An Awesome Exhibit Show at Fearrington Village!

Fearrington Village for Retreats Resources

Fearrington Village for Retreats Resources

So have you ever been to Fearrington Village!?!?  I’ve heard about it numerous times but had never had the privilege to visit the property.  All of that changed last week when I joined my good friend, Christine Johnson of First Point Management Resources to attend the Retreats Resources 2013 Showcase Roadshow. Christine invited me because she knows that I have had experience in helping to plan Rotary District Conferences and Cary Chamber incentive trips over the past few years.  The NC Triangle Event was held at Fearrington Village, located in Pittsboro, NC.  I had a wonderful time at the event with Christine and the others from her office.    The event started with a Welcome Social at The Roost where we enjoyed live music and a fresh array of local cured meats and local cheeses, plus sweet desserts.  From there we moved to The Barn for the vendor & meeting planner showcase.  I tagged along with Christine & her crew as we talked to different luxury hotels & travel destinations.  A big part of Christine’s job (and First Point Resources) is to book travel & meeting conferences for their association clients.

My undergraduate degree from ECU was in Hospitality Management, so I also enjoy these events very much. There was a silent auction during the vendor expo and all of the proceeds were given to Water To Wine and go towards supporting their mission of providing clean water to people around the world.  The next part of the evening event at Fearrington Village was my favorite…a HUGE & BEAUTIFUL hot air balloon was inflated on the farm and balloon rides (small ones) were offered to all attendees.  I didn’t go up in the balloon, but I had a BLAST watching and taking pictures!  During the balloon viewing/rides, I ran into my friend, Elaine SmithOwner of E-Destinations.  Elaine has been a friend through the Cary Chamber and has planned many of the Cary Chamber Membership Drive Reward Trips over the past few years.  She’s an expert at group travel destinations!

My "winning" Belties picture!

My “winning” Belties picture!

Shortly after the balloon rides we were escorted to dinner at The Garden Terrace, a totally beautiful indoor/outdoor area at Fearrington Village.  Dinner was BEYOND FANTASTIC! Grand Master Chef, Colin Bedford, created the menu that included: crab salad with Avocado Puree, Beef Wellington, Bacon Creamed Corn, Seared Halibut and MORE!  I had the pleasure of meeting Juan Cure, who serves Fearrington Village as their Travel Industry Sales leader during the event.  Juan and his team are very proud of the Fearrington Village Property and gladly answered all of our questions.  We had a chance to see the Belties (the cows on the property) and even took a few pictures for their Facebook Beltie Social Media Contest (too bad I didn’t get my picture submitted in time!  I think it was a winner!) I’d like to say THANK YOU to Suzanne Dawson from The Fairmont in Washington, DC as she was so friendly and very helpful with answering travel questions about DC & the surrounding area.  I think a family trip to DC to see all of the museums is in our near future!  Thanks also to Christine for inviting me to go and as always…to Lois Cozart, Owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet (located in downtown Cary & downtown Apex) for styling me in this unique Joseph Ribkoff dress.  It was perfect for Fearrington Village!  Mentioned Beccasblog.com at My Girlfriend’s Closet and get 10% off your total purchase!

Pig Pickin’ for Scholarships & Humanitarian Projects

Smith & Smith, CPA families at the Pig Pickin'

Smith & Smith, CPA families at the Pig Pickin’

This past Saturday, June 1st, was a very special day!  First of all, my parents celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on SaturdayHappy 40th Mom & Dad!  They will be adventuring in Maine & the Acadia National Park with their kayaks this summer for their anniversary celebration.  Saturday was also my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club’s 27th Annual Pig Pickin’ in the Park!  This event is huge for us and serves as the MAIN FUNDRAISER each year for our club.

Blue Diamond Limo as a Hog Wild Sponsor

Blue Diamond Limo as a Hog Wild Sponsor

We hold the event from 4:30pm-7:00pm at the Senior Center at Bond Park in Cary, NC.  We typically serve anywhere from 500-800 people during those hours and offer both dining-in and to-go meals.  It’s lots of fun, requires lots of planning and preparation from our club months in advance.  One of the biggest challenges we face each year is recruiting new sponsors.  This year I was happy to have one of our Smith & Smith, CPA clients, Blue Diamond Limo & Worldwide Transportation on board as a Hog Wild Sponsor.  I enjoy our relationship so much with Carrie Peele, owner of Blue Diamond, and her #1 go-to-lady, Linda Sellers.  Both Carrie and Linda came by the event and picked up to-go meals for some of their staff and limo drivers.  Thanks so much for the sponsorship Blue Diamond Limo!!!!!

