August 2012 Archives

Jumping back into work is never easy…especially after vacation!  But I would be foolish not to blog about two really fantastic ladies networking events from the month of July…even though today is August 1st (CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?!?!?)

TLPL in July

Both of these events were held on the SAME DAY…talk about a GREAT but LOOOONNNGGG DAY!  The first event was the Triangle Ladies Power Lunch, hosted by the lovely Carrie Peele of Blue Diamond Limo and held at North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh.  The speaker was Beth Briggs, Executive Director for NC Council for Women of the State of North Carolina Department of Administration.  Beth, a fellow Rotarian, was a very dynamic speaker and talked about the role of women in our economy.  Some of my favorite things she mentioned included:  “Coming to terms with your personal value and loving to love what you do”, she mentioned the grant programs available for women’s projects and used a fantastic quote from Eleanor Roosevelt “Do something that scares you everyday”.  I had a wonderful time at the luncheon (as always) and was pleased to meet Shannon Reeder, Managing Partner and Marketing Director of Charlie Goodnights Comedy Club in downtown Raleigh.  This was Shannon’s first time at TLPL, she was a guest of Lynn Shaw (TravelHost Magazine of the Triangle), and I think it is safe to say she had a wonderful time!

WBON Summer Social 2012

That evening was the second ladies networking event!  WBON of Cary held their Annual Summer Social at the NEW and LOVELY My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Cary!  WBON Board Member & Owner, Loiz Cozart, along with her staff of ladies and her daughter, Ashley, were our very gracious and wonderful hosts!  We also had a nice wine sampling from UnWined Wine Bar and food from EJ’s Soul Food, both located in downtown Cary.  We had a packed house of ladies (and a few guys) with over 60+ present!  We did a fun raffle with lots of great prizes donated by our members.  We raised over $400 for our scholarship fund that night too!

What a fantastic way to kick off the 2012-2013 WBON Year!

Have you met my friend Jimmy...Jimmy Choo!?!?

Thank you to ALL who helped make this event amazing!  It was a hot and sweltering evening, but one full of fun, friendships and new business deals in the making!  And CONGRATS to Lois and her girls with the new store in Cary too!!!  Go and support our WBON members and their businesses!!!!

Just returned from another wonderful long-weekend getaway!

St. Thomas US Virgin Islands

This time it was with the Cary Chamber of Commerce for the Annual Membership Drive Trip!  It’s a reward trip that is earned throughout the year for helping recruit new members for the Cary Chamber.  This was my 6th year in a row earning the trip and it was excellent as always!  We returned to the beautiful island of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, same place we went six years ago, but this time, on the OTHER side of the island at Sugar Bay Resort and Spa. We left RDU early Thursday morning on a 7am flight with American Airlines and caught a connecting flight out of Miami (can’t say enough nice things about Terminal 1 at RDU…I don’t fly much, but every time I do I am amazed at how nice the RDU airport looks and represents our area!!!)

Visit to St. John, US Virgin Islands

The resort was all-inclusive (the best way to travel!!!!) and had beautiful views of the Caribbean and was very carefree and relaxing!  We had an awesome view from our room and the pool area was actually three separate pools and walked right out onto the beach.  The beach was rocky and proved to be a challenge when trying to get in with bare feet, but once you got out into the ocean, it was paradise!  We spent a lot of time at the pool and beach area, the weather was awesome, despite a tropical storm that was passing just south of the US Virgin Islands (thankfully it didn’t bother us at all!)  On Saturday we took the ferry over to St. John for a few hours and visited Maho Bay.   This was a very beautiful beach and we spent about 2 hours there snorkeling and relaxing.  Blake and I went out to snorkel together and saw three sea turtles, stingrays, jelly fish (they sneaked up on you), tons of tropical fish & coral and even a SHARK (it was a small one, but still…it was a SHARK!)

Cary Chamber Friends

In the evening we celebrated dinner with other friends on the trip and enjoyed a very entertaining Carnival Night that included a themed dinner, dances (Blake and I participated in the “Newly Wed Dance, even though we are 7-years past being newly weds, it was still fun, and we were the ‘unofficial WINNERS), limbo/flame dancers and even a guy who walked across broken glass lit on fire!!!!!!!  There was Karaoke one night…sad to say that I helped perform probably one of the WORST renditions of “Love Shack” ever…why they didn’t’ just “boo” us off the stage…I will NEVER know!

