The last week of August was really awesome for me.  I had a CLEAR schedule that included ZERO out-of-the-office meetings! YEA!  I seriously think that’s the first time I’ve had a week like that.  It was great and I really got a lot of stuff done around the office.

Koko FitClub

I took advantage of the ‘free week’ and stopped by Koko FitClub one afternoon.  Our good friends, Anne and Chuck Cook are the proud owners of the Koko FitClub franchise here in the Cary area and I had promised Anne that I would stop by and check out the place.  It is really cool and by far a nice change of pace from the regular ‘gym-workout’ type places.  Blake was with me when we stopped by and we were given a quick tour by Chuck and even got to witness a couple working out.  Koko FitClub includes technology into your workout and you never get bored with the same-ole-routine.  They are offering a complimentary session that includes strength training with their Smartrainer (the technology part I told you about).  Stop by to see Anne & Chuck and check out Koko FitClub!

Thank you Union Bank!

Also had a nice visit last week with the ‘new kids’ in town…Union Bank & Trust Co.  Jessica N. Register (Treasury Services Specialist) and Larry Holt (Cary Market Executive/Senior Vice President) stopped by our office to introduce themselves to our office and to share the news of their office now in the Cary market.  They came baring gifts (always a good thing around here) and their gift was delightfully perfect…a fresh loaf of cinnamon swirl bread from Great Harvest Bread Company!!  Jessica and Larry are very excited about Union Bank (a community bank) and are looking forward to getting involved in the community.  We enjoyed the bread and any gift from GHB of Cary always makes a nice impression (and I’m not just biased since my friends, Paige & Tom own the bakery!!!)  Hoping to see Union Bank join the Cary Chamber soon too!

Gina at MGC

I went by My Girlfriend’s Closet in Apex last week to see Lois, Gina and the girls.  They were very busy with their annual Labor Day Sale in full swing.  I snapped this fun picture of Gina working the cash register; it was ‘smoking hot’ from all of their sales, so Gina was wearing some fashionable shades to keep out the glare!  Gina is always so helpful to clients & customers at MGC and did you know that she also runs a real estate company?  She’s the proud owner of Gilliam & Associates Realty, LLC (a full service residential real estate boutique brokerage firm in Apex, NC).

Cary Chamber Celebrates Another Strong Year!

Shelli & Kevin

Last night was a fantastic night of honor, awards and recognition for the Cary Chamber.  It was the 2012 Annual Banquet, held at the lovely Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, NC.  The evening kicked off at 6pm with a social (some people were so ready to get the evening going that they showed up at 5:30pm!!) and was followed by dinner at 7pm, then the keynote speaker (Bob IngramFormer Chairman & CEO of GlaxoWellcome), and the awards presentation.  This is such a fabulous evening and we had a great time seeing friends and business colleagues.  Shelli Dallacqua (Shelten Media) and her hubby, Kevin, were walking in the same time as us, they were also waiting for Beth Wood to arrive.  Shelli looked lovely in purple, which must have been the ‘color of the night’ as my other good friend, Susan Pruskin (Susan Pruskin Consulting) was wearing purple too (and her hubby Steve, but he wasn’t in purple, haha).

Susan & Steve

Events like this really depend on great sponsors, so as a member of the Cary Chamber Board of Directors, I’d like to extend my personal thanks to those companies who helped sponsor the evening: Presenting SponsorWakeMed Cary Hospital, Gold SponsorsRex UNC Health Care and Hendrick Cary Auto Mall and Town of Cary, Silver SponsorsProgress Energy and Siemens, Speaker Sponsors: AT&T and Back Home ProductionsTable Sponsors: Atlantic Tire & Service, BB&T, BlueCross/Blue Shield of NC, Capital Associates, Carolina Hurricanes, First Citizens Bank, Highwoods Properties, Paragon Commercial Bank, Preston Development, SAS, The Umstead Hotel & Spa, Wells Fargo Bank and Withers & Ravenel.

