship has worked out well too business-wise as CPA firms and bankers can often refer clients back and forth.

Alisha and Tia of Bank of NC

Alisha and Tia of Bank of NC

In our ‘traditional Smith Family Style’ we took along EVERYONE and all of the kids (cousins) were excited to be together.  The Party Deck at Durham Bulls offers catered food (super yummy) with all kinds of good ‘ballpark food and drinks’, plus table seating and stadium seating for watching the game, and it is located right behind 3rd base.  We all enjoyed meeting others at the party and Tia was a very gracious hostess.  The kids loved watching the game and we took them over to the Wool E. Bull (mascot for the Durham Bulls) play area in the 7th Inning to let them run wild and play in the play center.  bulls 4The Durham Bulls gave a good fight in the game but ended up losing my 1 run!  The evening ended with one of the BEST firework displays ever!  Many thanks to Tia and the entire group at Bank of NC for hosting such a fun night and for including us!  Did you notice Blake being supportive wearing his Bank of NC shirt???? He’s a great supporter of Bank of NC!  And check out my gold Tory Burch top from My Girlfriend’s Closet…thanks Lois Cozart for always picking such great things for me to wear from your store!  Check them out in downtown Cary and downtown Apex…ladies consignment, plus tons of accessories!  Tell them you read Beccasblog.com and get 10% off your purchase!

Let’s Have FUN..and GOLF too!  Ladies Golf Tournament

Smith & Smith, CPA proud sponsor

Smith & Smith, CPA proud sponsor

When the weather is bad for the day of a scheduled golf tourney, what do you DO!?!?  Well, if you work at the Cary Chamber of Commerce, you simply MOVE the DATE to a BETTER WEATHER DAY!  And that is exactly what happened this year with the Cary Chamber Fore Ladies Golf Tournament.  The event was scheduled for the last week of April, but with a very serious severe weather threat on the way, they made the decision to change the date and push it back a week.  It worked and we had BEAUTIFUL weather with partly cloudy skies and mid-80 temperatures.  Smith & Smith, CPA was proud to be a sponsor for the ladies golf tournament and all of the volunteer t-shirts had our company name on them (plus they were PINK!)  Alicia and I were there to help with the ladies golf tournament events, Alica worked the Putting Green Competition and I drove the all-so-famous Beverage Cart with Nancy from Atlantic Tire.

Cary Chamber Ladies Golf Tournament

We had a really nice time driving the course and watching the ladies play while chatting with them along the way.  Alicia had a very beautiful set of jewelry from  J.M. Edwards Jewelry that was the prize for the Putting Green Contest, sadly, none of the ladies won.  The ladies golf tournament was held at Lochmere Golf Club and they treat us so well!   After the event there was a huge party upstairs on the patio with food from Catering Works and tons of prizes, plus corn hole tournament sponsored by Sally Cox State Farm.  Thanks so much to all of the ladies who came out to play and for spending the day with the Cary Chamber on the golf course.  Thanks also to the Cary Chamber staff for making this event possible and for all of their hard work and dedication to the ladies in our community.

Cary Chamber Small Business Excellence Awards 2014

I have to sing out a BIG CONGRATS for a VERY SPECIAL place in Cary!  CONGRATS TO LIFE EXPERIENCES!!!!!

Mary and Becca, Charitable Partner Award

Mary and Becca, Charitable Partner Award

Yesterday was the 2014 Small Business Excellence Awards for the Cary Chamber of Commerce.  I look forward to this event each year as it honors the small businesses in the Cary area.  Small businesses are still the backbone of the economy and it’s a day to really recognize those who are working hard and growing successful companies, despite the day-to-day challenges they face.  I was so honored to be included in the awards ceremony and as a member of the Cary Chamber Board of Directors serving as Vice Chair for Membership Services, I was asked to present three awards; Community Service, Employer of the Year and Charitable Partner. The small business awards luncheon was held at Embassy Suites and had over 160+ people in attendance.  The event was sponsored by NewBridge Bank and featured 7 different awards.