Great Harvest Bread as a Hog Wild Sponsor

Great Harvest Bread as a Hog Wild Sponsor

Another new sponsor was brought on Cary-Kildaire Rotarian, Jerry Kozel, was Great Harvest Bread Company of Cary, NC.  Now if you read my blog, you know that I am very good friends with the owner of GHB, Paige Williams.  Paige and I go way back together as we have been networking & growing our businesses together for years.  I very much admire Paige & her team at GHB for all they do in the community and for how successful they have been with their bakery.  Along with her Hog Wild Sponsorship, Paige also sent a huge basket of their delicious cookies to be sold at the Bake Sale table.  Thanks so much Paige & GHB!  Good job Jerry!

Thanks to all!!!!

Thanks to Alphagraphics for printing this cool banner!

Other special sponsors for the event include Smith & Smith, CPA as a Hog Wild Sponsor and Blake & I once again was agreed to be a Whole Hog Sponsor.  Our whole family came this year and here is a great family picture of us outside enjoying the nice weather on the lawn at the Senior Center.  There were several sets of corn hole boards set-up for playing and a clown doing tricks and balloon art for the kiddos, thank you Mr. Rainbow (also a client of Smith & Smith, CPA).  Dr. Manu’s wife was also offering face painting; the kids’ just love that!  We were very happy to have several of our friends & their families with us from Mark’s preschool.

Mr. Rainbow the Clown

We had plenty of tickets to share with our sponsorships, so Blake also invited several of his friends.  The whole focus of this event is to raise funds for our scholarship and humanitarian projects for the upcoming year.  On average, our club will handout $16,000 in scholarships next year, to both local community college students, as well to graduating high school students who are heading off to 4-year universities.  We will also use another $10,000+ for local projects in our Rotary 7710 District.  We are planning to build/construct/manage a garden at Life Experience with help through a Rotary District Grant, called Project LEGO, and also install outdoor arena lights for The Corral Riding Academy in Cary so that the girls can do therapy and training with the horses during the fall/winter hours after the time change & when it gets dark at 5pm. We’ll also be using funds for humanitarian projects on an International Level (GlobalRun4Water, medical projects in Honduras, etc.)  I’m very excited about all of the projects that our club has planned and for all that we do each year with the funds raised at the Pig Pickin’ in the Park.

Cutting Mary's shirt....

Cutting Mary’s shirt….

Thank you again to all of our wonderful sponsors & supporters!  And here is one funny picture to share…I don’t like t-shirts with a tight neckline…I never have and never will.  So I solved this problem back in my college years by simply cutting out the neck of all my t-shirts.  So I showed up at the Pig Pickin’ on Saturday in my newly cut & manicured t-shirt and was asked by several of my other club members to help with their shirts.  Thankfully one of our club members had a great pair of scissors on hand and I was able to assist. So here is my friend, Mary, trusting me to cut around her neck with a pair of scissors!  Who is next!?!?  Also, thanks to Danny’s BBQ for your service & commitment to good quality BBQ for another year!

Giving, Golf and Graduation

GIVING at The Shepherd's Table Soup Kitchen

GIVING at The Shepherd’s Table Soup Kitchen

Today is all about the Three G’s…. Giving, Golf and Graduation!  So we will start with the first “G”…GIVING.  Blake is a member of The Next Level BNI group.  They meet on Wednesday mornings at 8:00am at The Matthew’s House in downtown Cary.  His group is committed to doing a service project at least once a quarter.  A few weeks ago they volunteered at The Shepherd’s Table Soup Kitchen in downtown Raleigh serving lunch.  Blake went to help, along with several others from his group including Jaimie Kasopsky and Dennis Sargent.  It’s so rewarding to be part of a CPA firm and a BNI group that believes in GIVING back to the community.  Well-done guys!

