Candles, Coolers and Chairs…Oh My!

As the weather outside gets warmer (today is a PERFECT example…it is a beautiful 82 degrees and NO humidity), we start thinking about summertime and summer smells…actually we are daydreaming about it because we’ve been in this office everyday since the end of January!!  Deep breath…only 2 weeks left till April 15th!

One of our clients, WickChick, recently released her Spring Time Scent Line and it is awesome!  Owner of WickChick, Heidi Harris, brought my order of the homemade soy candles by on Monday and they are AWESOME!  My personal favorite is the Coconut Lime…I have it just sitting open on my desk (not burning) and it smells like summertime!  The other summer scents include: Clean Cotton, Spring Breeze, Honeysuckle, Caribbean Teakwood and Raspberry Sangria.  The candles are $12.50/each or you can get all SIX of the Spring Scents for $60 (that is what I did!)  You can place your order with Heidi at orders@wickchicknc.com  Tell her you read about her candles on Beccasblog.com!

Auction Item Package for RSA

Auction Item Package for RSA

I also put together a silent auction item for one of our clients, Lizette Watko.  Lizette is helping with the RSA (Raleigh Swimming Association) Legacy Auction and asked her favorite CPA firm (Smith & Smith, CPA) to consider donating an auction item.  The auction is online (has some great items!) and they are hoping to raise $15,000 towards their new Aquatic Facility.  We are happy to donate two Smith & Smith, CPA tailgate chairs, a matching convertible cooler that is full of snacks and goodies from Trader Joes.  You can check out the online auction items HERE and start bidding!

Tax season is in full swing and winding down very soon!  We are accepting new clients however at this time we are not able to guarantee filing by April 15th for tax returns that are being brought in this late in the game…(timeline is tight!)  We are working around the clock to get everyone taken care of and we appreciate your patience! Thank you so much!  We love working with all of our clients and we appreciate your business!  Thank you for referring to Smith & Smith, CPA!

A Barbeque Break from all the Taxes!!!!

Last night our office had a chance to take a nice break from taxes and go try a local new restaurant.

Great dinner at City BBQ with friends!

Great dinner at City BBQ with friends!

The place is called City Barbeque and we’ve been watching it being built for months now, we happen to drive right past it each morning to work.  City Barbeque offers high-quality meats that are slow smoked over aged hickory wood (their smokers are on sight and you can see them from the outside of the restaurant).  We were invited to attend the City Barbeque Exclusive Pre-Opening Event and made our reservations a few weeks ago to attend on Tuesday night.  We had invited all of the families from our office to go along too plus a few other close friends.

Yummy food!!!!

Yummy food!!!!

City Barbeque recently joined the Cary Chamber of Commerce (what a SMART business decision) and we saw several other Chamber members there for dinner last night too.  They will have their ribbon cutting next week and the Cary Chamber will be there to help celebrate with Chamber staff and Ambassadors.  City Barbeque has a very nice large open patio that offers covered seating and picnic style seating with large umbrellas (perfect for warmer weather days!)  We really enjoyed the food as you can tell from the pictures; there was PLENTY to share!  We had pulled pork platters, BBQ sandwiches, fried pickles, cheese fries, salads, vegetables, chicken, and best of all chocolate cake, banana pudding and peach cobbler!  The staff were very nice, attentive to our needs, checked on us often, made sure we had all that we needed and were very helpful with packing up our leftovers to take home.

The inside is very welcoming and has tables that can be pulled together for larger groups…we seem to ALWAYS have a large group when we go out!  Thanks so much to City Barbeque for having us over for the Exclusive Pre-Opening!  We had a great time and we’ll be back often!  They are going to make a very nice addition to the Cary area restaurant market.  I look forward to seeing City Barbeque at Cary Chamber events too!

Just a few days left to get your 2013 taxes filed (or to get an extension put in).  We’ve had a very busy tax season so far and we anticipate the final days to be very steady and busy.  Thank you to all of our clients for their continued support and referrals.  We’ve enjoyed working with all of you and we appreciate your business!

A Time to Celebrate a Job Well Done!

Smith & Smith, CPA at Angus Barn

Smith & Smith, CPA at Angus Barn

Well…that special day of April 15th has now come and gone!  2013 Tax Returns and Extensions have been filed and the hours are completed…but is all the work done and the party over!?! NO WAY! We have still have lots to get completed, but that will all get done soon enough.  Thanks so much to all of our clients for their support and help during the final few days before April 15th.  We were certainly not forgotten as we had lots of sweet treats, gift cards, coffee and Energy Drinks brought in to get us through!  Thanks to everyone!

Dessert anyone?

Dessert anyone?

