How to make a Spooky Day VERY Sweet!

Life Experiences & Cary-Kildaire Rotary Halloween 2013

Life Experiences & Cary-Kildaire Rotary Halloween 2013

So yesterday was October 31st, also known as Halloween.  Now, I know that there are many different ways to celebrate Halloween, and I also know that there are many people who don’t celebrate Halloween at all. I’m fine with either way, I’m gonna share with you how we (Smith & Smith, CPA & family) spent our last day of October 31st 2013.  The day started around 1pm with the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club 2nd Annual Indoor Trick-or-Treat community project at Life Experiences.

Tia, Patrick and Elizabeth

Tia, Patrick and Elizabeth

We did this last year for the first time and just had a total blast, so as Club Prez, it was MUST DO again for me this year!  We gathered for lunch at 1pm (no evening meeting at MacGregor Downs) and had a delicious lunch that was provided by the Bakery Department at Life Experiences (sandwiches, chips, pickles and those AMAZING brownies).  The day was a beautiful, so some members ate outside on the patio that our club built years ago.  After lunch, we moved outside for the Halloween Costume Parade!  It was so heart-warming to see of them the Life Experiences clients pass by and we cheered so loud for them!

They looked great!  Right after the parade we had 5 Trick-or-Treat ‘stations’ set-up for them to come by in groups and collect candy & goodies.  I’d like to thank my three sweet friends for joining me, Tia Coppus (Bank of NC), Jessica Register (Union Bank), and Lisa-Gray Vick (Safe Child).  I loved having them there with me and appreciate you all coming dressed in fun costumes!  After this event, Jessica, Lisa-Gray and I headed back to Smith & Smith, CPA to get ready for the Executive Park Learning Center Annual Halloween Parade down Executive Circle.  We’ve been a part of this parade ever since our kids were little and stared attending Executive Park Learning Center.  We take a table over across the street and hand out goodies to the kiddos as they come by.  So sweet to see them all dressed-up!  Thanks to Jessica for coming too with little goodie bags and flyers for Union Bank!  I love getting other local businesses involved in fun (and easy/creative) marketing opportunities like this!

Sharon, Blake & Bob helping with the EPLC parade

Sharon, Blake & Bob helping with the EPLC parade

Everyone from the office came over to see the kids and take pictures/admire their costumes.  We only have a few years left before Mark goes off to kindergarten…but I have a feeling we’ll always participate in giving treats to the kids. This year I skipped on giving candy and had collected lots of cute little Halloween trinkets, like bouncy balls, spider rings, little notepads, pencils and stickers.  We also gave our our Smith & Smith, CPA rulers.  Last year I ordered a large supply of Halloween trick-or-treat bags with Safety Tips on one side and our firm logo on the other side.  I used those bags several times this week: for the EPLC parade, event at Life Experiences, Trent’s kindergarten class and Cam took some for Connor’s preschool class too!  Hopefully you saw some Smith & Smith, CPA trick-or-treat bags around town last night!

Smith Family Halloween 2013

Smith Family Halloween 2013

And finally we ended the day with a Trick-or-Treat party/cookout over at Bob & Sharon’s house in their Lochmere cul-de-sac.  It was a perfect night for a fire in the fire pits and hotdogs, chili and other snacks.  Lots of family came over and all of the kiddos had fun trick-or-treating together.  Blake and I dressed-up like a chef (quick chef hat made with paper, tape and scissors) and a nice witch ($10 outfit from Rite Aide), Cam and Brooke dressed-up like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and then of course all of the kids were in costume.

Alicia's mom and Ava

Alicia’s mom and Ava

Alicia and her mom dressed up and took her youngest daughter, Ava, trick-or-treating in their Cary neighborhood.  I love Alicia’s mom’s costume!!!  Alicia’s other two girls are older and not really the ‘age’ to go around collecting candy anymore.  Ava is a frequent visitor to our CPA firm, we love having a kid-friendly office!  Stop by at anytime and you are bound to see a few kids here.  That’s the best part of working at a family business!  So all in all, it was a very SWEET day spent with SWEET people…and not too SPOOKY at all!

Jackpot, Friends and MORE!