Cary Chamber Membership Trip 2012

The entire group (minus one or two) enjoyed a nice dinner together at the Italian restaurant on the resort property one night and helped to do an early birthday celebration for Tom Huff (Cary Chamber Chair 2011-2012).  The trip is a wonderful reward for months of hard work!  I encourage all Cary Chamber members to participate in the Annual Membership Drive next year!  I’m honored to serve the Cary Chamber as Vice Chair for Member Services 2012-2013, so come join us!  A vacation awaits you…

Everyone Say…HAPPY FRIDAY!!!

Dressed in MGC in Apex!

Do you ever just want to stand up and yell HAPPY FRIDAY!?!?!?!  I am feeling that for sure today!  Been a long week, but a great week and looking forward to the weekend for sure!  So here we go with some HAPPY FRIDAY news!

WBON of Cary kicked off our 2012-2013 Year this week on Wednesday.  We had a nice crowed of over 50 ladies and our speaker was sooooo dynamic and engaging!  I want to tell you all about him, but I really want to encourage you to go HEAR HIM SPEAK!  His program is great and if I tell you about it, I’ll ruin the surprise for you!  His name is Kevin Snyder and he talked to our group of ladies about PASSION, PERSISTANCE and making that GOAL happen!  Loved it, laughed so much and took a lot away with me to work on.

Kevin with WBON ladies

Thanks Kevin!  And thanks to our awesome Programming Co-Chairs, Alice Osborn and Karen Albright, for getting Kevin as a speaker!!  I wore an amazing dress to WBON…and thankful for how soft and comfy it was, because I do a LOT of moving/lifting and carrying on those days to get stuff set-up.  I got my dress from My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex!  Plus my awesome shoes and jewelry!

Been there to shop??  You’ll be happy you did!

Super Skippers & Pep Rally

Our oldest son started kindergarten this week and we attended the Pep Rally on Tuesday night.  It was really fun, the Athens Drive Cheerleaders were there and also the Super Skippers of Cary YMCA…who just happen to be the 2012 National Champions!!! Who knew!?!?!?  They were awesome and did some killer jumps/stunts during the pep rally.  I can barely jump a rope 10 times in a row and these kids were killing it with flips, handstands, multi-jumpers with multi-ropers, etc.  No wonder they are national champs!  The pep rally talked about the Fuel Up to 60 program, a neat nationwide movement on behalf of the NFL that is helping fight obesity and encouraging kids/families to make smart/healthy decisions. We are looking forward to participating.

Railhawks at the Hib, Happy Friday!

Before the pep rally we had dinner at Hibernian Restaurant & Irish Pub here in Cary.  My favorite thing about the Hib (as many like to call it) is the atmosphere!  It is so cool and really different inside.  Plus they have a nice outdoor covered patio area.  Our kids had never been there before and they really liked it.  The boys shared the mini-corndogs and thought they were great!  Blake and I shared the chips & cheese and then also a big hamburger, perfect for splitting!   The Carolina Railhawks soccer players were at the Hib that night (one of the reasons we went to eat) so our boys got to say hello to them, talk for a bit about soccer and got some autographs.  They were thrilled!  Thanks Hib of Cary for a fun family dinner night! Hibernian Restaurant & Irish Pub on Urbanspoon

Hope you have a great weekend and take a minute to say HAPPY FRIDAY along with me!

Global Run 4 Water, Can You Join Us?

Have you heard about the Rotary Global Run 4 Water?  It is a world-wide event that is taking place on Sunday, September 30th.  There will be water races, runs, walks and events held all around the globe on that day!  I’m the Race Director for Rotary District 7710 Global Run 4 Water and I’m so excited about this event!

