ShopLocalRaleigh Ready to Work for YOU in 2013

ShopLocalRaleigh Annual Meeting

shoplocalraleigh Annual Meeting

Last week I attended the ShopLocalRaleigh Annual Meeting & Celebration.  The breakfast meeting was held at The Irregardless Café & Catering location in downtown Raleigh.  I got involved with ShopLocalRaleigh ealier this year, and I’m really excited about what this organization has to offer.  There was a nice large attendance for the meeting and the food was delicious.  I met my friend, Kim Davis, there along with a my friend-guest, Carla (from the Cary Community Foundation).

It was great to see some other familiar faces in the crowd too, including Greg Whitt of Drum for Change, Bess Shirley of The Globetrotters, Brenda Steen from The Matthew’s House, and Robin Foster of Dazzle & Lace.  The meeting was very informative and highlighted many of the things/works that ShopLocalRaleigh is doing to really propel this organization forward.  Jennifer Martin, Executive Director for ShopLocalRaleigh, ran a majority of the meeting and presented some really fascinating statistics about how shopping local can really boost the community & local economy.  For example, Raleigh recently received an accolade for being the #8 Best City for Women Entrepreneurs!

ShopLocalRaleigh has been around for 4-years and gets over 9000+ hits on its website on a monthly basis.  Some of their cool promotional events throughout the year include: Brewgaloo, ShopLocalRaleigh videos, Celebrate Your Independence, Local Bucks, Locavore, Fashion/Boutique Sale and many more!  Check out this cool picture of Kim Davis holding up a shirt she won from the Brewgaloo 2012 event.  They expected about 1,800 people at the inaugural event last year and actually had over 4,000 attend!  Brewgaloo 2013 will be held on April 27th and will be bigger and better than last year. The Brewgaloo event brings together local North Carolina breweries and local food trucks, plus entertainment from local bands.  It’s a fun day for all!

And as always, thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for the black & white abstract Donna Morgan dress.  Looking foward to the next ShopLocalRaleigh event!

Shoes, Charity and Fashion!

Dreaming of shoes!!!!

Dreaming of shoes!!!!

So listen up, I have to tell you about this crazy-awesome-don’t-wanna-miss-event that is coming up next week.  It is called “Fashion with a Soul” and it’s the WBON of Cary Annual Charity Fashion Show Fundraiser. I can’t even remember
how many years that WBON has been holding this annual event, but it just keeps getting better and better every year, and this year is no exception!  The Charity of Choice for WBON this year is The Carying Place.  I totally adore The Carying Place and all the work they do there to help those who are less fortunate in our community.

All of the proceeds and funds raised at this event will go directly to The Carying Place.  The event is going to be held on Wednesday, March 13th at Tony’s Oyster Bar in Cary, NC.  The doors will open at 11:30am and will start with a ‘fashion correspondents greeting’, networking, lunch and a few other fun surprises!  We have a whole selection of fantastic shoes that will be used as raffle prizes, you can buy raffle tickets at the door for only $10! Many thanks to Kohl’s of Cary, My Girlfriend’s Closet and all of the fashion show sponsors, WBON Board members and volunteers who are working hard to make this event a huge success.

Check out the video below too.  It’s going to be an awesome time and you WANT to be there!  Tickets are only $20 and that includes lunch, plus the fashion show and awesome entertainment!  More on the website and please RSVP in advance.

The Carying Place Fashion for the SOUL and the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary!

WBON Annual Charity Fashion Show

WBON Annual Charity Fashion Show

Yesterday was a crazy busy day!  It was the WBON of Cary Annual Charity Fashion Show & Fundraiser.  Proceeds from the event benefited The Carying Place and we were able to raise around $1,100 for the organization!!!  The fashion show was so much fun and we drew a crowd of over 100 people!  This year we hosted the event at Tony’s Oyster Bar in Cary and worked with fashions from Kohl’s of Cary and My Girlfriend’s Closet of downtown Cary & downtown Apex.

Other sponsors for the event included WBON members, who sponsored different fashions in the show, as well as Foot Solutions of Raleigh , who sponsored the auction shoe tables.  The fashion models were women from our very own WBON group and even some of their employees and children.  It was really fun to see some of the children in the fashion show, especially when they walked out with their moms onto the runway!  Everyone was greeted at the door where they had an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for the 30+ pairs of CRAZY-FUN-SHOES and handbags that were displayed around the room.  Guests were also invited to ‘walk the red carpet’ and have their picture taken in front of the cool WBON banner (thanks to Steffanie Lafors of A Photographic Memory by Steffanie for taking all of the pictures for the event!)

Every attendee was given a greeting card with a shoe on the front and that was used to direct them to their table.  We later used the cards to write notes of encouragement & support to women at The Carying Place.  One of my favorite things about the whole fashion show was to see how many women from other networking groups were there to support The Carying Place and us!

The fashion show was broken into two different parts and we had a little intermission in the middle where we heard from Kohl’s, The Carying Place, and My Girlfriend’s Closet. Our Kohl’s rep was Marina Rad, and she talked about the charity work that Kohl’s does in the community through their employees.  The Carying Place ladies shared their story and gave some really inspiring stories about women and children who have benefited from the works & support that is offered by The Carying PlaceLois Cozart, owner of My Girlfriend’s Closet, also shared about her store and some of their events this summer.

