Softball, Farmers Market & Coffee!

Smith & Smith, CPA kids at the softball game

Wow…it feels like FOREVER since I wrote a blog!  And maybe it feels that way because it HAS BEEN!  The end of August was a little bit quiet and then we had the nice long Labor Day Holiday weekend and here we are rolling right into September!  Things are busy around Smith & Smith, CPA as we look towards wrapping up all of the corporate tax return extensions (due September 16th) and personal tax return extensions (due October 15th).  Blake & Cam have been busy through the week playing on the Triangle Community Church recreational league Men’s Softball team.  Here is a cute picture of the kiddos watching their daddy’s play ball this week.

Engaged with Rotary at Western Wake Farmers Market

Engaged with Rotary at Western Wake Farmers Market with Jan & Debbie

Earlier this summer I challenged my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club to try to wear a Rotary shirt at least once a week to fully feel “ENGAGED” in Rotary.  I’m trying to lead by example, so here is a picture of me wearing the GlobalRun4Water shirt from last year’s event at the Western Wake Farmers Market over the weekend.  I was visiting the market with fellow Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club member, Jerry Kozel and his lovely wife, Jan.  This picture was taken under the Muddy Dog Roasting Company tent and I’m in the picture with Jan and Debbie Pelligrini.  Debbie & her husband, Jim, are the owners of the Muddy Dog Roasting Co.  Jerry & I were looking at field space for our upcoming Harvest Fest with the Western Wake Farmers Market scheduled for late October.

Lots of great events and things coming this Fall…my FAVORITE time of year!

NC Governor Pat McCrory & Awards Celebration

NC Governor Pat McCrory

NC Governor Pat McCrory

Last night was the 2013 Cary Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet, held in the Grand Ballroom at the beautiful Prestonwood Country Club.  I look forward to this celebration with the Cary Chamber every year!  It is always so much fun to go and see so many business friends and celebrate another fantastic year.  The event this year was particularly exciting as the NC Governor, Pat McCrory, was the keynote speaker.  The evening event quickly sold out and there was a long waiting list for those who still had high hopes of getting a ticket to attend.   The evening began with a social/cocktail hour at 6 pm, followed by dinner & program at 7 pm.

Chamber friends & Ambassador of the Year

Chamber friends & Ambassador of the Year

Upon arrival, you were greeted by the wonderful staff at Prestonwood Country Club with a glass of wine and some delicious hors d’oeuvres.  I was sitting at one of the Board of Directors tables with my good friends Claire Smith, Kyle Greer, Rob Alexander, and Barry Mitsch.  Kathy Burns started the evening with a welcome & prayer. I’m so happy for Kathy as she has had a fantastic year serving as Chair for the Cary Chamber.  Last night served as her final event and she passed the gravel at the end of the program to the Incoming Chair, Frank Shell.

Becca & Michelle Muir

There was a special announcement by Highwoods Properties announcing where the MetLife facility will be built and located in Cary.  The keynote address included “a conversation” between Tamara Barringer, NC Senator, District 17 and NC Governor, Pat McCrory.  It was a very candid conversation with the two of them seated on stage in big overstuffed chairs.  Barringer lead the conversation by asking the Governor several questions about his past few months in office and even asked him to explain his ‘typical day in office’.  I enjoyed the conversation  and it was really cool to see lots of media & security all around the edge of the room.  I’ve never seen the Grand Ballroom so FULL!  After their conversation ended, it was time for the Special Awards Presentation.  I was so honored to have been asked to present the Ambassador of the Year Award.

Inviting the Governor to the Art Ball

I was nervous when I took the stage (there were 400+ people out there!!!!), but a deep breath and smile helped me be cool and collected.  The Ambassador of the Year Award is voted on by all of the Ambassadors that year and it’s always such a privilege & honor to win.  This year, the award went to my friend (and Membership Drive travel companion), Alison Guthrie.  Cary Mayor Harold Weinbrecht presented the next award, Business of the Year, to Highwoods Properties.  The final award, Citizen of the Year, was presented by Steve Zaytoun and went to the Stephens brothers for all of their work & business integrity as part of Cary Oil Company.  After the event ended, Claire and I made our way to say hello to Governor McCrory.  Claire is part of the committee for the 2013 Cary Visual Art Ball that will be held on November 17th and she wanted to get the opportunity to invite Governor McCrory to the event, and she did!  Fingers crossed that he will be able to attend.  Way to go Claire!

Delicious dessert at Prestonwood!

Thanks so much to the Cary Chamber and the staff for all of their hard work and dedicated hours to make the event last night such a huge success and lots of fun!  I think everyone had a great time!