Ambassador of the Year...Autumn!

The highlight for me of the whole evening is always the awards ceremony!  The Cary Chamber presents three different awards during the evening: Ambassador of the Year, Business of the Year and Citizen of the Year.  The Ambassador of the Year is voted on by all of the Ambassadors (so it’s real honor to receive) and the winner this year was Autumn LaBarca!!!!!  Congrats Autumn!!!   Autumn is the Director of Public Relations for Capital Financial Advisory Group, LLC.

Howard Johnson, Cary Chamber Citizen of the Year 2012

The Business of the Year award was presented to Hendrick Cary Auto MallThe Citizen of the Year award was a very special and heart filled award this year…it was given to the Cary Chamber President himself, Howard Johnson!  Only the Executive Board (4 people) knew it was going to Howard and he was totally shocked!  Howard has been with the Cary Chamber since 1986 and has been a solid figurehead in our community for many years.  Howard’s son even sent a text message video of him congratulating his dad and they showed it on the screen.

Blake & Becca Cary Chamber Banquet 2012

Tom Huff (Chair 2011-2012) ended the night with a recap of the events from the previous year and then welcomed the new incoming Chair, Kathy Burns, to the stage.  I am very much looking forward to Kathy’s leadership this upcoming year!  It was such a wonderful night and we are so blessed to live, work and play in Cary!  No better place to be!  The Cary Chamber is ramping up for a very busy Fall calendar, don’t miss out on all of their educational and networking events!  And I’ve love to give a very special shout-out to My Girlfriend’s Closet in Apex for styling me in this totally fabulous dress!  It was a huge hit; I had tons and tons of compliments on it!  I owe it all to Lois and her staff for helping me select such a lovely piece!  You can find this dress at the My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex!

Wake Tech & Cary Chamber Social Media Class

Cary Chamber & Wake Tech

Last week I attended a really excellent social media class!  It was a FREE seminar for Cary Chamber members and the business community offered by Wake Tech and the Cary ChamberMartin Brossman taught the social media class and did an amazing job covering LOTS of material in a small period of time.  The social media class was held at the Western Wake  Tech campus in Cary and the room was full and ready to go at 8:30am!  Martin started the class by asking several volunteers what they expected to get out of the class.  For the rest of the time Martin covered everything from the types of social media outlets out there, to why social media, how to use it to grow/expand your business, what to do and what not to do, how to spend quality (not quantity) time on social media and ways to use it to your benefit.  He gave a quick overview of some of the major social media sites: facebook, twitter, LinedIn, and believe it or not…Pintrest

He also covered some good tips on blogging and groupon.com

Social Media Class

Martin used lots of real-world examples of how small business owners are using social media.  He even gave some tips on how to manage any negative online reviews/comments.   I was pleased to see so many Cary Chamber members taking advantage of this FREE class, and it’s nice to know that you are not the only one out there trying to figure out all of the social media stuff!  Martin Brossman is a success coach, speaker, trainer and author and splits his time between the Triangle Area and Washington, DC.  I asked Martin for permission to film a short video of him after the meeting talking about social media and why he loves teaching it to Chambers & chamber members.  Click below to watch!

Want to be able to attend FREE social media classes like this?  Join the Cary Chamber Today and you can!

WBON in Sept 2012

We had a wonderful September WBON meeting yesterday.  The room was full with over 50 ladies in attendance and there was a buzz about Fall and the cooler weather in the air for sure!  We had three lovely women from local Chamber of Commerce communities attend as our guest speakers; Delancy CarrollCary Chamber, Kim NiskeyThe Greater Raleigh Chamber and Carlotta Ungaro of the Morrisville Chamber.  The ladies spoke about “Networking Strategies with Chamber Power”.  They each took turns teaching and giving tips on how to be a good ‘networker’ and any event.  Kim was first and she talked on the topic of “How to Have Fun Networking the Room”.  Delancy followed Kim with her topic “Making People REMEMBER You” and Carlotta finished the panel with her topic of “Creating a Captivating 30-Second Introduction”.

