Helpful Visit Doctors Express Urgent Care of Cary

Addison at Doctors Express Urgent Care of Cary

Addison at Doctors Express Urgent Care of Cary

Last week Alicia had to take her middle daughter, Addison, to the doctor for a toe injury.  Addison had been playing outside at a friend’s house when she stumped her toe hard in the grass.  She is a dedicated ballet dancer here in Cary at Cary Ballet Conservatory and needed to be seen right away by a doctor.  Alicia took her to Doctors Express Urgent Care of Cary, who happens to be a client of Smith & Smith, CPA.  Alicia said that her experience there with the staff at Doctors Express Urgent Care of Cary and the doctors was really helpful.  She said that the doctor, Dr. Mele, was very attentive to Addison’s needs and helped them figure out that it was a chipped bone in her toe.  Addison is taking a few weeks off from dancing, but should be better soon.  Then Alicia’s other daughter, Avery, had to go to Doctors Express Urgent Care of Cary for an allergic reaction that she had while working at camp.  Thank goodness for great clients like Doctors Express Urgent Care of Cary to help take care of our employees and their families! If you ever need to see a doctor, that is the place to go!  Owners, John & Lisa Cotter, are super great people and really involved in our community.  Lisa and I are both involved with the Cary Chamber & WBON of Cary together.

Playa de Carmen with the Cary Chamber

Cary Chamber Membership Drive Trip

Cary Chamber Membership Drive Trip

Every year in August, the Cary Chamber of Commerce celebrates their Annual Membership Drive with a rewards trip to an exotic Caribbean location.  They award the top sales people with an all-expense paid trip for two.  Believe it or not, this year marked the 7th trip in a row for Blake & me.  I was proud to serve the Cary Chamber as their Vice-Chair for Member Business Services and that included helping lead the Annual Membership Drive.  We were successful at bringing in over 163 new members to the Cary Chamber and over $250,000 in sponsorships & support!  A job well done!  Thanks to the awesome team who worked hard (even up till the last minute) to make it an amazingly successful drive!

Slice of heaven!

Slice of heaven!

Working with the Cary Chamber has been a huge part of my marketing plan for many years, as I am the Director of Marketing for Smith & Smith, CPA.  It gives me the opportunity to reach out local businesses in the area and get them involved.  It also gives us expose for our CPA firm and has led to lots of new business, both on the small business accounting level and on the personal tax return level.  I am a big supporter of the Cary Chamber and always will be!  So this year, Blake and I headed off to the amazing area of Playa de Carmen, just south of Cancun, Mexico.

Dinner with the group

Dinner with the group

We traveled with a group of 12 from the Cary Chamber and stayed at Secrets Silversands Resort.  What a perfect property and thanks so much to Elaine Smith of E-Destinations, Inc for setting up all of the travel arrangements.  The resort was spectacular and the whole 3-night/4-day trip was simple breathtaking, or as one of the others said, “a slice of heaven”.  We spent time on the trip relaxing by the pool and beach, playing pool games, eating (lots and lots of eating), walking the beach, dining & dancing together at night, and simply enjoying all that Mexico has to offer (so much to do and see in such a short time!)

Project Weekly to ENGAGE Rotary!

Project Weekly to ENGAGE Rotary!

I even took along my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club shirt and wore it while eating by the pool…it’s a challenge that we have going on in our club to ENGAGE yourself in Rotary by wearing a Rotary shirt at least once a week.  The challenge is called “Project Weekly”.  Thanks also to Lois Cozart, owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet (a high-end ladies consignment store in downtown Cary & downtown Apex) for getting me set with some LOVELY dresses & tops for the evening dinners while on the trip!   The Annual Membership Drive is open to ALL Cary Chamber members to participate in… maybe you will join us next year and help grow YOUR business as well as YOUR favorite Chamber of Commerce, the Cary Chamber and win YOURSELF a trip of a lifetime!  Stay tuned for details of next year’s Annual Membership Drive!

Jimmy John’s in Cary in a FLASH!