Thanks so much to my favorite shopping place in town, My Girlfriend’s Closet, for the beautiful dress that I wore!  Lois knew it would be a great fit and it was it!  Thanks also to Ashley who owns & manages the downtown Cary store location for helping me with jewelry and shoes!  They really know fashion and know how to dress anyone and keep it within your budget.  I had lots of compliments on my dress!  Way to go MGC!  Go shopping there and tell them Becca sent you!

Joining Rotary is Life Changing!

New member Don Johnson

New member Don Johnson

One of our biggest goals for Rotary International this year is to really focus on growing our clubs and adding members.  Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club is off to a good start as we have already added two new members since July!  Here is a picture of me, President Becca, with our first new member, Don Johnson.  Don is a realtor with Keller Williams at Don Johnson Real Estate Team.  Don specializes in home sales in the Triangle area and will hold one of the realtor seats in our Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club We are still looking to add a commercial realtor and some mortgage brokers.  Rotary Clubs usually limit the classification seats to about 3 people per professionI’m very happy to have Don as a new member and proud of Bill Lefes for proposing him for membership.  More members to come!  Are you interested in serving the community with Rotary?  I invited you to join us for dinner one Thursday night to learn more!

And here is a good picture to share of Blake and Trent (our oldest son) wearing their Smith & Smith, CPA t-shirts over the weekend.  Blake & Bob have been working weekends here lately to get the corporate tax return extensions completed, they are due on September 16th, so just another week to go!  Blake wore his shirt to work on Saturday, still looking professional, but a bit more relaxed for a weekend-office-day.  Trent wears his shirt often to school and just so happened to have it on at the same time, so hence a photographic moment!  We had these shirts made last year in conjunction with our T-Shirt Sponsorship for the Cary Chamber of Commerce Education Golf Tournament.  We hope to sponsor this event again soon in the years to come.  Don’t the boys look nice promoting Smith & Smith, CPA!?!  Blake wore his shirt that night too for our triple-date to dinner at Hot Point Deli and to see the movie, “We are the Millers”…which is really  hilarious by the way!  While the service could have been better at Hot Point Deli, the food was delicious and the outdoor seating makes for a nice evening. Hot Point Deli on Urbanspoon

How will YOU Remember…How will YOU Serve?

911_logoSeptember 11th 2001 is a day that many of us will remember forever…I was in my college dorm at East Carolina University packing & preparing to head to the airport for a Hospitality Management trip to Phoenix, AZ…needless to say I never went to the airport and that trip never happened.  I watched on the news as the horrific events of that day unfolded…In 2009 September 11th was formally designated as National Day of Service and Remembrance.  So what will you do today to “Join the 9/11 Day of Observance”?  I will be doing some volunteer work later this evening after work with m boys…I want to make sure they grow-up with a life & heart to help serve others.

Small Business Issues and WBON of Cary

Elizabeth & Becca at the Small Business Financial Seminar

Elizabeth & Becca at the Small Business Financial Seminar

Yesterday was a busy day, I can certainly tell that Fall networking events are starting to pick-up and kick into high gear!  My good friend, Elizabeth Cantino, Branch Manager at VantageSouth Bank (High House location in Cary, NC) invited me to their Common Small Business Financial Issues seminar.  Wanda Queen, who serves VantageSouth Bank as the Senior Vice President & Region President, led the event & group discussion.  There were about 25 small business owners in attendance and we went around the room to introduce ourselves.  I knew several of the people in the room, but also met a few new ones.

Wanda, Elizabeth and Alice

Wanda, Elizabeth and Alice

Wanda spent the next hour discussing issues that small business owners face, such as: cash flow, monitoring & understanding financial statements, knowing how to cost and price services correctly, knowing how to structure debt, having a strong and solid business plan, and having professional advisors as consultants with whom you can trust and consult for advice.  I found the discussion to be very helpful and engaging.  Thanks to Elizabeth, Wanda and Alice for hosting us and I look forward to attending more seminars in the future.

WBON Board Members, Lunch Sponsor & Guest Speaker

WBON Board Members, Lunch Sponsor & Guest Speaker

WBON of Cary held their September meeting yesterday afternoon at Presetonwood Country Club.  Our speaker was Adele Michal who spoke on the topic of “End Your Money Worries: 3 Steps to Stop Squashing Your Income and Start Making More Money”.  We had a nice crowd of women and several new members and first time visitors.  It’s always nice to see new women joining the group.  This year, first time visitors are given a white boa to wear and new members are given a purple boa…it’s a way of making them standout and feel recognized by other women in the group.  I had missed the August WBON meeting due to a conflict with another group, so it was really nice to be back at WBON this month.  I love my WBON friends and really value the relationships that I have built through this group.

Welcome to WBON!

Welcome to WBON!