Matt & Blake at Cary Chabmer GOLF

Matt & Blake at Cary Chabmer GOLF

The next “G” is GOLF.  Earlier this week the Cary Chamber of Commerce had their Annual Member Guest Golf Tournament.  For the past several years, Smith & Smith, CPA has been a committed “Hole Sponsor” for this event.  It’s a nice day for Blake & Cam to get out of the office and play a round of golf at Prestonwood Country Club with some friends, clients and referral partners.  This year their foursome included Matt Arthur and Shane Smith.  The weather started off pretty yucky, but as the day went on, the rain moved out and they had a great time on the course.  Thanks to TrustAtlantic Bank for being the Tournament Sponsor and to all of the other Hole, Beverage, Hole-in-One Car and Specialty Sponsors.  Your commitment to the Cary Chamber goes a LONG WAY!  Also congrats to Cam as he had a pretty good drive on Highlands hole #16 for the “Most Accurate Drive”.

Cam's close GOLF hit

Some of the other golf contests during the tournament included: Longest Drive, Closest-to-Pin and Hole-in-One (a chance to win a CAR sponsored by Hendrick Cary Auto Mall).  The golf game was played in the Superball Format with the team ‘Captain‘ selecting the best tee shot for each hole and all the plays hit from there to the green.  Mulliagns were also sold to teams as a ‘mini-fundraiser’ for those players who needed a second-chance-swing.  Proceeds from the Cary Chamber Member Guest Golf Tournament go towards supporting the funding of the excellent programs that the Cary Chamber offers each month.

GRADUATION with family for Tyler!

GRADUATION with family for Tyler!

The final “G” stands for GRADUATION.  The whole Smith family got together on Tuesday night to take our niece, Dallas Tyler Stephenson, out to dinner.  She’s graduating from high school in just a few more weeks and will be going to Meredith College as a “Meredith Angel”.  We are so proud of her!  She’s got some wonderful college years ahead of her and we know she is going to have a great time.  The kids enjoyed getting their faces painted at dinner too…hence their ‘crazy looks’.

Summer Family Times

Smith family at Longhorn Steakhouse in Apex

Smith family at Longhorn Steakhouse in Apex

Sometimes one of the things that can make you smile the most is getting to see your family.  Especially when it is family members that live far away or ones that you don’t get to see very much.  This past weekend was a fun time for the Smith family as we had cousins home from college and grandparents down to visit from Virginia. Bob’s mother, Joyce (also known a Grandma) came down to visit with her husband, Ray.  They also brought along cousin, Erick, who is helping them this summer while on college break and his twin brother, cousin Trevor, who is also home from college for the summer.  So the whole Smith family went out for dinner on Friday night to Longhorn Steakhouse in Apex at Beaver Creek.  It was great to see everyone!

Beach at Jordan Lake

Beach at Jordan Lake

I also discovered a fun place with the kids on Saturday.  We went to the beach part at Jordan Lake.  Several of the kids and moms from Mark’s preschool class went together for a fun afternoon in the sun!  I’ve been to Jordan Lake lots of times to boat and camp, but this was my first time to the beach area.  We’ll be going back for sure!  Here is a cute picture of the boys and Trent’s friend, Daniel.  The kids had super fun time and played for nearly 4 hours together.  It’s a nice change from the pool and you feel like you are at the beach, minus the 3-hour drive!

Let’s Do 20 for 20 with The Carying Place!

Delancy, April and Becca at The Carying Place 20th Gala Event

Delancy, April and Becca at The Carying Place 20th Gala Event

Last night Blake and I attended the 20th Anniversary Gala Event for The Carying Place. The event was held at the beautiful location, The Oaks of Salem, in Apex, NC.  My good friend, April Manese, is the owner of The Oaks of Salem and was the gracious hostess for the evening.  This was our first time visiting the property and I can easily see why it is a top spot for weddings and corporate events!  The place is simply stunningCatering By Design provided the delicious food and everything was really tasty!

Chef James, Steve Daniels and Blake Smith

Chef James, Steve Daniels and Blake Smith

Steve Daniels from ABC Eyewitness News served as Master of Ceremonies and spoke so highly of The Carying Place and all the work that has been done helping homeless families in the Cary area over the past 20 years. I love this picture of Blake standing with Steve Daniels and Chef James. Milt Douglass, the founder of The Carying Place, was also there last night and shared some very touching words with the crowd.  He started The Carying Place as a way to meet a need (homelessness) in Cary that wasn’t being reached…and now 20 years later nearly 310 families have been helped since 1993!

The Oaks of Salem

The Oaks of Salem

They talked about the program families go through at The Carying Place being a ‘tough love’ program, and truly it is.  They work with families to help them get back on their feet, but also to teach them how to manage their finances, pay their bills, prioritize their needs and be good citizens of society.  Families have to agree to the conditions and are held accountable along the way.  The Carying Place has grown over the years but still serves their main mission of helping bridge the gap between homelessness and permanent housing in Cary and Western Wake County.