Alicia working the Smith & Smith, CPA booth

Alicia working the Smith & Smith, CPA booth

Yesterday was a very LONG but also surprisingly FAST day!  Now, that doesn’t really make sense, I know, but I’m going to tell you why yesterday was like that.  Yesterday was the Cary Chamber of Commerce Business Expo 2013.  The event was held over at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary and was SOLD OUT with 86 different exhibitors.  You HAVE to be a Cary Chamber Member to participate in the expo, but NOT to attend.  The event was open to the public and had been advertised in local papers, mailings, emails, social media, magazines, news channels and radio stations.

Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club

Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club

The Cary Chamber had also asked all of the exhibitors to share the word of the event through their networks & contacts.  So the word was out there!  I was involved with the planning and prep for three different booths, so I had to make sure I was very organized and set with all materials.  WHEW!  Lots of work, but also lots of fun!  I was helping with the WBON of Cary, Cary-Kildaire Rotary and best of all, Smith & Smith, CPA.  I went on Tuesday afternoon to start getting set-up with all the materials during the early-set-up hours.

WBON of Cary had ladies signed-up to work different shifts all day long and they were busy promoting the mystery dinner theater fundraiser called “Killing for the Crown” that will be in two weeks on November 20th.  I’m playing the part of Miss Texas!  My Tennessee Southern Accent will be VERY helpful!  The Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club booth (our 3rd year as a vendor!!!) was also fully staffed by club members working 2-hour shifts.  We had a spinning wheel at our booth that helped us to ENGAGE people as they walked by and test their knowledge about global issues.  Our Club Fall Open House is next week, Thursday, November 14th, so we were really trying to reach out to people about attending and finding out more about Rotary.  Alicia came to the expo with me yesterday and helped work our Smith & Smith, CPA booth. Thanks so much Alicia!!!

Howard hoping for a WIN!

Howard hoping for a WIN!

I was at Preston at 8 am to attend the breakfast and hear Economist Ted Abernathy speak.  He’s always a great speaker and shares lot of interesting facts and figures about the economy.  The expo officially opened at 9am and went all the way to 5 pm.  So while the hours for the expo were LONG, it did seem to pass by really fast.  It was fun to see lots of friends and clients come by our booth to say hello.  We had borrowed a FULL SIZE jackpot Vegas style slot machine from our good friend and referral partner, Beth Donner.

Richard Crews won a COOLER!

Richard Crews won a COOLER!

Beth is part of the team at Adams Financial and after 5-years of me asking her to let us borrow the jackpot machine, she FINALLY said YES!  Thanks Beth!  It was a huge hit at our booth and drew in a crowd to play!  We invited people to play by giving us a business card or they could make a donation to the Food Bank of North Carolina.  We ended-up with a basket full of business cards and about $15 in our jar for the Food Bank, Alicia and I will take care of getting that donation turned in.  We didn’t have any BIG winners during the day, but we did have lots of small winners!  Howard Johnson, President of the Cary Chamber of Commerce even took a lucky play on the slot machine…I can’t tell you if he was a winner though…you will have to ask him!  Thanks for stopping by Howard!

Post-Expo party in the lobby!

Post-Expo party in the lobby!

We gave away a Smith & Smith, CPA Tailgate Chair and Cooler at the end of the expo, congrats to the winners:  Richard Crews from the Capital Area Workforce Center (cooler) and Renee Jinkins at Cambria Suites (chair). Richard came by the booth to pick up his cooler and of course…I had to have a picture for Becca’s Blog!  At the end of the Expo, I got to announce the name of the Expo GRAND PRIZE winner…a $500 Shopping Visa to Cary Towne Center….the winner was Mike Rivera from SigNet Technologies.  Congrats Mike!  After the expo was over and we had finished packing up…I enjoyed lots of laughs and some ‘off-my-feet-time” with several of my Chamber girlfriends.  That was fun ladies!  Thanks to the Cary Chamber for ANOTHER very successful and FUN Business Expo!  CARY ON!  Thanks also to My Girlfriend’s Closet for the pink necklace and earrings!  Really looked nice with my black Smith & Smith, CPA dress!

