Fall is Here!

Fall is Here!

Fall is Here!

Good-bye Summer and Hello FALL!  YEA!!!  My favorite time of year!  Just looking ahead at the month of October and all of the great networking events, social activities, and holiday events…I’ve got goose bumps head-to-toe!  The weather is starting to get cooler too, so it is perfect for football, the NC State Fair and  more!  Our office is staying busy getting into the “Fall Season” and here are a few fun things to share about what we already have going on.

Pumpkin Painting

Pumpkin Painting

So let’s kick this blog off with a little bit of Halloween fun! Cam and his family recently picked out pumpkins at a local pumpkin patch and then decorated the pumpkins at home with paint.  What is better to wear then your Smith & Smith, CPA shirt for some family pumpkin painting!?! The t-shirts are from the Cary Chamber Education Golf Tournament in 2012 where Smith & Smith, CPA was the proud official Volunteer T-Shirt Sponsor.  The color is perfect for painting pumpkins (especially if you get kinda messy and get it on your shirt!)   Looks like Connor and Bailey had a fun time and their pumpkins look great!  Our CPA firm enjoys the opportunity to sponsor local community events, my favorite ones to support are the ones that include t-shirts with our names on them!

Fall wedding

Fall wedding

Fall season also means LOTS of weddings!  We’ve had our share of attending weddings here lately, Cam and Brooke went to two weddings in September, Blake & I went to one in Banner Elk, (also in September) and Alicia and her family recently attended a family wedding.  Her cousin, Josh, got married and had their wedding reception at the NC State Faculty Club in Raleigh.  Here is a cute picture of Alicia and her oldest daughter, Avery, attending the wedding together.  The NC State Faculty Club is a great location for events, we typically attend a good amount of networking events there each year.  Plus it is where Alicia went to school, Go PACK!

Disney

Disney

Blake and I recently returned from our ‘anniversary’ week of vacation.  We took the boys (Trent is tracked out right now from school) down to the Florida Gulf Coast and spent 5 days at St. Pete Beach and then 3-days in Orlando at SeaWorld, Magic Kingdom Disney and Blizzard Beach water park.  It was our best family vacation yet!  Perfect weather and great memories! Here is a picture of us in the Swiss Family Robinson Tree House at Disney.  The boys had a blast and Blake & I really enjoyed the time away together too.  Coming back to work today has been an adjustment for sure! Bob and Sharon are leaving soon for a 10-day cruise!  Oh the Fall…good things are happening!  I’ll be out and around town for the whole month of October, hope to see you!

Shopping is Good for the Soul…and the Economy!

Caroline and Morgan of Vestique

Caroline and Morgan of Vestique

As a woman living in the Triangle area, you can’t deny the fact that there are some really great places to shop around here!  And yes, I totally love it, and yes, I have some of my favorites.  Earlier this week I went by Vestique, a client of Smith & Smith, CPA, to see the owners, Caroline and Morgan.  They celebrated their 3rd Year Anniversary with their store and were hosting a CELEBRATION!  I first learned about Vestique a few years ago when the New & Observer ran a story in the paper about them…two friends from college, with a passion for fashion, starting with just trunk shows at other local stores, then moving to an online store and now, just three short years later, they have four stores (Raleigh, Charlotte, Greenville, SC and Columbia, SC).  Talk about successful!

3 Year Celebration Event

3 Year Celebration Event

We are so proud to have them as clients at Smith & Smith, CPA and Blake really enjoys working with Caroline and Morgan on their growing fashion retail business.  These two girls certainly know how to mix fabulous fashion with affordable style!  The celebration event was PACKED; just take a look at the crowded store in the picture!  I even picked up a few goodies for myself while I was there.  We love supporting our clients by shopping at their stores and using their services.  You can shop at Vestique online (at anytime) or go by one of their stores.  Be sure you get added to their mailing list as they are always running lots of great deals! Congrats to them both!

Peachy Keen Casino Fashion Show

Peachy Keen Casino Fashion Show

Another fun ‘fashion boutique chic’ event was last night.  Peachy Keen hosted their Annual Fall Fashion Show with a ‘Casino’ style theme…let the chips fall where they may!  This was a great opportunity to get my girlfriends together for an evening out.  We had about 12 girlfriends that met at Peachy Keen around 6pm for their social/cocktail hour, followed by an introduction and the fashion show.  Peachy Keen is owned by a local family and they certainly know how to celebrate with vintage style!