April & Becca

April & Becca

I’ve been involved with The Carying Place for many years through many different groups & organizations.  Smith & Smith, CPA has helped provide Christmas gifts to some of the families, WBON of Cary hosted a charity fashion show in March of 2013 with proceeds going to The Carying Place, Blake and I attend their annual fundraising auction (typically held at The Matthew’s House in Cary) and the list goes on.  We saw many friends from The Cary Chamber at the event last night and also several other friends & clients.  The event was held outside on the back patio and even though it was a toasty summer day (it was hot and humid like August!) the big fans kept the air cool and circulating.  Several board members from The Carying Place spoke and shared their stories & experiences.  NC Supreme Court Justice, Mark Martin, was also a guest speaker at the event.  He spoke about Americans reaching out to help others in need and how he hopes we never lose that spirit.

Blake & Becca at The Carying Place 20th Gala Event

Blake & Becca at The Carying Place 20th Gala Event

The Carying Place is honoring their 20th anniversary with a really unique program called “20 for 20”.  They are reaching out to the community asking volunteers to hold their own kind of event and raise support for The Carying Place.  They are hoping to have 20 different & unique events held by the end of the year, thus the 20 events for 20 years title.  So far they have volunteers who have stepped up to host wine tasting dinners, sponsor a 20-mile bike ride, bake sales, and more!  It is going to be really neat to see all of these events come together!  If you are interested in hosting an event, please contact The Carying Place to find out more.  They have very nice packets that will help you plan your event step-by-step so that you can be successful and HAVE FUN along the way!  Event Coach is Wendy Dawson 919-917-5868 or office manager Sameena Rashid 919-462-1800.   Thank you to Lois Cozart of My Girlfreind’s Closet (located in downtown Apex and downtown Cary) for selecting this Ya of Los Angeles long green, one shoulder dress for me to wear.  The green color was fantastic and I had lots of compliments on the gown.

My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary is holding their One Year Anniversary Party this SATURDAY, June 15th with lots of door prizes, give-a-ways, specials and more!  Please go to help them celebrate!  Tell them you read about them in Beccasblog and get 10% off your total purchase!  What a great way to SHOP LOCAL and SUPPORT LOCAL!

Serving as President for Two Years

WBON of Cary Friends

WBON of Cary Friends

This past Wednesday, June 12th, was a bitter-sweet day.  This was my last day of serving as President for WBON of Cary.  I was elected as President back in May of 2011 and ended up serving a two-year term (2011-2012 & 2012-2013).  I’ve had an absolute wonderful time serving & leading this organization, so I am sad to see the term come to end.  But I am also happy to say that I feel like WBON of Cary is being left in great hands with the new Incoming President, Christine Engelbrecht, and her leadership team.  I first got involved with WBON about 7 years ago and have loved the organization ever since.

Becca & Lois of WBON of Cary

Becca & Lois of WBON of Cary

I’ve made some long-lasting friendships, gained lots of new business & clients, heard some fantastic speakers and participated in some really cool community services…all through WBON of Cary.   In the past two years, the group has grown with new members and new businesses.  We’ve changed not only our meeting location but also our monthly meeting day.  And this year WBON of Cary celebrated their 18th birthday!  On Wednesday we celebrated with cupcakes, balloons, horns, Happy Birthday Crowns and of course, the birthday song.  I want to personally thank all of the WBON women who have given their time and served on my board over the past two years.  You all have been wonderful to me and I will always treasure this time & experience.  I will serve WBON of Cary 2013-2014 as Past-President and look forward to still being involved with the group.  I hope to see WBON of Cary grow and thrive for another 18+ years!  And yes,  my adorable green one-shoulder dress is right off the racks at My Girlfriend’s Closet!  Shop there and mention Beccasblog.com for a 10% off total purchase!  Love some MGC!!!!!