Chamber Panel

We can’t thank these chamber women enough for taking time to join us and to share their insight and knowledge on networking.  We are so blessed in the Triangle Area to have a HUGE selection of networking groups, meetings and opportunities for business growth and development!  We had a fun picture made after meeting of all of the women who were wearing black & white!   I’d like to give a shout-out to My Girlfriend’s Closet, owned by WBON Board Member, Lois Cozart, for styling me in this fabulous dress!  It was ‘nicknamed’ the zebra dress.  It can be found at My Girlfriend’s Closet store in Apex (their second store is in downtown Cary).

Great Harvest Bread treats!

I also want to say THANK YOU to Great Harvest Bread of Cary for delivering this AMAZAING basket of warm bread, goodies and treats earlier this week!  It was such a nice gift and we’ve been enjoying (and sharing) the Cinnamon Swirl bread, Honey Whole Wheat loaf and their Pumpkin Chocolate Chip bread (and a really nice Great Harvest bread knife!Great Harvest Bread is gearing up for a very busy holiday season where they will create delicious breadbaskets for their clients. They have fresh gift ideas for every taste and every budget!  Give them a call and tell them that Becca sent you!  Thank you Jennifer for bringing the basket by and thank you Paige Williams for being such a huge part of our community!

We Build People, Miche is My Fave, and Autumn is Here!

We Build People 2012

About three years ago I was asked to participate in the Cary YMCA We Build People Annual Campaign.  It was a good experience and while I wasn’t one of the top campaign leaders by any means, I really did learn a lot about our community and made many new friends/connections.  So here I am three years later and very blessed to still be a part of the WBPAC.  The Y recently held the Major Gifts Kick-Off and I’m very excited about helping out again.  My sweet friend, Jill Heath, is the Cary Family YMCA 2012 Branch Campaign Chair and I’m on Team Carr

And the Genie Says...

The Kick-Off luncheon was a lot of fun last week and we were all pumped up and motivated by Brian Reid, Tim Carr, Billy Sutton, Bill Smith and Diane Hillsgrove to really go out and help raise funds for the Y programs.  The Y plays a huge role in helping underprivileged children attend summer camp, after-school-programs, leadership seminars and so much more.  It can be challenging to ask for contributions, but when you know firsthand how the money is going to be spent and the lives that will be changed, it makes the asking a little bit easier.  They did a really funny skit at the end of the luncheon with “Ima Volunteer” and her “Magic Genie”…it was great…very creative.  Let me know if you are interested in learning more about the We Build People Campaign, I’d love to share it with you.

Miche shopping...

WOW, I really do love a Miche bag!  Ever heard of it?  I bought my first one about two years ago from the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch.  I looked at them for two months though before I finally decided that I really wanted one, and it has honestly been one of the best purchases ever!  I use Dare Robertson as my Miche Distributor.  Dare and I met at the TLPL and have been friends ever since.  She is one of the Miche Founding Leaders and has her team spread over two continents and nine states!  Dare stopped by last week and I’m so glad she did! I’m ready for Fall with my new Miche shells!  Thanks Dare!

Hello Autumn!!!

We are all so happy to finally see signs of autumn and cooler weather in the area!  Speaking of autumn, I was in Michael Arts & Crafts the other day and saw this cool basket with the word “AUTUMN” on it…one of my good friends is named “Autumn”, so I had to get this basket for her!  I gave it too her last week at the Cary Chamber Ambassador meeting.  She loved it!  And it was fun for me to be back at an Ambassador meeting!  As Vice-Chair for Member Services, it’s one of my goals to attend the Ambassador meetings and stay involved with ribbon cuttings and other member events. And I have to mention my awesome Diane Von Furstenberg dress, right from the racks of My Girlfriend’s Closet of downtown Cary!  Lois styled me with the necklace and Michael Kors heels too.  Thank you MGC!  Have you been there to shop yet?? Their shop in Apex is moving to a different location soon and are having A BIG SALE!  Go by and tell them Becca sent you!