A few years ago we started celebrating the end of Tax Season with a big office & family Tax Celebration Dinner.  It’s a dinner that we all look forward to and have marked on our calendars as soon as tax season starts!  This year we carried on the tradition by going to The Angus Barn in Raleigh.  We love going there, the whole atmosphere is just wonderful and the food, service and experience is certainly worthy of a celebration!  We’ve been celebrating at the Angus Barn for the past few years and the experience just keeps getting better and better.  Our server last night, Chris, happened to be a long time friend of ours and had worked at Red Lobster in Greenville years ago when Blake and I were working there too.  We always arrive early to enjoy the fresh appetizers and to visit the Wild Turkey Lounge.  Van Eure came by the table to say hello, Van is the current owner of the Angus Barn (her father started it years ago) and was a friend/mentor to me during my years at ECU.

It’s always great to see her and she really knows how to make guests feel welcomed!  After dinner and dessert we stopped by the Angus Barn store to purchase a few favorite gifts and also picked up a gift card for our office postman who will be retiring in a few weeks (Angus Barn is his favorite place too!).   It was a very nice evening and we enjoyed our Tax Celebration dinner and it was nice to have Brooke Smith (Cam’s wife) and John Spey (Alicia’s husband) with us to celebrate too.

Thanks to Lois Cozart, Owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex and downtown Cary for picking the lovely orange and blue strapless dress for me to wear to the Angus Barn.  I’m so honored to wear clothing from My Girlfriend’s Closet and love all that they have to offer both to consigners and shoppers!  Lois and her staff have set-up a very special room in their downtown Apex store that is strictly for prom & formal wear events.  Perfect timing for all of the local high school proms!  They have a large selection of gowns in all sizes and styles…and their prices are great too!  Why pay top dollar for a gown that you will probably only wear onetime anyway when you can get a beautiful gown for a better price at My Girlfriend’s Closet!!?!?!  Tell them you read about My Girlfriend’s Closet in Beccasblog.com and get 10% off your total purchase!

Proud to Support Cary Imps

Check out these new Cary Imps GREEN t-shirts!

Go Cary Imps!

Go Cary Imps!

They just came in last week and GUESS WHAT!?!?  Smith & Smith, CPA is on the of the sponsors on the back of the shirts!   We were contacted in the Fall of 2013 about being a supporter of Cary High School and were asked to sponsor the Cary Imps t-shirts.  Sharon Smith, who works for Smith & Smith, CPA, used to teach at Cary High School and Alicia Angell, one of our CPA’s at Smith & Smith, CPA has children that currently attend Cary High.  Plus we have cousins who are now in college who also went to Cary High (and were active in athletics there too). This was a great opportunity for us and a fun way to show support for a local high school in Cary that is just a few minutes down the street from our office.

The shirts are going to be distributed by the Cary Imps cheerleaders at all of the football games and other sporting events this year.  We are looking forward to seeing these shirts being worn around town.  All of our office staff received a t-shirt too.  Go Cary Imps!

Trading Rotary Flags and More!

President Mohammed and President Becca

President Mohammed and President Becca

Last night at with Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club was a very special event for me!  As Club President, I was invited to exchange Rotary Club flags with Mohammed Islam, President of the Rotary Club of Dhaka Lalmatia (RI District 3281).  Mohammed is from Bangladesh and is visiting in the USA for a month with his family.  He emailed me a few weeks ago and our club was very happy to be his FIRST Rotary Club visit in the United States.  Mohammed brought a very nice Rotary Plaque for me all the way from his Rotary Club and presented it to me as a gift of goodwill from his club.  He also shared with Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club about the Dhaka Lalmatia Rotary Club…and it turns out that our clubs have some very similar interests and passions.  Mohammed’s club is very supportive of water & sanitation so we were happy to tell him about the GlobalRun4Water event that we host in September.

His club is also very supportive of student scholarships, just like Cary-Kildaire.  Mohammed stayed after the meeting and visited with several club members.  We traded club flags during the meeting (SO COOL!!!) and we gave him several items to take back to his home club (our new yellow Frisbee, END POLIO NOW magnet, Rotary ink pin, etc.)  Thanks so much to Mohammed for emailing me about visiting our club.  We enjoyed meeting you and learning all about your club and your travels.  Please come back to visit before you return home!  And thanks as always to My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary & downtown Apex for dressing me in the stylish Aztec spring tunicMy Girlfriend’s Closet is my one of my favorite places to shop!  Mention Beccasblog.com and get 10% off your total purchase and tell them Becca sent you there to shop!

Shopping Local and Supporting Local!

