Beginning to Look a lot like Christmas!

Smith & Smith, CPA Christmas Tree 2013

Smith & Smith, CPA Christmas Tree 2013

So December is here!  No, I’m not joking, it’s for REAL!  The LAST MONTH of 2013 has arrived!  Ready or not…it’s here!  I spent today getting our office all sparkly clean (ever heard of Winter-Cleaning…very similar to Spring-Cleaning!) and I also pulled the December holiday decorations out of storage and got them all put up.  Our office is looking right on track ready for Christmas!  I put up two small trees in the front foyer, along with a few fun items and best of all…a Christmas candy basket (full of chocolate goodies!)  I also hung our outdoor wreath outside on the mailbox…it was looking a little ‘worn out’, so I went to Michael’s to get a few new wreath accessories and a new bow.  It looks much better and full of life once again!  Smith & Smith, CPA is also participating the ShopLocalRaleigh “Where is Sir Walter?Holiday Shopping Contest!  This is an Instagram Contest that includes great prizes and a chance to win a customized scooter!

Can you find Sir Walter?

And the Winner This Year is…

Ugliest Dog Award Winners

Ugliest Dog Award Winners

So let me fill you in on a little “Smith Family” tradition…now, it is not your typical tradition by any means. Oh no, this is something that was started WAY BACK in 2008 through a conversation.  So the story goes like this…it was Thanksgiving 2008 and Bob & Sharon were celebrating the holiday with some of Sharon’s extended family.  Her aunt, Betty Joe, was talking with Bob about the World’s Ugliest Dog competition and how ugly the winning dog looked.  This sparked Bob’s interest, so he looked up the dog and printed off a picture (his name was Sam, a Chinese Crested Dog).  Well, Cam and Blake got a hold of the picture and framed it for Bob that year at Christmas.

And there it began…the following year in 2009, Bob gave the framed picture to his brother Jack. Then in 2010 Jack gave the picture to his nephew, Michael Trent, for passing the Bar Exam.  From that year on, the Ugliest Dog Award was passed to a family member for ‘accomplishing something’.  So in 2011 Michael passed the award to his cousin, Blake, for passing the CPA Exam (YEA!!!!).  In 2012 Blake passed the award to his aunt & uncle, Ted & Bonnie, for being “empty nesters” with both of their kids grown and out of the house.  This year, in 2013, Ted & Bonnie passed the award to Sharon for being the “First in their generation to retire”.  They have added a list to the back of the frame to keep up with who got the award and when.  Now, what do you have to do with the award??? You have to display it, in FULL VIEW, for one year in your office.  Trust me, it sparks LOTS of conversations and leads to many a good laugh! Wonder who will be the LUCKY WINNER of the Ugliest Dog Award next year?

Here They Come…2013 Tax Changes & Updates

Blake, Alicia and Bob ready to learn more about the 2013 Tax Changes

Blake, Alicia and Bob ready to learn more about the 2013 Tax Changes

So it is that time of the year again…yea, you know…time to start thinking about your taxes for 2013!  What?? Did you think I was going to say something else?  No, seriously, the phones at Smith & Smith, CPA have been steadily ringing as clients are calling with questions about 2013 tax changes, updates, forms and many more things!  It’s crazy!  But we are here to help and are glad to do so.   Next week Bob, Blake and Alicia will be out of the office in Continuing Education Classes.  These classes are a requirement for their CPA license each year, but they also gain valuable information about the 2013 tax changes to the State and Federal tax codes.  Good stuff, right?

They are coming! Are you READY?

They are coming! Are you READY?

And you can be sure that there will be some discussion about all of the healthcare changes too!  One question that we get a lot at this time of year is “What can I do now to help be prepared for my 2013 taxes?”  The best answer is this, Plan ahead and Be Prepared.  That simply means: keep your items from your employer and anything you get in the mail organized and in one place.  Lots of people make donations during this time of year to their favorite charity/nonprofit group (good for you!!!), so be sure you keep those records around too as you will need them.  You can also find more information about the 2013 Tax Changes for Individuals and Businesses up on our website under the Newsletter section.   Feel free to share and we are here to help should you have any questions!

NOW…all together…HAPPY WEEKEND!!!!!!

Celebrations of the Season!

