Carolinas’ PETS for Leadership Training

Leadership Training with Rotary Carolina PETS

leadership training with Rotary Carolina PETS

A few weeks ago I had a wonderful experience attending Rotary Carolinas’ PETS.  The event stands for President Elect Training, where Rotarians from North and South Carolina Rotary Clubs gather together for a leadership training seminar.  Those attending represent; President Elects, President Nominees, District Governors, Assistant District Governors, and other Rotary leaders.  I attended Carolinas’ PETS last year as my club, Cary-Kildaire, President-Nominee and really enjoyed the leadership training classes.  I went on Thursday this year for the two afternoon classes and stayed until Saturday.  The event schedule was very busy and packed with great classes, speakers and networking socials.

RI President Ron Burton 2013-2014

RI President Ron Burton 2013-2014

The leadership training was held in Greensboro, NC and the theme for the 2013-2014 Rotary Year is “Engage Rotary Change Lives”.   One of the highlights for me during the whole weekend was to get to meet Ron Burton, Rotary International President 2013-2014 from Norman, Oklahoma.  He spoke at the breakfast on Saturday morning and stayed afterwards to greet Rotarians.  Here is a picture of me with Ron Burton and my good friend Eleni Steadman (Assistant-District Governor for RD 7710, my club’s DG!)  I had a great time too seeing other Rotarian friends from our District and from across the state.

I will be Club President on July 1 and I’m looking forward to a great year with my club!  More pictures below from the Rotary leadership training weekend.

Generations with WBON of Cary

Tim Moore with WBON member Wendy Mallon

Tim Moore with WBON member Wendy Mallon

WBON of Cary hosted their monthly meeting yesterday on Wednesday, April 10th.  The speaker was Tim Moore and his topic was “Selling Across the Generations”, which focused on the different buying powers, styles and loyalties of the different generations.  I had heard Tim give this presentation before, so I knew the ladies of WBON were in for a treat!  Tim is a fantastic speaker and certainly delivers a very engaging and informative presentation.  I had to slip back to the office right after he started talking (blame it on a busy tax season if you must), but I heard WONDERFUL things about the rest of the meeting from some friends, so THANK YOU Tim Moore for including WBON of Cary on your speaking schedule this year!

Becca and Deidre of WBON of Cary

Becca and Deidre of WBON of Cary

It was wonderful to see so many friends at WBON yesterday and we missed those who weren’t able to attend.  My good friend, (and Past-President for WBON) Deidre Hughey, was there and WOW, it was soooooo good to see her!  Deidre was President of WBON a few years ago and we really had a good time when she was the ‘head-honcho’.  She is a Personal Empowerment Speaker and her topic is “Reset Your Life”.  Here is a great picture of me with Deidre, so great to see you and glad to have you back as a member of WBON!

Thanks Kim Davis for the tax goodie bags!

Thanks Kim Davis for the tax goodie bags!

I was also pleased to see my sweet friend, Kim Davis, of The Payroll People, at WBON of Cary and she was kind enough to bring these great little ‘tax survival’ kits for everyone in our office.  Kim is so thoughtful and these little bags included some tasty goodies as well as some headache medicine, because the closer and closer to TAX DAY our headaches get bigger and bigger!  Thanks so much for thinking of us Kim!  And THANKS to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for the beautiful dress I wore to WBON yesterday.  It was from her store and the brand was Romeo & Juliet Couture, with a belt from Ann Taylor and shoes from BCBG (those were some HIGH SHOES!!).

MGC is doing their FIRST EVER “Consignment Shopping Shop Hop” this Saturday!  It’s a day for you and your girlfriends to spend shopping around town, but without all the driving!  Such a cool idea! They will be stopping at several different stores around town and will shop from 9am till 5pm!  That is my kind of shopping day!  There will also be door prizes, giveaways and other cool treats on the shopping bus.  Contact them TODAY if you want to go!   I hate to not be able to go— so hoping I can make the next shop-hop with them!  Thanks Lois!

A Delicious catered lunch for Tax Time!

Catered Lunch from The Matthew's House with Becca & Brenda

Catered Lunch from The Matthew’s House with Becca & Brenda

Everybody that has come in the office this week has been asking us if we are living on caffeine, coffee and sugar…and well, that is about right.  However, we did have a very delicious and HEALTHY catered lunch that was delivered to us yesterday from The Matthew’s House in downtown CaryThe Matthew’s House has been a client of Smith & Smith, CPA now for a few years and we really enjoy our relationship with them.  Not only is it a beautiful facility located right in the HEART of downtown Cary, (great for weddings, corporate events and meetings) but they also offer catered lunch (breakfast & dinner as well) to clients in and around town!  Blake’s BNI networking group (The Next Level) meets there on Wednesday mornings and I also attend several events there each month.  Such a beautiful place!  Brenda Steen, Director of Sales and Marketing, for The Matthew’s House, called me earlier in the week to see if they could bring us a catered lunch on Thursday and OF COURSE we were very excited (and appreciative) to accept the offer!