Congrats to MGC and CFF of the Triangle

Bethany, Becca and Lois

Bethany, Becca and Lois

Ahhhh…HELLO FRIDAY!  It’s cold outside, but I like it!  And the weekend is gonna be GREAT!  Whoo-hoo!  I’m a bit behind with some blogs, so I’m hoping to get caught up next week.  Yesterday was a very busy Thursday.  Blake and I went to the My Girlfriend’s Closet Boutique EXPANSION Grand Opening Party yesterday after work at 5pm in downtown Apex.  They recently added a HUGE addition to the back of the boutique and it is just perfect!   The space really opens up and add lots of room for some MORE IMPORTANT accessories…SHOES!!!!  I told Blake that was what I wanted for Christmas!  Sorry to say though…it’s not looking to good for me, but a girl can dream right???

A girl can dream!

A girl can dream!

I adore Lois, Ashley and Bethany, plus the rest of the MGC staff at BOTH stores!  They really care about helping women LOOK and FEEL good, not just about selling clothes and stuff in the store.  I’ve had a wonderful marketing relationship with MGC over the past year and I love being part of the MGC family.  The Apex Chamber of Commerce was there at the Expansion Party and did a very nice Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.  Congrats to Lois and all of MGC for being a huge part of retail in both downtown Apex and downtown Cary.  My Karen Kane top came from the store and was a perfect fit for a busy day!  Check out Bethany dressing her baby-bump super cute too!  Looking good, not much longer before her baby arrives!

CFF with Bank of NC

CFF with Bank of NC

After the MGC ribbon cutting, Blake and I headed over to the UNC Morehead Planetarium and Science Center in Chapel Hill for a fundraising event called Top of the Triangle, honoring the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of the Triangle.  Tia Coppus from Bank of NC, invited us to be guests and attend the dinner and ceremony program.  Bank of NC was a proud Table Sponsor for this worthy event.  This was our first time to the UNC Planetarium and our first opportunity to support the CFF of the Triangle.  We had a wonderful time, congrats to those who supported the event and we were very touched by the whole evening.  After the program we attended a STAR SHOW in the Planetarium, it was really neat!  Thanks Tia for the invite!  Happy weekend everyone!

The Shepherd’s Table Soup Kitchen

The Next Level BNI

The Next Level BNI

Last week Blake’s BNI Group, The Next Level, joined together for a community service project.  They went to downtown Raleigh to work at The Shepherd’s Table Soup Kitchen.  Now, you might remember them doing this a few months ago and you are correct!  They were down there this summer in early June working as volunteers.  I really commend the work that his BNI group does together, especially in the community.

Blake & Dennis

Blake & Dennis

As a group they decided long ago that they were going to be a group that not only worked together on passing referrals and building their businesses, but also about doing good in the community and serving others.  They went down to the soup kitchen early that morning and helped with the food prep and set-up.  They had six members from their BNI group participate last week.  The Shepherd’s Table Soup Kitchen has the motto of “Serve the Hungry, Feed the Soul”.  They are a human service organization of carrying and loving people and an independent nonprofit 501©3.  They are supported and operated by caring citizens of the greater Raleigh metropolitan area.  The Shepherd’s Table serves a free lunch meal to anyone who walks through our doors – no questions asked. Every person who comes to them is welcomed without regard to employment status, race, sex, age, color, national origin, religious preference, handicap or income.

Time to eat!

Time to eat!

Their offices, kitchen, and dining facilities are located in downtown Raleigh in the basement floor of the Church of the Good Shepherd.  People are invited to visit them on weekdays to observe the impact they have on others in need.  They are always seeking donations of time and financial resources in support of their important community service.  On their website you will find a list of ways to help, whether it be through food donations (non-food items for the kitchen) or food items.

Helping Others

Helping Others

The Shepherd’s Table Soup Kitchen has about 125 volunteers on a weekly basis who come to help serve lunch (along with the set-up and clean-up).  Blake thinks they served an estimated 325 people last week.  Way to go Next Level BNI!  You all are truly making a difference in our community!

Thanksgiving Breakfast and Spaghetti for Lunch!