Tia, Becca & An

I really enjoyed all of the delicious food during the cocktail hour (yummy foods from The Meat House, The Big Easy, Sitti and Trader Joe’s) and also all of the games and activities they had going on before the fashion show.  My friend Tia was really serious about the Black Jack table!  There were several sponsors for the event including friends of mine from Nivelli Day Spa, ShopLocalRaleigh, StudioVIBE, and Order in the House.  There was also live entertainment provided by Cole Roe (really good singer and guitarist).  Several of the girls in our group were lucky jackpot prize winners too, congrats to my friend Jamie on winning the AWESOME bag of goodies from Trader Joes!  We really enjoyed the fashion show down the built-in-runway in the store!

Fashion Runway

After the show, we did some shopping and mingling.  Several of my friends bought some great items!  I was happy to have one of my college best friends in town, Lindsey Dishman, so she could go along with us.  She’s on her way to Virginia Beach for a work meeting, so Blake and I always enjoy being her ‘pit stop’ for the night.  Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex and downtown Cary for the lovely black Karen Kane top I wore to the fashion show.

Lindsey in town!

Lindsey in town!

I wore it with a pair of cheetah print leggings and black boots, just for a fun twist!  My Girlfriend’s Closet was voted “Best Place to Shop for Women’s Clothing” in the 2013 Cary Magazine Maggy Awards and I would have to agree with that!  Thank to Lois and her team for keeping me styled great for all of my networking events.

No plans for the weekend?  Add Vestique, My Girlfriend’s Closet and Peachy Keen to your weekend list, you will be ‘fashionably’ happy that you did!

WBON Mega Networking Time!

Winners!

Winners!

Earlier this week on Wednesday, WBON of Cary held their Annual Fall Mega Networking Event.  This year the event was held at the beautiful Matthews House in downtown Cary.   The Matthews House is a client of Smith & Smith, CPA, so I always enjoy going there for events!  Sheila Ogle, owner of The Matthews House, was very gracious to have WBON there for our Mega Networking and she even joined us for lunch.  The room was full of ladies and we enjoyed lunch and open networking before the meeting.

WBON Friends

WBON Friends

President Christine started the meeting, welcomed all of the new guests, and invited all of the new members up front to introduce them to the group.  Lots of new members this month, YEA!  There was a really funny announcement made about the Murder & Mayhem event that is going to be held on November 20th called “Killing for the Crown”.  This will be the WBON Scholarship Fundraiser this year (instead of an auction as done in the years past).  It sounds like it is going to be lots of fun and I can’t wait to go!

Full room at The Matthews House

Full room at The Matthews House

The whole focus for the Mega Networking event it to get to meet and talk to as many ladies possible in the room.  WBON has done this many different ways over the years.  This year, we decided to give everyone a chance to stand and speak for 30 seconds.  That’s right…just 30!  And it goes fast, so you need to be prepared and ready to go!  We added a twist to make it more fun and had three WBON members serve as judges for the “Most Creative, Most Unique and Most Memorable”.  Fun stuff right!?!  I prepared mine the day before and even took a short trip over to Party City to pick up a few supplies for my 30-seconds about Smith & Smith, CPA.

Lock it up!

Lock it up!

I could tell a few other of my friends had also prepared in advance as they also had some cool props!  I loved hearing all of the ladies speak and tell their stories.  Some were really funny, a few ladies were nervous, but that is expected if you are not used to speaking to a crowd.  But it is all for fun and for the sake of new business connections and support!  In the end, Cindy Prince won for Most Unique; Dr. Heather Sefried won for Most Creative; and yours truly, Becca Smith, won for Most Memorable!  YEA!  I took a big gold crown and called myself the “Queen of Numbers”…I had a large wand with a $ on the end and set of handcuffs warning ladies to keep up with their numbers so they can stay out of jail.  Funny, unique, a little crazy and yes…Memorable!  I got one of the new WBON logo coffee mugs as a prize.  Kudos to all of the other winners and to the WBON Board for their hard work with this event.  Well Done!
And thanks to Lois Cozart, owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet, for dressing me in this lovely and really unique dress by Boston Proper!

