Run Run Run and then Get Glammed Up!

Jingle Bell Race

Very proud to say that four of us from Smith & Smith, CPA ran in the 2012 Raleigh Jingle Bell race this past Saturday.  We had a great time; Cam & Brooke Smith joined us for our first 5k race together.  We also took along our kids and met with neighbors, Lisa-Gray and Benjamin.  This was Trent’s 3rd 5k race since September, he’s become a good runner!  The Jingle Bell Race was a fundraiser to support the fight against arthritis.  It’s been recognized as one of the “21 Most Incredible Themed Races”.  We loved seeing all of the cool Christmas/Holiday costumes and they even have a contest at the end!

Clinique at Belk Crabtree

Saturday evening I took my good friend,  Heather Swanner, along with me to the Clinique at Belk Crabtree Mall in Raleigh for a fun afternoon with the Clinique Beauty Experts!  It was their “Coffee to Cocktails Red Carpet Ready” event.  I saw Jennifer Elkin (Clinique) at the TLPL last week and she had invited me to the event and told me to bring a friend along.  Heather and I were going to our girlfriend’s Christmas party later on Saturday night, so the opportunity was perfect!  Thank you Jennifer and Stacey for making us look glamorous and for the event time!  Jennifer and I will be doing some networking and referral swapping through our TLPL connections in 2013.

 Holiday Mixes and Mediterranean Flavors

BizMix Holiday Social

December always means good holiday parties and I love how they start out early in the month!  Sarah Thacker and I attended the Triangle Business Journal Holiday Bizmix on Monday night.  The event was SOLD OUT and was held at Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Durham.  Sarah and I had a really nice time at the event; we missed the door prize drawing (bummer!) but were still able to enjoy a few of the appetizers and evening drinks.  It was nice to see Michelle Muir and Gary Becker at the social and I had the opportunity to meet other business owners & leaders.

Time to kick back and relax!

Michelle introduced me to Anna Kizer, she’s the owner of Vino!! Wine Shop in downtown Pittsboro.  I’m going to plan a daytrip to Pittsboro with my mom and I look forward to stopping by to see Anna!  We had fun talking with Dennis Hinkle, a new friend from the TJB.  Sarah and I were both exhausted from a long day of work so we kicked our shoes off as we headed over to the local Chili’s to relax for the evening.  Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet of Apex for the social cocktail dress, it was HOT PINK and really added a splash of color to the evening event!  Best place to shop in Cary/Apex!

Julie and Sarah at Bosphorus

I had lunch at a Cary restaurant on Tuesday with Sarah and friend, Julie Dudley, owner of Silver Pearl, Inc.  This was my first time eating at Bosphorus Restaurant, which serves authentic & healthy Turkish Mediterranean cuisine.  Sarah is a big fan of this place, so she helped navigate us through the menu.  We shared the Bosphorus Meze Platter (cold appetizer) and then I had the Adana Kebab (spicy hot) entrée for lunch.  All of it was very good and very fresh.  It was a nice change of flavor for me and the restaurant was fully packed while we were there.  Prices were reasonable (thanks for lunch Sarah!) and I look forward to going back there soon.  Bosphorus on Urbanspoon

Holidays, Cheer, Food and Laughs!

Bell Ringing

December always brings lots of fun events!  So many fun things to go and do and I just love them all!  One of my most favorites is the Salvation Army Bell ringing!  I’ve been doing this community service for years with my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club.  I look forward to it each year for many reasons.  First of all, it brings back great childhood memories for me; getting some coins from my dad to put in the kettle, I will always remember that!  But it also gives me a chance to ring for 2 hours with a fellow Rotarian from my club and it’s a chance to talk and get to know them better.  This year I had the opportunity to ring with Helen Collier and Shelton Ennis.  My good friend from the Cary Chamber, Meg Moraties, also wanted to ring some with us, so she joined us one afternoon.  We had a lot of fun and even made a cute video!  Check it out below!

Goodnights Comedy Club

We took some fellow BNI networking friends with us to Goodnights Comedy Club in downtown Raleigh on Friday night.  One of my good friends had passed along a group pass for us to use, so that was our ticket to FUN! We met for dinner at the Old Bar downstairs and had a great time catching up on and telling stories.  The food was delicious and we shared several appetizers before our meals came. The Old Bar on Urbanspoon

Heidi, Melissa & Becca

I had a chance to see Shannon Reeder, owner of Goodnights, before dinner.  We met a few months ago at the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch, through a mutual friend, Lynn Shaw.  We attended the 10:15pm comedy show that featured comedian Melissa Villasenor.  She was really funny and after the show I had a picture taken with her and friend Heidi Harris.

