Just Call Brenda and All of Us Old Plantation Soups & Dips

Becca, Tim, Brenda and Blake

Blake and I had the pleasure of attending the Annual Holiday Open House party for one of our clients, Just Call Brenda (team from Total Source Realty) in late December.  Tim and Brenda Carroll host the party at their lovely home in Cary.  It’s an event that is filled with family, friends, joy for young and old, and magic of the holiday season!  We took our kids along with us this year and they had a great time playing with other kids, exploring the game room upstairs and visiting with Santa.

Western Wake Crisis Ministry donations

My favorite part of this event is that they ask guests to bring non-perishable food items that they donate to the Western Wake Crisis Ministry.  Check out the picture of all of the goodies that were collected!!!!  We really enjoyed the evening and had so much fun talking with everyone.  Thanks Brenda and Tim!!!

Awesome dips!!!

A few months ago I attended a Shopping Spree at the Raleigh Convention Center.  I purchased a few dips from a company out of Louisiana called, All of Us Old Plantation Soups & Dips.  They are soooooo good!  I used all of the ones that I purchased so I had to order more during December to use for parties and events.  I placed my order in early December and they came right away in the mail!  I cheered with joy when they arrived!  The dips are delicious with veggies and pretzels…and really anything.  Funny how the simple things in life can make us so happy!

Party with the W5’ers and Awesome University Heels!

Wild, Wacky, Wonderful Women of the World Post-Holiday Party!

I had such a fun time on Saturday night at the Wild, Wacky, Wonderful Women of the World Post-Holiday Party that was hosted by Deb Meehan.  Such a fun group of people and it was hosted at the Meehan’s lovely house in Cary.  It was packed both inside and outside (they rent a huge tent for the garage/driveway).  Tons of food, great friends, a DJ, and lots and lots and lots of people!  I went with my good friend, Christine Johnson.  Thanks so much for hosting Deb!  You looked like you are having a blast! And thanks to Lois Cozart of My Girlfriend’s Closet for the lovely sparkly teal sweater!

Rebecca Lakey of Fan Feet

I also met a really cool girl at the party, Rebecca Lakey.  She’s the Director of Operations for a company called Fan Feet.  You know this means shoes right!?!? And not just ANY shoes, but shoes that have university logos on them!  And they are in the school colors!  Rebecca was wearing a pair of UNC Fan Feet.  They were a black smooth patent leather, closed-toed concealed platform heel (called the Chelsea Heel).  The bottom of the shoe was Carolina blue!  LOVE!  I’m waiting on them to get the Chelsea Heel for my PIRATE PURPLE (East Carolina University).  They have the ECU heel in the Madita Heel.  Such a cool idea Rebecca!

So…what’s new with you!?!

Ceramic Piggy Banks at Chick-Fil-A

Kids painting Smith & Smith, CPA piggy banks

This little piggy went to market, this little piggy stayed home, this little piggy had roast beef and this little piggy went to Chick-fil-a Waverly Place in Cary, NC to get a fresh paint of coat!  That’s right…the ceramic piggy banks were BACK!  I was so pleased to be invited back to Chick-fil-a Waverly Place to once again have Smith & Smith, CPA host the Tuesday Night Family Night event.  We’ve done this a few times before and it’s really fun marketing event.   I took along 24 ceramic piggy banks, my paint supplies and some Smith & Smith, CPA marketing materials.

Piggy Banks out to dry

I went a few days early and set-up a small table in the foyer to advertise our event.  I thought I would be fine with 24 piggy banks but ended up running out in the first hour!  I had to turn several kids away and that made me so sad!  I love how creative all of my painters were this time.  I used a Sharpie Paint Pen to write “Smith & Smith , CPA” on one side and their name on the other side.  Last time I tried stickers on the ceramic pigs, but they didn’t work very well.

Sarah, Trent, Becca and Alicia

Thanks so much to Sarah Thacker of Thacker Law Firm for helping me out with the pigs.  She ran the blow dryer on the pigs (helped to dry all of that paint so that they didn’t make a mess in the kid’s cars on the way home).  We had a fun time talking with all of the kids and parents.  Thanks also to Alicia Angell (works at Smith & Smith, CPA) for coming by with her daughter, Ava, to paint a piggy bank.  See more pictures below from the event.

GCG Flowers and a Post-Holiday Party

Congrats GCG Flowers!!!!