Amazing food!!!!

Amazing food!!!!

I requested a ‘HEALTHY LUNCH’ and they really did deliver!  The chef at The Matthew’s House is amazing and our catered lunch included: a fresh fruit bowl of strawberries and mixed melons, seasoned grilled chicken breast, pasta salad (made with olive oil, not mayonnaise) and homemade chocolate & peanut butter brownies (those were for Bob and the boys and their SWEETTOOTH!)  Our whole office really enjoyed the catered lunch and Brenda shared with me that a major part of their marketing plan is offering free catered lunch on Thursdays to local businesses.

If you would like to take advantage of this offer for your office, please contact Brenda (919-632-4713) or me (Becca@smithandsmithcpa.com).  Please tell her that you saw this in my blog and she will gladly bring your office a catered lunch on a Thursday!  You can’t beat that deal!  Keep The Matthew’s House in mind too as a great meeting space location, they would love to have your business.  And THANK YOU to My Girlfriend’s Closet of downtown Cary & Apex for the beautiful white silk ruffle front summer tank that I wore to work yesterday.  Perfect for summer and all occasions!

Lynnwood Grill and Other Goodies

Well, Tax Day 2013 has come and gone, WHEW, the hours were long and the final few days were intense, but we gave it our all and came out on top!  Hope you got your taxes filed on time (or at least got your extension put in).  Let’s all take a deep breath now and take time to get outside to enjoy this lovely Spring weather (and pollen…YUCK)!  Speaking of Spring weather, I had a chance over the weekend to hangout with some of my girlfriends from the Cary Chamber.

We went to Lynnwood Grill over in north Raleigh to celebrate Megan’s birthday.  What a cool place!  Lynnwood Grill on Urbanspoon They have amazing outdoor patios, both downstairs and upstairs!  We gathered on the upper deck area to enjoy drinks and appetizers.  While I didn’t get a chance to eat dinner, I did take a peek at their menu and it looks delicious!  I will be back to eat and to enjoy the upper deck again!  I think Megan had a good time with her friends and it’s always nice to celebrate a birthday with your loved ones.  Thanks to Lois at My Girlfriend’s Closet for the cute one-shoulder animal print top by Hourglass Lilly that I wore to the celebration. Great top for the evening!

Thank you again to the many new clients and to our returning clients, we sure do appreciate your business!  We really did enjoy all of the tax time treats and goodies and honestly, our clients are so generous!  Check out more of the great gifts below.

Springtime Networking

Heidi and Becca

Heidi and Becca

Wonderful women!!!  That is the best way to describe the ladies at the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch yesterday!  It was great to see everyone and I had a nice table of ladies that included: Heidi Harris of Home Sweet Heidi of Allen Tate Realty, Panama of Art Works, Elizabeth Blanton of Carolina Auto Spa, Amy Gretenstein of PrimePay, Sarah Benken of Triangle Other Woman, Carrie Burr of Lia Sophia.  Heidi and I shared my Smith & Smith, CPA booth space and had a fun time talking with ladies as they arrived.  Heidi had her WickChick candles out and gave me a few to take home (LOVE THEM).  Thanks so much to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for this BEAUTIFUL springtime yellow dress by BCBGMaxazria. I had so many compliments on it and Lois has TONS of great spring & summer dresses at their stores now!  Get to shopping!

Presenting the check for Pretty in Pink

Presenting the check for Pretty in Pink

Before the speaker came to the stage, Carrie Peele (hostess of the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch) called the SHE-RO (female hero) to the stage and together they presented Pretty In Pink with a check for over $3,000 that has been raised through rentals of the Pink Limo (offered by Blue Diamond Limo).  The speaker yesterday was Sheree Mann, CEO of The Right Plan.  Sheree spoke about her childhood life being from Jamica and moving to Canada at an early age.  She even had her mom there to hear her speak (though her mom didn’t know it until Sheree as introduced!)  One of my favorite things that Sheree mentioned was to “Embrace Your Crazy” and when you face tough times, to remember that you have a CJCG (Crazy Jamaican Canadian Girlfriend) to count on.