AsianFocus Holiday Cheer

Blake and I rounded out the weekend by attending the AsianFocus Holiday Cheers Party at Yoho Asian Bistro in Cary.  Blake and I’ve been to YoHo several times before and their food is always good.  This time I had the pad thai and Blake had the steak and shrimp hibachi meal.  We enjoyed getting to meet new friends in this group and look forward to going to more of their events in 2013.  Many thanks for friends Grace Wang and Lily Chan for extending the invitation for us to attend.YoHo Asian Bistro on Urbanspoon

Cooking with Elise and Supporting the Community!

Friends with Chef Elise

Last week got away from me (BIG TIME), so I am a few days behind with blogs, but hey, I’ll make it up this week!  Great stories and events coming your way, STAY TUNED!  So let’s start with the first with last Tuesday at the VERY FIRSTCooking Live with Chef Elise”.  This event was held at the lovely Matthew’s House in downtown Cary and featured Chef Elise cooking three different holiday appetizers and benefited Dorcas Ministries.

Matthew’s House

Now this concept is ‘new’ and really neat…you pay $15 and you get to attend a very nice event where Chef Elise is being taped while cooking up some delicious items, network and socialize with local citizens, all while supporting a local nonprofit agency!  What a great idea!  I attended with Alicia Angell (our newest member at Smith & Smith, CPA) and we had a great time!  I’m a big fan of Dorcas Ministries, I’ve been friends with Howard Manning (Executive Director) and Deidre Jersey (Capital Campaign Coordinator) for many years and I love supporting/shopping at Dorcas!

Alicia showing off the food

I’m also a HUGE fan of the Matthew’s House (client for Smith & Smith, CPA) and always being able to go their property for events.  Everyone who attended was asked to bring a non-perishable food item to help stock the pantry for clients in need of Dorcas Ministries.  It was so cool to see how much food was being donated!  Chef Elise was a huge delight to watch!  She laughed, made jokes, told stories, introduced her family and friends and of course…COOKED!  You could tell she was having a blast up there!  The event was completely SOLD OUT and they even had to turn people away!  This will become a monthly event and will only continue to get better and better! Do you want to know what Chef Elise cooked live for us?? (We got to sample the food and had a nice glass of wine too!)  The first item she cooked was a carrot-marbleized appetizer!

Cooking with Chef Elise

The Food Network had asked her to prepare an appetizer using carrots and that is what she came up with! It was served on a nice slice of Brie cheese and was soooooo good!  Her second item was quiche with asparagus (YUM) and the final menu item she whipped up was roasted red pepper hummus with a falafel!  There was a live band that added a lot of entertainment to whole night.  My favorite thing that Chef Elise said was “Most women want diamonds…but not me.  I tell my husband I want small kitchen appliances instead of diamonds!”

There was a short video clip that played and told about Dorcas Ministries and their mission.  I can see this event growing bigger and bigger and will be a monthly regular for my calendar!  Hope to see you there in January 2013!  And many thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet boutique for the lovely deep purple Rebecca Taylor embellished silk top that I wore!  Lois Cozart, owner of My Gilfriend’s Closet in Apex and Cary, really knows how to pick the best clothing for women!

We are Planning a Conference…for 2015!!!!

AENC Annual Trade Show

A few weeks ago I was asked by Matthew Kane (Rotary Governor 2014-15 for District 7710) to help plan the RD 7710 Conference for 2015.  This will be my first experience with planning a conference, but I am up for the challenge!  The conference typically takes place in April and can be hosted anywhere along the South-East Coast (usually in NC, SC, Eastern TN or VA).  The planning committee has to take into consideration the driving/travel distance and the cost of lodging.  I was really excited that Matthew asked me to help participate in the planning for the 2015 conference.

Cool AENC Ice Carving

Our first duty was to attend the AENC Annual Trade Show (Association Executives of North Carolina).  This expo was held in downtown Raleigh at the Convention Center and featured over 200 Chamber of Commerce’s, Visitor Bureaus, hotels, condos, travel destination and anyone else associated with large conference planning.  This trade show was excellent for anyone/group who is in the midst of planning a conference!