Becca, Juliet and Andy bell ringing

Becca, Juliet and Andy bell ringing

Something very odd and unusual happened last Friday…it was a very warm 78-degrees!!!  And it also happened to be the day that I had signed up to work a 2-hour shift ringing the Salvation Army Bell for the Red Kettle project.  I do this every year on behalf of my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club.  It’s something that I look forward to each year and just find so much joy in giving back.  I rang this year with my good friend and fellow Rotarian, Andy Wright. Thanks to my sweet friend, Dr. Heather Sefried, owner of Nirvelli Day Spa and Preston Chiropractic, for stopping by to say hello and her sweet daughter, Juliet, got in the picture with us.

Now believe it or not…I have NEVER seen the movie, The Christmas Story.  I know, it’s crazy right?  I know about the movie, I know lots of people who love it and watch it every year religiously at Christmas time, but somehow I’ve managed to miss the whole thing when it comes on TV.  However, this past Sunday I had the pleasure of seeing The Christmas Story performed LIVE and ON STAGE in downtown Cary at the Cary Cultural Arts Center.  I went with my friend (and Smith & Smith, CPA client), Lisa Cotter, owner of DoctorsExpress in Cary.  We were there to support our friend, Sharon Galluzzo who was plying the part of Miss Shields.  Sharon was fantastic, the play was great and we had a blast! And now I’m a FAN of The Christmas Story!

MomSquad Cookie Bake

MomSquad Cookie Bake

Last night I hosted my FIRST ever Cookie Bake & Decorate Party!  I invited several of the kids in Mark’s preschool class over to our house for dinner and decorating.  It was so fun! I picked up a delicious chicken nugget tray from Chick-fil-a Waverly Place in Cary (soooooo good and everyone loves there food, also so great for parties like this) and all of the moms brought a dish to share.  After dinner we gathered in the dining room to decorate tons and tons of sugar cookies.  There was lots of laughter, plus tons of sprinkles, glitter icing, mini M&M’s all flying around the room.  We made tons of cookies to share with others during the holidays…but best of all…we made holiday memories with our kids.  Thanks to everyone in the “MomSquad” for coming over.  So much going on this time of the year, I hope you have time to make memories with your family.

ShopLocalRaleigh Contest for a Moped!

Kate of Frill won!

Kate of Frill won!

Last Tuesday was a really fun event for ShopLocalRaleigh.  They hosted their #WheresWalter Instagram party at Lucky B’s in downtown Raleigh.  This contest had been going on since mid-November and it included finding a Christmas-themed Sir Walter cut-out that was hidden all over Wake County in many ShopLocalRaleigh member stores & offices.  We even had one in our Smith & Smith, CPA office.  The party at Lucky B’s included food & drinks, plus a ton of door prizes and the grand prize…a customized ShopLocalRaleigh moped!!!  I was able to get 5 entries for the contest from tagging Sir Walter around the area, but atlas…it wasn’t enough!

One of our clients, Kate Steadman, Owner & Lead Designer at Frill (a custom clothing company with charity in mind) ended up being the grand prize winner and took the ShopLocalRaleigh moped home!  Congrats Kate!  She was really excited and had over 35 entries in the contest!  I had a fun time at the party and enjoyed meeting some new ShopLocalRaleigh members and friends.   I had a chance to go by Peachy Keen and Joint Venture Jewelry during the contest and get a picture for the contest of Sir Walter there.  Jen Hankin, Director of Communications at Peachy Keen and Joint Venture Jewelry also came to the party at Lucky B’s.  Thanks to Jennifer Martin, Executive Director at ShopLocalRaleigh for all of her hard work and hours on the contest, prizes and social.  It was fun, like all ShopLocalRaleigh events, and I look forward to the next one!  Thanks also to My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary and downtown Apex for this fabulous purple Kate Spade coat!  It’s in super great condition and is ready for a new owner!  Contact My Girlfriend’s Closet about making this coat YOURS!  It sure would make a fantastic Christmas present for someone…maybe you????

WBON ladies

WBON of Cary had their December meeting last week at Prestonwood Country Club.  This is the last WBON meeting for the 2013 year.  There was lots of holiday spirit at the meeting and we played a fun mixer game before the meeting that qualified you for the door prizes.  Congrats to WBON sponsor and Smith & Smith, CPA client, Christine Hall, owner of CMH College Consulting for her business success.  So far all of her students who have applied for colleges have heard back with positive news and her student clients are also really starting to rack in the scholarship money!!!  That is excellent!  Great work Christine!  Thanks to Lois Cozart, owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet for this lovely black & white Elie Tahari dress.  Right off the rack at their downtown Cary store!  Great place to shop for holiday gifts!

