November 2012 Archives

Did everyone have a great Halloween 2012!?!?!  I know for our neighbors/friends/family up north who have suffered great loss from Hurricane Sandy, that yesterday was a day of clean-up and assessment of damage…and our hearts go out to them.

Smith family & friends

The families of Smith & Smith, CPA enjoyed a good & safe Halloween together.  The weather was perfect, so we were able to carry on our tradition of our Halloween block-party at Bob & Sharon’s cul-de-sac in the neighborhood.  We all showed up around 6pm with food, decorations, candy, chairs, and costumes of course!  The kiddos had a great time running around and riding bikes before we left to go trick-or-treating.  We all started out together on the quest for candy, but the younger kids soon fell behind, so it was up to the older kids to scavenger up the most goodies!

Check out our ever-growing picture of family and friends.

Happy Trick-or-Treating from Smith & Smith, CPA!

Monster Dash

We also participated in the Monster Dash over the weekend.  This was a fun race that was held at Cameron Village in downtown Raleigh and benefited the Raleigh Police Memorial Foundation (Remembering our Heroes)…what a great cause!!!  Both of the boys ran the race with us and it was Trent’s 2nd 5k race.  I loved seeing all of the costumes and they had a really cool area for their Kid Zone (provided by the YMCA).  This race is part of the SecondEmpire Grand-Prix Fall 2012 Series.

Blond or Brunette???  And My Son has Red Hair!

Life Experiences Party

Do blonds really have more fun? I don’t know for sure (hey, my hair is ‘blond’)…but I do know that I spent half of the day on Halloween under a dark black wig, and I still had a fun day!  I helped the Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club (my club) with an afternoon Halloween party for the sweet people of Life Experiences.  We set-up trick-or-treat spots around their building and each department took turns coming by to get goodies and treats.  It was really fun!  Our Rotary club does several holidays parties for them throughout the year and it’s always such a joy to be able to interact with all of them. After the trick-or-treating, they gathered in the cafeteria area for some afternoon snacks.

Candy and Toothbrushes!!!

Following that event I rushed back across town to get ready for the Executive Park Learning Center Annual Halloween Parade!  We love seeing all of the precious school children come down the street proudly showing off their Halloween costumes!  This year we set up a candy table too and I was so happy have Dr. Turnbull, DDS office staff come out too and bring toothbrushes for all of the kids!  What a nice treat!  Thank you to Dr. Turnbull, they were a hit among the parents (and kids!!!).  Blake and Sharon came out to help with the trick-or-treat table (I was running around taking pictures of course!)

Autumn with the Tiger Hummer with Dylan and Mark

I also invited Autumn LaBarca, Director of Marketing for White Tiger Taekwondo & Martial Arts to come over and bring the “Tiger Hummer”.  She handed out candy to the kids in front of the Tiger Hummer and a cool marketing tool called “Kick or Treat?” that was a special offer of one FREE MONTH of Martial Arts (including a free t-shirt and belt)!  That’s a great deal!  The kids loved seeing the big Tiger Hummer and they also stopped to trick-or-treat at a few other businesses on their way back to preschool.  Thank you to My Girlfriend’s Closet for the warm Ann Taylor Loft black sweater dress and leather orange belt that I wore on Halloween day!  Great place to shop for ALL holidays and ALL events!  Blake and I are going to see the Broadway Musical performance of “Catch Me if You Can” next week, so I’m heading over to My Girlfriend’s Closet to find a nice outfit for that night!

Black Wig for Halloween!!!

So what do you think…do blonds have more fun?  Most of my friends are NOT blond, and I always have a great time with them!  I’m gonna stick with blond on my head, that black wig was heavy, itchy and hot!  But fun for the day!

Happy weekend!!!!

Birthdays, Bread and New Beginnings!

Brooke, Trent and Mark

I’ve told you before I am one of those few people who really LOVES Mondays!  I honestly do. Now, I enjoy my family and my kids over the weekend, but I also really enjoy my job and my office, so Mondays are not a “BIG BAD” thing to me.  Today is the first Monday of November, a special month for us at Smith & Smith, CPA as we celebrate BIRTHDAYS in November (Brooke, Trent and Mark).