A Hunting We Will Go…on the 3rd Annual Cary Scavenger Hunt!

Cary Scavenger Hunt 2012

This year marked the 3rd Annual Cary Scavenger Hunt, presented by CaryCitizen.com and hosted by Waverly PlaceSmith & Smith, CPA was proud to be a Silver Sponsor  for the Cary Scavenger Hunt and Blake, Becca and Trent represented a Family Team during the race.  This was our first time participating in the race, so our initial strategy was to just go, compete and have a good time.  Well…our competitive edge quickly kicked in and we really gave it our all to try to win.  Did we come out as winnners…keep reading to find out!

Looking for clues!

The event was awesome, there were 62 teams, broken into two different categories: Adult Teams and Family Teams, and had around 250 participants!  We met up at Waverly Place on Saturday morning at 9:30am to get checked-in, change into our scavenger hunt t-shirts and hear the final rules/announcements.  Our team name was “Trent-Tastic”, guess who that it was named after?  There were 62 clues in the book that included both group photo answers and write-in answers for places, art, events, and locations all around Cary.  We were released at 10am with our Club Books and off we went and were required to be back at 1:30pm or else face a 50points per minute penalty! YIKES!  We had a great time, Blake was our driver, I was the clue book navigator and Trent was along for the photos and fun.  We traveled all over Cary during the next 3.5 hours and I was actually quite impressed with how much I knew about Cary and how much we LEARENED about Cary!  Some of my favorite pictures are below.  And did we win…no, we came close though but we REALLY had fun and we look forward to participating & sponsoring in the years to come!  Thank you CaryCitizen.com for a totally amazing time on the Cary Scavenger Hunt!

Look at all those sponsors!

Zombie Mud Run "BEFORE"

A few weeks ago Blake and I participated in the Zombie Escape at Panic Point 5K Mud Run.  The event involved more than 1,800 racers and several hundred zombies.  The idea of the race was simple: run through the mud, conqueror the obstacles and avoid the zombies.  Easier said then done!  Everyone was given a flag football style belt at the beginning of the race that went around your waist and had 3 colored flags.  The challenge was to complete the course with at least ONE of your flags still on.  This is where the zombies came in…they were scatted all throughout the course and they tried to grab your flags as you went by them.  Needless to say, all of my flags were GONE within the first zombie forest.  You could go to a ‘medic’ on the course and do push-ups or another strength exercise to earn more flags back, but after the first MASSIVE mud-pit obstacles, I knew I was going to need ALL of my strength to just complete the course!  I’ve never seen so much MUD on a mud run!  WOW, they didn’t hold back on making this event super muddy, super yucky, super challenging and super dirty!   We made funny shirts to wear and of course, they were mud soaked and destroyed by the end.

Zombie Mud Run"AFTER"

It was a great time though.  We’ll be back to the event in April 2013, want to join us!?!  Register here by the end of Oct and it’s only $50!  Proceeds from the event benefited The Miracle League…which was my main pull for doing this race.  My Rotary Club, Cary-Kildaire Rotary, is a big supporter for the Miracle League.  What do you think about our before and after pictures?? I told you it was a muddy but fun race right???

Ladies Networking

ladies networking at TLPL

This week of September has been full of excellent ladies networking events!  On Wednesday I attended the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch, where Smith & Smith, CPA proudly serves as a Corporate Sponsor.  The speaker was Sepideh Asefnia, Founder & President of SEPI Engineering Group.  She talked to the ladies about her ‘climb of the corporate ladder’, beginning with her father telling her to make sure she finds a career and a job that she loves.  Her family is from Iran and her mother always stressed the importance of education to her and her sister.