Some WBON volunteers took the opportunity to sell more raffle tickets during the intermission and it was “FINAL CALL” for all shoe tickets.  We did a few ‘shoe raffle’ before the second part of the fashion show started back up and then gave away the rest of the shoes at the end of the meeting.  Thankfully I was the lucky winner of two fabulous pairs!  I can’t thank all of the ladies enough who helped put this event together.  I am so proud of this wonderful group of women!  And thanks to Lois & My Girlfriend’s Closet for my awesome dress by Muse!

After the fashion show, I came back to the office for the rest of the afternoon.  The Cary Chamber of Commerce was holding their March Business After Hours at the Triangle Aquatic Center, over behind Cary Towne Center Mall.  I am helping lead the Cary Chamber Membership Drive this year, so it was really encouraging to see several new members attending the Business After Hours.  Doherty’s Irish Pub provided the delicious food, just in time for the St. Patrick’s Day spirit!  I was the LUCKY winner of the grand prize drawing…an Annual Family Membership Pass to the Triangle Aquatic CenterSUPER COOL!  Here is a picture of me with Ronnie Roach, Director of Business Development and J.P. Lefever, Event Manager.  The TAC is an amazing place and I remember when Mike Curran was getting the TAC started many years ago! It’s so rewarding to see his dream in action and to see how many kids & families enjoy coming there to swim, complete and be active!

Parties and Celebrations in March!

Persian New Year

Persian New Year

Over the weekend Blake and I had the chance to attend our first ever Persian New Year Celebration.  Friends & clients of ours at Smith & Smith, CPA, Beth Dehghan and Vaji Yegani, (owners of Village Cleaners and Founder of WomenNC.org) invited us to their lovely home to celebrate with them.  We had a fantastic time and saw lots of other friends at the party.  Here is a picture of Christine Engelbrecht, me, Lois Cozart and Beth Dehghan.  The four of us do lots of networking and community events together in Wake County.  I love these ladies!  Thanks to Lois for the dress I am wearing!  It’s right off the rack at her store, My Girlfriend’s Closet!

Learning about the NoRuz table

Learning about the NoRuz table

We had a chance to learn about The Festival of NoRuz (meaning The New Day) for the Persian/Iranian New Year that is celebrated on the Northward Equinox, usually on March 21st.  Beth and Vaji had a beautiful table set-up in the center of the room for the celebration and Vaji & his brother-in-law took time to explain the table and it’s meaning to us (seven items on the table that start with the letter ‘S’ in the Iranian language). Here is a picture of Vaji explaining the table.  It was beautiful and my favorite part was the bowl of goldfish right in the middle.  There was plenty of delicious food and drinks and we especially loved the Iranian music that was playing during the evening.

With Kitty at the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch

Last week I also attended the Triangle Ladies Power luncheon (as I do every month) and the speaker was Kitty Kinnin of 100.7 The River (local radio station).  Kitty was a delightful speaker and she shared about her life and her experiences in radio and the music world.  She spoke about her son, Lucas, her true pride and joy!  Her story started in Miami and went to Colorado, Raleigh, Wilmington, and back to Raleigh.  My favorite thing that she said was “to always smile, it makes it all better”.  Here is a picture of me with Kitty Kinnin, along with Eleni Steadman of BJ’s Wholesale Membership Club, and Maureen Etoroma of First Travel Alliance.  Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet (located in downtown Cary and downtown Apex) for the lovely orange silk spring tunic top.  I loved wearing it and had lots of compliments!

 Tigers, Tape, and Tickets!

Master Rondy presents to CCC Biz of Women

Master Rondy presents to CCC Biz of Women

So this blog is going to be a mix of many random things…should be interesting!  Last week at the Cary Chamber Business of Women luncheon, we had the opportunity to hear from Master Rondy of White Tiger Taekwondo.  Master Rondy has been a client of Smith & Smith, CPA for many years, and really is an amazing woman!  She’s been recognized for her work in the martial arts field and continues to win awards, accolades and honors for her talented skills.  She shared with us a really cool presentation about her background and her career in the martial arts, along with sharing about her cool group called Lady Tigers.  Thanks for sharing your knowledge (and killer martial arts skills) with us Master Rondy! Our oldest son, Trent, will be taking classes at White Tiger in a few weeks, he is sooooooooooooo excited!

100_9211I had a sweet gift come to the office last week…my dear friend, Paige Williams, owner of Great Harvest Bread Co. in Cary, came by the office to see me.  Paige and I have been friends for many years, and we’ve networked all across Wake County together!  She brought me the most adorable high-heel shoe tape dispenser!  I’ve been giving these away for months as door prizes at the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch, but had yet to purchase one for myself!  To say that I love it would be an understatement!  Thanks so much Paige for thinking of me!  You know a friend knows you well when they bring you a tape dispenser that is a miniature high-heel leopard print shoe!  Let me know if you need anything taped and I will gladly assist you!  Also go by Great Harvest Bread to see their delicious Easter Goodies (I’m a huge fan myself of their oh-so-cute BUNNY BREAD).

PINK in concert with friends

PINK in concert with friends

I checked something off of my ‘bucket list’ a few weeks ago too…I went to see PINK in concert.  You may scoff at that, but just imagine getting to see one of your most favorite music artist in concert live, and well, PINK is top of that list for me.  Back in the Fall of 2012, I purchased tickets to see PINK in Charlotte, along with three of my good close girlfriends.  Last week it happened for me!  We made the pilgrimage to Charlotte to see PINK perform, and WOW, it was excellent!  She did all of this crazy acrobatic stuff, flying through the air and swinging from silk sheets, truly amazing!  We had a nice weekend visit in Charlotte; I’d like to go back when I have more time to explore.  Thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for the ‘rocker style’ Boston Proper black cut-out-shoulder top.