Becca with Beth for Global Run 4 Water

We are raising money for water/sanitation projects and hoping to create more awareness about water issues on a global level.  The statistics are scary about water diseases and the number of people/children who die daily for lack of clean water.  The goal for Rotary Global Run 4 Water is to raise $1million dollars!  That’s huge but it’s also achievable!  Our local event is going to be held on Sunday, September 30th at 4pm at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.  We’re doing a 5k walk/run and our WOW Factor for the event is a 1-mile Water Carry Competition!  We’ve had a race committee put together for several months and we are working hard on sponsors, runners and all of the race details!  I’ve always been a runner in races, but NEVER a Race Director, so trust me, I’m learning LOTS of new things!  I’ve been traveling around talking with local Rotary clubs in our District 7710 about the race and how they can help & participate.  A few weeks ago I was blessed to make a new friend, Beth Briggs

Beth is a fellow Rotarian, and invited me to come to her club to announce the race (Rotary Club of Raleigh).

Race logo

So I joined Beth yesterday, along with Mike Creech from my home club (Cary-Kildaire).  Mike made an announcement about the upcoming Life Experience Auction & Golf Tourney and I made the announcement about the Rotary Global Run 4 Water.  There seemed to be some excitement about the race from this club and I’m looking forward to having them participate too!  Thank you Beth and President Cindy Poole for allowing me to speak to your club about the Global Run 4 Water.  And thank you to My Girlfriend’s Closet in downtown Apex for styling me in a lovely Michael Kors dress!

1-Mile Water Carry Demo

Our RD 7710 Race Committee thought it would be a good idea to make a video of some of us demonstrating the 1-mile Water Carry Competition.  So we met at WakeMed Soccer Park yesterday afternoon to film the video.  Very thankful for Tom Owen, a Cary-Kildaire Club member, who volunteered to use his talents/skills to shoot the video for us!  Four members of our committee came and each brought their own creative way for carrying water!  Check out the picture!  Super cool!  The video will be coming soon.  The little guy in the picture is my little Mark.  He went with me to help.  So how can YOU help on September 30th with the Global Run 4 Water?  Can you do a sponsorship?  Can you race with us?  Can you help spread the word?  All of the info is on our website and you can print off the brochure to send in with payment and it will save you a $4 processing fee online.  Thank you for your support and help!

Eagle Scout Ceremony

Eagle Scout Mike & Becca

I had a very humbling experience over the weekend.  I was invited to attend the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Michael James Kunath.  I met Mike’s mom several years ago through some local business networking groups and was approached last year about helping Mike with his Eagle Scout project.  I arranged for Mike to speak at my Rotary Club (Cary-Kildaire), where he presented his project that would help him earn his Eagle Scout.  Ironically enough, the project was to build a wooden glider that would be used at Life Experiences (one of our Cary-Kildaire Rotary members is the Executive Director for LE) so it was a perfect fit for our club!  The Cary-Kildaire Club helped to fund Mike’s project and he was off and running!  Mike spent the next several months working on completing the project and the requirements for earning the Eagle Scout

Life Experiences Project

The ceremony on Saturday was very nice and it included a nice display of his project, his ranks/years through Boy Scouts, his achievements as a student at his school and his community work overall.  Clearly Mr. and Mrs. Kunath have sooooo much to be proud of in Mike!  There were several distinguished guests at the ceremony and each of them had something wonderful to say about Mike and presented him with several neat & unique gifts (American Flag, certificates, medallions, etc.)  My favorite part was when Mike spoke and thanked all of the many men and women along the way who helped him achieve his goal of earning the Eagle ScoutCongrats Mike!  Well deserved!  Mike is off to attend Notre Dame this week, wishing him the best of luck!

The Triangle Ladies Power Lunch hosted Congresswoman, Renee Ellmers as their August 2012 guest speaker.  Ellmers proudly represents North Carolina’s second district and was elected into office in 2010.