Trevor delivers lunch from Jimmy John's

Trevor delivers lunch from Jimmy John’s

What is more fun then a day at the office with fresh sandwiches!?!  Yesterday we treated our entire office & families to lunch from Jimmy John’s in Cary (8204 Tryon Wood Drive, Suite 118).  Why Jimmy John’s in Cary you ask? Well, for THREE reasons 1) Their food is good and fresh, 2) They deliver and it is fast, fast, FAST! and 3) our family member (cousin/nephew), Trevor Fillingame, works there as a delivery guy.  He’s getting ready to head back to college for his sophomore year (App State) and his twin brother, Erick, to UNC-Wilmington.  We had a big family dinner the other night and Trevor reminded us that today was his last day working at Jimmy John’s for the summer. So no better day to order lunch!

Thanks Jimmy John’s in Cary for a DELICIOUS lunch and thanks Trevor for a FAST delivery!

Special Rotary Guest and a Bowling Birthday Party

District 7710 Governor Leigh

District 7710 Governor Leigh

I am so honored this year to serve as Club President for the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club.  Last week was a special week as our District 7710 Governor, Leigh Hudson, visited our club, along with his lovely wife, Pug.  Governor Leigh talked to our club about ‘standing up for Rotary’ and shared some of his very personal experiences and stories about Rotary in his life.  We are all very excited about the artwork he had created that portrays a current Rotary club meeting.  Prints of the artwork will be sold as a fundraiser for Ending Polio.  Thank you Governor Leigh for coming to our club to speak and share!  You are welcome to join us any week!

Celebrating with friends

Celebrating with friends

We had a great time last weekend going out to celebrate a very special birthday girl!  Our good friend and fellow Triangle Ladies Power Lunch member, Shelli Dallacqua, invited us all out to a fun birthday bash!  We all gathered at Sparians in North Hills for a fun evening of dinner, drinks, live music and of course, BOWLING!  It was really fun to be out with some of my business lady friends and their husbands.  Thanks to Carrie Peele, owner of Blue Diamond Limo and client to Smith & Smith, CPA for helping put this party together for Shelli!

Social Media Cake

Social Media Cake

Shelli is an expert when it comes to social media and her business, Shelten Media, works with clients to get them ‘into‘ the whole social-media-world.  Check out this really awesome cake that was made just for her!  Blake & I had never been to Sparians, so we really enjoyed the whole experience and look forward to going back again soon. The food, bowling and video games were right up our alley for fun!  You will have to ask Blake who won in bowling!

Women’s Networking HEATING Up!

Triangle Ladies Power Lunch

Triangle Ladies Power Lunch, a cool women’s networking group!

Aside from the massive amounts of rain that we had here in June/July, it has been a really nice summer here in North Carolina.  The temperatures haven’t been too hot and for the most part the humidity has been good and low too.  But I’m always gonna be a girl who is ready for FALL!  The end of summer also means that MORE networking events will kick back into high gear…especially for the women’s networking groups!!  The Triangle Ladies Power Lunch took off for the month of July and had their first meeting this week.  I was pleased to attend with Renee Groom and Jamie Glass as my guests.  Our other table guests included: Vivienne Carosso, Jenny Clements, Kate Phillips, Jeanne Best and Tina Uliano.  It was great to see everyone at TLPL, a really fantastic women’s networking group.

WHU Sisterhood

WHU Sisterhood

Earlier this week I also attended another women’s networking group, the WHU Summer Social & Initiation.  The event was held at the spectacular Hamilton Scot Inn in Cary.  What a jewel of a place!  Almost 50 new sisters were inducted at the event on Tuesday night.  The room was full of all shades of PINK…some from head to toe (that would be you Christine Engelbrecht).  I had a fun time at the event, hanging out with friends, networking with new business ladies, and catching up on the juicy summer details of my girlfriends.

Sharon & Becca

All of the new WHU sisters were given a colorful pink lei and our WHU sisterhood pin.  WHU has fun events planned for September, October, November and December of this year!  WHU is a brand new women’s networking group (and so much more than that too), you can find out more on the website.  Here is a cute picture of me and my super-funny-crazy-talented-loving-compassionate-beautiful-friend, Sharon Galluzzo.  Sharon and I go way back and seriously, no one makes me laugh like this girl.  Don’t we look lovely in our pink!?!?  My adorable friend, Lois Cozart, is also part of WHU and is happy to announce that My Girlfriend’s Closet is having their Summer Clearance Sale going on RIGHT NOW!  Everything is marked down from 10-90% off!  Stop by the Cary store or the Apex store to shop now and wear now (or save it for next summer!)  The lovely blue dress I wore to TLPL was from MGC and is a Trina Turk wrap dress!  Go shopping TODAY!  Tell them you read about their Summer Clearance in Becca’s Blog!  Also check out Dena’s Jewelry Box (a Smith & Smith, CPA client) with her 15% off handmade & unique jewelry sale (use code “HEAT” at checkout)