We just love it when our clients do really well and when they recieve recognition and honors!  I stopped by GCG Flowers, a long-time client of Smith & Smith, CPA, earlier this week. I was on my way to a luncheon and I needed to purchase a door prize to take along.  I always try to use our clients and services first whenever possible, and since GCG Flowers was on the way, I just swung by their store and picked up a super cute glass bowl floral arrangement.  GCG Flower and Plant Design owners, Rebecca and Scott, are always really nice and I love stopping by to see them!  They were happy to share with me their recent news of being recognized by 1-800-Flowers with a “TOP PERFORMANCE AWARD”.  CONGRATS!!!!  That is really awesome and well deserved!  Here is a great picture of Rebecca and Scott with their award.

Rita with her flowers from GCG Flowers

And here is a picture of my lovely friend, Rita Sellers, co-owner of Outside Raleigh at the WBON meeting that afternoon. She was the lucky winner of the flower arrangement!  Look close and see the really neat leather nametag that was made by a friend for GCG Flowers.  I am sure Rita will enjoy her flowers for several days!!!

Dress from My Girlfriend’s Closet

Blake and I had a great time last night at my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club Post-Holiday Party.  A few years ago we were all set to have our Holiday Party at the end of December and a HUGE snowstorm came along and the whole town was shut down!  So we had to cancel the party and move it to January.  Well, after coming back from the crazy holidays, we all decided that we LIKED having the party in the New Year away, so it all worked out!  It’s a lot less stressful and it’s a good time for everyone to really catch up with each other.  Our party was held last night at the NC State University Club and our party committee had arranged a WONDERFUL band to play for us!

Band & Groupies!

The band consisted of one or our C-K Rotary members, Mike Thompson, the former Mayor for the Town of Cary, Ernie McAllister, and a friend of the band members.  They did a great job, took us on a tour of music through the years from California to Texas and onto Miami and the Keys.  For the last song the band invited Sue Creech (one of our favorite members)  me (the incoming President) and up to the stage to help the band with the final song, Jimmy Buffett’s, Margaritaville.  See the video below to hear the band playing Wagon Wheel” by Old Crow Medicine Show (one of my most favorite songs ever!!!)  And thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet of Apex for styling me in the lovely one shoulder black cocktail dress!  It was perfect for the dinner party!  Best place to shop in town!! (and they are having a big sale this weekend!!!!)  Be sure to stop by GCG Flowers for some flowers too!!!

Cary Chamber, Triangle Ladies Power Lunch, Koko FitClub Women’s Social!

Blake presents to the RRAR SBC

Yesterday was really a whirlwind of a day for me!  But a good day!  Just a BUSY day!  And a productive day!  The best kind of day to have right?  I started the morning off early at the Cary Chamber of Commerce at 7:30am.  The Cary Chamber is working with Back Home Productions on a video that will help promote the Chamber as well as reach out to new members about membership.  Right after filming my part of the video commercial, I joined the CCC Board of Directors meeting, where I proudly serve as Vice-Chair of Membership.

Door Prize for RRAR SBC

From there I left to meet Blake over at One-Eleven Place for a presentation to the Raleigh Regional Associations of Realtors Small Brokers Council.  We spoke to this group last year and were very excited to be invited back for another year.  Blake did an excellent job leading the group with his “I’m Talking Tax” presentation.  There were about 25 members present and I’d like to thank Tim Devinney of The Mission Possible Team (President of the SBC) for our kind introduction and welcome into the group.   The SBC currently has around 44 members and is hoping to grow to 100 members by the end of 2013.  We used a nice bottle of wine from Sip…A Wine Store as our door prize.  Blake answered several questions after the presentation and stayed for a bit longer than I did.

Lynn and Becca at TLPL

I left from the RRAR SBC event to go to North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh for the January Triangle Ladies Power Luncheon.  The speaker this month was Mary Cantando, founder of The Women’s Advantage.  It was a nice luncheon and I enjoyed seeing many friends (picture of Lynn ShawThe Triangle TravelHost and me) and was also happy to have two new guests along with me: Rebecca Lakey of FanFeet and Jennifer Hellinger of Jennifer Hellinger, PA, PLLC (botox, dermal fillers and prescription grade skin care).  Thank you also to my friend, Nur Onvural for joining me too.