Hey…It is the Weekend!!!  Personal Tax Extensions are due TUESDAY, October 15th!  Hope you are filed…otherwise, get it DONE this weekend!

Awards to the Community

2013 Cary Community Foundation Grant Awards Breakfast

2013 Cary Community Foundation Grant Awards Breakfast

Last Friday I attended the Cary Community Foundation 2013 Grants Awards Breakfast at the lovely Matthews House in downtown Cary.  The Matthews House is a client of Smith & Smith, CPA, and a very beautiful place for events of all kinds!   I joined the Cary Community Foundation Board earlier this year and it has been a fun opportunity and I’ve met some wonderful community leaders.  I helped serve on the Grants Committee this year and we had over 25 grant applications to read through and compare.  It was so hard…I wanted to give them ALL grant money!  I had tears in my eyes as I read through the grant applications.  We had $7,000 to give out to all of these worthy organizations.

Susan, Elise and Becca

Susan, Elise and Becca

The grant awards were divided into different categories, which made it much easier to judge.  The Cary Community Foundation President, Carla Liberatore, hosted the Grants Awards Breakfast and opened the morning with a welcome.  Sheila Ogle of the Matthews House offered the invocation and then breakfast was served buffet style (and it was sooo yummy and healthy!)  Vice President, Laird Hepburn, gave out all of the grant checks and asked each recipient to speak briefly about their organization and how the money would be used to benefit the good of those in the Cary Community.  Once again, some of the stories that the grant recipients shared really brought tears to your eyes.  It is so rewarding to know that the money is being put to good use for those who really need an extra hand in life.  One of my favorite non-profits, The Corral, was the recipient of grant money that will be used towards after school educational supplies for the girls at The Corral.

Another one of my favorite grant awards was given to Hospice of Wake County for a signature piece of art that will be put in the bereavement garden and will be focused on children and their healing needs.  The morning event was very special and I think everyone left the breakfast feeling blessed and uplifted.   Congrats to all of the grant award recipients!   I enjoyed seeing lots of friends and also would like to thank, Liz Cantino from VantageSouth Bank for joining me as my guest.

I loved seeing my friend Elise Johnson and here is a cute picture of us with Cary Community Foundation Board member, Susan Balke (of DHW CPA).  Thanks to Lois Cozart, owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex and downtown Cary for selecting this lovely dress by eci New York for me to wear to the grants awards breakfast.  I had several compliments on it!  Shop at My Girlfriend’s Closet and tell them you read about them in Beccablog.com and get 10% off your purchase!

Dr. Jaff and His Family

Dr. Jaff and Family

Dr. Jaff and Family

Last Thursday our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club had the unique pleasure of hearing from Dr. Dilshad Jaff, a Rotary Peace Fellow Scholar who is studying here in the USA at the Duke-UNC Rotary Center for International Studies.  Dr. Jaff and his lovely wife, Suzan, and their daughter, Yasna, came to the US earlier this summer and are staying in Carrboro, NC.  A few weeks ago, in late September, we had an off-site Rotary Club meeting at Life Experiences and got to meet Dr. Jaff and his family (and also did a surprise birthday party for Dr. Jaff!!) I really enjoyed meeting them and Yasna had fun playing with all of the other Cary-Kildaire Rotary kids.

Traditional Kurdish dress

Traditional Kurdish dress

Last Thursday Dr. Jaff shared with our club about his work with the International Committee of the Red Cross and Rotary Peace Center at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand.  His presentation was really interesting and included lots of before and after slides of different medical clinics in the Middle East.  I really enjoyed hearing Suzan speak about her traditional Kurdish dress; oh my it was soooooo lovely!  She came to the front so we could all see her lovely black and red print dress.  The traditional Kurdish dress is an ongoing part of the Kurdish heritage and has never gone out of fashion.  They dresses are for everyday wear and not reserved only for holidays. The outfit usually includes a vest or long-sleeved jacket worn over the gown (Suzan had on a bright red sequenced vest).  An underdress and puffy pants is worn underneath the dress.

Awesome shoes!!!