Lots of Pink for a Well Heeled U

Well Heeled U Rush Party with friends

Well Heeled U Rush Party with friends

Last night was a really fun event, actually a ‘rush party’ for a new group called Well Heeled U.  This group has been started by four of my friends and I’m really excited for them (Tobi Bowen, Rita Sellers, Cindy Prince and Christine Engelbrecht)!  The event was held downtown Raleigh at The Architect and featured everything pink!  Upon arrival you were greeted by the girls at the door and then got to take a fun picture with lots of PINK props by photographer Steffanie Lafors.  The whole focus of Well Heeled U is “a sorority for grown up girls…their mission is to work as sisters as we make life better, every step of the way”.  The feel like Raleigh is lacking in a sisterhood that provides growth opportunities for diverse and dynamic women.

Signature PINK drink

Signature PINK drink

So welcome Well Heeled U to the Triangle area!  They passed out membership information and even have social events laid out through May 2014!  Each month features a different opportunity and covers a whole array of events from parades to cocktails, wellness days and even a beach retreat in March!  HOW FUN!  I’m looking forward to being a member of Well Heeled U and watching this group grow and engage women in all walks of life.  I went to the event with my good friend, Liz Cantino, Branch Manager for VantageSouth Bank.  We had fun seeing lots of friends from other groups and enjoyed the SIGNATURE PINK drink that was being served by the bartender.  Yum yum!

Working & Building All Day for Others with Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity work crew

Habitat for Humanity work crew

Yesterday was a really amazing day!  Blake and I were able to work all day with Habitat for Humanity at the new build area in Western Wake County.  Habitat is currently building about 6 houses in Apex, NC.  Our work crew arrived around 7:30am and we worked outside all day on a house that is sponsored by Cisco (pretty cool because Smith & Smith, CPA has a very strong relationship with personal tax clients at Cisco).  It had rained really heavy the night before, so the work site was pretty muddy, but we made due by working on top of boards and planks.

Part of our day with Habitat is to involve some of the youth from the Boys & Girls Home of Lake Waccamaw.  One of the projects that several of the Rotary Clubs in our area work together on is called The Summer Enrichment Program.  We alternate years inviting the youth from the Boys & Girls home up for a week and take them around to different businesses, tours and events.  Last year the boys came up and we worked Habitat for Humanity with them.

This year the girls came up and we had a good time working with them yesterday.  We had about six members from our club there to work all day and I was so happy to have Blake along too.  We took a lunch break and enjoyed some delicious pizzas from Anna’s Pizzeria in downtown Apex.  We really enjoy working Habitat together and every time we build together we get to work on a new & different part of a house.  So it’s a great learning experience!  Thanks to Habitat for Humanity for all they do!

Historic Downtown Apex for Peak City Pig Fest

Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club at Peak City Pig Fest

Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club at Peak City Pig Fest

Over the weekend our family attended the Peak City Pig Fest, June 21-22 2013.  The event was held in downtown Apex and is hosted by the Apex Sunrise Rotary Club.  I was signed up to work the Rotary & Information booth from 2-4pm, so we went around 12:30pm to enjoy some of the food and festivities.  This is the second year for the Peak City Pig Fest and it has already grown to a HUGE event!  Historic downtown Apex is perfect for festivals and all of the stores & restaurants on Salem Street were open and welcoming the public in to shop & eat.

The event was FREE and family friendly with more than 15,000 people in attendance!  The Kansas City Barbecue Society, the nations’ leading BBQ sanctioning body, sanctions the Peak City Pig Fest.  Teams come from all over the country to compete for prize money for cooking chicken, ribs, beef brisket and pork.  Judging is conducted by KSBC certified BBQ judges, but there was also The Meat House People’s Choice Competition and awards, which gave the general public the opportunity to taste & vote for their favorites.

Awards include 1st-3rd with $500-$100 in cash prizes.  The event also featured a beer garden, cornhole tournament, vendors, food trucks, games & bounce house area for the kids (along with a really cool hockey court), plus pig races and live music.  The Peak City Pig Fest raises funds to support the community through various causes supported by the Rotary Foundation.  Some of the community organizations supported include the following: Western Wake Crisis Ministry, community crisis & financial aid, helping hand ministries for Apex & Holly Springs, and more.

I had a great time working the Rotary booth with my fellow Cary-Kildaire Rotarian, Kyle Smith.  We helped give out information about the event, made really cute ‘flying pigs’ with kids and also gave out information about all of the Rotary Club meetings in our Rotary District 7710.  My family had a fun time too!  Thanks to Apex Sunrise Rotary Club for putting on such a fantastic event!  I can’t wait till next year!  The boys really loved getting their picture made with the Pig Mascot from Backyard Bistro.  They also LOVED the shaved ice cream from one of the food trucks too!!!