Carrie, Renee Ellmers & Becca

She was one of 89 Freshmen elected into Congress that year and is 1 of 24 Republican Women in the House of Representatives.  She’s a Michigan native and was a nurse before she ran for office.  Her husband is a general surgeon and they have a private practice in Dunn, NC.  Ellmers did an excellent job speaking to the TLPL ladies and shared not only her journey to politics, but also her goals, values and hopes for NC and the USA.  She quoted Margaret Thatcher In politics if you want anything said, ask a man.  If you want anything done, ask a woman.”-which drew a huge round of cheers and shouts from the audience.  She said that women bring common sense and efficiency to government and are more willing to work together on issues, despite their party affiliation.  I enjoyed hearing her speak and even though she had a busy afternoon schedule, she still took time to meet ladies and have pictures made.  I also thought she did a wonderful job on handling questions from the crowd.

Thank you to My Girlfriend’s Closet in Apex for styling me in this Gorgeous dress & jewelry. They are having a HUGE sale this weekend, “LIKE” them on Facebook HERE for sale updates and exclusive promotions!

Village Cleaners

There were several new vendors on display during the August luncheon, and I was proud to see Beth Dehghan, owner of Village Cleaners (and client of Smith & Smith, CPA), this was her first-ever booth display!  Beth and team worked hard on making their table attractive, informative and memorable.  Nice job Village Cleaners!  I also had the pleasure of meeting Cynthia and Brenn, first time guests to the TLPL and owners of Cyndi Chastain Entertainment (the COMPLETE entertainment package for your corporate or wedding event).  My lovely guests this month (part of the Smith & Smith, CPA sponsorship to TLPL) included: Heather Swanner, Owner of Heather Swanner Photography, Beth DonnerPresident of Diversified Planning and Heidi Harris, Marketing Consultant for The Ad Cure.  The other guests at our VIP table included: Catherine Easop, Financial Representative for Modern Woodman, Elizabeth Carrasco, Owner/Interior Designer of VIP Designs and Lissa McMahel, Design Consultant for BlindPros

TLPL & Global Run 4 Water

Join us next month for another fun TLPL!  I appreciate Carrie Peele (hostess for the luncheon), allowing me to have a few minutes to make an announcement to the group about the upcoming Global Run 4 Water.  It’s taking place on Sunday, September 30th at 4pm at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.  It includes a 5k Run/Walk and a 1-mile water carrying competition.  I had lots of ladies talk to me about the event afterwards, please sign-up to participate and help spread the word!!

New Cary Chamber Members

It’s always a pleasure meeting new Cary Chamber members and also a pleasure helping to recruit more!  I’m pleased to serve the Cary Chamber this year as Vice-Chair for Member Services, so one of my goals is to help make sure Cary Chamber members are getting the most out of their membership.  I’d like to blog about two new Cary Chamber members, both of which see great value in joining the Cary Chamber.

Bulgogi at Wings Cafe

Last week I had the opportunity to meet the owner of Wings Café.  Unah Bae opened her restaurant in early 2012 and is looking to expand their customer base and expose all of Cary and beyond to their delicious food.  Wings Café is located off of Buck Jones Road and I have to say, it is much larger inside than it looks.  It is very colorful and the bright yellow walls make you feel welcome as soon as you walk in.  Blake went along with me for lunch and we found the food to be very tasty and scrumptious.  The menu is large and includes everything from wings (10 different flavors) to sandwiches, ham burgers, chicken, panini, salads and soups.  They also have a really cool hot dog specials!  Blake had their lunch special: 5pcs wings and ½ Philly cheesesteak while I had the Bugogi dish.  Blake absolutely loved the wings and said they were just right, not too fatty and not undercooked.  I have never had bulgogi, but wanted to try something new. WOW, it was REALLY GOOD!

Good Selection at Wings Cafe

I’ll get that again for sure.  Bulgogi is traditional Korean sesame steak, and it was served with white rice and a fresh garden salad.  We also took two order of wings back to the office for Sharon and Cam.  I talked with Unah about her plan to get new customers and shared with her how the Cary Chamber could help.  She said it sounded like a great idea, she’s looking forward to having a ribbon cutting and she plans to attend Cary Chamber events each month.  I’ll be picking up her membership application on Tuesday of this week!  Great job with Wings Café, I’ll be telling people about it and I look forward to seeing Unah and her staff at future Chamber events! Wings Cafe on Urbanspoon  Wings Cafe is located at 1307 Buck Jones Road Raleigh, NC 27606  wingscafe4u@gmail.com 919-481-3772