The 26th Annual Life Experiences Auction & Golf Tournament

Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club members

Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club members

Sunday evening was an event that I look forward to every year.  It was the 26th Annual Harrry H. Montogomery Auction & Golf Tournament for Life Experiences.  The event was held at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary with the “Evening of Experiences” as the theme.  The golf tournament was held today, Monday, August 19th, despite the rainy day weather.  I have attended this event for several years now as my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club is a major sponsor.

Blake, Becca, Tia & Ethan

Blake, Becca, Tia & Ethan

There are seven other Rotary Clubs that also support this event.  My good friend and fellow Cary-Kildaire Rotary club member, Mary Madenspacher, is the Executive Director for Life Experiences, so it is always fun to be there to support her & her team on this big night!  Blake went with me this year and we met up with friends, LeaAnn Schrick, Tia & Ethan Coppus, and Susan & Steve Pruskin.

Check out the RED, WHITE and BLUE picture of Susan, Blake & me together!!! We also saw lots of other friends and I was happy to see that our Cary-Kildaire Rotary club had several members also at the auction.  We had a great time enjoying dinner and also placing several bids on the amazing silent auction items that were spread all over the ballroom.  I tend to be a little aggressive (okay, crazy) when it comes to bidding at silent auctions and well, we were the ‘winner’ of many great items last night!  I was able to get a week of track-out-camp for Trent, along with some neat hair products and tons of great food & restaurant gift cards! YEA!!!!!   We even participated in the LIVE Auction bidding; there were 21 live auction items! Everything from vacation to football tickets!

The program booklet was a really cool fold-out booklet, that was designed & put together by Alphagraphics (Ed LeClair is also a member of Cary-Kildaire Rotary).  Blake and I had a great time sitting at a table with the Bank of NC friends (thanks Tia & LeaAnn).  Life Experiences is a non-profit organization that offers a variety of satisfying work experiences for adults with various disabilities.  If you have read my blog before, then you know I am a huge supporter/cheerleader for Life Experiences and the work that they do.

Our donation baskets

Our donation baskets

Life Experiences operates 5 small businesses that include a bakery with the BEST BROWNIES EVER!  I am always happy to support and be involved with Life Experiences.  Our CPA firm, Smith & Smith, CPA donated a ‘Back-to-School’ gift basket that was full of many of the essentials that kids need when starting back to school.  Blake & I also donated a “Dog-Lovers” basket that included all kinds of cool treats, toys and accessories for any special dog.  Thanks to everyone who came out to support such a fun evening!

Great crowd for the "Evening of Experiences"

I also want to thank Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for donating a really cool “Shopping Experience” for the silent auction that included a “Styling Party” and wine!  Awesome!  Lois helped me pick out the white BCBG Maxazria strapless layered taffeta cocktail dress that I wore last night from her store and had many compliments!  The jewelry I was wearing was also from her store (located in downtown Apex & downtown Cary).  Stop by her stores and tell her you read about her amazing fashions in Beccasblog.

Ready to TEACH, Ready to LEARN!

Ms. Fountain ready to teach!

Ms. Fountain ready to teach!

So this is a personal blog ‘shout out’ for my cousin Jenny Fountain!  She officially started teaching 2nd grade today at a school in South Carolina, Lonnie B. Nelson Elementary School to be exact!!  Last year Jenny, who is now known to her class of 18 students as “Ms. Fountain”, worked at the same school, but in a support role called Right to Intervention Instruction.  This position involved helping with students who faced learning challenges and needed extra attention and encouragement.  This year she has her OWN CLASS, her OWN STUDENTS and her OWN ROOM!  I am sooooo thrilled for her as she has worked hard all summer to get her classroom ready and set for her first day of class.

The students are coming!!!!!

The students are coming!!!!!

She’s had to attend lots of training, seminars and endless classes this summer as a requirement for teaching.  I know she was super ready to meet her students today and start her ‘official’ teaching career.   Jenny studied Early Childhood Education at University of South Carolina and graduated a few years ago (her graduation party was awesome and included a FOOD TRUCK!!!)  I’ve been thinking about her all day and can’t wait to talk to her to see how it went!  Thanks to all of our teachers out there…who give so much of themselves to teach our youth of tomorrow!  Here’s to a great 2013-2014 school year!