Small Business of the Year, The Matthews House

The winners are as follows: Small Business Innovation: Bliss Real Estate Group – Keller Williams Realty, Community Service Award: Triangle Rock Climb , Green Plus Award: Stone School Supply, Employer of the Year: Massage Envy Cary, Entrepreneurial Award in Education: Mills Park, Charitable Partner: Life Experiences and Small Business of the Year: The Matthews House.  Congrats to all of the small business nominees as well as the winners (The Matthews House is a client of Smith & Smith, CPA).  I was so happy to personally give the award to Mary Madenspacher, Executive Director of Life Experiences.  Kudos to the Cary Chamber for putting on a fantastic Small Business Excellence Awards and for taking time to honor all small businesses in the area!

Internship with Accounting & Marketing

Bob with Trevor

Bob with Trevor

So our first ever college summer intern arrived at the office of Smith & Smith, CPA today!  His name is Trevor Fillingame and he happens to be Bob’s nephew, so we are still keeping it “in the family”.   Trevor graduated from Cary  High School a few years ago and  is now a rising Junior at Appalachian State University in beautiful Boone, NC.  He is studying Accounting and Marketing and loves everything about the Boone area and ASU campus.  We’ve been by to visit him several times during the past few years and he really seems to be embracing those college years!

Welcome Trevor to Smith & Smith, CPA

Welcome Trevor to Smith & Smith, CPA

Trevor will be working with us this summer and will learn the ins-and-outs of small business accounting in the ‘real world’ and will do some marketing/shadowing with me at different events in May, June and July.  We are excited to have him here and it’s going to be a fun summer!  Stop by the office to say HELLO to Trevor anytime you are in the area.  His office is set-up beside of Alicia and he’ll be training with Bob, Blake and Cam on different parts of the business.  Maybe this will work out well for Trevor and he’ll consider joining Smith & Smith, CPA after graduation in a few years?!?!?  (Blake is not in the picture because he is playing in the NCACPA Golf Tournament today as a guest of PrimePay Payroll)

Note in Pocket with Jenn

Note in Pocket with Jenn

Hope you had a nice weekend.  Friday night we went to see the Off Broadway Play, Driving Miss Daisy.  It was a wonderful play and I’ve been a fan of the movie since I first saw it in 1989 when Morgan Freeman played the role of  “Hoke”.   We only have one play left in our NC Theater Season Ticket series…”The Little Mermaid” will be at the end of July.   On Saturday morning I was excited to participate in the Note in the Pocket Inaugural Socks & Undie 5k Rundie Race.  The event was held over on the Doretha Dix Campus in Raleigh and it was a beautiful day for a morning run!  I met my friend, Jenn Smith, there and also saw several other friends from Note In The Pocket (Susan Pruskin and Dallas). Jenn finished first in her age bracket (way to go Jenn!!!) and they were taking collections of new socks and undies for kids in Wake County.  Such a wonderful organization and I was happy to be there to help support and spread the word of their mission, all by putting in 3.1miles on the pavement!  On Sunday we went to Greenville, NC to visit with my parents and to celebrate Mother’s Day.

Ladyfingers Catering

Ladyfingers Catering

I took a freshly made chicken pot pie that I got from Lois Cozart at My Girlfriend’s Closet…they have partnered with Ladyfingers Catering and now offer delicious home-cooked food in a ready-to-take-and-bake freezer in their  Apex store location. I picked up the pie and it made for a VERY yummy Mother’s Day lunch!  We also got to spend some time walking around the ECU campus and thinking about our ‘old college‘ days….ahhhh.…ECU has a beautiful campus and we really enjoyed looking at the new dorms (omg…they have air condition now!!!) plus the other new areas and even walked in downtown Greenville and took a moment to read the memorial at Greenville Town Commons at the devastating flood in 1999 from Hurricane Floyd.  Crazy how fast time has passed….

Hope you have a great week!  The month of May is zipping right on by and summertime is here!