Awesome shoes!!!

Suzan had on black puffy pants that were very sparkly!  She also had on a really neat accessory headpiece and lots of jewelry!  It was really special for her to dress this way and come to visit our club!  Thanks so much Suzan for sharing part of your Kurdish heritage with us!  We also enjoyed hearing Dr. Jaff give his presentation and we look forward to seeing more of them during their time here in the USA.

Fighting Hunger Around the World

World Food Day delivery

World Food Day delivery

Today, October 16th, is World Food Day, a global movement to help end hunger.  This year marks the 32nd Annual World Food Day and is focusing on sustainable food systems for those who are hungry around the world.  Scott Rossi, a dear friend of mine, client of Smith & Smith, CPA and a fellow Cary-Kildaire Rotarian reminded me last week about World Food Day.  We didn’t have much time to put a food drive together, but we did it anyway and our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club came through BIG TIME (just like they always do!)  We did a 1-day food drive, I sent an email out about 3-hours before the weekly meeting and we managed to collect two large boxes of food!  I delivered that food to Docras Ministries just a few hours ago, today, Wednesday, October 16, 2013…the 32nd Annual World Food Day!  And I was proudly wearing my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club polo shirt.  What can YOU do today to help fight hunger around the world…but also in your community?

It’s a Mix & Match Friday

Becca and Ashley

Becca and Ashley

Happy Friday!  This blog post is gonna be crazy and kinda all over the place…a sort of mix & match from events this week.  So let’s get going!  On Monday, I met with a new friend, Ashley Culpepper, over at Orange Leaf frozen yogurt in Cary.  Ashley is an Account Executive with Mix 101.5 WRAL-FM and got my contact info through a co-worker who had attended a WBON meeting earlier this year.  I really enjoyed talking with Ashley and finding out more about her and her position with the radio station.  Turns out that we have a very similar target market and client base.  I’m looking forward to doing some client referrals with Ashley in the coming months.

Skirt party

Skirt party

Monday evening I went to my friend Susan Pruskin’s house for a SKIRT PARTY!  That’s right, a SKIRT PARTY!!  We met a really nice lady named Melani at the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch in September and we just went CRAZY over her skirts!  They come in all different sizes and colors/patterns.  She had full length maxi, A-line and pencil skirts.  Susan offered to have a skirt party at her house, so we invited a few friends to come over and have some delicious food, social time and skirt shopping time!  It was really fun, so thank you Susan for hosting!  I got a lovely long maxi and wore it on Tuesday night to our WBON Board Meeting…and two of my other friends from the skirt party also had their new maxi skirts on!  Here is a picture of me with Lisa Cotter and Elisa Roles wearing our new skirts!

With Halloween a few weeks away…our office has been getting into the season with some yummy Halloween treats!  Thanks to our friends and referral partner, Amy Gretenstein over at PrimePay Payroll for stopping by the office this week with a jack-o-lantern full of some really delicious Halloween candy!  Here is a picture of Cam holding the pumpkin, as he gets ready to pick out his favorite chocolate bars!  Thanks for thinking of us Amy and for stopping by to say hello!  We put the candy out in the front lobby to share with everyone who comes through…but you better come by soon as I’m not sure how long it will last!

Becca & Alicia

Becca & Alicia

This week on Wednesday was the October Triangle Ladies Power Luncheon.  The event was held at North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh and my guests this month at the Smith & Smtih, CPA table were: Alicia Angell, Tia Coppus (Bank of NC) and Heidi Harris (Allen Tate Realtors).  Alicia went early with me to help work the Smith & Smith, CPA booth and we also had fun networking and meeting new friends.  This was our first event too with our new Smith & Smith, CPA tailgate chairs and coolers with the logo on them!  They were a  big hit!

Tia with Marla and other friends

Tia with Marla and other friends

The breast cancer survivor this time, the She-Ro, was actually a mom and her two daughters, Marla and Becky.  Their story was probably the most moving and emotional that I have ever heard!  My friend Tia knew the sisters and she was so excited to be there for their special highlight.  Becky writes a blog called Becky vs. Cancer.  It is a scream to read as she takes a very comical and in-your-face approach to hear cancer.   The speaker on Wednesday was Nanette Geiger and she shared with the group her CSI plan to action.