Dr. Kim and Sidney

Dr. Kim and Sidney

During the early open-networking part, I had a wonderful time talking to Dr. Kim Rocha and Sidney Troidl.  Both of these ladies work & represent In His Name, a local store (also online) that provides a beautiful selection of religious gifts, Catholic books and many other products.  They have recently joined the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch as a vendor and are quickly making friends.

Becca and Marguerite

I had a chance to talk with the storeowner, Marguerite Gibbons.  She is a wonderful lady who has a big heart for so many!  She was sharing with me a story about her granddaughter getting to recently meet the new Pope of the Catholic Church!  How cool is that!?!?  Ms. Marguerite was very generous and gave me a lovely new cross bracelet that is very trendy and has purple & pink thread and silver beads (sold on their website for only $9.99).  I truly love it! I’m wearing it in the picture with her!  Thank you so much!  Please check out their store too!  Carrie recently became a grandmother and purchased several adorable things from In His Name for her new grandbaby!

Time to Celebrate…Angus Barn Style!

Celebrating at the Angus Barn

Celebrating at the Angus Barn

Every year at the end of Tax Season, our office, Smith & Smith, CPA, takes a night together to celebrate.  We’ve worked long hours and long days since the end of late January, so a night out to celebrate is one that we all really looking forward to.  It’s a chance to take some time away from the office together and have a very relaxing and enjoyable evening.  For the past few years we have been celebrating together at the Angus Barn in Raleigh, NC.  This year, six of us celebrated at Angus Barn (pictured at left).  Cam and his family celebrated at Longhorn Steakhouse in Apex, NC.

Becca and Van

Becca and Van

I love going to Angus Barn.  The owner, Van Eure, has been a dear friend and role model for me since my early college years at East Carolina University.  Van stopped by our table during the evening and it was wonderful as always to see her!  She’s such a kind and giving person and really goes out of her way to make sure that every single guest has a wonderful experience and visit at the Angus Barn.  This was the first year for Alicia Angell and her husband, John, to join us for our tax celebration.  Alicia joined Smith & Smith, CPA back in late 2012 and jumped right into a very busy tax season.  We had a great time at dinner talking  and getting to know John better.  We enjoyed pre-dinner drinks from the Wild Turkey Lounge upstairs at the Angus Barn, and of course indulged on the famous cheese & crackers appetizers.

Lobster and Filet

Lobster and Filet

For dinner we were treated to delicious rib appetizers and all of our meals were prepared perfectly.  I had the filet and shrimp, while Alicia and Sharon had the prime rib with shrimp.  Bob, Blake and John all had steak plus Bob and Blake enjoyed HUGE lobster tails!  We’ve always said for years that going to the Angus Barn isn’t just about the food, though the food is amazing, but it’s also about the experience. Angus Barn on Urbanspoon

Pre-dinner drinks

The Angus Barn alone is just very majestic and grand in its own way.  We love the feeling of the ‘rustic elegance’ and the captivating interior design.  We love looking at all of the antique artifacts and military awards, such as the Purple Heart award that hangs in the front foyer lobby area.  I also love the gift shop that holds some of the coolest and most unique gifts!  I always get my mom a pound cake candle, as it makes a very nice early Mother’s Day gift!

Alicia and her creme brulee

Alicia and her creme brulee

Oh, and I MUST mention the desserts!  No matter how much I eat or drink, I always, always, always have to save room for dessert at the Angus Barn!!  I’ve been a ‘blackberry cobbler’ kind-of-girl my whole life…blackberry cobbler takes me back to my childhood days growing up in Eastern Tennessee and eating the best blackberry cobbler on earth!  I love the cobbler at the Angus Barn and couldn’t wait for dessert time!  Alicia and Sharon also ordered dessert, they enjoyed the crème brulee and it looked so delicious too.  Alicia tried to get me to have a bite of hers, but I just couldn’t cheat on my blackberry pie (it also comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top).

Becca with her blackberry cobbler

Becca with her blackberry cobbler

We also had several cups of hot coffee that were served in the famous Angus Barn red coffee mug.  Our server, Patrick and his assistant-server, Alta, were both amazing and very attentive to our dining needs.  Blake and I also had a chance to enjoy drinks from the service bar right near our seats, and the bartender was kind enough to service me a Flirt-Tini (ohhhh it was soooo good and really fun to watch her make it) and Blake a pilsner beer.  Thank you Van for treating us so well!  And thank you to My Girlfriend’s Closet for this beautiful animal print & gold buckle dress!  I had plenty of room in it all night for eating!!!  The coral bubble necklace was a great styling touch too, thank you Bethany for that idea!