I helped Susan Pruskin and Elisa Roles at the front desk with check-in and I really enjoyed being able to help greet the ladies as they arrived.  Our lunch sponsor was Academy Street Bistro with MaryLynn Fitzgerald, General Manager, at the meeting to tell us all about the new restaurant in the heart of downtown Cary.  I am looking forward to going there this Friday night with some friends and checking it out!  Thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for dressing me in the fantastic Diane Von Furstenberg animal print dress, matching necklace/bracelet and the Michael Kors heels, (that I purchased from her store last Fall).  My Girlfriend’s Closet is ready for the Fall weather with a huge selection of cute boots and jeans!  Stop by there and tell them you read about them in Beccasblog.com.

Triangle Ladies Power Lunch September Speaker

WBON at Triangle Ladies Power Lunch

WBON at Triangle Ladies Power Lunch

Yesterday was the September meeting of the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch.  I took along Alicia Angell (from our CPA office), Susan Pruskin (Susan Pruskin Consulting) and Jamie Glass (WakeTech) as my three guests.  We arrived early to get our Smith & Smith, CPA table set-up (thanks for your help ladies) and we also helped with the WBON of Cary booth that was right across from us.  WBON of Cary has their Annual Fall Mega-Networking Event coming up on October 9th and the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch was a great opportunity to market and share our event with other ladies in the area.

The speaker for September Triangle Ladies Power Lunch was Lynn Bardowski, the Million Dollar Party Girl.  Lynn shared her story of being a mom working for corporate America but knew there was something more fulfilling out there for her in life.  In the late 1980’s she started with the company, PartyLite and within 3 ½ years she had made her first million dollars.  Lynn talked about overcoming fear and obstacles, plus self-doubt and barriers along the way.  She gave an inspiring talk and I am sure she encouraged many ladies in the room.

Carrie Peele, founder of Triangle Ladies Power Lunch and owner of Blue Diamond Limo (also a client of Smith & Smith, CPA) was very gracious to allow me a few minutes during the meeting to make an announcement about the upcoming 2nd Annual GlobalRun4Water.  I was able to share with the crowd about the success of our event last year and all of the people/children we were able to help with clean water sources.  After the meeting I met a new friend from the Central Johnston Rotary Club and she took the water jug back with her to her club to get it filled-up with coins and dollars.  Thanks so much!  Thank you also to Lois Cozart at My Girlfriend’s Closet for getting me set earlier this week with a great Fall wardrobe!  They have all kinds of beautiful new boots, jackets and jeans in their stores and ready to wear!  Go by and check them out and tell them you read about them on Beccasblog.com!

Downtown Cary and White Tiger

Academy Street Bistro

Academy Street Bistro

So how did you celebrate Friday the 13th last week?  I went out with some girlfriends to one of the newest places in downtown Cary…Academy Street Bistro.   One of my good friends, Andrea, is bartending there and invited me out to see the new place.  It’s very nice and located right in the heart of downtown Cary.  We had a great time hanging out there in the front dining room and our food was delicious!  We tried several different things off the menu and really enjoyed our experience!  It’s a great place for a dinner date on the patio, a drink after work with a friend or for a party.  Thanks Andrea for inviting us out!  I’ll be back soon!

Before I went to Academy Street Bistro, I dropped our boys over at White Tiger Taekwondo for their Friday the 13th Parents Night Out.  White Tiger has been a client of Smith & Smith, CPA for a LONG TIME and our boys LOVE going there!  They had a full night planned of games, demonstrations, play area, zip line, pizza party, movies and more!  Here is a cool picture of the boys with their friend, Amber, and one of the White Tiger teachers.  The kids had a great time and we’ll be back for another Parents Night Out for sure!  I don’t know about you…but Friday the 13th days sure make for a fun experience!  Happy weekend!!  We are heading to the NC mountains for a wedding!

Hanging with the Horses for CPA Day of Service

CPA Day of Service

CPA Day of Service

Last Friday, September 20th, was CPA Day of Service, sponsored by the NCACPA.  All CPA firms in North Carolina were encouraged to volunteer for a community organization of their choice, (you could work as a group or as individuals) and you could commit the whole day or just a few hours volunteering.  We participated last year in 2012 at Life Experiences in Cary and had a great time.  This year we went to The Corral Riding Academy.  The Corral is a non-profit that works with at-risk teenage girls by pairing them with horses that have been rescued from their unsafe environment.

The Corral

The Corral

The girls learn how to take care of the horse, engage with the horses through chores and “life on the farm” and also get help with schoolwork, tutoring and successful life skills. I love The Corral and have been personally involved with them over the past few years.  I believe in the work they are doing, I enjoy their staff, their location is great (close to our house) and I always enjoy being on the farm with the horses.

Mending the fence

Becca mending the fence

Marinna Jasso, the Volunteer Coordinator, at The Corral, worked with me a few weeks in advance on planning our CPA Day of Service.  On Friday morning, Alicia, Cam, Blake and I showed up at The Corral farm for a half-day of volunteering.   Our first project was to work on a fence between Field 1 and Field 2 by securing the wire fence into place on the stakes.  The horses, one in particular, (the little white pony) was having fun running from one field to the next by cutting through the fence.  So we had to fix that.