Thank you Lori!!

I was so happy to see the sweet face of Lori Kizior come in this morning (she is the wife of Dr. Steven Kizior, DDS, one of our dental clients).  Lori came in this morning to pick-up some documents and brought us the best box ever!  It was from Great Harvest Bread and was full of delicious fresh baked muffins and blue berry crumble bread!  YUM!!!!  Lori knows that I am good friends with Page Williams (owner of the Cary Great Harvest Bread) so I always get excited when we see a box of goodies from them!  Thank you so much Lori for thinking of us this morning!

Getting office ready!!!

This is an exciting week for us as we have a NEW employee starting here at Smith & Smith, CPA on Wednesday!  She’s going to be a great addition to our office and we are very much looking forward to her help.  Blake, Cam and I have been working hard to get the additional office space next door ready for her.  Cam’s been ordering all of her new office equipment, I’ve been working on moving & organizing my marketing supplies to a different area and Blake’s been working towards getting her space set and professional.  I attended the final luncheon-reporting session for the Cary Y on their We Build People Campaign and I got back just in time to help Blake & Cam unload some of the delivered boxes of supplies.  Thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet in Apex & downtown Cary for the black & white tunic that I have on, I added some red accessories (the red necklace & bracelet set that I purchased at the Wooly Worm Festival a few weeks ago).

Stay-tuned this week to learn more about our newest addition to Smith & Smith, CPA!  Can’t wait for you to meet her!  Have a good first week of November 2012!!!!

Winner Winner of the Money Tree!

Tanaz won the money tree!!!!

How much money was on the money tree at the Cary Chamber Business Expo!?!?!  That is the question that everyone wants to know! The winning amount that grew on the money tree was $67.74.   I reviewed all of the guesses on the 100+ business cards today and the winner is Tanaz Gorji, Assistant Vice President and Financial Sales Manager for First Citizens Bank in CaryCongrats Tanaz!  She came by earlier to pick-up her winning tree (okay, it’s really a rose bush, but it looks like a tree!!!)  She was very excited and I helped her load the tree into her car. Congrats again Tanza!

Rita, Becca and Lisa

The Cary Chamber Business Expo was a very nice event. I was there from 7:30am-5:30pm, so it made for a long day, but I enjoyed working my booth and I enjoyed my business neighbors (DHW CPA, Backhome Productions, WBON of Cary, Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club, and Nirvelli Day Spa).  There was lots of good traffic at the expo, I talked with many new business owners and made several very strong potential client connections.  I also had the pleasure of seeing lots of friends and business clients.  Here is a picture of me with two of my good networking friends, Rita Sellers of Coffee News/OutsideRaleigh.com and Lisa Cotter of Doctors Express (a new client for Smith & Smith, CPA).  Lisa and her husband, John, had a fantastic looking booth and were one of the first vendors when you entered the expo.  Rita and her business partner, Rob, were on the same aisle as our Smith & Smith, CPA booth, so I got to see her all day.

Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club

My Rotary Club, Cary-Kildaire, had a booth again this year.  Our booth was reflective of our 2012-2013 Rotary Theme, “Peace Through Service”.   I ordered these really cool tye-dye blue Rotary shirts from Marty Helman, Rotary District Governor 7780 in Maine!  The shirts were a nice talking point for our club and we also had a hanging poster (thank you Alphagraphics) that read “Peace through Service…What is your idea of peace?” where we engaged people to tell us what Peace meant to them and then we shared about Rotary and how Rotarians work together to bring peace (of all types) to people around the world.  The Cary Chamber Business Expo takes place one week before our Cary-Kildaire Open House, so the timing is perfect for our club to look for new potential Rotarian members.

Thank you to the Cary Chamber for a great business expo and thanks to all who stopped by to visit Smith & Smith, CPA, WBON of Cary and Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club!

My Girlfriend’s Closet in Apex and Koko FitClub in Cary

So I have two new favorite things…1) seeing my girlfriends shopping at My Girlfriend’s Closet in Apex and 2) working out at Koko FitClub in Cary!