ShopLocalRaleigh Final Friday Social

ShopLocalRaleigh Final Friday Social

Last Friday I attended the ShopLocalRaleigh Final Friday Social that was hosted in downtown Raleigh at a children’s boutique store called Nuvonivo.  I LOVE the Final Friday Socials and always enjoy meeting other members of ShopLocalRaleigh and getting to visit their stores.  A son and mother team owns the store and they were so nice and very gracious to be able to host for the month of April.

They are doing a clothing drive for the nonprofit group, Note in the Pocket and were collecting gently used children’s garments in exchange for NuvoBUCKS!!!  If you donated 1 jacket or 3 garments you were eligible to receive a $5 voucher (up to a $25 limit).  Well, with 2 boys at home, I ALWAYS have coats & jackets that are ready to be passed on to other kids, so I took two huge bags of clothing for the donation drive.  I also LOVE Note in the Pocket, I met them a few years ago at the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch and have been involved with them through my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club too.

Their Executive Director, Dallas, was at the Final Friday Social and shared their mission along with some of their upcoming events (Socks & Undie 5kRundie on Saturday May 10th).  The clothing drive is going to last until May 10th, make your donations at their store location (111 E. Hargett Street Raleigh NC).  I had a great time at the social and was happy to have my friend, Tia Coppus, of Bank of NC there for her first time with ShopLocalRaleigh.  After the social, I used my nuvoBUCKS to get a baby present for a family member, what a great store!  I am already looking forward to the ShopLocalRaleigh Final Friday Social at the end of May! ShopLocalRaleigh was also hosting a MAJOR event on Saturday…Brewgaloo (a local beer fest in downtown Raleigh that features local breweries and local food vendors/food trucks).  With the weather as nice as it was over the weekend…I am SURE Brewgaloo was a huge success!

After the social, Tia and I went over to the Southern Women’s Show at the NC State Fairgrounds.  I went to the show last year with Kim Davis and had a great time seeing friends and a few clients from Smith & Smith, CPA (The Cookie People had a VERY yummy display!)  The Southern Women’s Show comes once a year to this area and it’s a fun time with lots going on!  I made a few fun purchases and always enjoy seeing what’s ‘new’ on the market.  The event was FULL and lasted all weekend, so I am sure it was just as busy on Saturday and Sunday!

Home Tour & Celebration Party

Completed Habitat Home in Apex, NC

Completed Habitat Home in Apex, NC

On Sunday I had the pleasure of attending an event called “Passport to Habitat”…in support of Habitat for Humanity of Wake County.  This was the second year in a row for this event, which features a Home Tour & Celebration Party at the Habitat ReStore in Cary, NC.  Guests arrived around 5:00 PM and were shuttled on charter buses to recent Habitat Homes in Western Wake County.  The homes were located in White Oak Villas neighborhood in Apex, NC, very close to downtown Apex.  There are 16 Habitat Homes in this community and they were all recently completed in March 2014.

I was so humbled during the bus tour as I had helped build these houses back in June 2013 with my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club and the Boys & Girls Home of NC. I had no idea that I’d ever be able to go back to this site and let alone see the completed house AND meet the homeowner and family!   It really did bring the whole experience full-circle for me.  When I helped build the home in 2013 we were working on the support beams, windows and roofing.  To see the home completely done and a very gracious family living inside was just a very joyful feeling.  After touring the homes and meeting the families, we took the bus back to the Cary ReStore and had a celebration party with food from local Cary restaurants.  One of the Habitat homeowners also spoke during the event and shared her life story of going from taking care of her sick mother to quickly finding herself homeless due to a home foreclosure, finding out about Habitat, applying for a home, being accepted in the program, helping build her own house and eventually moving in and becoming a homeowner…something she thought was only a dream.  A few facts about Habitat for Humanity of Wake County…since 1985 they have helped 450 families build and buy safe, affordable homes, including 50 homes in Cary, 10 in Fuquay-Varina, 4 in Morrisville and 16 in Apex.

Visiting the Habitat Homes on the Passport Tour

Visiting the Habitat Homes on the Passport Tour

Habitat for Humanity of Wake County is very thankful to have more than 8,000 donors and volunteers giving their funds, time and energy to help build homes each year in our area.  My passion and love for helping with Habitat was born years ago as a young adult in youth group, I can still remember my first build with my dad in Greenville, NC.  Over the years I’ve been able to continue helping with Habitat through Rotary and other service clubs. I’ve also done some of the home demolition with Habitat.  Thanks to the Habitat Event Committee for putting on an event that not only brings awareness about the need for affordable housing in our area, but also celebrates the success of the work done and the families helped!     FYI…I found my cute Kate Spade top at My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary!  They also have a store in downtown Apex…best place to shop for ladies consignment...tell them you read Beccasblog.com and get 10% off your purchase!