Getting Groovy with ShopLocalRaleigh at the Groovy Duck Bakery

Alicia with Beth, owner of Groovy Duck Bakery

Alicia with Beth, owner of Groovy Duck Bakery

This morning was the 4th Friday ShopLocalRaleigh networking social.  The event was held from 8:30am-10:00am at the Groovy Duck Bakery in Raleigh (over near the intersection of Edwards Mill Road and Duraleigh Road).  I asked Alicia, one of the CPAs in our office, to go along with me.  I picked her up around 8:30am and we headed towards the bakery.  Alicia used to work in that part of Raleigh, so she knew exactly where we were going.  There was a good size crowd, about 25-30 people at the social and the space was really nice.

ShopLocalRaleigh friends

We had a chance to mix & mingle as we arrived, while we enjoyed fresh coffee and an assortment of delicious mini-muffins and cinnamon rolls.  The Groovy Duck Bakery serves all kinds of muffins, cakes, cookies, pastries, coffee and much more!  They also have these really cool wooden tables that are curved and fold completely together (hard to explain, you need to go visit just to see the cool table & chair combo).  The owner of the Groovy Duck Bakery, Beth Flynn, sold her bakery in Virginia and moved back to NC a few years ago.

Becca with Greg, owner of Drum for Change

Becca with Greg, owner of Drum for Change

The Groovy Duck Bakery opened earlier this spring in April.  They joined ShopLocalRaleigh as a way to get involved with the local community, especially with other locally owned businesses.  Kim Davis, owner of the Payroll People, is helping to launch the B2B section of ShopLocalRaleigh and made an announcement during the social asking members to write testimonials for each other.  Great idea Kim!   Like all of the ShopLocalRaleigh socials, we gathered in a circle and went around the room to introduce ourselves and tell about our business.  We were also asked to share an embarrassing work moment.  Those stories brought out some really good laughs!  It was great to see some new faces at the social, several new businesses have recently joined ShopLocalRaleigh!

Great turnout!

Great turnout!

I had a nice time catching up with my friend, Greg Whitt, owner of Drum for Change.  He was telling me about his cool event at Lifetime Fitness in Cary tonight with the outdoor yoga event.  Really cool!!!  Alicia and I both enjoyed our experience at the Groovy Duck Bakery and purchased some goodies to bring back with us (the adorable yellow duck cookie was a MUST for both of us!)  I also purchased some of the freshly made chocolate chip cookies to share with Blake & Bob.

ShopLocalRaleigh is getting ready to launch a new t-shirt campaign too…I can’t wait to hear what that is all about!  Want to be involved…then SHOP LOCAL with us at ShopLocalRaleigh!  (Jennifer Martin—we MISSED you this morning!!!!)  And thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet of downtown Apex & downtown Cary for the adorable green summer dress that I wore this morning!  I purchased this dress from the Apex store a few months ago and I just LOVE the fresh green color and tiny white flower print.  Go shop there and tell them you read about their store on Beccasblog.com and receive a discount on your purchase!

Great Things in Cary, NC!

CARY ON for the Cary Chamber

CARY ON for the Cary Chamber

I came back from the Cary Chamber of Commerce Planning Conference last month with a really neat t-shirt in hand.  The Cary Chamber, along with S&A Cherokee, was pleased to announce the 2013-2014 theme of “CARY ON”.  I love this theme & logo as it really represents what a technology town Cary has become, hence the ‘O’ of the word “ON” looks like the START button for a laptop.  Cary was also recently named the Digital Capital of NC for the 2013 eCities of America by Google.  Very Cool!  Check out the new shirts on some of the Cary Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors from our August Board meeting.

Jennifer Kidd

Jennifer Kidd

Also, here is a great Smith & Smith, CPA client, Jennifer Kidd, owner of Kidd Photography, strutting her best GREASE outfit over the weekend at the Koka Booth Grease Sing-A-Long Movie event.  I went to the outdoor movie with my good friend, Lisa-Gray Vick and also took Mark & Trent along too.  We had the pleasure of sitting with Jennifer and her friends.  I think she looked great! The event included a costume contests, singing props and lots of fun! Jennifer is booking for Fall Family portraits and does really great work!  You can reach her through her website here.