Dorcas Thanksgiving Breakfast

Dorcas Thanksgiving Breakfast

On Thursday morning I had the pleasure of being a Table Captain for the 2013 Thanksgiving Breakfast for Dorcas Ministries.  I’ve been involved with Dorcas Ministries for many years and I love what they stand for and really admire their mission and work in the Cary area.  As a Table Captain, I was asked to invite 9 other people to join me for the breakfast at Prestonwood Country Club.  I reached to Rotary friends, business referral partners and other networking friends.  I was so proud of my table, everyone I invited showed up and were VERY generous during the YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE part of the program!  Thanks to Tia, Susan, Christy, Tammy, Elizabeth, Kevin, Baxter, Don and Louis for joining me!  Here is a picture of me with Susan and Christy after the breakfast.

Spaghetti for Rotary

Spaghetti for Rotary

Yesterday afternoon Alicia and I went over to the Kirk of Kildaire Presbyterian Church to pick up food from the Cary-Page Rotary Club.  They were hosting their Annual Spaghetti Fundraiser.  This is one of their club’s biggest fundraisers that benefits Read & Feed and many other local non-profits.  Thanks to Cary Page Rotary Club member, Mark Wainwright, for reaching out to me about a Sponsorship from Smith & Smith, CPA.  We were a Bronze Sponsor and received 10 spaghetti meals.  YUMMY!  Cam’s family came in for the spaghetti lunch and we had a great time getting the to-go meals and eating at the office together.

Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary and downtown Apex for dressing me in the lovely gray-sweater dress (don’t you just love that bow!?!?) and the pink vintage jacket, a very Jackie O look to me!  Stop by there to shop, tell them you read Beccasblog.com and get 10% off your purchase!  Happy weekend!

Miss America for TLPL

Becca, Susan and Bridgette at TLPL

Becca, Susan and Bridgette at TLPL

I will always remember Wednesday, November 20th as being a really crazy day!  Not crazy in a bad way, but just crazy in all ways that it could be!  I started the day out with the Cary Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors meeting at 8am and by 8pm I was DEAD…literally, but also came back to life.  So keep reading.  It gets good.  The Triangle Ladies Power Lunch hosted their FINAL luncheon for the 2013 year.  Years ago the TLPL decided that December was just TOO BUSY to try to squeeze in a networking lunch, so in November, we meet, network and call it QUITS for the rest of the year!  I was pleased to have one of our Smith & Smith, CPA clients, Bridgette Bordonaro, Owner of Beautimous Beads, a bead boutique & jewelry store in downtown Cary, with me as my expo guest.

Bridgette of Beautimous Beads in downtown Cary

Bridgette of Beautimous Beads in downtown Cary

I gave Bridgette our Smith & Smith, CPA expo table for her to use for her jewelry and other goodies.  Her items looked so lovely and caught the attention of many ladies as they arrived.  I also had Alicia with me from the office and our dear friend & referral partner, Susan Pruskin.   The speaker was Susan Gravely, Chairman and CEO for Vietri!   If you don’t know Vietri, well…you should!  It is “Irresistibly Italian” Tablewear & Entertaining, Home Décor, Garden, Gifts & Occasions pottery that is ALL hand painted and hand made right from Italy!  Susan shared her story of growing up in a family with many guests from around the world in their home (her father was in tobacco trade) and she started the company with her mom and her sister years ago as a result of trip to Italy.  Her story was so heartwarming and inspiriting!  Several ladies at my table own Vietri pieces and were emotional during her story!  Great way to close out the TLPL year!

Smith & Smith, CPA at Killing for the Crown

Smith & Smith, CPA at Killing for the Crown

Now, about my death…WBON of Cary hosted their FIRST Murder Mystery Dinner Fundraiser last night…Killing for the Crown.  This event was held in lieu of a Silent Auction.  This was a FIRST for many of us and overall, it went really well.  Our theme was the Miss America Pre-Pageant party and all of the Pageant State Representatives had some serious issues (and closet secrets that they didn’t want to have exposed!)  Smith & Smith, CPA was proud to be a Table Sponsor and our whole office went, including Cam’s wife, Brooke and Alicia with her mom, Linda.