Holiday Cheer for All!

Kevin & Shelli Christmas Party 2013

Kevin & Shelli Christmas Party 2013

Last night Blake and I attended a really fun Christmas Party at the lovely Matthews House in downtown Cary.  The party was hosted by Kevin and Shelli Dallacqua.   Shelli is the Founder & President of Shelten Media, a full-service social media marketing company.  Kevin is the owner of a local car & auto body shop.  I met Shelli a few years ago through the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch and we’ve been friends ever since.  This was the first year for this Christmas party and we loved being included.

Funny Christmas photo fun

Shelli had lots of fun things going on in the room, from a 50/50 raffle (winner got half the money that ended up being $185!!) plus raffle tickets for over 15 auction items!  There was a full buffet for a sit-down dinner, plus a fun area of crazy Christmas/holiday photo props.  I had some fun picture taken with my friend Tammy Cordes and her hubby, Craig.  Blake and I bought several raffle tickets but ended the night not being a lucky winner, which we were okay with…but I really wanted those earrings that were donated by Kim Oestereich Smith & Smith, CPA donated one of our tailgate chairs and coolers.  There was even a 5 day cruise on the raffle table!  Our friend Suzy Saver and her hubby won the cruise!

Fun with friends

It was fun to see so many wonderful friends, networking partners, business leaders and community supporters all together!  Shelli and Kevin were very gracious hosts and took time to greet everyone and kept the party moving.  Beth Wood, NC State Auditor, gave the invocation before dinner.  The food was really delicious, the Matthews House has a fabulous chef!!!  There was a huge dessert buffet and also a wine bar.  After dinner, Shelli introduced all of her staff and interns.

She then took time to share her story of going to NCSU as a non-traditional student, being selected for an internship at Oxford, winning scholarships to attend, becoming introduced & exposed to social media while in Europe, coming back to USA and traveling across country working on a projects, and best of all, she shared about the encouragement and support she got along the way from one of her college professors.  She ended up giving him an award titled the “Shelten Media #WorldChanger Award”.   Our friends Heather and Dave Sefried ended up winning the 50/50 raffle at the end of the night (yea!!!).

The best part of the whole evening was the military family that was selected and being showered with Christmas presents that were brought by all of the guests.  Shelli had found this family through our friend Kathleen Volandt, President of Auroros. That was such a special part of the party to see all of the presents around the Christmas tree.  Shelli and Kevin gave each attendee two bottles of wine at the end of the night that had custom labels on them from Chatham Hill Winery.  Thanks again to Shelli and Kevin for being such gracious hosts and kind friends to all of us.  We enjoyed the night so much!  Thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriends Closet for the beautiful black cocktail dress that I wore for the evening.  My Girlfriend’s Closet has a great selection of Holiday cocktail dresses and beautiful accessories!  Stop by there to shop and tell them that you read Beccasblog.com and get a 10% off discount on your next purchase.

Expert Advice from Your Local CPA

Hello!  Well, I took a little break there from blogging for a few days, okay, actually it was more like 11 days, but who is counting right?  I hope you have enjoyed the holiday break and that all is well with your family!  We sure did have a nice time around our house and enjoyed seeing lots of family, friends and spending some good quality time together.

So I have a question for you…did you see it?  You did right?  I mean, you know what I am talking about?  I know you saw it…you MUST HAVE!  I hope you are not asking yourself “What in the world is she talking about!?!?!”  Well, let me fill you in…Blake was featured in the News & Observer (in Raleigh and also in Charlotte) in the “ASK THE EXPERTS” section on Tuesday, December 24th.  So I  KNOW you saw his picture and expert advice to small business owners in the paper!  He was featured in the ShopTalk section of the paper that comes out every week on Tuesday.  Blake was asked to give advice to small business owners for things they could do in 2014.  His advice included centralizing your expenses and checking your bottom line to stay on top of your finances in 2014.  It was a great article and highlighted 3 simple things that small business owners can do that will make a BIG difference for them in 2014. Here is the link to the article, hope you will read it!  Thanks to Virginia Bridges of the N&O for working with Blake on this article.