Planning a conference

The AENC was open only to individuals who are employed by or volunteer with nonprofit associations/societies and meeting planners who work for corporate, educational, non-profit, health or government organizations.  We registered with Rotary International as volunteers planning a conference for 2015.

Attending this event brought back some good memories of my years as an undergraduate at East Carolina University in the Hospitality & Tourism department.  I attended the AENC event with Matthew and fellow Rotarians, Arthur Rogers and Lori Barbier.  We had a great time walking around and talking about possible conference locations.  Below is a fun picture of Matthew and Arthur at the Hickory, NC booth.

Erin and Becca

The 2012 conference was held in New Bern, NC and was a favorite location for many.  The 2013 conference will be held in Raleigh and 2014 will be held in Ashville, NC.  We talked with lots of conference centers, hotels and restaurants during the afternoon and shared with them our thoughts about planning a conference and took some of their ideas into consideration.  Our event typically draws about 250 Rotarians and requires about 100 hotel/lodging options.  It’s a 2-3 day conference and really creates a lot of new friendships among Rotary clubs in our district, as well as a good opportunity to learn about other clubs and get some ideas to take back to your club.  The afternoon went fast, we met some really great people, learned about some neat destinations and came up with some good possible locations.  I was so thrilled to see one of my ECU friends, Erin Dale!

Tonya and Becca

Erin and I were ECU Ambassadors together and were also in the same hospitality & tourism department together.  Erin’s group was doing a neat project; they were having guests build a “Furry Friend” by Teddy Bear in a Box, and were going to donate them to the Orange County Women & Child Center.  I went through the Greensboro Convention & Visitors Bureau area and stopped to talk with Tonya Miller, Sales Manager, for Embassy Suites Hotel.  Thanks Tonya for being willing to SMILE with me for a blog picture!

Matthew & Arthur with La Quinta of Hickory, NC

We have a lot of work ahead of us towards planning a conference for 2015, but it is going to be fun and I’m excited!  Rotary is such a great opportunity to be involved in your community and our WORLD!  Thank you to My Girlfriend’s Closet, for helping me pick out this sparkly pink sweater!  It was a perfect top for the holidays and I’ve enjoyed wearing it to many events!  I really love the black pumps that were accented with a pink puffball on the toe!  Such a cute unexpected addition!

Cary Chamber Breakfast at Mimi’s with Gifts and Sweet Treats!

Cary Chamber Ambassadors

Every December the Cary Chamber of Commerce treats their Ambassadors to a Holiday Breakfast.  This is a fun morning to really honor the dedication of the Ambassadors to the Cary Chamber.  It’s also a good time to see friends, catch-up and talk about events for the coming new year.  The Cary Chamber has lots of great events planned for 2013, so it’s a wonderful time to help bring in new members too!  The membership drive will officially kick-off in February 2013, stay tuned for more!

Our office has been buzzing for the past two weeks with clients in and out bringing sweet treats and delicious desserts!  Thanks to all who have stopped by and brought kind gifts.  See the pictures below!

Bikes, Presents and Cheer from the Salvation Army

salvation army Toy Shop

Blake and I had the awesome pleasure of working at the Salvation Army distribution center for the 2012 Operation Toy Shop. This was our second year in a row doing volunteer work and it’s something that we look forward to each holiday season.  We volunteer on behalf of my Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club and joined two other club members on Thursday to volunteer for 4 hours.  It takes lots of volunteers to help organize this pick-up and this year they added a digital wheel to award brand new bicycles.

New bikes!!!!!

Angel Tree recipients had to have at least once child age 7 or older to spin the wheel for a chance to win a bike.  Blake and I both had bike winners, it was so cool to see the smile on their face when they won a bike!   Thanks so much to the Salvation Army for all that they do towards taking care of meeting the needs of those in our community.  And thank you to all who continue to faithfully support the mission of the Salvation Army.

More goodies!!!!

One more client Christmas gift came in today…it’s the fresh & homemade cookies from Jen Rossi of Mediscribe!  I look forward to her cooking/baking each holiday season!  Thanks a bunch Jen!  They won’t last long!

ECU Christmas!

And last but not least, here is a wonderful picture of my mother, Marsha, and her co-worker, Millicent.  They both work at East Carolina University and help students in the Continuing Education Department.  Great picture ladies!  You both look so festive!

Wishing all of our clients, friends, family and loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2013 and a season full of wonderful Holiday Memories!