Daddy Big Bucks and Miss Tina Texas

Daddy Big Bucks and Miss Tina Texas

The event was held at Bien Venue in Apex (a cool place) and the food was delicious, along with a cash bar and yummy desserts!  Blake played the role of Daddy Big Bucks, a wealthy Oil Tycoon and father to Miss Tina Texas and Miss Natalie New Mexico.  Turns out that I was the role of Miss Tina Texas (who just so happened to be HATED…really envied, by the other State Contestants because I was a “Sure Win, and a “favorite among the judges”).   My good friend, Heather Seifried, was Miss Natalie New Mexico and my half-sister.  Several other WBON ladies had major roles and the night unfolded with me being murdered…with poisonous breath mints…by Miss…well, I hate to give it away, but it was another State Contestant!  Our office had a fun time and Blake played the BEST Daddy Big Bucks ever!   Congrats to WBON of Cary for pulling off this fun and UNIQUE event!  It’s nice to be alive again today…and to be loved.  I’m not so sure I liked playing a character that was hated by many…..Thanks to Lois Cozart, owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary and downtown Apex for dressing me for both events!  The orange dress won lots of comments at the TLPL luncheon!  Shop there and tell them you read Beccasblog.com to get 10% off your purchase!

Mr. Friday…Time Already?

Cup A Joe!

Cup A Joe!

Hello Friday…now let me ask you something Mr. Friday…weren’t you JUST HERE??? Like a week ago?  Seriously…has this week flown by or what?  Just can’t believe it, November, one of my most fave months, has just zipped right by, in the blink of an eye!  So let’s do a Friday Wrap-up, shall we?  So yesterday morning I had a nice cup of coffee at a cool place in Raleigh, it is called A Cup of Joe.  I had a meeting with Dan Rothra and Robert Courts.  I’m in ShopLocalRaleigh with Robert and he is good friends with Dan.  We spent some time talking and tossed some fun ideas about marketing together and some ways to really tag-team on growing this whole “shop local” theme.  I’m really into this.  Thanks Dan and Robert!  Looking forward to what is to come next!

Becca, Dr. Mann and Shirin

Becca, Dr. Mann and Shirin

We had a really awesome Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club meeting last night, lots of energy and some of our guests came back for a second visit from our Open House meeting last week. YEA!  Growing our Rotary Club one new member at a time!  We heard from Dr. Ashley Mann, DDS, a dentist here in Cary.  Dr. Mann shared about a project called Wake Smiles.  Wake Smiles helps to provide dental care to those in our community who can’t afford the cleanings and dental work needed.  Some of his stories were just heart wrenching and moving at the same time.  Wake Smiles has paired with The Salvation Army to provide the FIRST free dental client for adults in downtown Raleighfirst one of its kind with the Salvation Army in the COUNTRY!  We are talking about making history here!  Thank you to Shirin Mashoon, a proud member of Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club for bringing Dr. Mann as a speaker to our club.

Blanket Bundles with Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club

Blanket Bundles with Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club

After the meeting, we spent time packing and wrapping 10 Blanket Bundles.  The Blanket Bundles are a NEW project for our club this year and is our Thanksgiving 2013 project.  A local radio station supports Blanket Bundles and encourages volunteers in the community to use a new blanket and wrap (bundle) it around 20 canned goods/non-perishable items.  Last week we signed-up to bring the various blankets and goods and made a quick assembly line to put the Blanket Bundles together.  Great work Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club!   I’ll be meeting with Susan Pruskin, also a proud member of Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club to deliver the Blanket Bundles on Saturday morning.  They will be used for those in need at the Raleigh Rescue Mission.  Sometimes, the simplest gestures can make the BIGGEST impact in someone’s life.

"Chef" Amy!

“Chef” Amy!

Thank you to our dear friend from PrimePay, Amy Gretenstein for coming by this afternoon with a delicious loaf of homemade pumpkin bread!  This girl is a FANTASTIC cook and is always spoiling us with little goodies during the year!  We shared some good laughs together this afternoon and talked about Thanksgiving travel plans for next week.  Thanks so much Amy!  See you soon!