Marketing to the Millennials with Jeff Fromm

Mary, Susan, Sheila and Becca

Mary, Susan, Sheila and Becca

Anyone else start their morning off super early?  It’s been a long day but a great day and still more to come!  I had the pleasure of attending the Women on the Move meeting this morning at the Downtown Clubs of Raleigh (used to be the Cardinal and Capital City Clubs but are now combined into one).  My dear friend Susan Pruskin invited Mary Madenspacher and me to join her at the early morning meeting.  The guest speaker at Women on the Move was Sheila Ogle (one of our favorite and most admired women in Cary, and all of Wake County).  Sheila shared her personal career story and engaged the ladies in the room into a conversation about “What Success Means to You“.  Sheila broke “Success” down into the areas of: Trusting Yourself, Breaking Some Rules, Working Hard, Giving Back, Surrounding Yourself with Successful People, and Not Being Afraid to Fail.  Thank you Susan for inviting me to breakfast and the Women on the Move really are ‘women on the move‘!

This afternoon I attended the May meeting of the Triangle AMA (American Marketing Association).  The guest speaker was Jeff Fromm, EVP at Barkley advertising agency and co-author of a best-selling new book, “Marketing to Millennials: Reach the Largest and Most Influential Generation of Consumers Ever“.  I thought Jeff did a terrific presentation and I learned so much from him about this very diverse and adventurous consumer group!  He addressed the areas of consumer loyalty, preventing boredom, and engaging the consumer.  He stressed the importance of Brand Authority and creating a Uniqueness to validate your price authority.  He talked about reaching Millennials by having a company that is “about more than just your bottom line” and showed a ton of really cool product marketing videos and how they are using real time date with content management.

I’ve got some great ideas now for Smith & Smith, CPA…especially for videos and other ‘disruptive‘ techniques!  Thanks Jeff for coming to speak to Triangle AMA and also for taking time to get a quick selfie with me on your way out the door (I ran across the room after the meeting to track him down for a picture!)  I’ll be back at Triangle AMA in June and I’m taking our Summer Intern, Trevor, along with me to hear about the story and marketing creativity behind the Travelocity gnome!

Be careful out there tonight in the crazy rain and storms! I’m off to Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club…feel free to join me!  Thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in the Blue Nanette Lepore dress!  It is so unique and I’ve had tons of compliments on it all day long!  Lois and her staff know how to dress women of all different shapes and sizes for all types of events!  Shop their downtown Cary and downtown Apex stores and tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get 10% off your total purchase!

NCACPA Golf and HELLO FRIDAY!

Smith & Smith, CPA

Smith & Smith, CPA

The weekend is finally here again!  Seems like it rolls around really fast each week.  Our Summer Intern, Trevor, has had a very good first week on the job and is doing excellent with his training.  His sweet girlfriend of nearly 3 years, Michelle, came by the office today to say hello and to see Trevor in his real-life-work-environment!  Michelle is also a student at App State and is here for the summer and looking for a job too, so if you know of anyone looking to hire some excellent summer help, please let me know! It’s been a fairly quiet day at the Smith & Smith, CPA office and we are working hard to get personal tax returns with extensions completed, though the deadline is not until October.

NCACPA golfBlake had a nice time on Monday playing in the NCACPA Triangle Chapter Annual Member Guest Golf Tournament.  The tournament was held at River Ridge Golf Club in Raleigh and Blake played as a guest of Amy Gretenstein of PrimePay Payroll.  The tournament proceeds went to benefit the NCACPA Chapter Scholarship Fund.  Blake played on a team with Susan Weaver (Bookkeeping Express) and Joel Levy (Joel L. Levy, CPA in Chapel Hill) and Dennis Sargent (Law Office of Dennis Jay Sargent Jr, PLLC).  They had a beautiful weather day and a lot of fun on the 4 1/2 star golf course.  The event featured breakfast, range balls, golf, cookout, prizes, networking and players of all skill levels.  PrimePay Payroll was the Golf Cart sponsor for the NCACPA golf tournament and we appreciate Amy inviting Blake to play.

Have a great weekend!