Block Party for My Girlfriend’s Closet of Apex, NC!

Last week my dear friend Lois Cozart had a BLOCK PARTY to celebrate her new Apex, NC store location (219 N. Salem Street, Suite 103 in Apex, NC).  The event was so nice…food, prizes, gifts, discounts, drinks and best of allSEVERAL of my close girlfriends where there to shop and celebrate too!  Gina Gilliam (works with Lois) gave away a really nice gourmet chocolate basket through a Facebook promotion on her real estate site (Gilliam & Associates Realty, LLC).

Friends supporting each other!

I was only able to stay for just a bit as I had to get across town to my Rotary club meeting, but the store was packed and more ladies were coming in as I left.  I saw Lois the next day and she said it was a fantastic evening and that they had lots of friends and new people stop by the store!  I rely on My Girlfriend’s Closet to help me dress for all of my business meetings and networking events (the black & white dress I’m wearing is from their store).  Go shop and tell them Becca said their store was the BEST!  Congrats to Lois and Gina and the other MGC ladies for the new store and how amazing it looks!

Koko FitClub in Cary

My second favorite thing is new…or new to me at least!  I made a sweet friend through WBON of Cary earlier this year named Anne Cook.  She’s from up North and had recently moved down to the South with her husband, Chuck (new tax clients for Smith & Smith, CPA).  They opened the FIRST Koko FitClub in Cary and I’m proud to say that I am a NEW MEMBER!  I had my first workout there this morning and it’s super!  It’s just like having a ‘personal trainer’ with the technology piece that makes the whole workout unique and custom to you!  Here is a picture of my personal training device, my new Koko bag and my headphones. I’ll keep you posted as I track my progress on getting stronger & fit with Koko Fitclub in Cary!  Go check them out!!!  You might remember that I attended the Koko FitClub in Cary Ribbon Cutting Celebration for the Cary Chamber just a few months ago too.

Check out Frank!  He works for Mangum’s Gallery of Floors (a long-time client for Smith & Smith, CPA).  Anyone know the name of this “carpet lifting vehicle” he is driving?

Frank! What are you driving!?!?

Guess on our Smith & Smith, CPA Facebook page (under the picture) and I’ll put all of the CORRECT guesses in a bowl and draw out a winner for a $10 Panera Bread gift card!  I’ll announce the winner on Friday (Nov. 16th) in the afternoon.

Live Auction, Friends and Scholarships!!

Congrats to WBON of Cary for their successful Holiday Gala & Scholarship Fundraiser.  The event was fabulous and was held earlier this week at Homewood Suites of Cary.  This event replaced our normal monthly luncheon and it was a nice change of pace as it was held during the evening hours.

The WBON Fundraising Co-Chairs, Christine Engelbrecht and Cindy Prince, along with several other WBON Board members had been working very hard for the past few months/weeks to ensure that this event was a success!  The gala included being greeted and escorted inside by men wearing tuxes, a red carpet that led to a fun photo shoot, a delicious dinner buffet, cash bar, DJ, plus a silent and live auction of over 70 items!  The WBON Scholarship started in 2001 and so far we’ve raised over $35,000 that has been awarded to women business owners in Wake County.  They use the scholarship money to reinvest in their business by taking additional training course, classes, attend educational expo events, etc. It’s a fantastic program and it has helped many women take their businesses to the next level!   Smith & Smith, CPA was proud to sponsor and donate the “Kids Play” basket of goodies.  I was also a generous supporter of the event as I was the TOP BIDDER on several items!  I had a great time networking with lots of friends, meeting new people and watching the item bids go up and up and up!  I also had my first time at the mic doing the “Live Auction” segment…I like to talk, but WOW, that was a crazy opportunity!  I hope we raised lots of money!  The scholarship will be open for applications in early 2013.

WBON also include a TOY DRIVE for the Women’s Center of Wake County.  This is something that we have done for the past few years and it is so exciting to see al of the toys brought in during the event.  I will personally deliver those toys to the Women’s Center in a few days.  Check out all of the cool toys!  They will certainly make children smile on Christmas morning.