Triangle Embroidery ladies

Here is a picture of Beth Davis and Kathy Wimberly of Triangle Embroidery.  Beth is the Business Developer and Kathy is the Owner.  This was their first time to the TLPL event and I am sure they had a great time meeting new friends and listening to Mary speak.  Thanks for stopping by the Smith & Smith, CPA booth to say hello ladies!  I also want to thanks My Girlfriend’s Closet of Apex and downtown Cary for styling me in the Romeo & Juliet Couture animal print long sheer vest.  It was an easy wear and I had lots of compliments on it all day!

Resolution Revolution Women’s Social at Koko FitClub

My Wednesday Whirlwind finally ended with a nice women’s social event called “Resolution Revolution… New Year…New You”!  This event was held at Koko FitClub in Cary and was Anne Cook’s idea (owner of Koko FitClub Cary).  She wanted to have a nice women’s social at her place, so we pulled in a few more friends for sponsors and threw this fun little social together.  We had food, wine, and door prizes to entice people to come! (haha)

Anne, Becca and Beth

We ended-up having a nice crowd of about 36 people and did a really funny skit that incorporated all of the businesses involved.  Thank you to everyone who came out and to my fellow sponsors (Beth of Village Cleaners, Dr. Heather of Nirvelli Day Spa, Jodi of Rodan & Fields, Heidi of WickChick, and of course…Anne of Koko FitClub!)  There are more pictures from the event available on our Smith & Smith, CPA Facebook page.  I did a quick cardio workout at Koko after the event and then it was home home home!!!!!

Town of Cary Firefighters are Awesome!

Trent with Station 6 Firefighters

The Town of Cary is such a great place to live and work!  Here is a cute story of why I am so biased towards this town…  Over the long holiday weekend, I traveled to East Tennessee with my mom and boys to visit my grandmothers.  We got back to Cary around 3pm on Monday (MLK Holiday) and went over to the elementary school across from our house to play and ride bikes.  It was getting close to 5pm, so we started to head back home and saw one of the Cary fire trucks turning into the bus lot of the school, so we stopped and waved at all of the firemen (our boys are obsessed with fire trucks, but what little boy isn’t??).

Checking out the truck

The fire truck went down and looped around and then drove back by, so we stopped to wave again.  Except this time the truck stopped and the firemen rolled down the window to see if the boys wanted a fire hat!  Of course they did and so we went over to the truck to get a hat.  Then they got out of the truck and gave Mark & Trent a full tour of the truck, showed them all of the gadgets on the inside and even let them do a demo with the fire hose!  I talked with some of the firemen and they were showing one of the news guys around on their route (they were from the Ten-Ten Station 6).  It was such a cool experience for my boys; they had their own personal fire truck tour!  We’ve been able to see the fire trucks before at other events but this experience really tops them all!  The level of kindness and appreciation for children that the firefighters from Station 6 showed our family that day just really made me love Cary even more!  We really do have the best and most wonderful people living, working and SERVING in our community!  Thank you Station 6 Firefighters!

Coffee, Attorneys and Productivity!

Trent reading the Coffee News

Seems like no matter where you go in town, you can always find one of the Coffee News papers to read.  I’ve been a big fan of reading them for years and I’m so pleased to know that my friend, Rita Sellers, is the owner of Outside Raleigh, which publishes the Coffee News paper (among several other cool marketing opportunities).  Rita’s business partner is Robert Kastelic.  Rita is a fellow WBON Board Member and we’ve known each other for years through the Cary Chamber.  I was at a restaurant last week with my boys and Trent picked up the Coffee News and said, “WOW, I love this! I hope I can find the little guy hiding”.  I had to take this picture, as it was just too cute not to share!  I know several people who advertise with Rita & Coffee News and they love it!

NC House Rep. Duane Hall

Duane Hall stopped by the office last week.  Duane has been a client of Smith & Smith, CPA for several years and has his own law firm in downtown Raleigh (Duane R. Hall II Attorney at Law).  Duane ran for office last year and is now a NC State House of Representatives for District 11.  Congrats Duane on your new position and we know you will serve NC well!  I had the pleasure of sitting with Duane on Wednesday morning for the Cary Chamber Eye Opener Breakfast to hear the Mayor of Cary speak with his “State of the Town Address“.  Duane is a fun guy and shared some of his recent political experiences with me (voting, meetings, etc.)  I’m glad to see Duane involved in the community/district that he represents.