A Day of Volunteering at Dorcas in Cary

Cary-Kildaire Rotary at Dorcas

Cary-Kildaire Rotary at Dorcas

Whoever said that volunteering wasn’t fun sure has something wrong with them!  Not that I have ever heard anyone say that, but I think one of the best things you can do with your time is to volunteer and help out others in your community.  The Cary-Kildiare Rotary Club did JUST THAT yesterday afternoon.  We spent 4 hours over at Dorcas Shop in Cary volunteering in all kinds of jobs!   We had about 8 club members and friends come to Dorcas in Cary to help with drop-off, store clean-up, working the jewelry counter, helping customers and lots more!   Our club toured Dorcas a few years ago and we are big fans of their mission and the people they help serve.

My favorite find!

My favorite find!

I had a blast working the jewelry counter, and let me just say, I sold a good amount of jewelry and other valuables!  Most of the guys in our group were helping customers as they came by with donations and some even worked in the sorting bins.  Dorcas has a huge ministry going on in Cary and their volunteers are very dedicated and passionate people!   I had a few minutes to also look through the store for some personal treasures and my favorite find of the day was a BRIGHT YELLOW crinkly crinolyn tutu!   It’s a perfect match with my navy blue and yellow Rotary shirt too!   We also found a white one for my friend Lisa-Gray.  I’m so blessed to be able to work at Smith & Smith, CPA and to be able to have the volunteer hours built into my work schedule.  Have a wonderful and SAFE Memorial Day weekend!

Welcome to New Bern, NC!

Rotary Visit to New Bern, NC

Rotary Visit to New Bern, NC

Earlier this week on Tuesday, I had the pleasure of driving down to New Bern, North CarolinaNew Bern is about a 2 hour and 15 minute drive from Cary and there are several different ways to go, but I went through Kinston, NC and several other small towns, a part of North Carolina that I haven’t been through in a long, long, long time!  The day was nice though and I enjoyed the drive.  I was meeting with several other Rotarians from District 7710 as we had a site-visit for the day to make some plans for our District Conference.  The Rotary District 7710 Conference will be held in late April 2015 and New Bern is the PLACE, and I’m very pleased to be helping on the Planning Committee!  I used to go to New Bern during my high school and college years when I lived in Grenville.  I would often head to the beach for the day at Morehead City and Emerald Isle and New Bern was on the way.  I met up with the other Rotarians at the New Bern- Craven County Convention & Visitors Center, the place where the entire conference will be held.  It’s a beautiful spot, located right on the waterway in New Bern.

Happy 147th Birthday Pepsi!!

Happy 147th Birthday Pepsi!!

We walked down to the waterway outside of the convention center where there is a local park and discussed our plans to use Chinese lanterns and wreaths to honor passed Rotarians during the Memorial Service (it is going to be really nice!)   We also took a short drive to the downtown area and visited the Pepsi Store and guess what!?!?! May 27th just so happened to be the 147th Birthday of Pepsi!  So there was free Pepsi, birthday cake and lots of celebration going on!  New Bern is the birthplace of Pepsi and was invited by Caleb Bradham in his pharmacy in 1898.  We are hoping to incorporate some “Pepsi” theme into the Rotary Conference in April 2015.  We then took time to shoot a few cool video clips of us around town, exploring and enjoying New Bern, we talked to some locals and even had a few ‘celebrity guests‘ appearances in the videos!  Around 1pm we headed to Rotary Club of New Bern to attend their weekly meeting.  They were a very nice club and greeted us with warmth and smiles.

Rotary Club Presidents

Rotary Club Presidents

Their program was on the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child Shoebox, something that my family personally does every year during the holidays, so I really enjoyed their program!  Their Club President is Sandra McKinney and I enjoyed meeting her and talking with her after the meeting. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting several Rotary clubs during the past year and I continue to be amazed about the number of women Rotary Club Presidents!!!!  We finished our Rotary business and were headed back home by 3pm.  I really enjoyed the day and learned so much!  Looking forward to more to come in New Bern!  It was a hot day, so thank you to Lois Cozart at My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in the long maxi dress, it was so comfortable for the whole day and the BRIGHT colors drew lots of compliments!  Shop at My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary and downtown Apex for a great selection of summer styles (both casual and professional).  Tell them Becca sent you and get 10% off your total purchase!