Capital Financial joins Cary Chamber

One of my good friends, Autumn LaBaraca, recently made a career change and is now working for the one and only, COACH PETE D’Arruda!  Coach Pete is the owner of Capital Financial Advisory Group, LLC and is famous all across the land for his radio show, Coach Pete Radio The Financial Safari.  I love his tagline, “Be Prepared, Not Surprised”.  Autumn is working as the Director of Public Relations for Coach Pete and immediately brought Capifal Financial Advisory Group, LLC into the Cary Chamber as a new member.  Autumn knows all of the ins and outs of the Cary Chamber, so she’ll have him & his office up to speed on Chamber events in no time!

She was sweet and stopped by Smith & Smith, CPA last week with a yummy sweet treat of homemade carrot cupcakes by the “Carrot Cake Lady” and dropped off some of Coach Pete’s business cards.  Looking forward to getting to know Coach Pete and watching Autumn getting him REALLY plugged in with the local networking market.

Know of anyone wanting to join the Cary Chamber?  The benefits are amazing, the networking is growing and the payback is priceless!  Every business should invest in their community and join the Cary Chamber.  Let me know if you want to find out more.

Charity auction & Golf Tournament

I had a lovely time on Sunday night at The 25th Annual Harry H. Montgomery Life Experiences Charity Auction and Golf Tournament

Sarah & Becca

The event included a Live & Silent charity auction, heavy hors d’oeuvres, cash bar, delicious brownies (made by the bakery department of Life Experiences) and a fun social atmosphere.  This is my 5th or 6th year attending (can’t remember) but I always have a great time and win/bid on some awesome items, BUT the best part is that I love helping a worthy place like Life Experiences.  I took my sweet friend, Sarah Thacker, owner of Thacker Law Firm, and we had so much fun running from table to table to watch our bids and make sure we were the top bidders!  Caterpillar is a huge support of this auction, so there are always really cool trucks and toys there to bid on.  This year I bid & won two HUGE ridding toys for my boys.  One was a massive blue tractor (that has peddles like a bike) and the other was a miniature yellow digger.  Sarah and I had to try them out, and yelp, they worked just fine (and my boys were so ecstatic when they woke up the next morning to their new rides!)  This charity auction event serves as one of the main fundraisers for Life Experiences and it’s actually a two-day event that includes a golf tournament on Monday at Prestonwood Country Club.

Charity Auction items

There are eight local Rotary clubs that help with the charity auction by providing auction items, ticket sales and volunteers.  I’m always so proud to see my home club, Cary-Kildaire Rotary, serve as a very dedicated and committed club to this event.  I helped collect four items for the charity auction, donated by Smith & Smith, CPA (two concert tickets and a Back-To-School gift basket) and Thacker Law Firm (donated two Harlequin Romance gift baskets that included lunch & signing by the author, Cathy Gillen Thacker). Sarah and I stayed for the entire evening and had fun listening & watching the Live Auction, which included 27 items (everything from week stays at the beach, to original artwork, jewelry and football tickets).  They were also selling $50 tickets for a trip for two to the Ryder Cup in Chicago!  The lucky winner won a 4-night stay at Lincolnshire Marriott Golf Resort, 4 days of match tickets to the Ryder Cup and a $2500 travel allowance!  Such a cool prize!  Congrats to all who worked hard to make this night a charity auction fundraising success for Life Experiences!

And thank you to My Girlfriend’s Closet of Apex for styling me in this beautiful summer-fun evening dress!

So much going on all around, hard to cover it all!  This will be a good blog to just catch you up on this and that…and more!

Blake and I are now officially part of the Wake County School System

GoPlaySave Book

Trent started kindergarten on Track 4 earlier this month and he is loving everyday of it!  We laughed though because the first week seemed like it was nothing but paper work and writing checks!  We are now in a good swing of things and very happy with his adjustment to school.  He’s participating in his school’s fundraiser of selling the GoPlaySave coupon books (formerly Citipass).  We love these books and usually buy one every year.  We’ll buy one this year to support his school and I look forward to using it as much as possible.  Let me know if you are interested in buying one!