Tracey and Becca

Last week I attended the Cary Chamber Business of Women luncheon to hear guest speaker, Tracey Gritz.  She is the owner of The Efficient Office and talked about “3 Foolproof Steps to Skyrocketing Your Productivity”.  Tracey has been a good friend for many years and I thought she did a great job!  My “take-away” from her presentation was that if you have something on your calendar and you move it 3 times, then you need to delete that task, as it is just not a priority for you.  Great advice Tracey!  And thanks (as always) to My Girlfriend’s Closet of Apex for the amazing zebra print blazer that I wore for the luncheon!  These cold January days have been a ‘frozen treat’ for those of us who love cold weather.  I’m glad I have MGCto shop for warm winter jackets and great sweaters!  Check them out for great clothes, shoes and accessories!

Have you heard of Shop Local Raleigh and WickChick Yet?

Shop Local Raleigh

One of my good friends, Kim Davis of The Payroll People, told me a few months ago about a really neat group called Shop Local Raleigh.  She’s been part of the group for nearly a year and had wonderful things to say about everyone involved.  So I checked them out online and joined the group in early January.  Last Friday was the Shop Local Raleigh January social at Joint Venture Jewelry in Cary and I was happy to attend.  Shop Local Raleigh is all about promoting & supporting locally owned and independent businesses.  Their mission is to drive traffic to the member’s websites and to encourage consumers to spend their dollars with local businesses.

Shop Local Raleigh Friends

I had a great time at the social, loved seeing the Hankin family who owns Joint Venture Jewelry and met tons of great new people!  I look forward to more events and opportunities with this group!  I want to give a shout-out to some people I met at the Shop Local Raleigh social: Janet Roach of FABfaces, Carla Perkins of Danceformation, Inc., Annelies Manja Gentile, Nichole Steele of Telepathic Graphics, Lauren K. Campbell of The DiLeone Law Group and Gregory Whitt of Drum for Change.  Thanks also to My Girlfriend’s Closet of Apex for the lovely black & purple sheer blouse that I was wearing…they always dress me in the best stuff!!!!  Go check them out, they have a store in downtown Cary and downtown Apex!

WickChick Heidi Harris

I also want to give some love to a new favorite obsession of mine….WickChick Candles!!  Owner, Heidi Harris, makes these homemade soy candles using 100% natural American-made materials.  She came by Smith & Smith, CPA last week for a ‘sniff and buy’ session with me.  I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE her candles!  The aroma fills the whole house and they last a long time!  My favorite scents are the ‘MAN ROOM’ and ‘VANILLA HAZELNUT’. You can find her on Facebook at WickChickNC and can purchase candles right from her site! Thanks Heidi!!!

Talking Tax and Tax Law/Health Care for Asian Focus Group

Asian Focus

Back in the fall we had the pleasure of being introduced to the Asian Focus Group.  My friend, Grace Wang, was kind enough to make the introduction for us.  A few weeks ago, Smith & Smith, CPA was asked to make a tax presentation for the Asian Focus Group and help them understand some of the important tax changes for the 2013 year.  This was a great opportunity for us as we had done a similar presentation in early January to the Raleigh Regional Association of Realtors Small Brokers Council.  For the Asian Focus Group, we also took along tax attorney, Sarah Thacker of Thacker Law Firm.

Blake presenting

Blake and Sarah made the two presentations to the group and received rave reviews!  Taxes and tax laws can be very complicated, especially for new people to the United States.  Blake and Sarah worked together to explain the new changes in taxes and healthcare laws and were very effective at answering questions and helping members of the Asian Focus Group.  The mission for the Asian Focus Group is to promote, sponsor and support programs to help Asian Americans and Asian immigrants of all ages acclimate into American society. They focus on daily culture, linguistic challenges, education, diversity and cultural exchange services that help Asian Americans strive towards the betterment of tomorrow.

United Way of the Greater Triangle

We really enjoyed presenting to the group and look forward to more activities with them during the year!  Thank you to Yun-Lieh Chuu and Jin Tingmei for being so wonderful towards us!  Also thank you to Al Reynolds, Program Operations Coordinator, of the United Way of the Greater Triangle who provided the meeting space for the Asian Focus Group presentation.  They provide a great service to the community as well, more can be found out on their website.