Naptime Raleigh

Naptime Raleigh

And check this out…my new friend, Heather Petrovich is really freakin’ cool.  She’s known as the Raleigh Realty Mom and is a single mother of twin girls, an avid runner and the host of a parenting podcast called Naptime Radio (seriously, she has listeners ALL over the world…in like 80 different countries!!!!! )  She’s also a blogger too (love a fellow blogger) and she blogs about cool stuff like, real estate, parents and life.  We met a few months ago at the Carolina Parent Expo and then again at a Cary Chamber Eye Opener Breakfast.  We had lunch at one of my fave places in Cary, Serendipity Café (also a client of Smith & Smith, CPA) and the friendship has been fast and fun!  She totally made me feel awesome by posting Beccasblog in her blog!  OMG…a BLOG TAG!  YEA!  Thanks Heather!  Check it out HERE

Helping Out, Even in the Smallest Ways!

Farm Day at Corral

Farm Day at Corral

Our CPA firm participated in the CPA Day of Service a few months ago and had a great time working for ½ the day out at The Corral Riding Academy.  This was Alicia’s first time on the farm and she really liked being at Corral and learning about their mission within the community.  Her middle-daughter, Avery, wanted to learn more about The Corral and was really interested in getting involved too.  So last week, Alicia and her two youngest daughters, along with some neighbors & other people in the community volunteered at Corral for their Farm Day.

Addison painting at The Corral

Avery painting at The Corral

Farm Days are offered as a way for volunteers to help serve at The Corral.  They are held very 6-8 weeks and are posted on the website with a sign-up sheet.  Volunteers get a tour of the farm and work alongside other volunteers on various projects and other overall farm improvements.  I’ve done a few Farm Days myself and they are tons of fun!  Alicia, Avery and Ava helped work on the barns, do pasture maintenance and other small projects.  The day really does go fast when you are there to help with Farm Day, but you feel so awesome at the end of the day and like you really made a difference!   Here are some cute pictures to share of Alicia and her girls working at The Corral.  They picked a perfect November day to work with nice weather and warm temperatures!   What a perfect way to serve your community, by serving others!  Kudos to Alicia and her girls!

Here is another picture to share…Susan Pruskin and I are in the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club together and meet-up on Saturday morning at Cary Towne Mall to drop-off about 10 blanket bundles that our club had collected and wrapped.  This was a very easy project and it was an honor for our club to participate in this worthy project.  The Blanket Bundles were collected by a local radio station and then delivered to The Raleigh Rescue Mission.  It’s Thanksgiving week…what are you thankful for?

Art Ball for Cary Visual Art

Art Ball 2013 with Grace & Jim Wang

Art Ball 2013 with Grace & Jim Wang

Over the weekend Blake and I had the pleasure of attending the Art Ball 2013.  This prestigious event is held at Prestonwood Country Club and supports Cary Visual Art.   Cary Visual Art seeks to ensure that the Arts are ALIVE and well in our community.  My good friend, Grace Li Wang and Gifts with a Heart Gallery, hosted the formal evening event.  Grace is a famous artist and several of her own pieces of work were on display for silent auction.  Another good friend of mine, Claire Smith, had invited us to attend the Art Ball 2013 nearly a year ago; so to say we had been looking forward to this event for a while would be an understatement!  We were greeted with a glass of champagne when w arrived and viewed the art that was on silent auction in Salon C.

Live Art Auction

Live Art Auction

We really liked several of the pieces and enjoyed reading about the artists.  Dinner was served around 7:30pm and Prestonwood had put together a fantastic variety of food stations and an assortment of delicious foods.  There was a live band with music by The John Barker Project and Lisa York hosted the live art auction part.  The event also featured a live painting by artist Dan Nelson. The Art Ball offers a diverse collection of work from artists known across the state and nationally.  The auction featured sculptures, jewelry, pottery, wearable art and a large collection of painting, photography and mixed media.  Blake and I had a fantastic time at the event and thank you so much to Claire for inviting us to attend!  Thank you also to Lois Cozart, Owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary and downtown Apex for selecting the fantastic dress that I wore!  It was a sea foam slip with a delicate lace wrap, very artsy and very beautiful! I had lots of complements on the dress, thanks so much Lois!