Fencing building

Blake & Cam Fencing building

It started to rain while we were working, but Marinna brought us some ponchos and we kept on fixing the fence.  Our next project was to build a temporary pasture around back near Field 3 so the horses could have some new grassy areas to graze.  This took a bit of coordination and some use of farm/fencing equipment that can be a little foreign to a group of ‘office workers’.  But we had fun and learned a lot about taking care of a farm & horses!  The horses were beautiful and were very friendly.  They came right up to us and wanted lots of attention!

Alicia digging soil samples

Alicia digging soil samples

Our final project was to take soil samples from three of the fields and box them for testing at NC State.  This required us to dig three holes on each field, then mix the soil together and box it up for the sampling.  Not such an easy job when parts of the field had really hard ground.   The NCACPA provided nice green CPA Day of Service t-shirts for everyone to wear.  They also held a photo contest again this year and the winner will be on the front of the NCACPA magazine.  While we didn’t win last year, we did make it into the magazine.  This YEAR though, we are hoping to WIN and be on the front cover!  Below are the two pictures that we’ve submitted for the contest…what do you think??  Winner Winner right!?!?

Golfing for a GREAT Cause

Dennis & Blake

Dennis & Blake

Yesterday Blake and Cam had the pleasure of playing in a charity golf tournament.  The event was called the 2nd Annual Kim Fournier Charity Golf Tournament and was held at Lochmere Golf Club in Cary.  One of our long-time clients, Chris Fournier, owner of All Star Painting, hosted the event with all proceeds benefits Wake County Hospice.  The super ball shotgun started at 1pm and it was a beautiful day for being outside, especially on the golf course.  Smith & Smith, CPA was proud to be a team sponsor with Blake and Cam playing along with two guests, Dennis Sargent (Managing Attorney at Law Office of Dennis Jay Sargent, Jr. PLLC) and Shane Smith (Lead Singer/Guitarist/Songwriter of The Windsor Oaks Band).

Cam and Shane ready to golf!

The golf tournament included lunch, beverages, prizes, raffles and contests for all of the participants.  After the tournament, all of the participants went to The Big Easy in Cary for dinner and the awards ceremony (no, Team Smith & Smith, CPA didn’t place, but they did have fun and helped raise money for a very worth organization).  Thanks to Chris Fournier for asking Smith & Smith, CPA to participate. Our CPA firm plays in about 4-5 different charity golf tournaments each year.  It’s a wonderful way for us to give back to the community and also enjoy a day out of the office together with friends and clients.  Kudos to Blake for wearing his Smith & Smith, CPA polo shirt!

He also shared some good facts with us about North Carolina and the impact that wine making has on our economy. We look forward to visiting Chatham Hill Winery in downtown Cary very soon for a club social!

If you live in this area, then you are well aware of the International World of Bluegrass festival that is going on in downtown Raleigh right now. I’m so happy to have my mom, Marsha, in town for the event!  She’s downtown Raleigh from now until Sunday enjoying all of the music and festivities.  She went to My Girlfriend’s Closet yesterday and got herself this ADORABLE and very STYLISH denim jacket (so hot for Fall!)  Thanks to Ashley and Lois and all of their staff for being so amazing and helpful. She loved shopping there, just as much as I do!  Stop by to shop and tell them you read Beccasblog.com for 10% of your purchase!  Along with her jacket, she also found some nice pieces of jewelry and a great mini black purse.  I think she did some more shopping too in downtown Cary, like at The Perfect Piece…another favorite!!!!

Banner Elk wedding

We also had a GREAT time at a wedding last weekend in Banner Elk, NC.  A long-time friend of mine got married to his camp-bride.  Ben and Allee Bell ‘tied the knot’, literally, they tied a knot during their wedding ceremony at Arbor Dale Presbyterian Church.   Then we all went back to Holston Presbytery Camp & Retreat Center to celebrate!  It was such a wonderful weekend and a beautiful wedding!  We rented a really cute cabin in that was in between Banner Elk & Boone NC that we found on VRBO.com. Thanks Alex for the cool place to stay!  It worked perfectly for us for a long weekend in the NC mountains!

Then we spent Sunday up at Grandfather Mountain seeing all of the animals, amazing views, swinging bridge, Eagles flying over, lunch at the grill and a true memory-making-paradise weekend!  Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet for the BEAUTIFUL orange jeweled embroidered neckline dress with cutout sleeves from Boston Proper.  It made for perfect fall dress to wear to a wedding!  I’m off next week for a fun vacation to St. Pete Beach in Florida and Disney with my family!  Happy weekend!