It’s the weekend!!  Whoo-hooo!  I’m off to the lovely mountains of Banner Elk & Boone for a girls-weekend with some friends.  Thanks to my awesome hubby, Blake, for taking care of the boys while I’m gone.  Love you Blake!

Honored and Respected by these Amazing Women!

Liz of VantageSouth Bank with Becca

Liz of VantageSouth Bank with Becca

Last Friday I had the pleasure of attending The Women of Western Wake Luncheon, hosted by The Umstead Hotel & Spa in Cary, NC.  I was invited to attend by my good friend, Liz Cantino of VantageSouth Bank, who happened to be the Presenting Sponsor for this fantastic event!  I’ve attended this celebration luncheon in the past and it certainly ranks up there pretty high as being a FAVORITE event!  Thanks so much Liz for having me as a guest at your table!  Cary Magazine has been doing this luncheon since 2005 and it honors female movers and shakers in the Cary and Western Wake community.  The event includes networking and lunch, followed by opening remarks and the introduction of the selected female leaders.  Tisha Powell, anchor for ABC Channel 11 News, hosts the candid panel discussion with the honored selected women.

Honoree Panel

Honoree Panel

The 2013 Cary Magazine Women of Westeran Wake included the following ladies: Joy Ennis, Lynn Minges, DJ Mitsch, Michelle Pfeiffer and Susan Zarate.  I have some sort of connection-link to each of these women!  Joy is married to Shelton Ennis, who is in my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club; Lynn Minges is the CEO of the NC Restaurant & Lodging Association and I knew her name as a college student at East Carolina University while studying in the Hospitality Management Program; DJ Mitsch is married to Barry Mitsch with whom I have the pleasure of serving with on the Cary Chamber Board of Directors (I also know DJ from the Honor A Teacher Program they do once a year); Michelle Pfeiffer, Founder of Anna’s Angels spoke to our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club a few months ago as a guest of Mary Madenspacher (from Life Experiences) and Susan Zarate works at Cary High School in the ESL program, same school where my mother-in-law, Sharon Smith, used to teach Freshman English for 10+ years.

Congrats to Joy Ennis!

Congrats to Joy Ennis!

So I’ve had the honored pleasure of crossing paths with these amazing women!  I enjoyed the panel discussion where the ladies were seated on stage and asked different things about their lives, from their personal success stories to their industry specific challenges. I loved what Joy Ennis has to say when asked the questions “As a working woman…do you think it is possible to have IT ALL”.  Joy answered the question by saying “You have to first define what having IT ALL means to you personally, as IT ALL is not going to be the same to everyone”.

Great insight Joy!  Congrats to all of these fantastic honorees!  Thanks again to Liz Cantino from VantageSouth Bank for allowing me to be her guest and also a thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for the lovely black dress and strappy platform shoes for the event!  I love stepping out in STYLE with My Girlfriend’s Closet!

Alicia & Becca with the Smith & Smith, CPA booth

Alicia & Becca with the Smith & Smith, CPA booth

On Tuesday of this week Alicia and I attended the Carolina Parent 12th Annual Women@Work Breakfast.  I went to this event a few years ago when it was held at the American Tobacco Campus in Durham.  This year it was held in Cary (yea!) at the Embassy Suites.   I didn’t sign-up to exhibit in the Coffee & Connections part until late last week, but the timing really worked out well for us.  I went early around 7am to get our Smith & Smith, CPA booth set-up and Alicia came over a little after 8am.  We used our new Smith & Smith, CPA tailgate chairs and cooler as display on our exhibit table and offered them as our give-away for people who stopped by and dropped in a business card.

Raleigh Realty Mom

Raleigh Realty Mom

I thought the Coffee & Connections part went really well and we made lots of new friends, referral connections and best of all some potential new clients.  Here is a picture of our new friend, Heather Petrovich, a realtor with Fonville Morisey.  Heather is branding her real estate expertise as the “Raleigh Realty Mom” The Realtor for Parents.  I love that!  I think it is always a great idea to try to market/brand yourself with a niche area, especially when it comes to real estate. I happened to see Heather on Wednesday too at the Cary Chamber Eye Opener Breakfast; I think she is a new member at the Cary Chamber! YEA!  Good for your Heather!  I look forward to seeing you in the Cary area.