Yesterday I attended the Cary Chamber of Commerce Business of Women November luncheon.  The event was held at Prestonwood Country Club and the speaker talked about addressing family issues BEFORE the holidays get here and how to “STOP DROP AND ROLE” your way through the next coming weeks.  After the luncheon I headed over to Nirvelli Day Spa for their new location GRAND OPENING!  I was joined by good friends, Heather Swanner and Autumn  LaBarca.  We went to support another really good friend, Dr. Heather Seifried (she owns Nirvelli along with her husband, Dave).  Their grand opening was called “IMMERSION”  and they were offering free services throughout the afternoon.  Heather, Autumn and I had Debra (amazing employees at Nirvelli) do a paraffin hand dip…oh wow, so nice!

Here is a picture of us with our hands still in the mitts for the paraffin treatment.   Thanks Dr. Heather and congrats to you and Dave and the rest of Nirvelli for the beautiful new building and your business growth/expansion!!!  Go try them out for a day of amazing spa services!  And thanks to My Girlfriend’s Closet of downtown Apex for my super cute dress!  Gina, a stylist, at MGC gave me the idea to wear it with black tights and boots!  Thanks Gina!  I had lots of compliments all day long.  MGC is the best place to shop!

Proud of you guys!

Hope your turkey was yummy and your blessings were many during the Thanksgiving Holiday!  Our family was blessed by being able to travel to visit family (Eastern Tennessee) and also having family travel here for the weekend Smith/Trent Family Traditional Thanksgiving weekend!  As always, it was fun to see everyone and to catch-up on life and family happenings.  After breakfast on Saturday morning we brought everyone by the office to show off our expanded space.  Here is a picture of Bob, Blake and Cam with Grandma Joyce (Bob’s mother).  She’s very proud of these boys!  The kids had a great time running around the office and we shooed them outside where they then chased Ally-dog around and around.  Check out the video below of them chasing Ally!

Decorate time!

While in Tennessee visiting my family, we had a good time exploring my grandmother’s farmland.  My sweet Aunt Linda brought my grandmother a Christmas Tree, so we went ahead and helped her decorate and light her tree.  Here is a picture of Trent & Mark helping her with the ornaments.

Hope the end of November and the beginning of December brings you lots of love and memories with your family and friends.

Rotary Offers Great LEADERSHIP Training!!!!

Beth, Brooks and Becca

I recently had the pleasure of attending Rotary Leadership Institute Training (known as RLI).  This was my second course in the leadership training and I traveled to High Point, NC to take the Course II class.  The RLI is a series of fast-paced, interactive, one-day courses that are used to enhance and refine a Rotarian’s leadership skills through leadership training.  It also serves as a way of increasing the base knowledge of Rotary and what it means to be a Rotarian.  I took Course I earlier this year in Cary, NC.  I really enjoyed driving to High Point and being able to meet with Rotarians in different clubs and districts.

Leadership Training Project

My favorite part of the leadership training is how interactive and involved you become in the classes.  You really get to hear about other clubs and what they are doing and what’s working for them.  You also find out that other clubs struggle with some of the same things and you can bounce/share ideas about what methods are working.  I met some really cool people (that is you Brooks and Beth!!) and built some relationships that I know will last for years to come!  Most of the RLI leadership training is geared for Rotarians who are getting ready to be President Nominee, President Elect or President for their clubs.

Fun at RLI!

The leadership training is fun, topical and geared towards BUSY business and professional persons who want to become more effective leaders, especially within their own clubs.  After each training, we all return to our clubs with fresh ideas, new contacts, enthusiasm and increased understanding about the potential Rotarian clubs can have on their communities and WORLD!  I always gain so much for this training and I look forward to my final Course III in the Spring of 2013 when I will GRADUATE from RLI!

And thanks to my favorite boutique…My Girlfriend’s Closet of Apex for this super cute (and soft) purple Juicy Couture top that I wore!  It was so sassy with zippers up the arms of each side!  I had tons of compliments on it and told everyone to shop at MGC when they come to Cary for RLI leadership training in January 2013!!!!