Carrie, Sepidah and Becca

Ms. Asefnia said that as women, we have to make a choice and go…staying still and doing nothing will just not do.  She also said that women need to stop whining and just accept the fact that sometimes we have to work a little bit harder, smarter and faster.  Her company has been listed on Forbes Fastest growing companies and her company has three offices in North Carolina and 120 employees.  She used one of her favorite quotes from Eleanor Roosevelt, “You must do the things you think you cannot do”.  I love that quote. I enjoyed hearing her speak and thank you Carrie Peele (hostess & founder of the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch and the QUEEN of ladies networking events) for being Sepideh as a speaker!  I had a wonderful table of ladies & guests:  Heather Swanner (Heather Swanner Photography), Susan Pruskin (Susan Pruskin Consulting), Carmen Ritz (Ritz State Farm Agency), Margaret Broadwell (Leather Wraps from Ecuador) and Sophia Hyder of Evolve Mint Fashion).

PENNY WINNER…my Lucky Penny Winner from the TLPL of September is Number #113.  Let me know by October 5th if you have Lucky Penny Card #113 and a $25 Darden Restaurant Gift Card is YOURS!  (Darden Restaurants = Red Lobster, Bahama Breeze, Olive Garden and Longhorn Steakhouse)  I’ll be doing my Lucky Penny at more ladies networking events in 2012…maybe you’ll be a winner?

Cary Chamber Ladies Networking

The Cary Chamber of Commerce also kicked off the Chamber 2012-2013 year with their Business of Women Luncheon Series this week.  Jen Daniels, Sports Reporter/Anchor for ABC Eyewitness New Channel 11 was the guest speaker.  She talked about her career in a mainly man-dominated field and her journey to working in the Raleigh broadcasting market.  As a young child she was always very involved with sports and enjoyed going to games with her father.  Her love for sports led her into the sports reporting field and she even shared with us some funny & embarrassing stories.  She’s a great ‘sport’ and kept the luncheon lighthearted and fun.  Hope to see you in October at TLPL or the Cary Chamber Business of Women luncheon, awesome ladies networking events!

And a big THANK YOU to My Girlfriend’s Closet (located in downtown Cary and downtown Apex).  They continue to dress me in amazing outfits for all of my ladies networking and business marketing events!  All of my tops, dresses, jewelry and shoes can be found there for purchase!  GO SHOP and tell them Becca sent you!

Engage in Your Community…CPA Day of Service

CPA Day of Service with Life Experiences

Can you imagine 14,000 members all involved with 1 association in 100 NC counties using 24 hours on one day to engage in their community?!?!?  That is exactly what happened on Friday, September 21 2012 in the CPA Day of Service, sponsored by the NCACPA!  What a cool idea right!?!? (the day was even declared & supported by NC Governor Beverly Perdue) You know that Smith & Smith, CPA loves to be involved with our community, especially when it involves a ‘hands on service to others’, so the CPA Day of Service was right up our alley!

I was quick to sign-up our office to participate and I knew exactly which organization I wanted to work with…Life Experiences in Cary, NC.  I filled out all of the required paperwork and contacted Mary, Executive Director for Life Experiences.  She was thrilled with the idea and welcome the help.  The NC State CPA students were also going to participate in the CPA Day of Service and were looking for a local organization to help.  They contacted me and they ended up sending some of their students to Life Experiences as well (some of their other students went to The Corral to help around the farm, one of my other favorite local organizations).

Cam helping out

It was a wonderful day of service to our community!  Cam and Blake helped with outdoor yard work and did some indoor chores and cleaning.  They had a great time talking with the Life Experiences clients and made lots of new friends along the way.  The NCACPA is also holding a contest for the “Most Creative CPA Day of Service” photo…winner will be printed on the cover of the November Interim Report!  I hope we win, we submitted the group picture made in the bakery of Life Experiences as our ‘winning photo”.  Thank you to the NCACPA for putting this wonderful idea together and thank you to Mary & the wonderful people of Life Experiences for letting us serve you last Friday!