Women@Work

After the Coffee & Connections hour we went into the ballroom for a light breakfast and the speaker/health panel.  The featured speaker was Kathy Kastan, a blogger for the Huffington Post who underwent heart bypass surgery at age 42.  She’s currently the Director of Duke Medicine’s Women’s Healthy and Advocacy Initiative.  Her story was very moving and gave a humorous perspective on family life.  Alicia and I both enjoyed hearing her story.  During the program they also honored the Carolina Parent 2013 NC Family-Friendly 50 Companies, selected in partnership with UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School.

Congrats Nathan Horton!

Congrats Nathan Horton!

I would love to see Smith & Smith, CPA named as one of these companies in the coming years.   There was a TON of great door prizes given away at the end of the program, including the grand prize, a $6,000 complete orthodontia package by The Happy Tooth.  Speaking of door prizes…I know you want to know who won the Smith & Smith, CPA tailgate chairs & cooler!  The lucky winner is Nathan Horton, a Consumer Loan Underwriter 3 President, Raleigh Veteran’s TMN for Wells Fargo Home Mortgage.  Wells Fargo was one of the four Presenting Sponsors for the Women@Work breakfast.  Thanks to Nathan for stopping by our Smith & Smith, CPA booth to say hello.  He also picked up one of our really cool lipstick pens, those were a popular item and really brought people over to the table.  Thanks to all of the wonderful people who stopped by our booth.  We certainly made some great connections during the Coffee & Connections…plus the coffee was great too!  Congrats to all of the companies being honored!  Thanks to Lois Cozart from My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex and downtown Cary for dressing me in this lovely Veronica M Clothing silk-shift-drop-waist dress.  It was a beautiful dress and I had lots of compliments!  Shop at My Girlfriend’s Closet, tell them you read Beccablog.com and get 10% off your purchase!

Networking & Shopping with my Mom!

Marsha & Becca

Marsha & Becca

Last week my sweet mother, Marsha, stopped by Cary for a few days, she was on her way to Tennessee to see my grandmother.  We made plans earlier this year to attend the 29th Annual A Shopping SPREE in downtown Raleigh. This event is hosted by the Junior League of Raleigh and draws vendors from all over the country!   The 4-day shopping/networking event is held at the Raleigh Convention Center and costs only $10 for the shopping pass.  I was so excited to go with my mom as we have several clients from Smith & Smith, CPA who sell & participate in the show.  We got there around 11:30am and had a wonderful time together talking, networking and shopping (I was proud to be sporting my red Smith & Smith, CPA polo).  I loved the BIG bags that they give you when you arrive and TRUST ME…mine was nearly full in just a few short hours!

Seton & Becca

Seton & Becca

I was so happy to see Seton McGlennon, owner of Seton’s Specialties, with her awesome booth at the Shopping Spree.  I met Seton a few years ago at the Cary Lazy Daze Festival and we’ve been friends ever since!  She’s been a very generous donor for different auctions over the years and is also a valued client at Smith & Smith, CPA.  Seton is a very talented artist and does amazing work!  Check out her website!  She’s been featured on Oprah’s Favorite Things and also designed & created 2000 ornaments as the national Christmas gifts given by President and Mrs. Bush in 2004 and again in 2006!  Great to see you Seton!  I also was happy to see another one of my favorite vendors, Susan from Cuddle Corn!  I met Susan last year at this event and totally fell in love with her product!  I was happy to see her again this year as I purchased two more of her Cuddle Corn wraps (great for heating & cooling pads).

This year she had special ones made from a very nice pink fabric (in honor of October Breast Cancer month) and donated a $1 from each pink Cuddle Corn sale back to breast cancer research (my mom also bought one too).  It was such a fantastic afternoon!  Always so happy to be out in the community seeing our clients in action and supporting local talent!  Thanks to Meg Moraites of the Junior League of Raleigh for helping me with my ticket!

Our CPA firm in Cary is growing and we are currently welcoming new clients.  Please check out our website for more information  http://www.smithandsmithcpa.com  We are never too busy to help a small business owner with their accounting/tax needs.  We welcome referrals!