So there is our celebration dinner.  We had a very successful tax season and are always grateful to our many tax clients and referral partners.   It is a pleasure doing business with people that you admire and trust.  We truly value every single client and do our absolute best to make sure that every client is taken care of in a timely manner.  Thank you for helping make Smith & Smith, CPA a successful small business in Cary, NC!  Happy Weekend!!!!

Superpower for Habitat for Humanity

Superheros for the GRCVB

Superheros for the GRCVB

So tell me…what goes together better than superheroes and Habitat for Humanity?  Nothing really, right?  Last Thursday I had a wonderful encounter with both SUPERHEROES and Habitat for Humanity and it was an experience like no other!  The superhero part happened during the Cary Chamber Business of Women luncheon.  The speaker was Malinda Harrell of the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau.  Her topic was “Raleigh is No Smallville” and she described herself as a SUPERHERO with the superhero power of being a “CONNECTOR”.  She was so funny and very entertaining.  She entertained the group of Cary Chamber ladies with a presentation on how the GRCVB works to bring conferences and groups to Wake County for all types of events and purposes. Here is a picture of Malinda, me, Dr. Heather Sefried and Susan Pruskin after the luncheon…and yes…Dr. Sefried is indeed wearing Malinda’s Superhero blue cape!

Thursday evening was a wonderful inaugural event for Habitat for Humanity called “Passport to Habitat Home Tour & Party of Western Wake”.  I was invited earlier this year to join this planning committee by Chad Griffith (a strong referral partner for Smith & Smith, CPA).   Our committee worked together to make this very unique and creative event happen, all from an idea to reality in just a few months!  The goal was to bring awareness about Habitat for Humanity home builds going on in Western Wake County.

Photo fun with ReStore items!

Photo fun with ReStore items!

The bus tours included a visit to Wickham Place neighborhood of Cary (a Habitat community).  We were invited to tour several of the homes and talk with the homeowners.  I really enjoyed the tour!  The party was after the tour was held at the Cary ReStore (a place that sells gently used and new building supplies & materials).  We had tons of great food, live music, a creative photo booth, and donation wine baskets that were raffled off as prizes.  I really enjoyed working on this event, made some fun friends along the way, picked up some clients for Smith & Smith, CPA and deepened my love for Habitat for Humanity.  I’d like to personally thank the committee Co-Chairs, Karen Swoboda and Michelle Pavliv for their hard work and leadership!  Thanks also to Chad for getting me involved!  Looking forward to the event next year!

Happy toes!

Happy toes!

And on a personal shout-out…thanks to Debra Ketcham of Nirvelli Day Spa for the most amazing mani/pedi!  Debra took awesome care of me (my toes and nails to be exact) and I enjoyed the time with her relaxing and talking about all things in life!  Check out my toes (yes, I know they are tiny and plump!)  Debra is great and Nirvelli Day Spa is owned by my dear friend, Dr. Heather Sefried (wearing the superhero cape up top) and her husband, Dave.  Check them out in Cary!  They offer all kinds of wonderful services!  And as always, thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet of downtown Cary & downtown Apex for the lovely tops!  Great SPRING shirts and dresses at both locations!!!!!!

Pretty In Pink and Hospice of Wake County

Lacie and Blake

Lacie and Blake

Today’s blog topic is Tattoos and Hospice…once again a title that makes you stop and wonder how they go together right?  The tattoo part represents a fantastic fundraiser event for Pretty In Pink that Blake and I attended last week.  The fundraiser was held at Phoenix Tattoo, a client of Smith & Smith, CPA, located in downtown Raleigh.  The owner, Lacie Frain, personally invited Blake and me to attend.  The breast cancer benefit was in memory of Val Helton.  The Helton family has also been a long time client of Smith & Smith, CPA and it was really nice to see Shawn Helton at the event.

Quilt by Lacie Frain

Quilt by Lacie Frain

Phoenix Tattoo was a great place for the fundraiser and the party featured a live DJ, refreshments and raffle prizes.  The walls were decorated with framed art by some of the tattoo artists and one of the items up for auction was this really awesome quilt, handmade by Lacie Frain herself (so not only is Lacie a talented tattoo artist, but also good with quilting and other crafts).  Blake and I ended up being the top bidder on the quilt, so we’ll be getting it next week YEA!  Phoenix Tattoo is located off of Hillsborough Street and offers custom tattooing and welcomes clients by appointments and walk-ins.  They have tons and tons of tattoo books to look through (some will blow your mind!) as well as a Art Gallery inside the studio. I’m not sure on an exact figure, but last I heard from Lacie they had raised over $1,500 for Pretty In Pink!  I’m sure that number was higher by the time the event ended later in the night.   Thanks to all the Pretty In Pink does for breast cancer survivors in and around this area.