Jonesboro Rotary Club

I had a nice opportunity last week to visit the Jonesboro Rotary Club (located in Sanford, NC).  I traveled there with another fellow Cary-Kildaire Rotary Club member, Tom Quinn, to present the Global Run 4 Water presentation.  What a nice club and they were so very welcoming.   Our presentation was well received and we are looking forward to their support on Sunday, September 30th.  I was slightly obsessed with this bright yellow shift dress that I found at My Girlfriend’s Closet in Apex!  Thank you Lois and team for helping me style & accessorize this beautiful dress!   I had lots of compliments all day long!  Check out My Girlfriends’ Closet of Apex on facebook…they are close to having 800 ‘likes’!!!!

Cary Innovation Social Media Class

I also attended a social media class at the Cary Innovation Center last week.  It’s always a good idea to keep up with what’s happening with social media, mainly because it is forever changing and forever growing.  The class was taught by Hal Goodtree of Cary Citizen, and was a good overview of “Intro to Social Media for Business”.  He covered such topics as: 1) why bother with social media, 2) stuff you don’t need and 3) top 5 website tips & top 3 security tips & top 4 engagement tips.  I saw several other friends and local business leaders at the class and had a nice photo taken with Lindsey Chester (Cary Citizen), Christie Moser (Cary Chamber) and Autumn LaBarca (Capital Financial Advisory Group). Thank you again to MGC in Apex for this dressy & perfectly business-casual dress & fabulous necklace!  Have you shopped there yet??!?!?!

Dollar Plus

Last but not least, very proud of my cousin, Jenny Fountain, for getting her first teaching job!  Jenny graduated earlier this year from USC (Game Cocks!) with her teaching degree and is now working as a RTI teacher for an elementary school in South Carolina.  She’s every excited and took last week to get her room & classroom plans together. I wanted to help her with some items for her classroom, so she sent me a list of items she needed. I went to a fairly new store in town called Dollar Plus.  This is a family owned store and it has just about everything (back to school supplies, party supplies, home goods, holiday, cards/gifts, closeouts, etc.)  I was able to find a good amount of items on Jenny’s list and sent her a care package full of goodies.  Cheers to a great first year of teaching Ms. Fountain!!!!!

Magazine Covers &  Community Honors

NCACPA Cover

Talk about being front and center!  Blake has ironically been on the front cover of two different magazine publications this year!  Pretty cool if you ask me!  He was on the cover of Cary Living for their May/June 2012 issue, featured in an article called “Today’s Modern Man”.  He was also recently on the cover of the NCACPA Interim Report (North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants) 3rd Edition 2012.  The NCACPA cover featured all of the Newest CPAs in NC that attended the 9th Annual CPA Inauguration on June 20th in Greensboro, NC.

Cary Living Modern Man

The Cary Living article was a little bit more in-depth as it included stories about 10 local men and the lives that they lead in our community.  I was very excited when I found out that Blake had been selected as one of the featured guys and we still marvel as how many people (family, friends, clients, etc.) have mentioned seeing him on the cover!  Several have even asked for his autograph!  The article was excellent as it talked about the lives of the men, their families, community involvement, personal achievements and personal values/goals.  Part of the seven-page article included a two-page section with the biographies of each man and highlighted a small part about each one.  Blake’s included his Favorite App: Angry Birds, his Favorite Quote: “Life is a garden…dig it” (From the movie Joe Dirt) and Exercise: Gym classes at Lifetime Fitness, Mud Run and Charity Races (we are participating in the ZOMBIE MUD run on Sept. 8th and also the Warrior Dash on Nov. 3rd).  Blake’s article was similar to the one Bob was featured in by Cary Magazine (March/April 2012) in that he’s a family guy and feels like a lucky guy by getting to work with his dad on a daily basis.  Thank you Cary Living for such a great article!

Rotarian of the Year

I had the proud honor of being recognized as Rotarian of the Year for my club, Cary-Kildaire Rotary.   The award was presented to me at the end of June at MacGregor Country Club at our Installation Banquet.  It’s an award that is voted on by our club members and given out annually.  It’s such an honor and I’m so blessed to be part of such a wonderful club!