Hospice of Wake County tour

Hospice of Wake County tour

Earlier in the week I joined 18 other women from the Cary Women’s Giving Network (part of the Cary Community Foundation) for a tour of Hospice of Wake County.  This was a lunch & learn event with a tour of the facility, and the opportunity tot learn about the ongoing efforts on behalf of families of Wake County.  The Hospice of Wake County facility was built three years ago and houses 20 rooms, 300+ staff, 400+ volunteers, plus an on-site grief center that is open to the public.

hospHospice of Wake County was uniquely founded over 35 years ago by a physician and is unique it was formed strictly to meet community needs and is a non-profit organization.  The staff is very proud of the fact that since 1979 a patient has never been turned away because of financial need.  I can honestly say that Hospice is a very caring place and that they focus on helping individuals and families deal with the final end of life stages.  God Bless the Hospice workers & volunteers.  Thank you Sarah Perkins of the Cary Women’s Giving Network for setting up this lunch & learn experience for us with Hospice of Wake County!

Travinia, Celebrations, Hockey, Cary Chamber and MORE!

Travinia with Wendy & ice sculpture

Travinia with Wendy

Last week was the One-Year Anniversary Party for Travinia Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar in Cary, NC.  Blake and I were invited to the party through Cary Chamber membership by Christine Stine, Assistant GM & Catering Sales for Travinia.  The party was held on the outside patio (it was a PERFECT night) and included wine & appetizers.  Information was available for learning about having a perfect party with catered and private dining from Travinia.  They offered handpicked wines for tasting and we enjoyed them while sitting around the fire pits networking with others.  A beautiful ice sculpture was on display!

I had a lovely time meeting Wendy Ruocco, Director of Catering Operations. Wendy was in town from Lexington, SC to help with the anniversary celebration party.  Ira Freedman, General Manager, was also at the party and greeted guests as they arrived.  Travinia has added so much to the Cary/Morrisville area and is a huge part of the Park West Village Shopping CenterTravinia makes it easy to host a party and offers off premise catering, carryout & delivery, family style dining, limited menus and private dining.  They currently have locations in South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, and Virginia.

Girl Night dinner at Travinia

Girl Night dinner at Travinia

WBON of Cary has hosted several of our monthly board meetings in their private dining room and my group of girlfriends had our ‘girl night’ dinner party there this past weekend.   We took in a ‘celebration‘ strawberry cheesecake with nine lit candles and took turns blowing out the candles as we passed it around and told what we were celebrating (everything from a birthday last week to earning a CPA license.)   The food is always amazing and the atmosphere makes you feel like you are in another place! I’m all about their patio & fire pits!!!! Thanks Ira, Wendy and Christine for having Travinia so involved with Cary, especially with the Cary Chamber too!

Summit for Cary

Summit for Cary

Speaking of the Cary Chamber, last week was the Eye Opener Breakfast with guest speaker, Jeff Ulma, Planning Director for the Town of Cary.  Jeff discussed the Imagine Cary plan that is in the beginning phases.  The Town of Cary is holding a “SUMMIT ON THE FUTURE” this week on Thursday, May 2nd.  The event is free, but RSVP is required.  This summit is an opportunity for the public to get involved with creating Cary’s new community plan and shaping the future of Cary.  They currently have around 900 people signed up to attend!  It’s gonna be HUGE and great for Cary.  I know several people that will be attending.

Following Jeff’s presentation, the Cary Chamber Membership Drive…BONANZA had a reporting session meeting.  The Membership Drive 2013 is going well and we are brining in new members!  Everyone on the BONANZA drive is working hard to help recruit membership and sponsorships.  It’s a great time to be involved in Cary…make sure you are a Cary Chamber member!  Here is a picture of some of the BONANZA membership drive leaders.  We all had a great time a few weeks ago gathering at Travinia for a reporting session, too.

And last but not least, Alicia went with her mom to the last Carolina Hurricanes Hockey game.  I won a pair of tickets at the Cary Chamber Business of Women and wasn’t able to attend the game that night, so I gave them to Alicia and she took her mom for the first time ever!  The seats were excellent (of course!  Thank you Cary Chamber!) and they had a fun time eating, drinking and watching the game!  Go Canes!  Better luck next season….  I must say THANK YOU to Lois and Bethany at My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary & Apex for the lovely navy blue & white striped dress from Ann Taylor that I wore to the Cary Chamber events and for the dark blue beaded emblessished top from Boston Proper.  They have a HUGE selection of summer dresses, tops & pants!  Go check them out and tell them Becca sent you shopping!  And stop by Travinia for a drink & bite to eat too!
